This was my first time coming to World Cuts for a simple haircut. I told the barber exactly what I wanted, and I even showed her a good picture of myself I took after I got a haircut in my hometown. I have short, straight hair, and I didn't ask for anything fancy. Yet, she somehow messed it up horribly as if a 5 year old cut my hair. The people here are really nice, but when I came in for a haircut, I had the most painful experience yet. All I wanted was shorter hair, and I did get that. But, the razor that she used kept grabbing my hair and tugging on it. She noticed and tried to clean it, but said I had so much hair (which is true, but this has never happened to me). The barbers there are really nice, but I think the quality is a little lacking. I left feeling good but then my girlfriend found split ends and a couple long hairs that they missed. I would come back to get my hair cut and hopefully the razor doesn't tug on my hair again in the future. read more

I think these days everyone who needs a regular cut has had to try a new shop! I believe I had been to this particular shop a couple of times during my tenure as a student (or it could have been the one directly next door as I always get the two confused). I recently came back a couple of times as my regular spot La Petite Hair Salon around the corner has been closed. Rynae, the owner/operator/stylist is very nice and the wait time has always been minimal but the problem has been the haircut is quite "messy." I mean there was hair all over my shirt, pants, shoes, forehead, and even inside of my mask. I asked if she had anything to wipe the hair off my forehead but she only handed me a tissue (how about a damp towel or blow dryer?). I think I MIGHT go back but this could never be my regular shop! read more

Visit on 12-18-12. THANKS to Lan (correct spelling?) and the other nice ladies here, World Cuts may have turned into my all-time "go-to" spot for future haircuts-- I love this place. I had been here before and was alternating between here and another spot, but not anymore. Renee gave my toddler son his second haircut ever and I was pleased with her patience despite my son's squirming. I had been meaning to Yelp about it but held off for one last visit before Yelp-ing my 5 star approval. It's official! 5 Stars for sure. When done right, a great haircut can leave you feeling like a new man and this spot delivers. On my visit, I was in and out in about twenty minutes. Lan was my stylist and she worked her magic snipping away. Before long I felt like I was glowing with my new cut. Equally impressive is Lan's memory of my last visit over a year ago, wow she remembered some cool details. Finding a spot for a kid's haircut is not an easy task either. I had some time before I needed to go home, so I stopped in for a haircut. I wanted to chop off a lot of my long hair, so I asked for a shoulder haircut. The lady was a bit distracted because she was on the phone, on hold. So I guess she didn't make too much conversation with me. It was also one of the fastest haircuts I've ever had, and she had cut off a lot of hair as well. She was also a little bit rough with pulling my hair as well. It didn't feel like she was super attentive to the details. The haircut is pretty cheap though, like $16 or so not including tip. World Cuts. I was surprised and delighted to find out a fellow film and media studies major works here at World Cuts when she is not attending classes at Cal. We met when she was a co-facilitator in one of my Education 198 classes. And I was quite delighted to find out she is in my major at Cal. I ran into her on her way out of class as I was going in. I told her I would stop by for a haircut. Two weeks after said run-in on a hot sunny day, I patiently waited for about 20-25 minutes for her. I thought it would be much longer when I saw the names on the wait list. It seems some of the people on the list left. I was very happy when I was able to get in and sit in her chair. We were able to talk about film and media studies, post-graduate plans and studies, and other related topics under the sun. I was beyond delighted getting my hair cut with the help of my fellow Golden Bear aand her scissors. World Cuts is reasonably priced, similar competitive pricing as the brand hair salons. I am going to go back ASAP as it is approaching the four-week mark. I want the hair cut much shorter--into a total pixie cut. I read the other Yelp! reviews before coming here. This place ruined my hair. I walked in looking to get my look back. A few months before coming in, I had gone to another salon where I cut my hair at chin length. The stylist had cut my hair into two choppy layers so that by the time it had grown out a few inches it looked like a mullet. Unsatisfied, I went to World Cuts looking to restore some natural looking long layers. I explained the previous haircut disaster to the stylist, showed her pictures of it, told her how much I hated it, and explained and showed her pictures of the long layers I wanted. She said she knew exactly what to do and snipped away. By the time she was finished she had essentially given me the same horrific choppy haircut I had received before: two choppy layers sitting on my head. I was in shock and disbelief. I explained to her that I didn't like the layers and for her to fix it. Her response was "well, I can't keep cutting or you'll have a mullet!"... It didn't matter if she kept cutting, it was ALREADY a mullet. That's exactly what I told her I didn't want and yet it's exactly what she produced. I couldn't understand how after me showing her pictures of the previous type of layers I had and telling her that this was NOT what I wanted, she proceeded to cut my hair in those SAME layers. OH, I digress! The strangest part is that she only cut the right side of my head in the two choppy layers. The left side was cut almost exactly how I wanted it... I walked out and cried since I had spent the past five months growing out my hair and completely at a lack of confidence and now I'll have to spend the next six months the same way. read more

This place seems to have pretty mixed reviews, but I have yet to have a bad experience at World Cuts! For a $20 + tip haircut, this is about as good as it gets. I always request Rynae, who does a great job and is very good about listening to how much hair i want cut off (i.e. she doesn't get too scissor happy). Before dashing out for the holidays, I needed a very efficient haircut, and that was what I got! There were 3 ladies in the salon, so I got seated right away with Rynae. I just needed 2 inches off and it took her all of 20 minutes. The place is really, really close to campus. I think it's even closer to Sather Gate than the gym (RSF) is. As a grad student, I'm not picky with hairstyles, so this place does it for me. I can see why World Cuts is college-student friendly, with its affordability ($19 for a woman's cut) and location. However, I'm inclined to check out other hair salons around the area because there isn't anything unique to World Cuts that compels me to come back. read more

