We cut down tall trees between our house and our neighbors and they installed LED lights in their bathroom that they sometimes keep on all night so I needed some blackout curtains for the bedroom. I've always heard about Wong's Draperies so stopped by to talk to them. I needed floor to ceiling drapes for two windows and wanted a heavier fabric. They came out and measured. Mel Wong, the owner, came out and looked at the room and suggested a fabric which was cheaper than the one I was looking at. I went with his suggestion and was glad that I did. It took over a month for the drapes to be made. I also wanted sheers behind the drapes so needed two rods. I like to have sheer curtains to add some privacy during the day or to shade the room a bit during mid-day. After the installation, the drapes started to hang on the carpet. I contacted Mel and he explained that it could be due to the weight of the drapes and came out and personally adjusted them. I appreciated his quick response. I'm very happy with the drapes and think they make the room look so nice. I also love the pull handles that make it so easy to open and shut the drapes. I hope they continue to stay in business as it would be hard to find someone else to do such quality work! read more

They sewed the draperies in my house which is on the State Historic Register and which we hope to place on the National Register of Historic Places. I just referred a friend there who is designing a mid-century modern house in our neighborhood. Their draperies are of outstanding quality. Reasonable prices for the selection of windows coverings. I went with the vertical blinds. They let you choose the color and design. The staff are friendly and answers any questions you have. Someone will come out to measure your window if needed. They then place the order for the custom blinds. Once received, an installer will come to your home to install it. read more

About 18mos ago, we were remodeling our condo and the curtain rods were rusted and have a very poor pull to it. The ball bearing rods we ordered from Wong's Drapery were the best we've ever had. Slides smooth as silk. Fast forward to today... we left the rods with our contractor 18mos ago to install. The drapes started to sag over time and a couple of bracelets came loose from the concrete ceiling. We bit the bullet and decided to contact Wong's and have their in house installer re-install our rod. Francis came out and now it slides much better, the drapes hang better, and the rod is so tight against the ceiling, a kid climbing the drapes won't pull it down. If I had another opportunity to install drapes and rods again, I would ask for Francis. read more

Shops like this is why I always refer to Yelp as my go to. I walked in with measurements and walked out with exactly what I needed within 10 minutes. The store has been family owned for over 70 years so it has a vintage feel through the front doors. There is an awesome display of nostalgia through the first corridor into the show room. I only needed to walk 15 feet into the store before we were directed to exactly what I needed. I wish I had spent more time there and would love to browse the shelves of samples. I always try to support local, family businesses but overall was a little disappointed with the service from Wong's (at their price point). It was often difficult to get a hold of them, or get a response to our emails. Our $1,300 set of custom blackout drapes (floor-to-ceiling, for just one room) took over 2 months for production. Which is fine, I understand it's a custom job - however, I wish they would've called us to let us know they were ready (before we got tired of waiting and called them to follow up). That said, we're very happy with the finished product! Nowhere else on island has the selection of fabrics and ability to do a completely custom job. read more

We were winding down from our recent home improvement projects and chose to replace all of our window coverings as our final project for the year. Several years ago, although we had all of our windows and glass doors tinted with a ceramic tint to reduce heat transmission and furniture fabric fading from our harsh Hawaiian sunlight, we installed a combination of Roman shades and wood shutters. We noticed a bit of fabric degradation in our curtains covering our living room sliding doors so we started to look for replacement. Wong's Drapery Shoppe has been around for decades and our family homes have window dressings from this company. So, when we walked into the showroom we felt a bit of family memories. Marieta greeted us and showed us around. She was soft-spoken, patient and genuinely interested in helping us with a selection. She was surprised how prepared we were with our window measurements and made a few recommendations. We looked at several fabric choices, colors and prices. In our minds, we had made a decision on the spot. But, we left to do comparison shopping and to discuss our decision. After checking out a couple of other places, we returned to complete a transaction. We asked how long it takes to make the drapes as we had upcoming travel plans. Marieta confidently said "3 weeks". The 3-week deadline was coming up when we received a call from Marieta. Our drapes were ready for pick-up. We didn't need installers as we were doing our DIY projects and THIS was going to be the easiest to do. It took us less than 20 minutes to remove our existing drapes, clean the window and door frames and hang the new set, which was sized perfectly. Our living room has been revived thanks to Wong's Drapery and looks marvelous! I should mention this business has a private parking lot which makes for a more stress less parking search and shopping experience on busy Beretania Street. After I returned the drapes with markers showing the width they should be, Wong's dis alter the drapes. I am very happy with the corrected drapes. I had inquired about blackout drapes because my condo gets way too much sun and is like an oven during the summer (and the afternoons of every season). Jan recommended just getting a thermal lining which is less heavy and less expensive than the blackout drapes. After they have been hanging for a while, I believe that the glare and temperature have significantly improved, just as Jan described. Overall, I am very happy with the drapes. If I could do it over again, I would still want to go to Wong's. I would just have to arrange time to have them come and do the measurements. read more

