Bootcamp is just a term for group, morning, directed exercise. Let's break it down. 1. Most days, it's 4-8 of us doing workouts together. There's probably a dozen regulars in the early timeslot, men and women, and college to 60s ages. It's a friendly group, but not chatty, which is just right for me. Nobody's trying to be a looker or show-off, we're all there for health. 2. Our workouts always make it worthwhile to get out of bed. A lot of my friends are astonished at my morning workouts, but after work means relaxation (or more coding) for me. I roll out of bed at 6:10 for the 6:30 session, and because it's become a habit, I don't even think about it. It's helped me stick with the program over many months. I have more energy during the day, my evenings are free, and I drink less beer in preparation. Bernal has clean, still air in the AM, great views, and doesn't small like gym disinfectant. 3. Coach Elaine is encouraging and patient while directing classes. She tells you what to do, often in different ways depending on your skill / energy level. I used to lift weights and do treadmill in college vanity years, but frankly, the broad range of activity I get at WOTH has led to a body which feels considerably more healthy overall. Even though she's consistently upbeat and energetic, Elaine isn't a cheerleader -- she's good at sensing the pulse of the class, pushing us, and recognizing accomplishment -- but she's never frivolous or vapidly perky (you know what I mean). She's studied anatomy and movement a great deal and understands my body better than I do. So she tells me what to do, I do it, and I get stronger every week. Looking for something new or simply need a kick in the butt, then you might like this. I am an athletic person. Run everyday, spin class 2x a week, combined with rock climbing and racing motorcycles. You get the picture. I've been doing this for at least 10 years and like to interject something new into my workout. Workout On the Hill helps me with that. I am outside at the break of dawn, while the rest of the world is still asleep. We spend about an hour on core exercises which is definitely my weak spot. I love to work out but am not diligent enough to spend a hour doing core. This is perfect supplement to my routine. New owner, Coach Elaine is good (never met Charlotte). Her style is warm, honest and motivating. She truly is focused on helping people achieve their goals and offers different exercises depending on fitness level. Sessions are in 4 week and 6 week increments, plus there are men and women in the group. If 6am is too early for you, she has a 9am session too. Check it out! read more

I also just survived Workout on the Hill with Carey Rockland at 6:15am in Holly Park and it was AWESOME! I was hesitant about the enjoyment I would get out of getting up so early in the morning to exercise, but it was so much better than I expected. Workout on the Hill has an added format on Tuesday and Thursdays that includes a circuit training structure. The variety of the exercise is so much fun. I've only ever experienced circuit training at a gym where the instructor pushes you to uncomfortable limits, but Carey is different. She challenges you to work hard, but comes from a place of encouragement and care. If you like variety in your workout, try this class! Just the equipment alone is cool. Sandbags, ab rollers, heavy ropes, TRX bands, cones, jump ropes and heavy medicine balls. Workout on the Hill is now offered Monday - Friday. Hope to see you there! read more

