I've used the Woodfield Veterinary Clinic for the care of my cats for the last forty years. The staff is friendly and efficient. They recommend the best care for my animals but do not try to pressure me to have tests or procedures performed if they aren't 100% necessary. (such as dental care or blood work for an extremely elderly animal) One of my 17+ year old cats was euthanized this week. Dr. Spelman was very compassionate with both my cat and me just as Dr. Skipton has been when it was time for my previous elderly animals to cross the rainbow bridge. read more

Was overcharged and treated disrespectfully after making the difficult decision to euthanize my cat. and ended up getting yelled at by the vet. I had a past-due charge attached to the invoice and called to inquire. I was transferred to the vet who told me it was for lab work that had been canceled. When I tried to explain, he became defensive and accused me of attacking him! Although he said he would take care of it if it was wrong, I am heartbroken at the lack of compassion and sensitivity I was shown. This was my first experience at Woodfield Veterinary Clinic and it is most certainly my last. I am basing this review on how I was treated as well as the lack of communication and confusion over what tests were performed and billed. I just lost my best friend, try to do better. read more

I have been taking my pets to Dr. Skipton for over 40 years! This man TRULY cares about animals, has decades of experience & knowledge, is humble and always willing to help an animal in need. One time, he left his Thanksgiving family dinner to meet me at the clinic, to help my beloved rabbit. Another time, I know about, there was a truck with pigs destined for slaughter that over turned. Dr. Skipton was the ONLY Veterinarian to show up and help. The pigs were rescued and lived their lives at an animal sanctuary- (Poplar Springs in Poolesville, MD. Amazingly kind people and a beautiful place to visit). Dr. Skipton always considers your input, respects your knowledge and will take his time to help (whether in person or on the phone). Most Veterinarians today, insist that you come in and then insist on illogical & expensive diagnostics because that's what 'The Manuals/Books' say. Dr. Skipton treats cases individually. My one cat is a "Bad Kitty" at the Vet Clinic because she's scared. Dr. Skipton & staff, have always been very patient and kind with her. I wish I could find a Doctor for myself, like Dr. Skipton - truth! read more

After your intervention my dog, Paddy, cried in agony, had seizures and after several hours had to be put to sleep. Your response to my letter of concern was that everything you did was appropriate. It is now clear how this was appropriate: After returning to your office because the treatment the day before was ineffective and questioning you regarding testing I was told "why test - if it is cancer or something what are you going to do about it" Your examination that day was brief and then you gave an injection. Within a hour of leaving your office I called concerning the bad reaction Paddy was experiencing - I was told to just wait. Shortly thereafter I called again and was told the Vet had left. I asked the secretary to please call you because of the bad reaction and was told she would not do that. I spoke again asking if I could have my dog put to sleep and was told I would have to go somewhere else. After the approximate 3-4 hour period watching my dog scream in pain and have multiple seizures I was forced to go to the emergency room where he was immediately put to sleep. The seizures were so violent that on the way he was thrown off the car seat. These were my last moments with my sweet dog of 15 years. Despite my desperate calls the day before, I received no follow up calls, ever. I then received a sympathy card with no name. I had not told the vet that my dog died, but was aware of gossiping going on in her office concerning my dog, which is not professional. My daughter, a nurse, and more well versed in pharmaceuticals left several messages to find out what drug was given to my dog, but she never received a call back. If your treatment was appropriate, you would have known what you were treating and this horrific reaction would not have occurred. Bad reactions can happen in medicine, however, how you handled it from beginning to end was not appropriate. In all fairness to this Vet, she came to my home prior to this and euthanized a cat with cancer and did a wonderful job. I cannot speak to why she handled Paddy's case so miserably, but on Paddy's behalf and other potential pets, people should be aware. Her intervention traumatized us both and I cannot think of Paddy without feeling sick about it - his agony is haunting. I don't understand how this was appropriate care and got no closure from your letter - it just appeared you cared only about liability. It may be helpful for me to contact the Board of Veterinary Medicine and maybe they can provide answers that will help with closure of this. read more

Dr. Skipton and his team at Woodfield Vet are top notch. I use them personally for my cat and dog, but I also use them on our farm for our various sheep, goats, pigs, etc. They handle farm visits extremely well and have a ton of experience working with farm animals. They'll never try to take advantage of you and all pricing is fair and reasonable; which is all I want out any business deal: Fairness. They are also very responsive and have an emergency off hours program that is a lifesaver. They are also a family run business. Which is worth something, to me at least. As long as they're around I won't be needing another vet. read more

