My father had some Hunter Douglas Vertical Blinds and he had passed away. The tilt gear wand was broken, and I am almost certain he purchased it from Design 5. Well, I've been corresponding with Ms. Miyashiro, she said she checked all their records and could not find anything with my parent's name. So, they refused to assist me, stop responding to my emails and correspondence. We end up going to A Blinds on Keeaumoku. They were fast friendly and told me that the parts are not available by Hunter Douglas anymore, but they tried searching the web and could not find a replacement part. We needed our lanai door blinds repaired. I called Design5 and they worked with me to find a good time, and made the date earlier because I was scheduled for a medical procedure. The two reps came over (slightly early !) took an hour to repair and did an excellent job. They were experienced and knew exactly what the problem was. Amazing a local company in business for number of years unable to find solutions created by them , As part of our major renovations we hired this company to install new blinds, They did so but by the following morning bubbles formed center of blinds, The crew came & supposedly repaired but again bubbles showed up ! Once again repaired it but this time slight indentation! occurred. They claimed when crew left it looked ok . We stopped further work because of time-consuming, paid in full-no compensation, no apologies except from crew. read more

We have purchased many window coverings from this company throughout the years probably spent in the thousands and I expected better customer service. Recently we had a problem with our roller shade being stuck . I call to see if they could send someone out to assess it. I was quickly quoted $120.00 (maybe to deter me to have them evaluate) just to come out with additional cost if needed. I did not know who else to contact so I asked them to call back with some options for appointments. I had to reach out to them after a few days and was reluctantly given a day two weeks away. I then searched Yelp and found a small company that could come and assess in three days for $35.00. The technician communicated with me prior and even was able to come early. He fixed the problem right away, tighten up all the brackets and gave a suggestion how to decrease the jammed cord from occurring again. The $35.00 service call was more reasonable! Next time I need window coverings I will use them and tell my friends of the excellent service. read more

We had some damage to our Hunter Douglas blinds, called Design 5 and they scheduled a technician to come out within the week. Very good technician, efficient and clean. He did a good job and the job was done pretty quickly. He had to "phone a friend" to double check, since the problem was something that he hasn't seen but after that was complete, he finished the job and remounted the curtains. I did not know how to share my disappointment with the customer service of design 5. So I decided to share pictures of the final product. I called design 5 to provide feedback because of the visible brackets of the roller shades. They did not disclose that the brackets would be seen from the outside of the house. Both the woman I talked to over the phone as well as the gentleman (he was the person who measured windows for roller shades) who came to look at the brackets were extremely rude. After seeing the brackets he told me 'You are the first person to complain about this' I was taken aback. My intention for the feedback was to ensure future customers be given all the information when deciding on window treatments. We were fully renovating our condo and needed window treatments to replace our old vertical and horizontal blinds that had been with us for over 25 years. With a "new" place, we wanted a new look for our windows and decided to try to take a look at Design 5 for ideas. The team at Design 5 were so friendly and helpful. They listened to what our requirements were and showed us several options to match our needs. We wanted light filtering, but black out option for the bedrooms since we live on a lower floor and people can see into our unit at night. After looking at several options, we selected the Hunter Douglas Pirouette Shades. Later that week, Clinton came over to the condo to take measurements and have us look at shade fabrics. He was so helpful in narrowing down our selection and making it easier for us to decide. In the end, we got sheer shades for the living room and dining room areas and blackout shades for the bedrooms. He later on in the day provided us with a quote and I returned to the store the next day to make payment where Clinton went over the order with me carefully. I really appreciated his help and patience. While the window shades were expected to come in 3-4 weeks, our shade came in just under 3 weeks! Super fast! We visited Design 5 on May 30 to give them our specs for drapes and shades. We were told they would call or send us an estimate for our needs on June 1 or at least by June 2nd. Today is June 6 and have not heard from them AT ALL. NO CALL NO EMAIL NOTHING. At this point will not do business with them ever. Probably would have been a $7K to $10K job for them. We just installed Hunter Douglas Roller Shades for our office which is a glass box on an old historic building in downtown/chinatown. Clint and his team were great to work with and helped us price the project a few different ways since cost/budget was a driving factor for our office. Previously we needed to use fans in our space but since the blinds were installed the office stays nice and cool. Supply chain is rough for everything but Design 5 made every effort to expedite and keep us in touch on the progress and delivery/install and everything held to the timeline and dates that we originally were given. We bought a large number of blinds (not cheap ones). An old gentleman came to measure. Months later, installers came to install. They tried to install the blinds that had been custom made, but they didn't fit. (none of them fit!!! They told us the windows had not been measured correctly (shutters were too wide for the windows). The installer also told us that the owners' Dad did the measurements and he makes a lot of mistakes. They took them back and reordered. Took 9 months to get the shutters we ordered finally. My husband also ordered another shutter for his office. Some 5 years later, we needed new shutters and the shutter in my husband's office fixed. Despite our previous problems, we called design 5 again because we thought they were the only window treatment company in Oahu. We needed new blinds for the kitchen and the blind in my husband's office (which was fairly new), was stuck. They explained that it would take months to fix the broken blind because they only work on broken blinds in-between installation jobs. Later they called and told us they did not want to do our job because the last job (described above ) had to be reordered. Guess what, they are NOT the only blind company in town. I'm really happy with how Design 5 treated us so I figured I'd write a review :-) In 2013 we bought a huge blind that takes up virtually a whole wall of our condo. It's big, very heavy to pull. It worked fine for 4 years but the gear began to grind down because of the heavy weight of the blind. It was very hard to raise and the pull beads would slip through the gears. We called them for a repair part and when they brought and installed it they mentioned about some other pull-assist part for large blinds that actually goes in the center tubing. It was a better and more permanent solution than just replacing the gear that would probably just grind down again. I didn't know about that new part when I called originally, but now that they told me about it, I told them I would MUCH rather have that. They left that day and placed an order for the permanent fix piece which took awhile to come. It came today and they were right on time at the early end of their arrival window of 1-3 (12:55). They quickly installed and tested it and only charged me for today's repair visit and waived the original repair visit cost since I decided to upgrade to the better part. It was a classy thing for them to do. I would definitely recommend them. read more

