I went in for a simple men's hair cut: taper the sides and back, trim the top, blend it nicely to go with a simple modern combover look. This chick was so inexperienced she had no idea how to trim or shape the top so she just left it alone. The left side of my head was cut significantly higher than the right side and was uneven in length. After the hair cut my head came up to a mushroom point at the top. Went back the following day to get a cut from someone who supposedly had 26 years of experience, and she barely did anything the fix it. Now my hair looks extremely top heavy and does not blend well on the sides with the look I was going for. Showed them both the same picture, they both failed to produce the correct result. Finding a good place to get a hair cut is difficult enough, I'm just going to wait until I go back home to SoCal before getting a hair cut. If there's one major regret I have it was ever giving that first imbecile a tip. NOT RECOMMENDED!!! read more

I'm really spoiled by a friend who does hair, and since college has taken me a long way from him I've been searching Berkeley for a decent replacement. World Cuts does the job, and the price-to-quality ratio is probably the best I've found in Berkeley. I dont' see any reason for less than five stars because this place is great for what it is. My stylist (I don't know her name, sorry) was easy to communicate with - like another reviewer said, she was able to take minimal instruction and run with it. In my first year of college, I came here wanting an A-line haircut. I brought in a side view, back view and front view (so honestly, it's pretty hard to mess it up). What I got was 6 inches of my hair cut off and mushroom hair right under my ears. I've never had hair above my jaw line prior to this experience. I was so horrified. Year and a half later, my hair has finally grown out to a middle length. I will NEVER get my hair cut there ever again. I had my hair cut here last week. The lady who cut my hair owns the place and she was exceptionally nice. I gave her minimal instructions and she was able to just run with it, which is the way I like it. I left very pleased with the cut. The place was nice and clean and the decor represents what you would expect form an inexpensive shop in a college town. The price was $15 which I think is about as low as it gets for a skilled cut in a clean store. I will definitely be going back. read more

After seeing the reviews for local hair salons, I decided to give this place a try, as it was well within walking distance. Walking in initially, I was a little worried. The place smelled a bit like tobacco, and it was a bit dingy in general. However, I was immediately greeted by whom I presume was the owner, and she was extremely friendly. Within 5 minutes I was seated with Marilou and I asked for a few inches off as well as a v-cut in the back. It took a little longer than I'd expected, especially considering I didn't do a wash or dry, but I was fairly pleased with the end product. Marilou did an amazing job blending the layers she put in, and keeping everything even. It was less tapered than I would have liked it (more of a "u" than a "v" shape), and the length was shorter than I'd expecred, but it looked nice nonetheless. It only cost $18.00, which was awesome considering I usually pay $50.00+ for a regular haircut at my usual salon, and I ended up tipping because the staff were so friendly and professional. read more

