Last Black Friday I stumbled in here to learn that they have an amazing spend $100 get $100 to spend in 2023. I went in today to utilize my coupons only to find out they expired at the end of October. Apparently there was a misunderstanding on the specifics of the program and I'm sure part of that was my fault. They could have just said the coupons were expired and moved on but they met me in the middle and allowed them to be worth half which seems fair to me. Cutest spice shop on Western Ave! Every year, celebrating their birthday, they have a pie contest! The judges judge the pies, but the general public get to come in and taste all of the pies for free! There are three categories: sweet, savory, and youth entries. Some of the savory pies were my favorites including the BBQ pulled pork shepherds pie! This is such a wonderful little shop! My wife and I have been coming here for years to stock up on hard to find spices for our dishes. No more obligatory spice missions while on vacation just to ensure my stock of Hungarian paprika doesn't dwindle too low. Thanks, Savory Spice Shop! I checked it out the other day while looking for any decent excuse to put the top down and cruise around the sunny city. You sort of waft in, like a cartoon cat smelling something irresistible, and are promptly greeted. I soon understood why it smelled so spicetacular- you're encouraged to put a little bit of any spice you'd like to try into your palm for an real sniff (a great idea for so many reasons, not the least of which is to keep noses out of jars). When you're finished sniffing, toss the spice on the ground, or if it's a salt, might I suggest over the shoulder. Western Ave is a perfect spot for this shop, a stone's throw from the fine foodstuffs corridor that is Western Ave from Forward to Whole; close enough to the growing Gourmet Ghetto along 23rd and the specialty grocers of our Asian district. Whoever scouted this location did a great job, and way to go on a beautiful new building here. And while Savory Spice is technically a franchise with shops in ten states or so, I met the owner, a nice gentleman originally from the Enid area (I believe). Locally-owned high quality franchises, especially where it fills a void for us home cooking dabblers, I wholeheartedly welcome! In that sense, it reminds me a lot of Big Sky Bread, another locally-owned franchise. Just as Big Sky addressed the growing demand for artisan breads, I imagine Savory will be a regular and welcome errand for many of us. read more

They have spice. The spice is nice. If needed, ask the employees for advice. They will entice. With all of that spice. (Dang it, now I'm repeating myself) It's great on... Rice? (Eh...) They're also quite nice. (The people, not the spice. Although the spice is also quite nice. As previously mentioned) This should suffice. But let's talk about price. Okay I'm out of rhymes. So the prices are not terribly unreasonable. I wouldn't qualify anything in the store as being "cheap" per se. A number of basic spices/seasonings are overpriced as all get-out, but the specialty blends are not exorbitant. The ability to taste/snort the spices/seasonings prior to purchase is a nice touch to ensure that you won't leave with something you wouldn't enjoy eating/snorting. Disclaimer: I shouldn't have to add this clarification, but... You shouldn't snort the spices/seasonings. They have some great deals included with their gift sets. I don't know if it's included in all of them though. For example, the Oklahoma gift set (including 8 bottles of Oklahoma-ish spices) included a coupon to get $5 off our next purchase of $10 of spice and/or stuff. That's nifty. Oh right: verify that the prices are accurate before you swipe. For example, the aforementioned Oklahoma gift set rang up as $40-something after tax, although the chalkboard showed that it was $33 (or $35 after tax). Excellent customer service is excellent, and she corrected it when I pointed it out. But still, worth paying attention to. No Keep It Local OK accepted, although they do accept the other one. One of the co-owners, Able, is one of the friendliest, most laid-back people I have encountered. He is always so kind & helpful. He goes out of his way to make sure each customer is taken care of. I can't say enough amazing things about Savory Spice Shop! I've been coming here for years & love the variety of spices & cooking herbs to choose from. They've grown their selection over the years & you're always going to find something new to try. Some of my favorite staples that I always keep on hand are Red Rocks Hickory Smoke Seasoning, Homestead Seasoning and Bakers Spice. If I had to choose one spice to cook with for the rest of my life it would definitely be the Red Rocks. It really goes great on everything (especially steaks!) Aside from the great variety, the shop employees are always so kind & welcoming. I've never had a bad experience & I'm always encouraged to try something new, which is refreshing to me. I came into Savory Spice with 2 things in mind. Able greeted me and I told him what I was looking for. The first thing was steak spice. He let me smell/taste 5 different spices, it was a tough choice between the coffee, cayenne and Hudson for me, but I got the Hudson. I must say, I used the spice last night and it made the best steak I've ever had, so delicious and flavorful! The spice was already packaged in a container for around $5, but you can choose several different sizes. The second thing I was looking for was a pumpkin spice for some specialty cookies I make. Pretty sure I've died and gone to spice heaven. Upon walking in, you feel like you're in a Penzey's store. This place is warm, charming, and makes you want to round up your friends for a grillin sesh. We spent about an hour in here just roaming round, sampling, dreaming, and reminiscing about recipes we've made that were hits at parties! I picked up a plethora of goodies including Chocolate Orange Mug Cake, Green Goddess Dressimg mix, Toasty Tomato Bisque mix, and a Golden Milk Chai Latte mix (looking forward to cooler weather to make these!!- YUM) the ladies Calee and Kathy (#SpiceGirls) killed it at helping up find new spices that were similar to Penzey's (ie., Capital Hill is similar to Foxpoint if you're into it like I am and put that stuff on everything). I love to cook and I've lived in OKC for years and I have NO IDEA how I have not been here before today. I even buy all my spices in bulk, what the heck! I think intimidation. My anxiety sometimes talks me out of trying new places. Glad I didn't listen! This is a spice lovers DREAM. So many hard to find spices. There are testers so you can smell/taste every single spice. Ever smelled the difference in cinnamons? Me either. Until now. And it was glorious. You can buy pre-made glass jars of spices, or purchase refills in bulk. Doing the latter gets you $1.05 off. They also have a rewards card that tracks $ spent at at $100 you get $10. I picked up Harissa spice, Za'atar, jerk and Mexican oregano, and celery salt. I've got my eye on a few other blends and cinnamon. Side note, I was told they only ground about 5lbs of cinnamon at a time and let it run out before they order more, because once ground cinnamon loses its volatility (the oils that make it pack a punch) so quickly. So they keep the freshest of fresh spices. They also have a billion different types of cocoa, AND things to make your own condiments, like Worcestershire powder. Gonna need to google what to do with that one for sure! I probably wouldn't refill my everyday, most used spice here because they are pretty expensive for just the basic compared to say, Sprouts. I'm talking like garlic or chili powder etc. stuff I go through quickly. And my only other complaint would be the quantity in which you have to buy. There's a minimum on every spice. And I understand that. But for the adventurous cook like myself who might only need a teaspoon of something for a new recipe I don't know if I'll like, having to purchase a full ounce is a little bit of a bummer. Also, I've been to a savory spice in another state. I've never looked into it, but wondering if this is a locally owned franchise? Oh I just googled. It is. Found a recipe for Japanese fried chicken which required shichimi togarashi which I thought I'd have to shop on line. I was wrong. I called was told they had it in stock. Meanwhile, I am signed up for emails from Savory Spice and they were having a 30% off of gift sets and most of the spices are new to me in the sets, but most of them are sugar free and low salt so score. Piri Piri was new to me, but the owner recommended many things I could try it on as well as how he uses it. Spices can be scary, especially if you have no clue what and how to use it, but here you get knowledable people who want you to enjoy and use spices in your life.
