For context, I rate products and businesses on a simple scale: 5 stars means I love it, 4 stars means I like it, 3 stars is okay, 2 stars means I didn't like it, and 1 star means I hated it or think it's unsafe. 5 stars earned here. Wits End in Clifton Park is a really neat, very expansive store. Every time I go in, I feel like I could walk around for an hour and still not see everything. They have all kinds of decorations, and if you are looking for unique Christmas ornaments or special decor pieces, this place is absolutely worth checking out. It is not just seasonal either, there are gifts and decorative items for all times of year. They even carry clothing. The prices are not cheap, but the store has an upscale aura and I personally do not mind paying more for items that feel unique and well chosen. It does not feel like a big box store, it feels more like a specialty shop where you find things you would not see everywhere else. I have heard people say the staff walk around and watch customers closely. Honestly, I can understand why. The layout has to be a security challenge, there are multiple rooms, different levels, and even an upstairs. I would imagine shoplifting could be an issue in a store set up like this. For me, the staff have always been friendly and helpful. I actually wonder how they keep track of where everything is in a place that big, that alone is impressive. Around Christmas time it gets very busy, which says a lot about how popular it is. I usually make it in about once a year during the holidays, but you could shop here anytime for unique gifts. The only thing that feels a little off putting to me is the number of signs about broken ornaments and being charged 50 percent if something is damaged. I do understand why they have them, a lot of people do not watch their kids closely and accidents happen, and adults break things too. Still, seeing the signs all over the place does change the feel a bit. That said, it definitely does not stop me from coming in. I've been going here every year for probably 6 years for Christmas shopping. I purchase ornaments for my family. This is the first year that they not only removed the price strip on the ornament tag and replaced it with a higher sticker price, but they also now charge you for the BOX THE ORNAMENT CAME IN. I also noticed they jacked up the price of some of the more affordable jewelry. I like to support local but next year I just will not be able to support this business and will purchase online from somewhere else. read more

Wow, this place was disappointing. If the prices don't put you at your wit's end, the employees will. Reading a lot of the other reviews I'm relieved it's not just me. We were basically stalked/watched closely/made to feel that we were thieves waiting for the chance to steal something overpriced & ugly, which is most of what fills this shop. I might have a few tattoos/color in my hair, but my sister and I are honest, kind people, who spent WAY too much Christmas shopping but didn't drop a dime here after our experience. Story: My sister and I have passed by this place several times, seeing it from the highway on our adventures & were curious. Driving home we again saw the pretty Christmas lights from the highway, so we got off at the next exit and backtracked. As we entered the store, we were excited, but immediately realized it was a severely overpriced tchotchke/knick-knack shop, with some candy, jams/jellies, and jewelry, a la the Vermont Country Store, or the Silo Restaurant in Glens Falls. Also, the smell of a million pungent scents from candles, etc., mingling was instantly nauseating and migraine inducing. We walked through the labyrinthian layout and decided which way to go. Some of the decor is really neat, but if you've been in one overpriced shop of doodads and sweets, you've been in them all. We realized we probably weren't going to buy much, given the insane markup, but we had driven here, out of our way, and wanted to wander a little in case there was something more in our wheelhouse around the corner. I'm from Vermont, where reusable bags are required unless you want to pay extra for bags, and we'd been Christmas shopping all day, so I had my last small reusable bag from my arsenal over one shoulder and tucked beneath my arm. My sister and chose a path that went up some stairs. She pointed at a little flimsy wood/plaid house, the kind that you might put on a shelf seasonally, and I said "ooh...let me guess...$20?" It turned out to be like $17, and we chuckled a little while my sister informed me that she'd gotten THREE of the EXACT same thing at Target for $5 or less. Suddenly an associate came up behind us asking "Can I help you?" in a way that let us know she probably wasn't amused at our observations. I felt slightly bad, but also, the markup was hilarious, so...eh...whatever! We ascended to the room at the top of the stairs, and me, being obsessed with cats, noticed something cat-related. Suddenly the associate was back. Basket in hand. She glared at my reusable bag and said "So, it's store policy..." (stares at bag and shoves basket towards me) "that you carry one of these." It was really obvious she thought I'd break something or use my bag for theft. I was really annoyed and for half a second both my sister and I thought she was going to confiscate my bag or put it behind the counter or something, but she settled for me taking the basket and shoving my bag in it. "I'm from VT" I explained "Where you have to bring your reusable bags with you everywhere." She looked us up and down and sort of nodded and left us, telling us we had to check out the ornament area at the end of the hall that would "blow us away." The prices certainly did. Everything was glass, which is