I joined WOTH with my baby and it was the best thing I did postpartum for my body! I learned so much from Elaine about fitness and what I did with my posture and carrying the baby that caused my neck pain to get worse. It was great to work out in the fresh air and sunshine and we got so much personal attention. Elaine is super upbeat, works you at just your level, and is sweet and fun with the babies! I have been doing Workout on the Hill off and on for almost 3 years. I keep coming back because it works. I love the fact that I can just show up and let Coach Charlotte tell me what to do. It's only an hour long but not a minute is wasted. The heart rate stays up, the muscles stay busy and the calories get burned. Charlotte creates a positive environment that is adaptable for everyone. I'm a 3-year veteran of this program. It gets me up and going in the morning in a way my various indoor gym memberships never did. Coach Elaine Williams creates a dynamic and enjoyable 45-minute choreography using weights, TRX, stretch bands from her bin and employing the rails, steps, fences and play structures of Holly Park. Great to be a grown-up back in a playground! Elaine focuses on correct form and technique so you get maximum value from each exercise and don't injure yourself. I was searching for a gym nearby as I am recovering from a massively broken ankle and had lost self-motivation at a crucial time. I don't like gyms, but they are a useful resource at times. I needed something to get me moving past simple use of the foot again, to being able to run and jump and play once more. I found Coach Charlotte here on yelp, and was impressed with the idea of working outdoors and having a set time that would push me to actually go. To be honest, I didn't believe I would stick to it, as I've never been much for group exercise. I liked Charlotte from day one. So I signed on and to my surprise I have just completed the 6 week session, missing only one of the 3 day per week workouts. I can't say enough good things about the group. Charlotte has a good sense of each person's limits and abilities and pushes everyone to work at their full potential, while keeping it fun. My personal goal was to be able to run again by the end, and she helped me get there before I even realized it. I must update my review of Workout on the Hill, because things just keep getting better! The addition of Carey and Ross as trainers has been fantastic. I thoroughly enjoy their unique training styles, each day is different so there is no way I can get bored! I thought my friend was crazy when she told me she worked out at 6 am three days a week outside rain or shine. With small kids and a demanding job I was having a hard time finding time to exercise so I gave it a try. 3 years later I am still going and cannot imagine going back inside of a gym. Owner Kristina is a fabulous coach with a great combo of knowledge, motivation and kindness. Dogs and kids are welcome too which has been great when you are trying to manage a busy morning. Her pricing is very reasonable and there is plenty of individual attention during the session. She makes the workout adjustable to any level of fitness and adapts exercises for injuries when needed. I go out of my way to join Charlotte and her workout on the hill. I have lost weight, gained muscle, lost fat, and actually look forward to exercise - especially the "it" being over part. Her team includes deconditioned and conditioned fitness levels and she changes what we do every day - incorporating the park in ways that are innovative and effective. I reviewed WOH on Yelp back in 2011. Here it is 2017, and I'm still going faithfully, 3 times a week, rain or shine! Coach Kristina and her assistant coaches are knowledgeable, organized, attentive, extremely reliable, able to provide alternative exercises or modifications to meet individual needs, and offer a great workout. I really like the diverse group of people who come, motivated but not maniacal. Being outside as the sun comes up is my favorite part of the day. On Mondays we meet on Bernal Hill, which is spectacular, a great change of pace, and feels like a mini adventure, so the cardio is actually fun. Let me preface this by saying that I have never written a yelp review before, and sort of planned to lurk in the shadows forever. But I believe in this enough to put an end to my days of yelp anonymity. The first thing Elaine, who is wonderful, did with me when I signed up for my first class at Workout on the Hill was have a 45 min phone conversation with me. Who takes that kind of time? In my experience, only really special people, so I had a good feeling about this (not something I generally have when it comes to exercise). We talked about my goals for the workouts, and I told her about past injuries I had dealt with (crucial, since I am a musician and I need my body pain-free in order to make my living). I would not describe myself as athletic. As far as the whole running, jumping, climbing thing goes, I am average on a good day. I have sort of surrendered myself to living in a body that will always struggle with this. But for the first time I feel strong in my body. I am able to push myself harder, even if it is still a struggle. No two workouts are the same, which keeps it interesting, and ensures that no muscle group is neglected. I didn't know how many muscle groups I had until I was sore in all of them. Elaine is incredibly knowledgeable about how the body works, and sets up the class so that there is a great balance between pushing yourself and setting yourself up to be able to sustain physical activity over a long life. Plus, it is outside. No stinky gym. Fresh air, gorgeous views, friendly folks. Rain or shine, it was good to be there. Taking these classes has even motivated me to exercise away from them. More than that, it has made me excited to continue working out, which, in all sincerity, is nothing short of a minor miracle. I am now running 10Ks (and feeling good, what?). People who know me well secretly suspect I have been possessed. Reading over this, I feel it is maybe a little mushy. My abs, however, are less so than the they used to be. read more

LOVE Workout on the Hill. If you are trying to get your butt in gear (or in shape), to jazz up your workout routine, or even if you're just starting out (as I am) this is a great way to do it. It is so wonderful to be outside, in this beautiful scenic spot in the morning, breathing the fresh air, and getting your body moving. The coaches are terrific. It's better than a classic "boot camp" routine - a little more varied and personal than that. We do lots of different stuff, so it never gets boring. Often we'll use various parts of the park or the neighborhood for different routines. I also like that you can take it at your own pace. They make the workout vigorous and challening enough for the fittest among us, but the rest of us who are newer to working out are encouraged to go at our own pace. The 8 a.m. class is nice and small, and it's really like getting a private training session for the price of a class! It's friendly, fun, and good for you. Come try it out. read more

