That's understandable as of all the construction. Everyone had use arrivals lane and wait on the elevator almost 30 minutes to get to departure level.. I found the airline check in area organized and easy to navigate thru. Now TSA at this terminal is like a Abbot and Costello routine. They seem not be coordinated or can work as a unit. It's never a pre-check line always told is a staffing issue. After 10 years you think they have resolved how rotate or reassign staff based on flight demands. The bathrooms are the worse I have seen. Extremely small stall luggage barely fits. I saw no bidets that most international Asian and Middle East airports have even if domestic. The waiting gate area needs more power ports. They also need replace seating that's worn and peeling. If you want to have world class facilities and be the face of NY or even US they need to go look at Incheon ,Hong Kong,Dubai ,or Singapore as example of a quality and classy terminal. You are not charged for luggage cars, floors are spotless,waiting areas are not plan or blah, and decent shopping and food offerings.

There's also a whole mall in there to shop. I never buy anything but I like going to see the New York themed displays at the Lego Store. When flying out, arrive extra early because the TSA lines can get really long and move slowly. They also might suddenly change your departure gate, and it can be up to a 20 minute walk away from the original gate if you're unlucky.

However, I still had to go through immigrations, recheck my luggage and go through security again. I have Global Entry, Sky Priority and TSA Precheck so, the process was much shorter for me but the walk from my arrival gate to departure gate and everything in between was quite a lot with only 2 hours for a layover. Terminal 4 has nice restaurants and shops: The Palm if you want steak, Boqueria for tapas, Japanese spots if you want sushi, Mi Casa Cantina if you want Mexican food, Shake Shack if you want something really casual (a burger after being away from home for weeks always sounds good), Eataly if you want some pizza/ pasta - they also have prepacked sandwiches and fruit cups if you're in a hurry. They have nice lounges here too: Etihad, Emirates, Amex Centurion, Capital One, Chase Sapphire, Virgin Atlantic, Delta Sky, and Delta One. There's plenty to choose from if you have access (whether through credit card or airline). JFK is a massive airport. Lots of airlines means lots of flights which means lots of people which means delay and chaos. With a quick stop at Delta One Lounge, I managed to board my flight only slightly late.

It was completed in 1962 and open for business. The original head house (aka: terminal building), operated as a functioning terminal until 2001. The exterior of the building, along with the interior, of the head house were declared landmarks in 1994. Moreover, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Today it is part of the TWA hotel complex, but anyone can visit the flight center, lounges, gift shop, food court, and museum area. In addition to the original building, it has been partially surrounded by additional hotel buildings. Inside, the former terminal has been restored to its former glory. You can see the open three-level tall windows with amazing views of departing and arriving jets in the sunken lounge area. There are the tube-shaped, red-carpeted departure/arrival corridors that now lead to rooms in the hotel, but used to connect the gates. Now various places in the head house and flight center are museum-type displays for the former airline. It is a very interesting place for anyone to check out the displays and read about the history of TWA. Moreover, there are additional items to check out like the old cars and the huge Twister game. Whether you stay at the hotel or just need a few hours to kill on your layover...this is "something to do". Personal Note: I thoroughly enjoyed seeing everything in the flight center. It brought back so many wonderful memories. When I was a little girl, my family and I used to look forward to flying in and out of here back when my dad worked for the airlines. We loved this airport and mainly because of this terminal...it was fun and different. With the way they have restored it, it almost seems like I entered a time machine to another time. We did not get a chance to visit the lounge, we just went straight to our hotel after getting off the plane. Alaskan Airlines - A small plane, think Southwest size. Wifi available. 342 planes. 128 destinations. Service - Mostly online. From booking to paying, including our baggage payment and check-in. 24 hour online check-in for our flight. Price - We pay extra for direct flights. We pay extra to select our seats; our assigned seats cost as much as our plane tickets, lol. $550 for two. I had a longer layover so I visited another lounge in another terminal and left about 1.5 hours to get back through to T8 and my flight. From terminal to terminal was fast and easy, maybe 10 minutes. This is where the problems started. It was a Sunday evening and TSA was really short staffed. I had pre check and was at the front of the line but because they started routing other passengers through our line I waited 45 minutes just to get past security and almost missed my flight! Everyone was pretty nervous. There was a lack of management and leadership or care to get things resolved at the lines. Once you got to the screening areas it was a little faster but I had to run to my gate which wasn't that close. I don't know that I'd ever risk trying to go to another lounge like that again or if I did I'd try to leave a lot earlier and save myself the hassle of that stress.

Folks...when you are standing in a security line and you know you have to take off your shoes, belt, take things out of your pockets, etc. and take out electronics...why don't you just do it? Why wait on the TSA folks to tell you? They are doing the best they can by basically herding folks through there while thoroughly checking every bag and every person for our safety as a whole. This is not a game...help the process! For extra entertainment, two people in front of us took off their shoes just before the conveyor and then put their items on the conveyor and just walked away to go through the screening. Hello!...what about your crap? Their shoes became a tripping hazard for everyone behind them and finally got kicked out of the way. They didn't push forward their bags and personal items...what the heck? Then TSA is trying to figure out whose bags and shoes they belong to. They come back with the attitude that someone else should have taken care of it. Huh? Who?...Me?...My kid?...I don't think so! We don't touch other people's personal items. Just my opinion, but when you pull crap like this...I wish, I wish, I wish TSA would pull those folks aside and make them wait to re-enter the queue. I realize we all may forget things in the madness, but you can tell the difference between folks that forget and those that just expect someone else to do it for them. But wait, doesn't stop there...on the other side...they stood in front of the conveyor to take their do-da time putting things back in their bags while the trays are backing up...and they just stood there...why? Waiting on the dang shoes they left behind! Boo! They wouldn't move or get out of the way, not even with a polite "excuse me" to let other folks get their things, which makes you have to push through to get your belongings. UGH! A few TSA folks were overseeing things and I know they are busy watching, but a simple "move to the side" that takes a second or two could have moved things along quicker and would have been awesome to help fellow passengers. Aside from this...it's like a well-oiled machine. A bit of advice I have for every traveler is to talk to the TSA folks. They are doing a thankless job by choice to ensure the safety of all of us. It's an important job! A simple "hello" or "how are you?" goes a long way. I agree that in some places in the USA they could definitely be friendlier and often on a power trip, but this is not one of those places, or at least not on the day we went through. The folks here were friendly and just trying to get you where you are going or need to be.
