A nice place for a little alone time. Don't bother going down the side streets looking for parking. That is all private property. There's parking on the street as you're pulling up to the beach. Maybe 7-9 spots I believe. If you go May-June you will see horseshoe crabs. There's a sign to show you how to turn them over so they don't die on the land if they're upside down. When we arrived, I was juggling a bunch of stuff and heard someone yelling from a house-like structure that we needed to pay. It was a little awkward since payment isn't collected near the entrance, but she apologized for shouting and explained they try to catch guests right away. Totally understood--and I had every intention to pay once I set our things down! The kids had a blast in the water and loved the volleyball net. We weren't thrilled about the ducks everywhere, but other families seemed to enjoy them. The snack shack had lunch options and snacks at reasonable prices. Just a heads-up: it's cash only for both admission and food. All in all, a great day outdoors with plenty of space and friendly vibes!

Unlike Jersey, I saw evidence of campfires on this beach, as well as 2 cars, and other ATV mule-type vehicles. While a fire on the beach at night seems SOOO fun, I respect why this is not permitted in NJ, and was a little concerned about the legality of it in DE. Cars on the beach are just not cool. It can severely damage the ecosystem and/or dunes, not to mention the hundreds of crab burrows I saw in the sand. And of course these idiots got their car stuck, and spent an hour pushing it out of the sand. Leave your car on the road. All that aside, Broadkill Beach is a very cool beach, in a small one-road community near Milton, DE. The beach itself is beautiful, with tranquil bay waters. I did not see any jellyfish, thank goodness, nor shark fishermen, like I do in Cape May County. This made me feel more safe with my toddler swimming. No lifeguards, but that means no beach tags. Just beware the current, because it's strong. You can get some medium waves, but not huge. Nice long stretch to walk. Many people had dogs with them. Most dogs were leashed, which was so appreciated, and showed their respect for the environment, and welfare of others. There is free public parking just off the road leading to the beach. Main beach entrance is right there. General store is right across from parking, with all kinds of supplies. This place has such a relaxed, safe, fun, beachy vibe!

You drive through a bunch of marshland to get to Fortescue, which is both a small town and a public beach. Several restaurants are in town, in addition to other local businesses. They even have a post office! There is ample paved parking (FREE) along the breakwater wall between the sand of the beach and the road. The strip of beach is a decent length, not like those at the large traditional Jersey Shore beaches, but walkable, clean, and free of nature debris, so you can set your gear up there for a day at the beach. Beach fishing happens there all year; anywhere along the bay is super popular with fishermen. No rough surf like is present on the Atlantic side of the NJ peninsula, and unlike the Atlantic side, you can see the sunset over the water here. There are multiple preserves and hiking trails around this town, and bustling Millville is just over 20min away. At the time of this review, it appears there is at least one commercial lodging option to stay in town (in addition to private rentals). Roads are paved and flat, so this is a fun place to ride bikes as well. I have not visited in summer, but with the vast acreage of nearby marsh, I would expect the bugs to be fierce in warm months. Summer crowds may be a factor too. The best time to visit, IMO, is the off-season!

We unfortunately arrived after the visitor center closed but called before it closed to ask for the passport stamp to be on a piece of paper and left outside for us and they DID!!! Also Included was a brochure with two stickers of the local wildlife. The horseshoe crab is the official marine animal of Delaware and plays an important role in Delaware Bay ecosystem. Also a sticker of a red knot. It's one of the longest annual migrating birds on Earth traveling up to 9,300 miles and during their spring migration most of them can be found in the Delaware Bay region. It was nice to enjoy the auto tour. We did hike up to one of the observation decks for a video and view but it started to rain so we took advantage of the paved auto tour. Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge protects one of the largest remaining expanses of tidal salt marsh in the mid-Atlantic region. The refuge, located along the coast of Delaware bay, is mostly marsh, but also includes freshwater impoundment and upland habitats that are managed for migratory birds and other wildlife. Established in 1937 as a link in the chain of refuges extending from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. It is primarily a refuge and breeding ground for migrating birds and other wildlife. The value and importance of Bombay Hook for migratory bird protection and conservation has increased through the years, primarily due to the management of the refuge and the loss of high quality habitat along the Atlantic Flyway.  Very happy we came today.