cool, but I have pets and my sister has kids, so it wasn't really for us. There was a woman in the ornament area who kept asking if we needed assistance, what we were looking for, etc., and she watched us like a hawk. Not sure if Associate #1 had let her know to keep an eye out or if that's just their Boomer "you're not our rich, elderly demographic" attitude towards people under 65, but it was weird and uncomfortable. We didn't dally and made it downstairs where two employees were chatting, keeping an eye on us, and also asked us if we needed help. My sister and I had been excited to come here but it was obvious we were viewed with suspicion, watched closely, and not made to feel welcome. My first time going to Wits Ends. I had a very pleasant shopping experience. So much to choose from. GREAT QUALITY and such a fair asking price. I really was so pleasantly surprised. Wits Endvwill forever be my go to now. I knew what I was looking for, but assistance from a staff member made all the difference. Horrible service. Basically if your young and black don't go there ... they will profile you and watch you like hawks. The owner banned me with her reason being - "you did absolutely nothing , it's just my prerogative." My friend had confronted her about following us out the store and writing down my license plate. When my friend confronted the owner she said she was "drawing the sky". Knowing she had my license plate information for no valid reason made me uncomfortable. She could have done anything with that information, so I waited outside the store for her to make a legal report stating I couldn't come back. She watched me out the window and waited until I left after 15-20 minutes to make the call. She then called the police to my home. My grandfather was going through a tough time and it's Father's Day and all I wanted to do was get him a gift from the store his wife and I loved. She said she "knew who I was" but couldn't say who I was. The police even stated that it was unfair treatment, but people will be people and she didn't know me. At all. I actually dont remember ever meeting her in my life. (Just because I look a certain way or "act" a certain way I will always have values. I would never steal from this store or disrespect it.) I also understand protecting your store and making sure nothing gets shoplifted, I've never said anything about them following me before because it's valid! I wouldn't want anyone stealing from me either! but this was in fact profiling a 19 year old girl who would never steal from a store I grew up with and made memories in with my grandmother. With that being said , if you are a young minority... just don't go to whits end. Just because of the color of your skin, the tattoos/ piercings you have, the clothes you are wearing ... you are just as entitled to a comfortable shopping experience as every one else! I have been coming to Wit's End for years - the place has really evolved over time - originally it was just your average gift shop, but now they have transformed into a very high-end gift shop. The store is broken up into different rooms/sections, there is the card section filled with many different handmade cards; there is the jewelry section with various designers like Pandora, Kendra Scott, Swarovski, and even some costume jewelry, etc.; another room has designer clothes, shoes and handbags - there are entire Vera Bradley, Brighton, and Jack Rogers sections among those; to finish out the first floor there is an area with candles, different serving dips / sauces, and chocolates. The second floor has more of the home decorations and they always rotate for each season, well besides the Christmas Ornament room - I believe that is up year round and is filled with all the collectible ornaments you could ever want. Additionally upstairs there is a children's toy section, a pet section, a celebration section, a sign section and more. Finally in the "basement" there are more decorations and then a wine / serving section with many different glasses and plates and crystal. Basically this place has it all - if you are ever in need of a gift (and willing to spend a little more money) then this is the place for you. I love going back to NY and coming here during the holiday season as the place is decorated top to bottom so fantastically. And the pieces you find here you won't be able to find any place else in the Capital Region. Um, how have I never been here before? When I drove up to it, it reminded me of a theme park with the grand display of ginormous nutcrackers and other festivities of the season. There are so many twists and turns throughout I'm afraid I may have missed something. Jewelry and candy and candles and loads of Christmas bulbs and unique pieces for the home to clothing and the list just goes on and on. What a beautiful store! I read the comments about the staff. I noticed a lot of staff being helpful and attentive. I didn't find them stalkerish at all. In fact they were friendly and helpful and available and worked great as a team upon checkout. I wanted to visit the store after seeing the tv commercials. When I was in the area recently, I stopped in. I wasn't disappointed. There's a little bit of everything there, even decadent chocolates! It's all great quality. A salesperson did approach me offering help, but she wasn't at all obnoxious. I found some of the Yelp reviews about the sales staff to be very unfair. A large, sprawling store like that needs to guard against shoplifting and the best way to do that is to have attentive sales people. You'll notice that some of the most expensive earrings in the store are not displayed in pairs. That's another way--a smart way--to deter potential crime. My biggest surprise was meeting the owner, Susan