The Woodsmith Store is amazing!!! During the remodeling of our home, we ran into constant hassles finding the items we needed in the big box stores. We would talk to sales associates who were clueless and would subsequently sell us the wrong item. A case in point was some pie hinges for our new custom kitchen cabinets. When I finally was so frustrated with the home improvement stores, I walked into the Woodsmith Store and they knew immediately what I needed. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and actually seem to be woodworkers, not just clerks wandering aimlessly. While there I also visited the garden center and was awed by the selection and the knowledge of the staff. I will be back time and time again!!! read more

Didn't even this place existed until we had to enter a pinewood derby competition. This place will cut your block of wood to the shape you want for free. You don't even have to buy the block from them. The man who did the cut for both kids was awesome. He showed them after the cut how there are now grooves from the cuts they need to sandpaper off. He also showed us the different grades of sandpaper we needed to get it smooth. I love this place. Very helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly staff. read more

Most definitely one of my favorite shops. They have a little bit of everything. Very impressive paint section and staff. I mention this because 99% of the paint joints I have been in with the exception of Sherwin Williams, have been underwhelming. The Woodsmith Paint section has a good staff, nice selection and fair prices. They even have a color specialist which is huge for the color challenged like myself. read more

The Woodsmith Store is a great store for all of the woodworking tools and supplies that you might need. There is a nice selection of lumber, though you will pay for the finished cuts. Not only are there power tools on the floor to view and purchase, but lots of hand tools as well. Lots of supplies are available for any wood projects. There is also a nice area of the store with kitchen supplies, including dip/soup/bread mixes and other gifts from local artisans. In season, the garden center is one of the best around - we have bought fruit trees from here as well as some vegetable plants, and they are very high quality. Each spring and fall, the store offers a seminar series each Thursday night on specific topics. We have attended several of these. Purchase your ticket at the door or ahead of time and then learn and watch an expert demo the topic for the night. The ticket is also a $5 off coupon in the store, so the events are well worth your time and money! read more

My husband and I have passed this store for the past 3 years without stopping. We finally made it inside and I can already tell this will be one of my husband's favorite places to go. It is a great woodworking shop with everything you need for that hobby. Women may also enjoy the store as there are items for gardening, painting, cooking, etc. Very clean and helpful staff too. read more

I drive from Omaha once a year to visit The Woodsmith Store. It's an incredible place for quality tool junkies. Their selection of wood is also pretty wide if you're interested in domestic hardwoods. Their exotic selection is rather limited and you may be better served looking online. As a turner, I am always looking for oddball woods, and they have a nice selection of blanks. It's a little hit and miss (Then again, I only go there once a year). Prices are pretty fair. They're a bit higher than online purchases, but it's always nice to see what you're getting. read more

Was in Des Moines on other business and after watching the TV show for years, decided to check out their store. Came across that they carry ¾" hickory plywood that I had been searching for. (They also stock many other types) Had previously ordered a sheet from a big box store and the delivered product was unusable. Ordered from a local lumberyard and came as mdf, also unusable. Woodsmith ripped the sheet in half, no charge, so it would fit in my SUV. Thank you Woodsmith Store! read more

This IS a great woodworking store. If you happen to be male. I've walked in here with pockets full of cash, ready to buy a table saw, and couldn't get one person to acknowledge me. (And that's not the first time its happened or the first time I've mentioned it to management.) I'm not wasting time in the Festool display because I'm waiting for my husband. I'm upgrading tools.... somewhere else. Women woodworkers are treated, at best, as talking dogs. They're amazed we can do it at all. read more

A nice woodworking store. I have been in Des Moines twice in the past year for personal business and have stopped in both times. I wish I lived closer-this would become my preferred store. 2 weeks ago I bought a small, 3" speed square while I was there and my son took a liking to it. Unable to find them anywhere online, and listed as 'discontinued' by Bridge City Toolworks, I called the store. I spoke with a salesperson who quickly and professionally took my order and will ship the items to me. read more

The selection here is outstanding. Decent prices. Staff more knowledgeable than those at the box stores -- I really got the impression that they're not just doing this for a paycheck. Great place for the woodworking hobbyist. read more
