Okay yelp, you removed my review because you said it wasn't clear that my previous review was from a first hand experience. This review IS from my experience. That means I sat in the barbers chair and had a haircut here. Is that clear enough for you Yelp? I am detailing what happened not complaining about a business practice. I came here a long time ago as a customer. The place seemed cool but it turned out to be a really bad experience. The main barber Don was nice at first and we joked around but he turned out not to be so cool. I made a small joke something like "if I don't look good, you'll have to explain it to my girlfriend " again, it was clearly a joke. The guy, Don, goes off on how he would explain it by F'ing my girlfriend and that if she didn't like it, he would keep F'ing her until she did. He basically continued on with this for 5 mins. Even the barber next us told him to chill out. There ya, go. Don, was proud of his sexual assault tirade. I would've left but he had already started cutting my hair. Also, the other guy, the Hispanic dude, complains about having to use scissors. There are a few other reviews that mention that. Be a freaking barber and do your job. Barbers use scissors. I have been going to this barber shop since 2001. This spot is perfect. All of the guys that work there are just great people to talk with. My haircut + tip is around $20. These guys have been cutting hair for years along the drag of UT campus. The setup is great how they have a LCD playing movies through the day. Also got to love barbers that enjoy sports just as much as you do. All haircuts come with warm shaving cream + neck shave. Now each barber cuts hair their own style, but if you are direct to say how long you want your hair cut, they all have a great turnout. You could not ask for a better group of barbers. You can park on Guadalupe or find parking meter in West campus. They also are open on Saturdays till noon. The place can have long wait times if a lot of people are already there, so plan your time accordingly. I seriously will never go anywhere else to get a haircut. read more

During my cut the barbers talked about the "eye candy" that walks past their shop and how hot one of their customers girlfriends were. 0 stars for the culture, 4 stars for the cut. This kills me, I really liked this place. But Don just insulted me and my family. As I sat down for my noon appointment, he asked what my weekend plans were. I said it was my cousins one year wedding party, to celebrate with more people since last year they had a small 10 person covid wedding. Don says "Well if they're the type of people who feel cheated about a small wedding during a pandemic, they'll never be happy with each other". I said "Look I really don't appreciate you saying something like that about my cousin". He declined to apologize and said "Opinions are like a**holes, everybodys got one". I told him I was leaving, apologized for wasting his time, and left. He never said sorry or anything. I wrote all this down, within a minute after I left the shop. It is as close to word for word as I can make it. This was not normal barber shop ribbing. It was a mean and personal thing to say, and he didn't take it back. Please don't take my word for it. This has been my barbershop since the summer of 2008, and I couldn't imagine getting a haircut anywhere else. I've had a cut from every barber in the shop, and each one is a master of their craft. I would called Grant "my" barber, but if I needed a cut in a pinch and he was out, Don, Ralph, Doug, or James could absolutely do the job. Parking is the only downside (being located near a University campus makes things a bit difficult), but it's usually not too hard to find a spot. If you're looking for a no BS barbershop with reasonable prices for a haircut and/or shave, give Wooten Barbershop a try. read more

This place is just disgusting. As a freshman at UT living on campus without a car, haircut options are pretty limited, especially if your hair grows fast like mine. So naturally I've got to get it done and I choose basically the only place within walking distance of my dorm - The Wooten Barber Shop. The first time I go, I get a cut with Grant (the guy nearest the window). Seems like a nice guy, I tell him pretty precise amounts to cut (1 inch of back, 2 inch from bottom of ears, at the eyebrows in the front). He asks me if I want it thinned out - I say no, no thinning. As he cuts my hair and I gaze out the window as I am not facing the mirror, my hair gets destroyed. Thinned out all over and cut far more than my specifications asked for. Great. I pay him the $18 and a tip to not be a jerk and leave. The time comes for another haircut and I decide to give the Wooten another chance. This time I get Don (guy in middle with long beard). I give him the same specifications as I gave Grant the previous time. My hair is not thinned again and the cut comes out ok. I pay the charge and give him a tip. Then I get back to my dorm and look in the mirror where I can actually take a real look. Oh my goodness. What did this man do to me? Somehow this guy cut my hair unevenly on the sides (I couldn't tell in the barber shop b/c of how he combed it and it was wet). My sides were off by at least 2 inches. How can a barber with over 20 years experience do this? It just simply amazes me at this level of incompetence. So now I'm out another $20 when I had to go get my hair fixed after what he did to it. This place is no good and I strongly recommend everyone avoids. Especially the weird massages! read more

