The club offers an 18-hole (par 71) layout with five sets of tees (black, blue, white, gold, and silver), a driving range, a putting green, and a clubhouse/19th hole restaurant. Maybe I went in with too high of expectations, but I was a bit disappointed at the course conditions for it being a country club. Tee boxes were overgrown and felt more like teeing up on short rough rather than manicured, short-cut grass. Greens were slow, made worse by the recent aeration that left every putt even more slow and incredibly bumpy. And, at least from the back tees, several holes require you to hit blindly over a hill, so it's difficult to see the hole's route or where your ball ends up. At the end of the day, you're playing golf, which is great, and this is one of the few courses in Staunton, but I wouldn't return to play here again.

Such a great surprise. We were staying in Massanutten, and the courses were full due to a…read moretournament going on; so, the pro at Massanutten sent us to Packsaddle - so happy he did. This course is a diamond in the rough. Green fee was $40 for a Friday morning and the pro, Brad, could not have been better. Friendly, helpful, and full of tips to help us out. It's on the side of the mountain, so every shot is either up the mountain or down - which makes the day interesting. Brad even brought us lunch on #11 green so we wouldn't have to wait for him to make it and hold up our round. My one, and only, complaint is that the grass was longer than it should have been; but, in their defense that part of VA has been pounded with rain lately, so it was still wet and I'm too mushy to mow. The greens were ridiculously in good shape.

My sister and I were at the greens and we went past the white signs off to the side in the rough (still 30 yards from the putting green) we were in the wrong but it was an honest mistake we thought as long you stayed 30 yards it was okay. He was so rude and degrading. He talked to us like we had never played golf in our lives which I'm assuming is because we are two young women. He was tapping the rules and told us to read it three times as we were sitting in the cart. I was honestly in shock at how hateful and disrespectful he was. On top of that why is he acting like the course doesn't look like this?

The course itself is genuinely nice and the main reason anyone should book. Everything else? A major letdown for the price. The lodging was horrendous at $200 a night. We were put in an ant-infested house with uncomfortable single army-style beds and just one bathroom for the group. Ants were everywhere--covering the stove and crawling inside the refrigerator. When we reported it to the front desk, they seemed completely apathetic. No urgency, no real solution, just shrugs. The on-site Miller restaurant delivered some of the worst service I've experienced at any resort. Our waitress didn't get a single part of any order correct during the entire four-day stay. It was comically bad. Look, if you're coming for the golf, you'll enjoy the course. But I'd strongly recommend finding lodging elsewhere. Unfortunately in Newmarket, options are limited, so just go in with low expectations for everything off the fairway.

Got out to Ingleside for the first time this season on 4/20. I have never seen the course in…read morebetter shape. It's still run on a shoestring, seems to me, but the golf course itself (which is the main point, right?) is in as good shape as any of the public courses I play within one hour of Charlottesville. It is better than some which cost far more. Clearly it has benefitted from a wet spring, preceded by a wet winter and summer, because I have seen this course dry out badly. Right now though, it is soft and green, with only #17 showing any sign at all of oversaturation (and it was not bad). It is also evident to me that a real effort has been made to up the course maintenance. The greens, which in the best of times previously I would have to call marginal, were actually quite good throughout - no exceptions. Sand traps -- all filled. Fairways lush with "real" grass (not Bermuda). Rough well cut so as to be not "wild". Just very good all around. And as has always been the case, I don't know where you can golf more for less. It cost us $50 apiece to play 36. Fairly busy out there on Saturday - busier than I've ever seen it, but the pace of play was excellent, even without any sort of marshal on staff. My only critique is one which I don't foresee being addressed any time soon, and that is cart paths which are best avoided for safety reasons. In fact, we ventured out to Ingleside because even after a rainy week we KNEW it could not be cart path only. Two months after knee replacement, I wasn't ready to do a lot of walking yet. TIP: #9 and #12, both dogleg lefts and two of the longest par fours, are just about unreachable for me in regulation without a tail wind of some power. But if you play the fairways to your left off the tee, you can cut the corner and 30-50 yards to the green, to say nothing of avoiding "your" fairway which is tough to get a level lie on. When we see that opposing fairway is open, we throw our tee shots out there. Don't be timid about it, though. You do need to get the ball out there well enough left to avoid getting blocked by the same trees which form the dogleg.

I appreciate a golf course that is well taken care of but why not let people know when it's being done?