Hoffman! She walked up to me and asked if she could help. We struck up a conversation. What a nice person! I love this store i could spend hours just looking. But unfortunately the staff there makes my trips short-lived. They follow you around as if you're going to steal everything in there. I work retail in a leadership position and i would never have my associates do that to customers. There has been many times I just left because i couldn't look around in peace. The store clerks would walk you directly to what you were looking for (which is helpful since the store is so large) and wouldn't give up until they helped you find what you were looking for. One of my favorite places to shop in the area during Christmas season. I love the way the store comes to life during holiday season. It makes me feel like I'm in Santa's workshop with all the uniques ornaments and rows and rows of decorated Christmas trees. I half love coming here and half dread it. Its incredibly overwhelming because it had two floors that are absolutely COVERED in things, candles, cards, gifts, etc. You'll definately find what you need but you may need to spend some time looking. I absolutely love their selection of vera wang things, and they also have a beautiful selection of pandora. I'm not sure if its because its december but I was asked if I was being helped 10 times, I guess thats great customer service though. For Christmas my husband bought me a lovely necklace at this boutique. It was not my taste, however, so with his encouragement I returned it. It wasn't until I saw the actual receipt that I realized that they charged him $4. to wrap a $350. gift! !! When I mentioned to the sales person that I was appalled that they charged him for gift wrapping, she said that she didn't make the rules and that the necklace came in a nice box. (What's that got to do with it?). Wit's End appears to be a lovely store. Some how they lost the meaning of customer service and what being a class act looks like. Nasty unprofessional foul mouth female in charge and her robot employees but she sets the tone in that jungle... they coward at the mere presence of her that's right, I'm being my own voice on one of the worst retail businesses in the Tri-City area. It's taken me 3 months to decide if a critique was worth my time at the experience I had in late Summer... I was sworn at loudly for all to hear and called a "B*tch the rest I'll refrain from typing. I was lied to regarding a pair of earrings I was told they'd check with the designer firm if another pair could be made or ordered. The pair I picked out was defective and didn't close properly. I waited 3 weeks on a 3 day promised call back that never came and told they'd send out the defective earring to be fixed as it was a retired piece. I got called 2 weeks later went in as they were ready to be picked up and fixed... I arrived so excited as they were a Birthday gift for a very sick friend only to be shown the SAME defective pair not fixed I pointed that out and was clearly disappointed and BAM the owner flew over and got irrate, swearing, pointing her finger and told me to leave and never return. I was warned by colleagues not to shop there because of the staff and wished I had listened. read more

Today's visit was completed in record time. I have frequented this establishment for over 20 years and had always recommended this place to family and friends. I could always count on Wit's End for unique gifts and inspiration for each season. This is most likely my last visit. The last half dozen visits I have met some of the rudest, most judgmental sales staff I had ever met. As an example, today, my boyfriend and I were walking through, birthday gift shopping. We were on our usual route, walking through the entire store. We entered the ornament section and were greeted with an abrupt, "Do you need help? This is ornaments." Anyone who has been there can attest, there is NO mistaking the ornament department for anything but. I smiled and quietly said, "No thank you." She raised her voice and said, "So no help, then?" I spoke louder and said, "No thank you." We shook that experience off and moved on. I usually like to look at the LaFonn and Swarovski displays. When we were in that section, a different employee asked if we needed help. I said, "There used to be a large La Fonn display here. Has that been moved?" The employee answered my question and walked away, but not before looking me up and down. I dress comfortably, but respectably. Still, you can't judge a book by its cover. Visited for the first and last time today. This place has a lot of nice unique things. It was a very pleasant space, clean and bright so it's really a shame I had such a bad experience. Read some of these other reviews and you'll see I wasn't the only one who had the same type of issue with this place either. I had selected some Christmas ornaments and was walking around the store with them when I was approached by not 1 but 2 employees asking me about the ornaments. It was really obvious they thought I was going to steal them. The first woman asked me what I had in my hand and a few minutes later the second woman forcibly removed the ornaments from my hand also took one from my boyfriend! She said if we dropped the ornaments and they broke the pieces would be sharp. We are adults. We weren't running around the place. There was clearly some type of profiling going on. More than half the items in the store could break and be sharp but we didn't see her confiscating items from anyone else. We were both super insulted and embarrassed. The way we were treated was downright degrading. I have never had an employee swoop over and take my items from me before I was ready to check out at any store. This