Since my job changed and I wasn't close to my old stylist I (foolishly) tried Wooten's a second, and last, time. I tried them last year (2010) when changing stylists and didn't think much of it; the price was avg to high (for just a cut) and the 20-second should "massage" was just goofy and annoying. WTH? This time, I tried again and remembered just why I hadn't come back before. No matter what you tell the barber, you get the haircut they feel like giving. Not only did they cut too much off, and leave it lopsided, but they took way too long for the bad job they did. Very uneven haircuts, depending on who you get. The guy who looks like Lurch will give you a haircut just like his, no matter what you ask for. Do you want to look like Lurch? The Barber at the far end once slashed my neck with a straight razor and didn't say anything about it. I got back to my office and realized my collar was covered in blood. Spent an entire haircut listening to these guys speculate as to what type of farm machinery or weapon would butcher the greatest number of migrants at the border. I would give them six stars if I could. I was told to expect a little wait because the place was so popular. But they had a big screen tv with The Hangover playing, so I was more than content to chill. Got a shave and it was awesome. Cisco used trimmers to get the worst off, then a safety razor, THEN the straight razor. Along with numerous hot towels and lather. I've been here twice in the past 15 years, since ownership changed. In the past it was a great barber shop, as long as you didn't get a haircut from the guy next to the window, who pulled your hair. These guys are disrespectful and rude. Expect old men talking about pornography, pulling your hair, and dropping combs on your face. They love to talk about how a single edge razor is as good as a multi-track one, hoping to draw you into a sizeable discussion. Come here if you don't mind a few thankless barbers, and can appreciate the nice view of the sidewalk. If you have to do it I'd try the Hispanic guy at the end; he seemed like he was trying to make the best of it. After my Birds debacle I needed to get my hair up to snuff. Wooten Barbershop was close, and it was relatively cheap ($15). The wait was about 20 minutes on a Thursday at 9:30, so imagine in the middle of the day it could get pretty bad. The chairs were cozy, the magazine selection varied, and the t.v. had the hangover playing at the part where Mr. Chow was jumping around naked dealing justice with a crow bar. Not too shabby to pass the time. My barber, Don, could see that I had an "interesting" hair cut and set away to mold my hair into a perfect business hair cut. He was fast, but not too fast. Just right. I was slightly nervous about the neck shave, only because I fear giant blades scraping against my head, but it was a wonderful touch to an already great hair cut. read more

This has been my barber shop of choice for several years now. I discovered it when I was a student at UT due to its prime campus location. The same guys have been working there ever since I started going and they all have their own way of cutting your hair. Here's the basic service you get for $15: 1. Walk in, grab one of the gentleman's magazines and have a seat while you wait your turn. There's always a movie someone downloaded off the internet playing on the TVs in there too. This part is very important because if you come in at the wrong time of day, you could be in for a LONG wait. The barbers tend to take their time with each and every customer so prepare yourself based on the number of people sitting when you walk in. 2. When the next available barber is available and its your turn you sit down and describe what you're interested in them doing. Each barber has their own style of cutting. For example, Ralph is a master of the electric clippers while Don seems to prefer these giant 16" long scissors. All the guys there are extremely friendly and make you feel right at home. 3. Once your cut is finished, your payment includes a neck shave with warm shaving cream and a straight razor as well as a 1-2 minute back massage with some weird electric vibration thingy. The barber cutting my hair once got on a 10 minute phone call during the backrub part of my haircut. Needless to say, i felt pretty loosened up the rest of the day. 4. Pay the man and be on your way! Important notes: ---One of the best things about this barber shop is its location, right on the drag. This means that you as well as the barber shop staff get to see all the folks walking down the drag. This has led to some interesting conversations in my time here over the years. ---Don't be in a hurry. Your time at "The Woo" shouldn't be rushed... you're surrounded by folks who know how to take it easy, being in a hurry can ruin the experience. I like this place mainly because of the atmosphere and the campus location. I can't say I've ever gotten a bad haircut here, but it's definitely an "old-timey' barbershop if there ever was one. read more

