Ok it has been a few months since I had Mike and his fantastic crew here to move to me seems like a ton of small rocks and put in like a French drain on the side of the house. ....cut off a few sprinklers, add some plants and put down two huge pallets of grass. Mike and his stone and landscaping crews made my formerly weedy, ugly hillside into a terraced garden with native plants and a timer-controlled drip watering system. The first part of the job was excavating many weeds and rocks and bringing in good soil. Mike listened to exactly what we wanted, gave me lots of options on plants, then he picked them out and put them in. His background in art/design and software are a great advantage to those of us who need help with all of these items.The crew also put in drip irrigation for my existing rose beds. Finally, they did some not so glamorous, but needed work by adding River Rock and pavers to one side of the house. They did this in about three weeks. Good grief! This guy is clearly in need of a secretary or at least a receptionist. I emailed (and left a voice mail) on April 5, asking for a bid on some major yardwork. He finally responded on April 14, with this: "Hello Am available to meet this week, let me know if you are available" Didn't sign his name, didn't mention why it took him ten days to respond. Not even a period at the end of his short sentence. Do we want to hire someone like that? Hardly. Exactly the right choice for trimming all the trees in my yard, Oak, Spruce, Crepe Myrtle - from a 70 ft tall to a small easy tree... Mike and his team climbed up and trimmed, thinned, and did an artful job. Mike was super knowledgeable about ants that infested one of the trees and had a plan for trimming and sealing branches. Highly recommend Mike and his crew, they were super efficient, worked hard, consistent and got the job done. They know what they are doing, and really love the trees. This review is based entirely on the shoddy treatment we received when trying to get a quote. We'd used Woody's in the past and had been happy with their work. We need some trash trees removed so called them. It took 4 days for our call to be returned. He suggested an 8am appointment which he did not make. He texted shortly before 8am to say he would be late, so we rescheduled for that same day at 5:30. It is now 6:40, he's not responding and we're done. We adjusted our day to accommodate him and he's stood us up. That's crummy customer service. read more

I have a large landscape project to get done this year, and after reading reviews here on Yelp, I requested information from various well rated services. I heard back from Mike about three days after my first email, in which my telephone number was very clearly listed.. in his response, he asked when I was available, and I responded.. Then, after two weeks of not hearing back, I wrote him back, wondering what happened.. Here is his response: "Sorry about taking a while. Its not that I have so many jobs but so many emails clutter my inbox this got lost in the mix. Its just me and a small crew and wish we would be a bit more organized. Sorry about that! mike" So, if you're getting ready to drop 10K or more on a big project, is this really the guy you want in charge? Not me.. I am looking for a professional company that communicates with me, from start to finish. Really.. is that too much too ask? How bad was our yard? It was so bad that when Mike's guys stripped it down to bare dirt, we started getting compliments. Based on our yard, you'd think we aren't picky. But it turns out we are. We wanted to move sprinklers, recontour the yard for run-off, aerate and amend the soil, etc.. Mike and his guys dealt with all of it and without telling us off. Let's talk about service. These guys work it. I forget how many yards of soil we brought in. 10? Then there were the amendments. And sod. Get this - we didn't have quite enough sod to finish the back yard, so Mike's guys took all of the trimmed pieces and pieced them together. And they rooted! Additional perks: Mike gave us some tamales that one of his guys makes. They could start a side business. Oh - and we got a rose. But we're cool. So we can't say if everyone will get these perks. Anyway, our yard is done and it looks amazing. We are no longer the creepy house on the street. We haven't gotten any compliments recently but that's because our neighbors are speechless. read more