place is suspicious of anyone who isn't a white AARP shopper which is also the only demographic who works there. This store is impossible to navigate with a wheelchair or a stroller. Aisles are not wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs or strollers without running over merchandise that is set on the floor. Also, there is *no* access to the downstairs portion of the store without using stairs, as I was told by a friendly salesperson. She did offer to help me lift my stroller down the stairs, but then I would have been trapped without someone to help me back up. Last year, I received a pair of leggings from Wit's End as a Christmas gift. I noticed that after wearing them only two times, they had a hole in them. My mother and I brought them back to the store along with the receipt. The worker in the clothing section was extremely rude and told me that I can't expect too much when I buy cheap leggings. They were $25!! In the past I've purchased $8 leggings at Target and they've lasted me 3+ years. She reluctantly let me exchange them, after trying to up sell me $80 leggings. That left a really bad taste in my mouth and I haven't been back since, until this weekend. I received a gift card for Christmas and went into the store knowing exactly which necklace I wanted to purchase. I picked it out at the counter and the saleswoman said she would clean it up for me and have it behind the register for when I was ready to checkout. Ten minutes later, the saleswoman finds me in the store and tells me she broke the chain while cleaning it, but I could purchase the longer chained version for $10 more. Now it would've been great customer service if they decided to waive the additional $10 because they were the ones to break the first one. I told her I preferred the shorter chain, so she proceeds to tell me they have ordered two more and I can call them over the next few weeks to see if/when they received them. Not once did they offer to take my information and call me once the necklace came in. I left there disgusted. I did go to Maggie's Gift Shop, found the same necklace and purchased it from them. Wit's End lost out on a sale because their customer service is appalling. Once my gift card balance is $0 I never intend to go back and will advise everyone I know to shop the smaller, friendlier gift shops like Maggie's and The Open Door. read more

On Saturday November 16, 2013 I had the pleasure of visiting Wits End to purchase some Kameleon pops and see if they could remove the one that was stuck in my ring. After many tries, including the store manager having a go at it, that pop would just not budge. I was assisted by Joyce and by Phyllis, they were the sweetest nicest people you could ask for. Joyce introduced me to a new line they have, Uno De 50 and I fell in love. I purchase one of the rings while I was waiting to see what was going to happen with my pop. Imagine how shocked I was when the ladies came back to me and said, "Your ring was scratched when we were trying to remove the pop, so we are giving you a brand new ring and pop to replace the one you brought in." I love Wits End, I shop there mostly for myself(spoiled brat) and this just showed me again why I keep coming back. Their customer service is impeccable. The sales staff were all so accomodating, so kind, even the ones not working with me wanted to see what ring I bought! It was really a lot of fun. I visit this store regularly. I love the clothing, but unless you are a size 8 or less, most things will not be available in your size. Oh yeah - they will order it for you - but in that case, I can probably order it myself for less money online. Get a hint - most American women are not size 2 or even size 6! Shock! When I find something but I am somewhat on the fence ( sales women outside the dressing room telling me I look marvelous) I am encouraged by the sales women to but it. If I don't like it I can always return it with the receipt. Sounds good - right? I recently bought a very expensive jacket to wear for a party. Turned out that a couple of days after I brought it home, I broke my foot and could not wear it. My husband then returned it to the store - tags on and handed over the receipt. Now they look at him and say "the lining looks wrinkled - this looks like it has been worn." When it comes to this kind of stuff - my husband didn't apparently know what they were getting at so he just looked at them and they refunded. Bottom line - be ready for this sales ploy by the sales staff. When I was in there a few days ago, a salesperson was all over me. "Just browsing" I told her. Once I picked up one or two items she was off to the dressing room with them. No matter where I went in the store, she would pick up a couple of items that were no where in my fashion sense wheelhouse. "How about this?" "How about that?" Once I went to the dressing room, apparently she felt it was her job to dutifully post herself outside the door. "I am here". "How's it going? I am still here." My husband has probably spent over $2k buying jewelry for me in the store over the last year. We were at the pandora counter after Xmas and they were busy - but no matter where we stood, salespeople kept waiting on someone else. "Take a number" we were finally told. Mind you, I am standing there with an orthopedic boot on looking for earrings priced well over $500 with my husband who has had both knees replaced. OK - fair is fair. We take a number. Then even though we have this number, the counter person keeps taking all comers. Well, I still have that money and they can keep those earrings! You know what they say about revenge! Though I still visit the store because I live in CP- I now know the tactics they employ to get you to purchase clothing.