The response to my request to order replacement parts was slow and sporadic. When I went to pick up my pre-paid order, it was not complete. I had to make another appointment to return to get the rest of the parts ( they had cut strings too short) and was made to stand outside at first to count the number of clips on the string, even though I had an appointment. I had to ask the worker to let me in to count parts at a table. Just overall poor customer service. read more

I had Design 5 come out for a blinds estimate 2 years ago. I was looking for the best way to cut down on the heat in my condo without impairing the view. I decided to get window tinting instead. Two years later I realized tinting wasn't enough and I still needed blinds. Decided on Design 5 after checking with Wong's, Home Depot and Budget Blinds. Design 5 came out to do an estimate and they were extremely professional and helpful. They took the time to help me figure out what I wanted in terms of opacity, color and design. Here is why I chose Design 5: Wong's focuses on curtains and does not have many choices when it comes to blinds. Wong's also had a long wait to come out to do an estimate. Home Depot was the least expensive, but the salesperson who I spoke with at Home Depot was not knowledgeable about the products and told me to look through the book. Budget Blinds recently transitioned owners. Although they were helpful, they didn't have anywhere near the variety of choices of Design 5. They also had some reservations about the installation and did not even come close to the level of experience of the Design 5 team. Design 5 hands-down had the most choices available for blinds. I was impressed by their level of knowledge and liked the idea of supporting a local small business. I have a drop ceiling with concrete above, so the installation was not easy. They did an excellent job and the results were perfect. Six months after installation I am still very happy with my blinds. If you are in the market for window coverings, go with Design 5--you won't be disappointed! read more

