The libraries I grew up visiting had 90s flair, and while amazing spaces that kept me entertained all summer long, they didn't have the grandeur of an iconic inner city library - like this one. The first time I stepped foot in here as a young adult I was in awe. It's just a gorgeous building, and incredible atmosphere to sit and read. The parking garage is set up to look like a bookshelf which I think is cute, and I love how you can just get lost in here and enjoy the space. It just FEELS like a library which sounds dumb but is true. What pushes this into five star territory for me though is the rooftop terrace. On a nice day there really isn't a better spot for an urban picnic.

So for this sole experience I wouldn't use my library card. The area in downtown doesn't offer many parking options and the garage is high.

And then there are tours of the historic trees and tree peonies in the Arboretum, and bird walks. And almost all are free to attend! Even if at first think I may not be interested when I read the description of one of their presentations, once there, I find I couldn't possibly be more wrong! Today's was the screening of one of the most fascinating (and humorous) films I've ever watched, "From Fossils to Flesh," about the the development and creation of incredibly detailed life-sized sculptures of dinosaurs for the Edelman Fossil Park & Museum of Rowan University in New Jersey. All of the creatures were brought to life in the studio of world-renowned Paleoartist, Naturalist, Maker, Sculptural artist, Gary Staab, in Kearney, Missouri. I highly recommend googling The Linda Hall Library to check out their many FREE offerings, and you'll not only be enticed to attend, but you might also want to sit down and read from the vast collection of historic and modern books and publications in this renowned science library!

What a fantastic library!…read more I've been wanting to come to the Life Beyond Earth exhibition since it opened in October 2024. I got here near the end of April in 2025. It closes in June. Glad I made it! This exhibition does a great job of covering a lot about outer space, including, but not limited to, aliens, exoplanets, UFOs, astrobiology and exobiology. There are various displays throughout the rooms covering astronomy, the history of observation of space from the Renaissance, all the way up to the Tic Tac and Gimble UAPs. There's also a very nice display about historical cookbooks and different recipes used early in the 20th century and by various branches of the US military to feed their troops. Everyone working here was very kind and welcoming. There is free parking directly in front of the library for patrons, not for students. Just FYI, the Linda Hall Library is on the campus of UMKC.

This library is probably not quiet as comfortable as the Mid-Continent Libraries that are spread throught Missouri on the other side of the river. But you can tell they tried to copy some of that vibe. Wifi is fast and lots of librarians. In fact, there are so many librarians here I wonder what they do all day.

And this sounds silly, but their water fountains have the coldest water in the world -- it's so awesome during the summer. They have several computer sections and the different boundaries are better defined. All adult books are on the ground floor and the kids and teen books are upstairs (with a play section too, which is awesome). And I love the self-checkout -- it means I don't have to wait in line, and nobody judges me when I want to check out a Baby-Sitters Club book.

We checked out some toddler board books for my grandson. I do wish they had a better selection of board books. I feel like it was difficult to select appropriate books for him from the selection they had.

I was surprised to see all of the diverse books on the shelves and pamphlets available with information for what Juneteenth means! The library staff aren't the most welcoming, but if you have questions they will answer in depth. This place just isn't for books, they have dvds, host book discussions, art and exhibitions. So cool that they offer FREE career development classes from finance to sewing! The new Black & Veatch MakerSpace is dedicated to those wanting to learn or refresh sewing skills or basics of metal casting. The BEST part is that they have book clubs for kids in 1st grade all the way to high school and a few that get active! With all of the events no local child should be bored this summer!