I had pushed off getting a haircut for a couple weeks because I was unsatisfied with my last barber and since I moved out here recently I didn't have much to go off of. I had a friend recommend I come here and it was nice being able to just pop in after a night of drinking and sleeping over a friends. They only do drop ins from my understanding and no appointments so I lucked out being the only customer at that moment. Just got a normal cut on the sides no fade so that was easy, but the way they cut the top of my hair was how I usually get it so I'm satisfied with my haircut. It's not the best cut on the top but definitely better than what I got my first time around. Wish I could speak on getting a fade but just being unsure about the quality of haircuts here I figured I'd play it safe. It's $21 base for a haircut so not too expensive either, the barber I got was pretty chatty so take that however you like it. Generally recommend them but if you're trying to get the best haircut possible I'd look somewhere else. If you want an easily accessible cut because of how close they are to campus and a haircut that's pretty good I'd go here. read more

I actually got a fairly good haircut quite fast and for a not unreasonable price. My barber was a friendly dude. We talked about mowing the lawn so its absolutely perfect, and what the weathers like this time of year where I grew up near the Canadian border (this is relevant for later.) Then as I was paying and about to leave, one of the guys cutting hair literally across the shop from me heard a snatch of the conversation I was having with my barber as I waited for the receipt to print where I again referenced having grown up in New York State. I really didn't say anything more offensive than that, it was an entirely benign little bit of mindless small talk. He looked up over his absurd nest of miniature american flags and trucker caps and proceeded to harangue me *loudly* about being a "yankee" for a weirdly long time as I tried to edge towards the door and leave the conversation. First time in my life I'd ever talked to the guy, I don't even know his name, but regardless, he'd decided he really, really doesn't like me. The entire rest of the barbershop was silent this whole time. He was talking loudly enough that I could hear him continuing to say by now openly hostile shit about me to a silent room as I was standing outside checking my texts after I finally escaped. One of the more surreal experiences I've had in a while. Like damn dude I just wanted a haircut. read more

It's less hair cut and more man cut. I've never had a place that was "my barbershop" but damn this place is good. Its a small place with a lot of personality. First of all, the 4 or 5 barbers that make up the place are all old and come from a different background but super cool dudes. I've gotten haircuts from all of them and its one of the most diverse places I've ever been to. Its so hard to explain, but its all about their attitude, style, demeanor, ect. They usually have a "pre-released" movie playing and its such a friendly atmosphere. After 1 cut, I felt like the guy doing the cutting was family. This is the best place I've ever gotten a hair cut. If you ever have the option or want someplace super reliable, this is your place. read more

I've been a customer of Wooten Barber Shop since 2002! This is the ultimate men's haircut establishment! James, Don, Ralph and Cisco are the regulars with Grant filling in when someone is on vacation or just needs a day off. These guys are all very different in personality and upbringing, but are joined in their love of beautiful college girls, pirated movies and keeping the men of Austin looking good! This place is great in that you get a haircut as you choose, a straight razor edge up (hot shaving cream too!) and then it culminates with a brief shoulder massage via a vibrating device they strap to their hands. Of course in true barber shop fashion, they also offer up a full-on straight razor shaving session. I am not a particularly bearded fellow, so I have not partaken in these services. The prices may be a little bit more than say a SuperCuts but less than competitors like Birds Barbershop. After years and years of coming here, I have no desire to go elsewhere. Love this place. Old world meets new. The barbers here are skilled, professional, and full of whit. The wait is a tad long, usually 20 minutes, unless you get there first thing in the morning. There's a solid selection of magazines, adult and otherwise, and the flat-screen is always showing a good flick. I've been going here for four years and every time I try out another shop I find myself disappointed. My favorite barber knows me by name, knows my cut, and serves it up right every time. Walked in at 11:30 today, and they had 3 barbers going. I only had to wait a few minutes. $15 plus tip got me a haircut, straight-razor shave around the ears and neck (hot lather! yeah!), and a vibrating shoulder massage. This is a real men's barber shop, one of the few left. Only complaint is parking, but I planned some errands and eating in the area, so didn't mind $3 for Dobie garage parking. Street parking is possible but rare. Plan on cruising for a while or just use the Dobie. read more

