One of the lifeguards constantly crossed personal boundaries and eventually called me an alcoholic because I did not accept his unsolicited medical advice. The aquatics director and CEO made me stand in his office despite me telling the CEO that I cannot stand or sit for an extended period due to chronic pain and my disability, and while making me stand and listen to him repeat everything he said over email, they both basically took the side of the lifeguard, suggesting without asking the offensive party that the lifeguard was "joking" and I was more or less holding a grudge. They even suggested that the Bayside pool wasn't the right pool for me because I was offended by being called an alcoholic by this lifeguard. They never asked the lifeguard to apologize to me after I requested an apology. I do not feel respected at this YMCA branch. Another issue is the staff don't tell you that there's an additional annual fee on top of the regular monthly fee and joiner's fee until after you've joined. I reached out to the same CEO and membership director about this issue, and have been met with silence for over a month. But when they didn't like that I complained about a lifeguard slandering me and his continued foul mannerisms towards me, the CEO wouldn't leave me alone constantly emailing me and demanding I go into his office when I asked for a phone call to accommodate my disability to address the issue.

Their family membership is an excellent value when you take into consideration the complementary child care. Their pool and locker facilities were recently renovated and are very nice. The YMCA offers a wide variety of classes, and although the selection might not be as robust as other facilities, I have enjoyed them. The cardio/weights room, where I spend a lot of time has been updated with brand new equipment and is well managed - there are typically available cardio machines in the busy morning hours. This Y is also located next to the East Bay Bike Path - so one can easily bike here, and go out running during or after a visit. Bottom line a good value, a good facility for the area.

Having been a…read morequasi gym rat and runner for 10 years or so, I damaged a tendon in my hip and have not been able to run anymore. I had basically given up on excersizing and become quite dumpy. I decided to try the Y near my home in hopes I could at least do something to get back/stay in shape. I joined for a one month trial to see if it would work and I seem to be ok. I am slowly getting back into cardio with the recumbent bike and may try the eliptical. Anyways, enough about my dreary blog. This place is big, bright and airy (no gym stink). Floor to ceiling windows looking out to pine woods. Many pieces of cardio and Nautilus style equip with 7 tvs to watch (using earbuds). A 3 story rock wall, bbal court inside and outdoor, walking trails, skate park, free weights. The locker room is small for the size of the place, but its clean and well maintained. Showers are individual even for men which is new to me (thank God if you saw me!). There is also an indoor pool, youth area and even a Phys Therapy room run by Southcoast hosp. Too many programs to list, but I am happy with the basics. The members seem nice and polite for the most part, dutifully disinfecting their equip if they so much as looked at it. The only complaint I had was I had two morons yakking on there cell phones while on bikes next to me! Is there anyplace safe anymore? One clown was sipping his Dunkins and talking....I was waiting for the cigarette to come out or a breast feeding infant.

I wanted to provide an update regarding the current state of the YMCA, as there have been some…read moresignificant improvements since my most recent review. I mostly worked with Lu, who was responsive and approachable throughout my efforts to raise earlier concerns. He made himself available, listened to my concerns, and was transparent about how issues were being addressed. While some of these problems took considerable time to resolve, I do believe his efforts have been crucial to the overall improvement in conditions at the Gleason YMCA. Starting in the spring and summer of 2026, I noticed a significant improvement in the cleanliness of the men's locker room. The steam room and sauna now appear to be regularly sanitized, and the unpleasant odor that was previously present is no longer an issue most of the time. The locker room floor also seems to be much cleaner, with the floors being swept regularly and empty bottles and other trash being removed each night. The bench in the steam room has also been replaced. The gym floor in the workout center is being cleaned and swept by staff throughout the day as well. The mold has been minimized and there are no longer drain flies. The lack of airflow in the mens locker room is still very apparent, and it is consistently an uncomfortably hot and humid environment throughout the year in addition to stagnant odors. Throughout the summer, new equipment and machines have been installed, replacing older equipment that was no longer in good working order. There are also brand-new mats in the indoor track area, replacing the older mats that had fallen into disrepair. These are some significant upgrades that should improve the overall quality of everyone's workouts in the weight room. That said, the membership price for a single person is still fairly high at $62 per month, which is something prospective members should take into consideration. Overall, while there are still areas where the YMCA could improve, I think it is important to acknowledge the substantial progress that has been made since my previous review. The Gleason Y is in noticeably better condition than it was before, and I appreciate the staff's efforts to address the concerns that have been raised.

He's also friendly and funny yet always keeps me on my game. He knows what he's doing and he's constantly paying attention to proper form and to how to up the ante on my strength goals. I've also started getting deep tissue massages with Jay Moran for a long-term shoulder issue that was impeding my strength training. Again, Jay is professional and kind and has helped me gain increased mobility in just a few weeks. I don't know the other trainers as well, but the ones I've seen around the gym are always nice and seem to love what they do. Body Soul is the BOMB!

What I do know is that it feels good when I move my body in a healthy way. And there is no better place to do that than at Body Soul Personal Training. Eddie Fleury has been my Body Soul personal trainer since February, and it helps to have someone in my corner. I wasn't sure I'd like having a personal trainer. It seemed like a luxury, and I often wondered if I could afford it, if I was worth it, or if I'd see any progress. Today I can say without a doubt that this is the best gift I could have given to myself. I have developed an incredible rapport and trust with Eddie. We work as a team. Each session, Eddie gently adds something new to increase the duration or intensity. So gradually I am building upon what I did the week before. He calls them "progressions." The empirical data show that I have lost weight, inches and body fat; I have gained strength, endurance and flexibility. What is critical, however, is that I have gained more confidence, which cannot be measured with scales and charts. My skin is glowing, my clothes fit better, I am standing taller and I am setting a good example for my family. I am at peace with my body, my age, my abilities, my strengths and my life. I recently moved across the country and had been doing F45 for several years, so I reached out to see if I could come in for a trial class. This was the communication I had with them. As you'll see, I had to follow up, and then, when I genuinely forgot about the class that day, no one reached out to check in or follow up afterward. They still haven't. It's disappointing because I would have benefited from attending the class and becoming part of the community. In all likelihood, they would have gained a long-term member who showed up consistently and was excited to be there. I understand that things get busy, and I'm not expecting special treatment. But as someone new to the area who was actively trying to find a new fitness community, the lack of follow-up left a poor impression.