Window coverings are an expensive event. After a remodel, wife and I converted a kids room into a living room in our ohana house. We put up a window "shade" from Wal Mart. That held up for a while until our neighbor decided to add a second story. Now we see eye to eye with our neighbors. And that is not a good thing. Whenever we want to run around in our skivvies, we have to do a "duck and roll" every time we go by the window facing our neighbor's house. Since we are tired of giving free peep shows we went looking for window coverings. We first stopped at Design 5 and were shown some shutters. We "shuttered" at the cost which is upwards of 4 digits for both of our windows. We did the noble thing and shopped around. Lowe's: "I'm sorry we would help you, but we have a needy woman who is complaining in front of you." Home Depot: (lady on phone while talking to us) "How much square footage?" "That'll be $18.00 per sq ft....you do the math!...(back to phone call) "Yes with a large drink." Stupid us acutally did the math and it came out to be about a million dollars. We then went back to Design 5 who quoted us an even more discounted rate than original because we are willing to wait for the next shipment. A nice man came to our house and did the measurements. He was on time and quick. A few weeks later the shipment came in and two nice guys came and professionally installed out shutters. They were on time too and took about 20 minutes to get the job done. Lifetime warranty is nice too. Now we have beautiful shutters and can walk around the house going commando without having to do commando exercises to avoid the neighbors. A coworker referred me to them in my search for new window blinds. Jae was very friendly and knowledgeable in explaining the different blinds and operating mechanisms they had to offer. I was pleased to get a ballpark estimate quickly based on the size of my windows before leaving. I received a small window magazine to take home for further reading. Once I decided to go with Design 5, they came to my condo to do a site survey and get accurate window measurements. They brought a catalog of material samples and colors so I could see how it would actually look on my windows. The site survey was free by the way. I was emailed a quote a few days later. Upon committing to purchase the items on the quote, I had to pay half of the cost up front. The other half was due after the installation. I had to wait 3-4 weeks for the materials to be shipped from the mainland because they are all custom made. After the materials came in, they called me to schedule a day and time for the installation. They were really fast. It took about 1.5 hours. The installers left no mess and provided training on how to operate and maintain the blinds. The blinds I chose were pricey, but they work really well at keeping the heat out. Plus they come with a lifetime warranty! They qualified for a tax rebate, which Design 5 mailed me all the necessary paperwork to make the process a breeze. I highly recommend Design 5! read more

Approximately 15 years ago we purchased and had installed "shutter blinds" in our kitchen. We were and are very pleased with their quality and the professionalism of the installers. Twice, since they were installed, repairs were needed. Most recently one side needed to be reattached to the operating lever. When licking them up, there was no charge for the repair. I knew I wanted window treatments for a house my wife and I just bought, but was unsure of what to get. We went to the showroom and Jae showed us all the different options; from Plantation Shutters to Automatic blinds. She was never pushy and didn't try to up sell us. I really felt she had our best interest in mind, and was very helpful in our decision to go with Plantation Shutters. Before we decided to use Design 5 I went to Lowes, thinking their Plantation Shutters would be significantly cheaper. I wasn't impressed by the quality of Lowe's shutters and the quote came back about the same as the Hunter Douglas shutters which are significantly nicer. The ordering and installation process went super smooth. I couldn't be happier how everything turned out, I"ll definitely use Design 5 in the future and recommend my family and friends. read more

Only with time and experience does one learn whether or not the products a company offers are good and reliable. I guess this is what you'd call learning the hard way. In 2016, I purchased new drapery with installation from this company. Now six years later, the clips -- not just a few but the majority of them -- that hold the drapes are breaking faster than you can spit. I get that weather adds to the wear and tear of a product but it seems that these plastic clips were not of a good caliber to begin with (had I known that when I bought the drapes I would've asked if there were alternate clips to the cheaper ones and which would last longer). I would've gladly paid a little more for a better piece of equipment. Today when I called to ask for repair advice since so many of the drapes are barely hanging, I was told it would be "5-6 weeks." That's not the kind of answer a customer wants to hear when the wind is threatening to blow all of the drapes off the track. read more

My husband and I stopped in one day to get a quick estimate for curtains for our apartment. We were helped right away and I was surprised at how fast the estimate took. They have a large selection of curtains to pick from and most are available very soon for installation. We continued to look around and get other estimates but ended up with Design 5 because of their customer service and price. You really can't beat them. Buyers beware when purchasing Hunter-Douglas shades from Design 5. Customer service is great when purchasing, but poor when it comes to warranty repairs. The plastic chain to roll up/down the shades frequently breaks. While the cheap plastic chain is free, they charge over $100.00 to come to your house to change it. To avoid the charge you will need to bring it to their store and leave it. They will NOT give you a completed repair date as they will work on it whenever they have time after they service new customer installations. It you decide to replace the plastic chain to metal it will cost you $25.00. You are NOT buying quality. I highly suggest that you shop around as they good quality shades at a lower price like I did for my other windows. read more