Pros: - Price. Easily the cheapest hair cut I've had since I was a kid. About 1/2 - 1/3 of all other places in Berkeley. Even more if you use a coupon - Quality. The haircut was great, just as good as the more expensive places - People. The people are very nice - Speedy. Wasn't busy at all, but I was also there over the summer as opposed to when school was in session so I can't speak to that Cons: - When cleaning up the neck line, they use an electric razer and can be a bit aggresive, it left a few marks and slightly stinging, but gone by the next day. I actually walked a bit out of my way here simply because of what I saw on Yelp. I was not disappointed. What did I like best about my experience? My haircutress (she didn't tell me her name and I foolishly didn't ask) was very diligent and meticulous with my hair (which is quite unusual for male hair) AND she talked to me. I almost always never get spoken to by the person cutting my hair. She asked me questions. We chatted about alleged 20k houses for sale in Florida. And thunderstorms. It was great. I hate how they always guilt trip me that I'm leaving SO soon (they even have a countdown to the number of haircuts I have left) and they're going to lose one of their biggest fans. World Cuts has been an active addition and force in my undergraduate career at CAL. These fiery women have seen me through it all. Mohawks, evens, side-burns, dye-jobs and now the business casual ... come over? (LOL). I come here once a month and they know the usual is never usual and it all changes and I really appreciate the respect they give me. They always ask personal stuff because I allow it and are always accommodating to no end. I don't even have to call because that's how awesome they are -- reservations, lol? You come in and you get quickly seated. Now they're open Sundays which would have been a HUGE life saver way back way. For guys this is the best place. I couldn't find a good place until 3-4 months into my first sem and when I found this place, it secured my problems for the years to come. I don't mind coming here once a month just for my haircut and I beyond a doubt publicize this place when people ask where I get my awesome haircuts from (it's good that I work so publicly and at multiple venues). I had both my shortest and worst haircut in recent memory at World Cuts recently. I was looking to get my haircut on Sunday, showed up at this place at opening time, and was out within 20 minutes and $20 poorer after tip. The woman that cut my hair moved at a blistering speed. She wasn't making conversation and was sweating quite profusely. I appreciated the pace, but when I got home I realized that I had received what was probably the sloppiest haircut of my adult life. Lots of weird spots where the clippers ended and the scissors began, and the scissors work was uneven in several spots. I blame myself partially for not catching this in the barber's seat. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A DECENT HAIRLINE OR TAPER/FADE CUT !!! I went here after looking up the reviews on yelp. My old barber was great but he charged too much and is located pretty far away from where I live. So I figured okay why not try this place, the prices are cheap and they are close. Worth a try right? ....wrong. Don't get me wrong the people in the store are very friendly, I must admit. Though I'm not sure they understand "black" people hair all too much. I went in just wanting to get my hair cut down a inch or so and then lined up. Not too difficult right? The lady there, without even asking how I want my hair, complete screws up my hairline making it look like an m instead of a straight line like this ________. To add to injury she gives me a buzz cut and makes me look like I enlisted in the army. So I have a f**ked up hairline, and I'm bald....great combination. Rynnae was great! I requested her after reading reviews, and I was not disappointed. She looked at a picture I brought and cut my hair (short!!!) perfectly. It was a bold move to go from long hair to above-the-shoulder and I was considering going to a more expensive salon to do it, but I'm happy I did it here. I also got my eyebrows waxed...the lady was friendly and I was overall pleased with the job, but the room they wax you in is realllly dingy and kind of unsettling (especially if you were getting your bikini wax done) and I wish she had spent more time on my eyebrows with a tweezer after. This place gave me the most stylish haircut I have ever had! I don't remember her name (sorry!) but she was in her 30s and had lightened hair. I've spent hundreds on my haircuts before, but never again. This place charged me like $15. I told her that I've always had a hard time finding a haircut that suite my face shape. I did panic a bit when she cut my hair shorter than shoulder length (I've always had long hair), but it fits my face so well. One day in my sophomore year of college I walked in there for my first Asian fauxhawk. It was one of the boldest moves I've made to my hair, and I got a lot of props from friends and ladies. Several people asked me where I got my cut. Then at some point I decided to try something new and bounced around a few different barbers... sort of experimenting, not ready to settle down. Years gone by, I'm living in SF, working 80 hours a week, and would never think I'd have gotten my latest cute from this place, where my relationship with Fauxhawk started. Then one day, I was back in Berkeley visiting my girlfriend, and it hit me that I needed a cut on the only off day I have in a while. Then I stumbled upon this place again, and the same nice Asian lady greeted me while cutting for this other dude. Long story short, I got a less crazy version of the Fauxhawk I rocked in college back then, and I've been getting the same love from people... My boss told me my cut looks great; friends dig it; and even the food delivery lady commented on it. Well, I guess I've decided to settle down. The only reason why I didn't give it a 5 star is that I felt a bit rushed when I tried to describe what I wanted and the rationale behind it, but then again it was super hectic (4 kids came in as soon as I sat down for my cut), and the young Asian lady might just be that good!