Charlotte rocks! She is the first person to turn me on to exercise! I was always relatively fit when I was younger (forced to do ballet for years and lots of hilly bike rides as a kid) but not liking exercise and not being a natural athlete has taken its toll and I lost most of my acquired muscle tone and was distinctly wobbly in all areas! I had been trying for a year or so to lose weight and get fit, I belonged to a gym and tried to go to classes etc but nothing was working and I just wasn't motivated enough. I saw a flyer for workout on the hill and persuaded a friend to give it a go with me! Its been nearly a year and I have attended more workouts in that year then I probably have in my life! I love the fact we work outside, its a fab way to start the day, reflect, clear your mind, get your blood pumping. I love the fact that I can lift weights, circuit train, do pressups, run and all the other things she gets us doing. I was always intimidated by all these things but Charlotte makes her class acessible to everyone and I quickly got over my shyness and just started enjoying getting stronger and fitter! I have muscles where I thought I'd never see them again and can see that I may one day get rid of my belly fat!! The classes are made up of people of all levels of fitness which is great, because you focus less on everyone else and more on just feeling better about yourself and enjoying the wind on your face! I doubt I will go back to a gym while Charlotte is around motivating us on the hill! Also she does a 6.15am class and a 9am class which is great for those who work office hours or for people (like me) who aren't so good at getting out of bed super early! Plus the 9am class is always less busy which is nice! I can't recommend this class enough, you will workout, laugh, sweat and leave with a motivational thought or philosphy to mull over during the day, while feeling enlivened and enjoying all those endorphins (or whatever they are) zipping around your system!! She also does personal training which I will definitely be adding onto my schedule when I have more playtime money! read more

As a former intercollegiate athlete I am always searching for fitness programs that are both challenging and fulfilling. I do Workout on the Hill, but I've also done personal training with Elaine. I can't recommend either highly enough. Elaine knows the human body extremely well. Unlike other coaches/trainers, she WANTS you to communicate with her so she knows exactly where you are and how your body's doing. She's extremely attentive to both ensure you're doing the exercises correctly to avoid injury and to make the most of everything. It's really invigorating and fun to be outside in the mornings. Workout on the Hill is really efficient and you get a total body workout every time, although each class has a focus. Mondays are more cardio-oriented, Wednesdays work your arms and legs, and Fridays are more for core. But you'll finish every workout just feeling worked in a really great way. As others have noted, it's not the kind of "bootcamp" that people dive into sporadically. It happens to be in the morning, outdoors and with an awesome coach -- and those tend to be labeled as bootcamps. Bottom line -- it's awesome, Coach Elaine customizes each exercise for your fitness level, and it'll be the best 45 minutes of your day! read more

I hate to exercise. And Charlotte gets me to do it anyway. I've been with her for over a year now, and I'm so much stronger and in way better shape than when I started. I love Workout on the Hill!! What a great, thoughtful, fun fitness class. Holly Park is gorgeous. It's a perfect way to start the day. WOH is tough, but not ridiculous in a Marine Boot Camp style; Elaine gives you several variations for every exercise, so if you need more of a challenge or need to take it a little slower, you can get the workout that fits whatever level you're at. I've definitely noticed a change in my strength since I've been participating, especially in my core. It's a great group of people, and a nice mix of men and women, young and old. read more

Joining Workout on the Hill has been the best thing I've done for myself in years. Attending on a regular basis serves as the most effective (and healthy) prescription to reduce daily work + life stress. Coach Elaine is an supreme enthusiastic motivator who mixes up the sessions to keep us all interested and focused on different core areas for improvement whether it's cardio, weight training or basic stretches. Elaine provides different skill levels for each exercise, so anyone can participate and feel challenged. After nearly a year of regular attendance, my fitness levels have taken a giant leap -- increasing my strength, flexibility, endurance and the ability to easily hoist my carry-on luggage into the overhead rack without making any grunting noises. Another huge selling point --- it doesn't take place in a sweaty overcrowded gym, but underneath the eucalyptus trees in Bernal Heights' lovely Holly Park. Some mornings the biggest incentive for me to roll out of bed and head to the park is the reward of watching the sunrise while doing jumping jacks with a bunch of like-minded folks from the neighborhood. I love this workout! It's not been easy for me to rise early for a 6:15 am class (they have an 8:00 too). But I kid you not, I'm actually looking forward to it! The workouts are challenging, and far more varied and comprehensive than I could ever come up with on my own. I used to run (A LOT) but never felt fully conditioned. This change in regimen is fantastic because it's so complete. The coaches have a warm, encouraging style. In my view, that's what you need to stick with it for the long haul and enjoy it. read more
