What...share my strawberry wafel?
Jory B.

I know they probably put crack on these waffles. Perfect hard crunch on the outside yet soft in the inside-hey that sounds like me! Anyway, i saw them cook the waffles & the batter looks like it's way thicker than the liquidy ones in the US. I didn't know waffles could taste this good! The stroopwafels is a must, don't just try a little bag. You'll regret it.

This huge stroopwafel filled with caramel was to DIE for

Poffertjes - Dutch Pancakes

Awesome poffertje cart on the boardwalk of Volendam. We ordered 60 (yes, 60!) and they were all…read morewhipped up within minutes. Freshly made, fluffy, warm, mini pancakes under a mountain of powdered sugar. The poffertjes were in our stomachs quicker than they took to make. I could go for another round or two right now.

When I was doing my research about Dutch dishes to try while we visiting the Netherlands, I most…read morefrequently saw two things: kibbeling (fried fish) and poffertjes (tiny buckwheat pancakes). This stand is in Volendam, a village in North Holland where you can really see the Netherlands' waterway engineering (the residential canals and reservoir being completely differently levels while side by side) and a stop in our tour. It involved us taking a boat across the Markermeer lake/reservoir to get there and, when you buy a snack from this stand, it's the Markermeer you're looking over in the background. Our tour guides actually arranged for us to have some free time and then meet back up in front of Harbour Restaurant De Lunch, the restaurant across the pathway from Poffertjes. I hadn't realized that poffertjes were made on the spot like this in a way that vaguely reminds of takoyaki stalls. Truthfully, I'm more a waffles person and not as big of a fan of pancakes. But the small size and the hotplate they use give it the very slightest bit of crispiness that I really like. Be aware that poffertjes generally can be served a sweet OR a savory dish, the savory often being specifically with cheese. This cart focuses on making sweet poffertjes with your chosen fruits, chocolate sauces, whipped cream, marshmallows, and candy. Price depends on size of the box, the number of toppings, and reflects that it's in a major tourist footpath/area (it practically overlooks where the tour boats dock), but it's really only a few euros. The pancakes themselves aren't too sweet, and I REALLY liked them with the strawberries. I think they went perfectly together. Meanwhile, my parents really liked it with the blueberries. And in hindsight, the milk chocolate sauce (definitely a sauce, as it doesn't coagulate given time) was a bit too sweet for my taste. Still good, but if I were to get it against, I'd get it with just the fruit. Overall, I think this was fun and I'm glad to check something else off my list of things to try on this list. It's a real treat (kind of reminded me of egg waffles) and an easy thing to grab then either sit down (there are plenty of benches along this road) and enjoy the view or continue sightseeing with. Of course, if you get it with chocolate sauce, get a LOT of napkins. Further research says that (as long as they're not soaked through) they can be microwaved to be eaten hot later, and that supermarkets would also have mixes for poffertjes the same way you have boxed pancake or waffle mix. Another souvenir, if you're interested. And if you're walking along the street/coast here, I'd recommend trying it.