I have had amazing experiences with Dr Skipton and, when he has been out of town, Dr. Spelman in taking care of my goats. They offer the best emergency after hours care and are so responsive and attentive. Their prices are fair and reasonable. I highly recommend this practice:) read more

We have been taking our pets here since moving to Damascus and have always received excellent service. When one of our dogs seriously injured himself, they went out of their way to nurse him back to health and did not overcharge us (in general, fees have been less than we have paid at prior vets). Our doggie is doing well and we are extremely grateful to Woodfield Vet Clinic. read more

For times like these, I wish Yelp offered a zero star option. Instead of taking responsibility for making a serious error that most likely lead to a worsening condition for one of our cats, the vets at this clinic chose to try to bully me into submission in the hopes of deflecting attention away from their own incompetence. If you like being treated in a callous manner dripping with disdain, then, by all means darken the doorstep of this atrocious clinic. For the rest of us, thank goodness these jokers aren't the only game in town. read more

Dr. Skipton and his staff were wonderful! Our cat was treated for a clogged anal gland that turned into an abscess. When it was time to pick up our cat after surgery, Woodfield Rd was close due to a down telephone pole. One of the vet techs actually brought our cat to our neighborhood because we couldn't get to the clinic! The staff was always so thorough with their explanations on what was going on with our kitty and how to nurse her back to health. I felt that the price of the treatment was reasonable as well. This is a great family run clinic. Dr. Skipton has over 30 years of experience and is always polite and courteous. We take both our dogs their for over 7 years and have never had any issues. I have been taking my dog to Woodfield Veterinary Clinic since she was 7 years old, and she's now 18...which is a testament to the wonderful care she's received there. About 95% of my experience is with Dr. Skipton (the owner) and I've appreciated his honesty and compassion through every situation. My dog has had quite a few injuries and illnesses over the years and Dr. Skipton has always taken the conservative approach rather than trying to convince me to spend more money on useless tests or procedures. He's always been available simply for consultations and advice and even lending a compassionate ear when I thought the worst was going to happen. He has many years of experience and I completely trust his advice and guidance. The staff is equally as wonderful. If you live in the area, or even if you don't (I live in DC and still take my pup there), and want the best care for your pet, I would highly recommend Woodfield Veterinary Clinic. read more

We have been taking our animals (cat and dog) to Woodfield Vet for over 11 years and have always been extremely pleased with the knowledge and quality care our animals get from the veterinarians. They are a small practice which allows them to spend time with you answering questions, giving advice and throughly examining our pets and providing options for care. We really appreciate the personalized experience we get each and every time. The rates are very reasonable and usually less than the average vet fees in this area. Five years ago our dog got very ill and spent about 2 weeks at the vet in their care while they nursed her back to health. The final bill was not cheap but WAY LESS than what we have paid at other vet's for far less treatment. The doctors worked with us to provide her the best care but did not recommend expensive or excessive treatments that were not needed. read more

I have taken my cat, an older dog and now a puppy to Woodfield Vet and have really been pleased. There is a real family feel to the place and they have taken good care of us and our pets. Dr. Skipton is definitely the dog guy while Dr Spelman is the cat lady. If you live reasonably nearby, definitely try out this practice. read more

I have taken my new dog twice to Woodfield Veterinary Clinic and both times I have been blindsighted by a huge bill. The first time I just wanted a wellness exam and ended paying close to $300. The second time (today) I took him because I thought his anal glands may need to be expressed (fun). I thought this would cost about $30. When the doctor came in he did a full exam, the anals, and then a blood test for heartworms and lyme disease. The total was $155 and he didn't need his anal glands expressed HE WAS CONSTIPATED. I am angry at myself for not letting my dog get better on is own, but I'm also irritated about being pressured into the blood test, and that no one said hey, we're going to examine the rest of your dog too so it's going to be $50 extra. NEVER GOING BACK. read more

Dr Skipton is a great vet. It was today, Labor day and my dog was very sick suddenly. She was older and I knew she was terminal. I called Dr Skiptons answering service as his office was closed all labor day weekend. He called back and agreed to come in at 8pm to open his office to put my very sick dog down. I did not want to let her suffer even one more night and I am grateful for this kindness from Dr Skipton. read more