Called in the morning to ask for an appt and was told to come back at 1pm. Really sweet and cheerful on the phone. The hairdresser was friendly enough, and did what I wanted - thinned, trimmed, and layered. It was a pretty standard and I was initially happy with the results. But, upon further examination, I realized that she made really straight cuts at the bottom - sort of like a 2nd grader's bowl cut. And my new bangs look super awk because it was cut straight across and stick out like crazy. The right side looks fine though... I think it's a great deal for guys though! So...I got the opposite of everything I asked to. I too came to this place because of it's high rated reviews... First off - I asked for layers. I got straight hair. I asked for it to be trimmed off 2-3 inches. I got my hair cut at least 5-6 inches. I asked for a the V-shape layer fall down...I didn't get that. I got straight...hair with a LITTLE bit of layers. I wanted to keep my length and my long hair...I have helluh SHORT hair now. I wanted layers...so that my hair style is thinner at the end...but it's helluh thick. I wanted my bangs fixed up, the lady said that my hair can't do it because it doesn't flow that way & I'm like oh uhm...I'm sure it can...I was able to do my bangs like that before...& then she CHOPPED IT. So now I look like some asian nerd with a bob haircut with longer hair. (I showed her a picture of what I wanted...and she glanced at it really quick and was like yeah yeah....) I wanted fringe side swiped bangs...and I got straight bob cut bangs... It was a total of $16. It was $18 & I used a -$4 coupon = $14 & I gave $2 for tip. I decided to give tip because the lady was nice as hell. She kept talking to me. She was super friendly. She was very careful with cutting my hair & she spent quite some time chopping it off..."nicely". So. I mean...she didn't give me an ugly haircut. I don't look ugly with what I got. But I didn't get what I want. Which is why the rating is so low. Was looking for an affordable place to get my hair cut in Berkeley that was near the Units. I looked around and finally decided on World Cuts. I originally only wanted a slight trim on my hair and my bangs, but I had a spur of the moment decision to get a bit of color put on my ends (a subtle ombre). Marilou did an amazing job with helping me choose the color. She's also super nice, which is a great plus :) Overall I was really happy with my hair. The coloring was $75 and the cut was around $14 (I had a coupon). Honestly, I don't think I would have gotten a better end product even if I went to a higher-scale salon! I came here because it was close to campus and was in dire need of a haircut. The lady who cut my hair was really nice and I had nice conversation with her, as the other ladies as I observed them say hello to people passing by and talking to other customers. I liked how my hairdresser continually asked me what I wanted and provided suggestions throughout the process of cutting my hair. I wanted my hair to be thinned out because I thought that recently my hair was looking kind of poofy but she said that she didnt want to thin it out too much because she liked my thicker hair. Great, in a pinch. The staff is friendly, and they let me come in right before closing one time, and still gave me great attention. I'm not really one to get all fancy with specific cuts, and I'm kind of glad, because that means I'm free to get my hair cut pretty much anywhere. The cut I received was decent, but the ends didn't feel as clean - cut and soft as they do most times I get my hair cut, so I don't think that I would trust them with a complicated style. This is my absolute favorite place to get my hair cut. It doesn't have the trappings of an upscale, bourgie salon (for one they don't wash your hair first) but I don't need that stuff. What's more important to me is getting a good haircut, and this place has never disappointed me. They give me better haircuts for $18 than $50-$60 places. I've seen a different stylist every time and I always get an amazing cut. They've always been good about communicating with me about what I want and what they think would look good with my hair without pushing me into something don't want. I have very short hair (a bit longer than a pixie cut) and they always make it look cute and not longer than I want for the sake of, idk being feminine enough? But not more butch than I'm going for either. I've got pretty specific preferences and they always hit the mark, something I've had problems finding in the past. After going to Edge for my first four or five haircuts in Berkeley, I noticed some fairly major faults with my haircuts and starting going here instead based on Yelp reviews. The quality you get here is a lot better. All of the hairdressers pay good attention to detail and communicate well with you when figuring out what kind of haircut you want. As has already been mentioned here, Rynae, the manager, who has the chair closest to the door, is the most experienced of the three hairdressers, but they are all capable. Everyone is also nice and professional. At $15 for a men's haircut, there's really nothing to complain about here. Give it a shot if you're unsatisfied with your current haircuts. read more

I recently got another cut at this location, after their last visit proved to be my best haircutting experience in years. I had a different stylist this time, and unfortunately forgot to bring a photo of exactly the cut I wanted. So I ended up leaving the shop with a different style. But you know what? I look -great!- So no worries! None at all! The experience was, again, relaxing and pleasant, and my stylist was careful not to cut the dumb mole I have on my scalp, which I appreciate. I've rated this place 5 stars for the price. Clearly, if you go to a high-end salon, you might get a "more stylish" haircut, especially if the cut you desire is complicated. Walked in on Sunday, it was hugely busy. I thought for sure I was going to wait a LONG time so I was ready to get comfortable in the waiting area. No more than 5 minutes later, one of the ladies comes up to me and says she's ready...no kidding, good start for sure. Sophie was the one to give me the cut. I'm a dude so there's nothing incredibly exciting when it comes to cutting my hair but she was friendly, thankful, courteous, and did a good job with my hair. You know how sometimes you can leave a salon like wtf did I just get (or maybe it's just me)? Well that is absolutely not what happened in this case. For $12 (thanks to the other yelpers for pointing out the coupon!) I couldn't be happier. Rocking a great haircut and it's especially convenient for Berkeley students. My hair cutter was somehow not able to give me an even haircut. I have a pretty easy haircut: short but not buzzed on the sides and slightly longer on top. I was surprised at first when she asked me if the haircut was good as one side was visibly at least twice the length of the other in a few places, and I had to keep asking her to take off more in the longer places. After some time, it looked fine in the mirror and I stopped asking her to take more off but when I got home I realized it was still noticeably uneven. After over a week, it still hasn't grown out fully and one side is slightly longer if you look closely. The haircut was $17 and I've gotten much better haircuts for half that. read more

