I grew up with Aunt Bill's Brown Candy. Most Okies did. Its odd name both cracks up AND confounds most folks from elsewhere. (It sounds like some hairy, pre-op transsexual donned an apron back in the Roaring Twenties, had one too many Alice B. Toklas brownies, and then decided to mix up some brown sugar confection in the kitchen, doesn't it? Actually, no one knows exactly where the name comes from, but suffice it to say that it involves OKC's famous socialite turned folksy newspaper cook and chronicler, Aunt Susan. But I won't bore you with the actual facts. Keep imagine that stoned, hirsute pre-op tranny in a flapper's frock if it makes you happy.) Anyway, anecdotes aside, juorget the silly name. TRY THE FREAKIN' CANDY. Want some idea of what to expect upon your first bite? Well, just imagine a brown sugar praline, but soft like penuche. Crumbly at the edges? Sometimes. Usually much softer than that, but never sticky nor hard. Not quite fudge. Not quite a praline. Slightly salty, but almost painfully sweet at the same time. VERY rich. Butter GALORE. Got it? Yup, NOW you have the picture. It takes much time and considerable practice to obtain the perfect batch of Aunt Bill's Brown Candy, and (like most of us) I find that I seldom if ever have the time (nor the inclination) to stand over the stovetop and whip up a mess of the stuff. It's not cheap here at Woody's, no, but it is -- hands down -- the very best. No Christmas season goes by without my dropping a wad of cash on this delectable stuff, and I used to crave Aunt Bill's when I lived abroad. (Daddy used to send me a tin full of it, and it ALWAYS came either from my late grandmother's kitchen else Woody's.) I'm writing this review because I just ran out of the key lime coated almonds... and I'm needing a fix. Yes, I'm an addict. I don't tell my husband when I go here... I hide the candy from him. Yes, I'm a bad person. But when you try anything from here, you will not want to share. I first heard about Woody Candy Co. over the holidays in the life and style section of The Oklahoman. They make Aunt Bill's Brown Candy, peanut brittle, chocolate peanut clusters, English toffee (milk and dark), traditional ribbon candy, all kinds of fudges, luscious confections like lemon ice or black-bottom peppermint ice and gourmet chocolates that include melt-in-your-mouth truffles, candy coated almonds and key lime candies...chocolate covered blue berries.. and I know I'm forgetting something. They are located off NW 70 and Western, kind of in an alley and they are not always open. But if you call, they will let you know when they are. The retail shop is located at the same building that houses Woody kitchens and candy-making equipment, the savory aroma of nut meats roasting or fudge cooking fills the shop... heaven. Everything is hand made, delicious, and full of love... and probably a million calories... but who cares. This is an up scale shop and they do candy very well. Their version of a turtle (giant pecans coated in creamy caramel and a dollop of chocolate run about $25 for 1 pound box. But it is so worth it, and if you hide them... they may last a bit longer. I'm advocating that you not share the candy form Woody's, but bring them here to buy their own. read more

Hidden treasure in OKC I didn't find out about this place until a few weeks ago, but it's been in OKC for years. Stopped by and picked up candy for Christmas and it was a hit.
