Not sure what people are expecting from a barber, but I loved this place and walked away with an excellent cut and FYI my hair was shaggggggggyyyyy. Maria, the owner, seems like my kind of people. She's from CT, just outside NYC and the shop reflects that. From the music and decor to the conversation and style. I'm from Ohio, just outside Cleveland, and this is my comfort zone when if comes to haircuts. It's straightforward, detail oriented (my edges were super clean and there was a lot of repeated buzzing to get all the tips right), and quick, in and out in about 30 mins. I never know the terminology of what I want or how long, but she was patient and asked me enough questions to get to the bottom of what I needed done to my hair. I'll be sporting my new do tonight to go out dancing. Not sure what's up with all the bad press about this place, but maybe it's not trying to cater to the typical Yelper, it's catering to the typical human. I'm not gonna lie, I think Mainers are spoiled when it comes to expectations from store and restaurant owners. I would probably use the word sheltered. There was music playing with swear words, but she asked if she should turn it off., of course I said no. But she asked. I grew up listening to Bone Thugs and Harmony and Biggie. The most rude and awful customer service I ever experienced literally had to say something about a little child not sitting still enough on a couch. The biggest fucking cunt I ever witnessed. May be echoing some of the other reviews here, but... To their credit I was a walkin and got in pretty quickly. That's where the positive stops. There was only one person in the shop and she could hardly be bothered to look up from her phone. The floor hadn't been sweeped, had to step around someone else's hair to sit down. There was another person that had come in but was a few minutes late for a scheduled appt. She took it personal and made him wait until I was done. Would have been fine waiting for him. Being a walkin I had some gel in. Not a drop of water touched my hair. My cut is straight forward, buzzed on side and back, a little longer on top. She only used buzzers, which means I have quite a few longer hairs sticking out. Took a call during my cut and I was turned around feom the mirror the whole time, about 12 minutes. All for the low low price of 40 bucks for the laziest cut I've ever had. Definitely will not go back read more

Had a very odd experience there. When I showed up for my appointment I wasn't greeted beyond, "you have an appointment?" And then, "use the hand sanitizer and sit down". That was about the extent of our conversation, which is fine, except the person kept answering the phone in the middle of my cut and then would continue cutting my hair while taking reservations--with one hand! I was flabbergasted honestly. I wasn't offered a drink, and the whole cut lasted 30 minutes. My hair was really long, and she cleaned it up fine, thought within a couple days the flyaways and other tell tale signs of a lazy cut became apparent. Overall the experience was extremely awkward. I've been to plenty of these "bespoke barbershops" and they definitely run the gamut in terms of quality and price... BUT... I've never had an experience where the barber made me feel like I was annoying them by being there. Bizaare. read more

I've walked by Woodgrain a few times and decided to try them out for a new haircut. I opted to walk in and was greeted right away and had a very short wait while a couple of the barbers wrapped up their conversations. I showed my barber a pic of the hairstyle my wife wanted me to get and told him he had creative control over the details. He immediately got to work and after nearly an hour, I walked away feeling spiffy as hell. The ambiance and the space here is nice and it feels like you're walking into a new school barber shop in Brooklyn. There are three barber chairs and three barbers on staff. They each had fun personalities and seemed to love all being together for their days. As for the cut, it was easily one of the most well executed haircuts I've received. I'm over a week in and still love it - tight fade on the sides and a little edging done to keep me hip (not requested, just done and my wife loves it). read more