The people at Wooten Barber Shop makes you feel at home. My haircut took thirty minutes. This, however, does not show incompetence. In fact, it is the exact opposite. The cut I wanted required skill with the scissors, and they proved very competent. It was also the most relaxing thirty minutes I have ever spent at a barber shop. Don't you hate those awkward silences you always stumble upon in a barber shop or salon? It won't happen here, that's for sure. Not the worst hair cut I have ever had but, certainly not that great. I always get a simple short and messy, something I can leave down or put into a faux-hawk when I want. The problem was that even though I brought in a picture of me with the hair cut I wanted from just a few month ago they messed it up. It was far too short and slightly lopsided. All I could do was let it grow out and get it redone. But if you are just a guys guy and don't give too much though to your hair, this would be a good place, the warm shave was great and it was nice to watch some TV while waiting. I got my hair cut by Ralph, and I am furious. I provided a picture of what I wanted my haircut to look like; he said he "knew the look" and that it wouldn't be a problem. It wasn't a complicated haircut, so it shouldn't have been. When he told me it was done, my hair was twice as short as I asked for it and not even close to the style I showed him. It had none of the layering and depth of the example I provided. I thought maaaybe it was just that he hadn't gelled or styled it yet, so I asked him (since he didn't do it on his own) if he could gel it like the picture I showed him. He looked annoyed and told me to "do it myself." He actually said that! I don't know if this guy was just having a bad day or what, but I would have been better off not getting my hair cut at all than going here! read more

I went to the shop today was disrespected from the start. As I walked in a heavyset gentlemen wearing glasses told me to take a seat, no hello or acknowledgement. I mentioned that I spoke with someone on the phone, which I believed was him and he continued to deny speaking with me--fine. Although I deliberately told him that I wanted a 4 clip on the sides I saw him cutting my hair without a guard. Finally, I told him that I wanted my hair cut a certain way on the top. He suggested that another approach would be better. I told him that I had tried that before and wasn't really interested. He continued to insist how I should have MY hair cut. When I finally told him that it wasn't an option, he pulled the apron off of me and told me 'You're out of here'. I've never seen a barber mad because I didn't want MY hair cut the way HE wanted. If you have a certain way you like your hair cut STAY AWAY! If you like to play russian-roulette with your hair then this is the place for you. read more

I have never felt the need to actually review an establishment if I did not like my experience or service. I would just avoid the place or come back or try a different barber, but today is different. I'll start off by saying everyone's haircut experience is different and some people have higher standards for a haircut than others. Some people just want to be in and out of the door asap and have some significant changes while others want a sharp and precise cut. If you're looking for a simple haircut this the place for you-- they get the job done. If you are looking for a specific haircut that takes some skill avoid this place. I came in wanting a fade blended into a short combover. I was specific with Ralph on the directions. A one on the bottom of the back faded into a two and then into the combover. Trim it, but keep it enough for a combover. It didnt really seem like he listened to what I asked of him, but he sorta repeated back half of what I said. He was doing an okay job on the sides of my hair and then started cutting the top. I asked if he could do scissors on the top and then he looked at me and said why. I told him I like them and then he said it's the same thing.. I frankly told him I prefer it thinking I dont need to defend myself since its my hair and I wanted a combover not a buzz.. He sprayed (a lot..) of water on me then and cut a lot off the top. He then did a (very) quick shave on the back and ears and finished with the massage. Overall he was very curt and showed no care or passion and took less than 20 minutes on my hair. If you really care about how your hair looks after you leave the shop, look past the fluff (bootlegged movies, 30 second massage, and a mediocre shave) and avoid this place. Old-school barber shop? Just some old folks cutting hair to be honest. There are plenty of other real barbershops that cut with care and talent around the area, just go look elsewhere. I question Ralphs desire and passion to cut hair.Maybe I'll try another barber at Wooten one day, but for now back to my bathroom. read more

I went backpacking in Europe and received a terrible haircut. I went to the Wooten, for the first time in my life I might add, and Don ran his hands through my hair and said "what were you doing in Europe?". If that doesn't confirm that he really is a master barber, then I don't know what does. This barber shop makes you feel like a real man. It is an expirence that always results in a great haircut. The wait can be long so don't go if your in a hurry, but there is a lot to keep you busy while you wait. read more