Very happy with Mike and his teams work! We had lots of yard projects in the front and back to be done in short order before a big event we were hosting. Mike really took his time to listen to our wants and needs as well as make logical suggestions that made sense for our yard and stayed within our budget. Our front and back yards were all barren earth and weeds when we hired Mike last spring. While shopping around for a landscaping contractor, we got a professional-looking quote with drawings and pictures from a large company. Mike, our other contender, quoted a much lower price with an informal e-mail and a hand drawing on a piece of paper torn out of a notebook, but what ultimately "sold" us was that he had a much more interesting idea about jazzing-up our front yard than the other bidder. Fast forward a few weeks, Mike and his crew did a lot of heavy-lifting (moving earth, cleaning up old trees, tilling, fixing the fence, putting in new sod, building a retaining wall, etc.). In the middle of it all, we realized that we needed a sprinkler system, and Mike referred us to another small company he works with. Those guys were great - fast, diligent, and also gave us a good price. All in all, we wound up with great results for a very reasonable price, plus Mike and his crew were wonderful to work with. Only once we got to a point when a few finishing touches were left, Mike got busy with his other clients (hey, I am not the only one gushing about him on Yelp), so we didn't see him for weeks on end, then he would suddenly reappear for a couple of hours... We were so close to being done and yet we weren't! The very final piece of work sat there unfinished into the dead of summer, so I finally called someone else to come in and wrap it up. It was all done in a few hours after the guy showed up. This is the only reason for my 4-star (and not a 5-star) rating. I am an impatient person, so waiting for this last finishing touch was hard for me. Overall, if you are looking for a sleek, professional company that will give you computer-generated drawings, communicate with you regularly by e-mail, and follow a strict timeline, Mike is probably not your guy. If you are comfortable with more informal arrangements and can put up with the ebbs and flows that every small business experiences - you will definitely get your money's worth and then some. read more

This is the first time I've ever used a professional landscaping service and I honestly can say I really lucked out finding Woody's. Unlike several places I tried calling for a bid Mike was one of the first to call back, come assess the project and give me an honest quote. When he came out to scope out my yard he really knew his stuff as far what trees and shrubs should go and which ones needed trimming. He even tested out the irrigation system. On top of this he was very friendly, professional and honest. He wasn't the cheapest bid but I got the best vibe from him and his knowledge of landscaping. Within days he and his crew were at my place and they got right to work. Overall they did a fantastic job making my yard go from looking like Jurassic Park to a normal backyard. All of his workers were efficient, detail oriented and diligent...especially in 100 degree weather. When they were finished I seriously did not have one minor complaint about anything. They even cleaned up the place nicely when leaving. Overall for the quality and promptness of their work the price I got was more than reasonable. I hired Mike to clear out a yard that was literally reclaimed by nature after decades of neglect. I wish I had the before pictures. You couldn't see the backyard at all from the back porch. I'm so glad I found Woody's on Yelp. Before I hired them, our courtyard was basically a pile of dirt with overgrown weeds and bushes. The courtyard was not attractive, not a liveable space, and was in our entryway which was an eyesore. When I contacted Mike, he responded right away and set up an appointment. He called me when he was on the way to our house and met us within 15 minutes of our scheduled appointment. He took his time to listen to what we were interested in doing with our courtyard and then gave us some great ideas. You could tell he had a passion for his company and really cares about what he does. We decided to hire him right away. We let him take creative freedom because he obviously knew what he was doing, knew what would look good and also knew how to accommodate our needs. Within one week, he totally revamped our courtyard into a beautiful living space. They excavated the plants, bushes and small trees, built a beautiful stone garden and paved the rest of the courtyard with paver stones and gravel. He set up a timed irrigation system in the garden and even tied it into the planters they put in, so we don't ever have to water our plants manually (this was important because we don't know how to keep plants alive). I hired Mike and the Woody's crew to remove a dead pecan tree. The tree was really big, 40+ feet tall, at least two feet in diameter at the trunk and with branches hanging over parts of three different properties and several structures. Definitely a high risk job. Mike came in with the winning bid, a very doable price for us given that we had had no time to save up in anticipation of this job. Now, anybody who knows me knows that I have a reputation for being... let's say "thrifty." In other words: I don't like to spend more money than I have to. It would probably really surprise people then to know that I paid an extra 20% voluntarily on the original bid to show my appreciation for the work this crew did. To understand this you'll probably need to hire these guys yourself, but I'll try to explain. I began this process with few illusions about contractors. If you've owned a home for any length of time then you know what I mean. Some contractors don't show up, or they show up late, or they disappear before the job is done. Some