I love going to Family owned and runned businesses that have existed for generations. Wong's Drapery has been in business since 1947 and has survived I believe due to their exceptional customer service. A big shout out goes to Jan Wong. She not only gave us many helpful suggestions on the care of our drapes and how to attach the 2 panels to become one but even walked out with us to our car....just like how family/friends would do as you are leaving. Who does that?? We have been looking for room darkening drapes for awhile. Although they didn't have the exact size we needed we are extremely happy with our purchase. When I was looking for new drapes for our apartment, my dad suggested Wong's because they had been around forever and that was really the only name he knew in drapes locally. I decided to give them a try and stopped by one day for an estimate. At first glance, Wong's is sad. The outside isn't very inviting. It looks like they haven't changed all the curtains in their windows for 40 years! It's not modern at all. They are definitely keeping it old school. I went in and was "helped" by a woman who spoke very softly and wasn't very enthusiastic about selling me drapes. I didn't get much into selection at Wong's but I did get into price. She didn't really give me an estimate but she did write down some numbers on the small piece of paper I brought in (don't they have their own estimating note pad or something!?). Their prices were high. The quality looked the same as other shops I had looked at so I'm not sure why the big price difference. Also, I wanted custom drapes but she seemed intent in selling me ready made drapes that were a couple inches off of my measurements. Hmmm... Not loving the customer service at all. The store did seem big and looked to have a large selection of window coverings. I will give them that. First experience/set PERFECT! Second set mismeasured; too short. Willingly offered to lower (and did) but meant the track would show above the drapes (and does). Third set needed to match the first set; recv'd same color but completely different, lower-grade (IMO) fabric - I was off island when installed thinking "they have the specs - mismatch can't /won't happen". Because I wasn't there to reject the third set, I asked to keep the mismatched drapes for a 50% discount but was refused in favor of removal and full refund. REALLY? SO wasteful and hard-ass. I needed to come here to do a price check on replacing my curtains since my landlord said this is where she had gotten the curtains. I totally missed the parking garage because it is something you have to REALLY look for so I parked in the Times/Grace Inn lot. When I walked in, I felt that I was warped into a time machine. This place definetely still has that 60s vibe which I LOVE. They have lots of different options for curtains and the prices seem to be decent enough for what you are looking for. I did however, have to wait at least 10-15 minutes before being helped. The guy was at the counter helping an older woman with her purchase and it seemed that it was just him, but I guess there was a woman sitting in the back doing something. I am 21, so I probably dont look like a serious customer for these people so maybe that is why they didnt come quickly to help me out? Just my thoughts. When the woman did help us, she seemed to not want to at first since she probably didnt think I was being serious, but loosened up afterwards when we starting talking about replacing the track and getting new curtains (when we started talking about dropping dollars). This is a great family run operation that has the customer in mind. The people there are great and the product quality is high. I disagree with the reviewer that judged this place by its exterior. It is what's INSIDE that makes all the difference. The price I got for my new drapes with a thermal lining (called the Rio) was excellent. I have them up and the temp in my place with midday sun is 5 to 10 degrees cooler! Seriously. I have a thermometer and the improvement was that good. No A/C required! Yesterday, my wife received a message from one of the owners requesting to call her back. The owner sincerely apologized for the delay in the drapes, frustration dealing with Andrew, and explained a situation with him that we did not know about. She also mentioned that the company is taking steps to improve on their customer service, especially with folks who are working with Andrew. They've hired more people and trained their staff. I would like to thank the owner for contacting us, personally, to apologize and help us understand why it's been difficult with Andrew. With regards to the drapes, the owner assured us that they're following up with determining why it's taking their supplier so long and will let us know as soon as they receive an update. After listening to my wife explain her conversation with Wong's Drapery, I've regained a sense of confidence and respect for the company. We desperately needed drapes to blackout my infant daughter's room, and while we couldn't afford custom or ready-made for both of our large windows, Jan went out of her way to give us an excellent price on some drapes that were canceled on (still brand new though!)