I haven't had my hair cut professionally in seven years; most of this time my hair was short and I had figured out how to cut it myself with some interesting first experiences. Anyway, now that my hair had actually grown out beyond my scope of expertise, I came here at the suggestion of my fiance. They can do it. They can cut my hair and his and have us in and out in about a half hour. It looks good, too! And affordable! I didn't get anything fancy, mostly cleaned up my tangled mass, but my head feels so much lighter and has a simple, nice shape. They took me in even though I showed up 10 minutes before closing. (I got out 45 minutes later because there was a line. I really appreciated it!) I've had a history of hair hardship. (hehe alliteration) I've had hair that was cut too short, lopsided a-lines.. you name it, I've had it. Up until now I've dealt with this problem by throwing money at it. For the past few years I've only gotten haircuts from places with the $$-$$$, cuz the more it costs the better it has to be...right??? RIGHT??! Nevertheless, my two roommates both LOVE world cuts, and instead of shelling out another $80 for a trim, I decided to make an appointment and drop by after class one day. I got one of the younger ladies who had cute hair and so I immediately felt at home. She made sure multiple times that she understood what I wanted (trim w/ long layers and long bangs) and would always double check before she made any cuts. LOVED this! The whole haircut took less that 30 min and I walked out feeling pretty ballin ESPECIALLY because the whole experience only cost me $14 + $2 tip and my head felt a good 2 lbs lighter. However, when I got home and really examined my hair, the cracks began to form. I noticed that the layers are REALLY choppy and I definitely did not ask for a shaggy look or anything like that. The layers don't blend well with each other, and they're just uneven all around. It looked vaguely like someone had gnawed on my hair! I guess the moral of the story is: you get what you pay for. My haircut is no where near terrible, but it really does lack the professionalism of the kind of haircuts from other, more pricey salons. I honestly thought there were few if any barber shops that could match Olive Drive Barber Shop in Davis. World Cuts is probably the closest one. I have a complaint and many, many compliments about the services and environment. The Good: Despite its popularity, having four workers really cuts down on the waiting time. I had Lan and not by request and she was a terrific hairdresser. I really adore her personality because she was such a warm and kind person. We discussed a variety of things (life, school and experiences) and when I busted out my Vietnamese, it certainly felt as if she waited for however long to exchange words with someone that spoke her native language. And perhaps it was because of that incident that caused her to really take her time. The atmosphere was pleasing. If you're looking for hair products and are in need of a haircut, there really isn't a better place to go to. And with the four dollar coupon, it made my stupendous experience that much more stupendous! After hearing about how she worked on an hourly wage, I decided to tip 25%, something I rarely do unless I truly felt that the experience was well-deserved. Frankly, she and everyone in there deserved more but as a student, that's all I could afford at the time. With the haircut, I was pleasantly pleased. I'm a simple person and didn't have too many instructions (e.g. "I'd like a trim"). Perhaps that's why it turned out a bit shorter than usual but that's okay. That right there was the only complaint I garnered throughout my half hour experience at World Cuts! read more

As most people said, the ladies are super nice and friendly. The woman who gave me a haircut was very good at small talk despite her English, and cut a bunch of my hair which was great because I have way too much hair. I showed her a picture of my old haircut, which probably helped. She knows how to handle Asian girl hair, for sure. The store itself is pretty shabby. The equipment was very low-level (I probably could supply a store like that, just a pair of scissors, water spray, and those things they use for guys) and overall... yeah. Shabby.