contractors will lie to your face. Some contractors will scare your family. Some contractors use their opening bid to get in the door and then insist on renegotiating the contract once you are under deadline. I experienced or heard tell of several examples of all of the above. That's just home ownership, you figure. What I quickly learned from working with Mike and his crew is that it doesn't have to be this way. I always knew exactly what the status of the project was and I could always get a quick and courteous reply from Mike, almost always within minutes. He did exactly what he said he would do, and a bit more besides. The members of his crew were extremely polite and unintrusive, which counted for a lot with my wife. When not working on the tree, they'd do other things that needed doing around the house without additional cost "just to keep busy." That's the level of service Mike takes pride in, and well he should. But for me the most impressive part of all came at the end. Now, I don't think Mike will mind me suggesting that just maybe he underbid a little. Pricing a tree removal is as much art as science and, let's face it, looking up at a tree and putting a guaranteed price on pulling it down and carting it away is tough. He shared his original estimate of the man hours needed and I know that this job eventually went beyond what he had planned. With my cynicism about the average run of contractors I was just waiting for what I assumed would be an unpleasant conversation about how I needed to pay more, probably strategically timed to occur when I had a mountain of tree debris in my yard. Well, you probably know where I'm going with this: that conversation never occurred. A HANDSHAKE AGREEMENT WITH MIKE IS WORTH MORE THAN ANY WRITTEN CONTRACT I'VE HAD WITH ANYONE ELSE. I respect a fellow like that an awful lot and when I recalled the times I'd paid contractors more than their work was worth just to get them out of my hair I decided then and there that Mike was getting a bonus on completion. Not because he asked for it, and not because he had me over the barrelhead, but rather because he earned it and, frankly, because I want more people like Mike to be successful in a tough business. So if you stuck it out and read this whole review, you either have two much time on your hands or you need a good person to do something you can't get to yourself. Mike and his crew cleaned up a dangerous old tree for me that was lurking over the street. We determined that it was on its way out, and they came and cleaned it right up, and made sure to spray the cuts to seal them. They also took out a giant bush in front of my entrance, and now the entire property looks much cleaner and inviting. Mike is the best to work with! He's knowledgeable, conscientious, and knows his trees. He texts throughout the day so he's reachable if something comes up. His services include hauling the wood away so you don't have to worry about it. He also calls ahead if he's going to be late, so that you can plan your day accordingly. With a background in art, he's got an eye for design, too. Woody's takes checks and cash, and they're based out of South Austin. I haven't used Woody's services for landscaping but am seriously considering doing something with the giant patch of dirt in front of the entrance now. Maybe a half circle of paving or flowers? He quoted both and helped me understand what I could do within the budget I came up. We'll see! I would definitely be a repeat customer. read more

Hooray for Yelp! This is the best way to find the right people to hire and places to go. I had no clue how to find someone to remove a tree. It had grown super fast over the past year (a la Jack's beanstalk) and was making me nervous. I came here and noticed Woody's 5 star rating so I checked out their website. I like that the content was written by the owner and not some marketing company. I also like that he lists their favorite taco places. I don't eat tacos, but it was nice to see them supporting other local businesses. You really get a sense of what they're about as people and there's something nice about that. Old-fashioned in a good way. I emailed. Mike got right back to me and came out to do the estimate. He offered to do the work the same day, but I wasn't feeling well so I scheduled it for the following morning. Though they were very close to where I was inside, I didn't hear a thing - and when it was done, you would never have known a tree was ever there. Huge improvement. Mike is friendly, polite and very professional. They got the work done quickly and for a fair price, and I don't have to worry about that scary tree anymore! I now have an eye on the nefarious bushes out front. I've been putting off removing them myself because of the heat, but I might just call Woody's again instead. I contacted a couple of contractors before going with Mike (its hard to argue with a 5 star rating on Yelp!). My girlfriend and I had several ideas for our backyard. When Mike came for the estimate, he was able to mold and shape our ideas to our budget with no hassle. He was professional, courteous and on time. While the were tilling the backyard, the cable wire got cut (which wasnt their fault because it was supposed to be buried in conduit). Regardless, Mike got on the phone and had it repaired within 2 hours. Excellent service. He is always quick to return emails and answers any questions Ive ever had in good time. For me, Mike did the most important things someone in his profession can do.... 1) He showed up and did the work. He started the job quickly, when he said he would. 