Maria gave me one of the best haircuts I've had in my life. She was very accommodating and was very fun to chat to (and sing along with -- by the way, nice playlist!) The atmosphere is great and all the girls who work here are amazing. They're a little pricy, but definitely worth it for the service I received. I went in on a Saturday to try it for the first time. There were three barbers working at the time and maybe 5 people in seats. I asked how long the wait would be. The girl replied about 25 minutes. So I sat and waited. Time crept by and we were now up to 1 hour of waiting. I then again asked for an update and was told I only had two ahead of me. Another 30 minutes pass. I am now to 1 1/2 of waiting. Prices were also high for a man's haircut. I gave up and left. They made no attempt to try and apologize or offer a scheduled appt at a later date. Went in to get a haircut. The lady was extremely rude. I was trying to ask her questions and I had forgotten I was in front of the door. One of the coworkers was trying to come back in and the owner snapped at me saying "let her in". I asked if I could get a haircut right now or had to call in an appointment, she just said "ask her" referring to her employee. I walked out. Didn't even get my haircut there. You won't get my money. I went to this barbershop as a walk in so I expected to wait, I did not expect to wait for over 20 minutes while the only two employees went to the bathroom so one could wash the others hair. This is something that should be done outside of business hours especially when clients are waiting. The haircut was sub par and expensive. Pretty sure this is a front for something else going on. I called to asked the price for a cut, the person who answered told me depending on what I wanted it starts at $30. I drove by the next day, it didn't look busy so I stopped in. I patiently waited for over an hour. Just when I thought it was my turn some guy walks in and immediately sat in the chair like he owned the place. I took my son who is autistic there and I was extremely displeased. The owner lady was so rude and had absolutely no patience with a 17 year old boy on the autism spectrum. Never in my life have I gotten such a terrible haircut. I should genuinely call the cops for the robbery that just happened. Literally cut my hair in about 8 minutes, sloppy as fuck, sliced a mole on the side of my face wide open where I just sat there with blood dripping down my face while she just continued.. literally smashing the clippers up against my head completely unevenly and literally aggressive. I don't know if this chick was just in a bad mood or what but God damn I'll never ever go back even for a free cut. I asked for a short high fade with scissor on top, this chick took the clippers and a comb through my entire top instead of bothering to even cut it properly.. not only is the entire top completely uneven, it's way to short in some places and too long in others. I never write reviews, truthfully, so if that tells you how unbelievably atrocious of a haircut that was.. stay far away! read more

Awful. Staff was unfriendly; the woman working did not even bother to greet most of her customers. The place was a mess: none of the hair from previous customers had been cleaned up. Perhaps the worst part of the experience was the fact that the entire place was not kid friendly. While I understand that some places are not meant for kids, I called in the morning and the man who answered the phone assured me they handled kid's cuts. Doesn't clean ANYTHING in between cuts. Watched 3 guys get haircuts... didn't clean any combs, clippers, guards, etc. Chopped off my sideburns without asking and took the clippers to my eyebrows. Easily the worst haircut of my life and poor attitude on top of it all. read more

To start off with, I had to wait 30 minutes sitting there while the barber was actually sitting on the couch the whole time. This was my first time at this place and I had no idea who the barbers were. She didn't know if she was leaving so she asked me if my haircut was quick or long and I told her that my hair does not take too long. I proceeded to get the worst, hour long haircut I have ever received, which then cost me $30. She was texting on the phone during my entire haircut. During one instance, her messaging took about 5 minutes before she proceeded to continue cutting my hair. The front was asymmetric and there were patches that were just too long and uneven but I couldn't see that until I get home because I didn't even get a chance to take a look at it before she moved onto the next customer. I posted this elsewhere but figured I should add this to yelp. I went to this barbershop for a normal trimming where just to describe the barber because I didn't pick up his name was a middle eastern guy. He didn't even make my hair trimmed evenly and was very bad I have found three big clumps of hair that weren't even touched and I just saw that my sideburns were uneven with large part of there still there. Overall all he could do was trim the sides of my hair with a razor(couldn't even do that correctly) and hardly touched the top of my hair. He also instead of even focusing on my haircut got into a long conversation with a customer and I believe wasn't even very focused on my haircut. While in this conversation there was very vulgar language and did not seem like a nice place. I am extremely dissatisfied and I believe this barber should be fired if this is all he can do. I believe for a 30 dollar trimming that it should at least be even. read more