2) He did the work he said he would do, and stuck by his bid. He didn't beg off stuff that was harder than he thought, or try to charge more. 3) He answered emails and responded to phone calls, and was a really pleasant person to work with. 90% of people I have worked with do not do these things, but Mike really does care about doing a good job. Mike was referred to me from a friend, and we hired him to remove two big dead sycamores - both of them pretty close to our house. He and his crew did a great job! He got the permits from the city for us, and took both trees down and trimmed the other two trees as well. All in one day! He even bumped up our job to get the trees down before a windy coldfront blew in - that's attention and caring about your clients. Not only did they clean up all the debris, they also mulched our shrubs just to be nice! We were so happy with him that we hired him to plant some new trees. Love that Mike. When you talk to him, he'll strike you as this ultra-mellow Jack Johnson type, but don't let that fool you. He's serious about his work -- and the work is good. We needed a tree cut down in our backyard, and when his estimate was less than what I was expecting, I hired him, and he did the job on the spot, throwing in cleaning out our gutters as a freebie. He came back a different day to grind the stump, and as luck would have it, it was the day of the freak 1-inch snowstorm, but Mike called to let us know that the ice would keep him inside, then called later when things melted to tell us he was coming anyway. Every quote we received was outrageously high and we couldn't stomach paying that much for the work we needed. Mike is the nicest guy ever. Although he was slightly more expensive than the other top rated tree removal company, he showed up for my appointment (got stood up by the other guy). In addition, he was super friendly and seems passionate about landscaping. Our builder liked him so much he hired him for additional work on our lot! I would recommend him to anyone. Every contractor is Austin right now is very busy. Give him a break and call him back if you don't hear back the first time. Mike is a cool dude. The only complaints I see on this site are about returning calls, not about his actual work. He could benefit from an "office manager" to schedule his work and make sure every customer is called back, but at least he doesn't make promises or commitments he and his crew can't keep. I made an appointment with Mike for a quote for some tree removal and a hardscape project. The night before the appointment I emailed Mike to let him know that I no longer needed the tree quote. Well, I guess that didn't sit well. I received an email 30 minutes before the scheduled arrival time asking me if I was serious about the hardscape project and requesting my phone number. I replied to his email and listed my cell number. Then I waited, and waited and waited. No call, nothing. If you aren't going to show, at least let the client know so that they're not wasting their time. I see from other posts that I am not the first client to experience this. Next time I'll read the negative reviews as well as the positive before making appointments. read more

Well, Once again Mike shows up to look at yard, says he'll get an estimate, then drops all contacts. You can email or call him & if he decides he doesn't want to do your lawn, he'll just ignore you. He may do great work when he finally commits, but beware for the possible blow off. I came on Yelp and created an account specifically for post. Hey Mike, here's some advice - Just say you're too busy to do the projects you don't want to do, instead of pretending to be eager to get started, & then ignore everyone. Update: Response to the Reply by Mike on 9/17/2014: That's a lame attempt to make your lack of customer service seem like it's my fault by using "..maybe it in your junk mail..". That's ridiculous. This review is based soley on customer service or the lack thereof. No work was done. I called over a week ago and left a message explaining I needed an estimate on a retaining wall. A week passed with no call from Mike. Giving the benefit of the doubt, I called Mike again this morning and he answered. Explained I had called previously and asked if he got my message. He said he had returned quite a few calls yesterday....(but not mine) Mike said he could come out this afternoon around 2:00 and I asked that he call me either way. By 3:30 no call from Mike and I called only to leave another message. I called again at 4:00, and he answered. I asked if he had tried to call. He said he hadn't! and seemed to vaguely remember me..."oh, you live in South Austin, right?" I waited around for nothing and will take my business elsewhere. read more
