I consigned with National Book Auctions, affiliated with Worth, in October. My husband and I spent $900 to send 30+ boxes of books to NBA in New York from Colorado on behalf of my parents. I was told that my books would be dispersed throughout various auctions in the coming months and I would be notified when they were being offered. On November 2nd, while browsing NBA's upcoming online auction catalogue, my father discovered nearly his entire collection was being offered in the auction that was to take place on November 4th. We were never notified by anyone that any of our books were coming up for sale. Upon further inspection, we noticed that many of our more valuable books were being sold in huge lots of 30-40 much less valuable, nondescript, books, they were not identified as signed or as first editions etc. I voiced my concerns on November 2nd, two days before the auction, and stated that I wanted my items pulled; they were not pulled and were sold for $10, $20, and $40 per lot when some of these books were worth over $1,000 each. I believe that they are hiding valuable books in large, nondescript, seemingly invaluable lots, and then buying the lots for themselves for pennies on the dollar only to resell the valuable items through their other auction or online websites. I called the next morning, November 5th, and left a message stating that I wanted an itemized statement for all of my items ASAP. At this point, I also discovered that our remaining items had been sold two weeks prior to this auction, in October, without any notification of their being offered or having been sold. The contract I signed stated, "Worth will forward a settlement report and payment for my portion of the proceeds of this contract, to me within 30 (thirty) days following receipt and acceptance of all my property covered by this contract, by all high bidders." It has now been nearly three months since my items sold and I have not yet received an itemized statement nor the money owed to me. The CEO, and Galleries Manager initially gave me the runaround, telling me my consignment was being completed etc., now they have stopped returning my emails and phone calls. The auction has now stopped answering the phone altogether. The auction owes me more than $3,000.00. This auction house is fraudulent. Upon my attempt to get them to respond, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau where I found 3 pages of complaints identical to mine. I was selling these items for my father, a disabled Vietnam era Veteran that suffers from Multiple Sclerosis; I spoke to the CEO about the importance of this being my father's collection and how much it meant to him and how difficult it was for him to let it go but that my mom was chronically ill with Lupus and my father wanted the funds for her medical expenses and care. The fact that the CEO knew all of this and then proceeded to take advantage of my parents is unconscionable. Both Worth Auctions and National Book Auctions continue to have auctions on a regular basis and I am certain they must be stealing from other innocent consigners. read more

I wanted to alert you to a business that is taking advantage of people, outright stealing from people, and hopefully get some help in the process. My father and I spent almost $900 in shipping costs to send his collection of books to National Book Auctions in Ithaca, New York. They sold our items through online auctions. They "hid" relatively valuable books, First Editions, signed books, in large lots of 20-40 random books to a box, that looked as though they were of no value; bidders would not likely bid on such lots because, as it would appear, the shipping charges would cost more than the books themselves. The boxes would then sell for $10, $20, $45. When I realized what they were doing two days before the auction, I told them to pull those items out of the auction; they did not and sold them anyway. It is my belief that they are then buying those large lots themselves and reselling them for their actual value. After the auctions, I have repeatedly asked for itemized statements with my payments. According to their contract, payments are to be sent 30 days after the auction; the last of my items were sold November 4th. I have called, emailed, left messages; initially been given the runaround and now they won't even answer the phones. I have received one email from the CEO, David Hall, giving me the runaround and was told he would call me weeks ago. They don't return calls, emails... I filed complaints on on Yelp and the BBB websites; the BBB had THREE pages of complaints just like mine going back years, and Yelp had a number of complaints like mine going back years. David Hall is a thief, a criminal. I called the Ithaca police department but was told all I could do was file a civil complaint. My father is a 73 year old Veteran that sold his book collection to help pay for medical expenses for my mom who is 75 and chronically ill with Lupus. David Hall owes my parents thousands of dollars. If you are thinking about consigning with this business do yourself a favor and either throw out or burn your items. The proprietor of the business has stolen literally millions from unfortunate individuals who trusted him. He sold their materials, pocketed the profits, and left hundreds of consignors high and dry. How he remains out of jail is a mystery that only the Tompkins County District Attorney and the New York State Attorney General can answer and so far, they haven't. Many of the victims are senior citizens who sold off family heirlooms to raise money to pay medical bills. Disgusting. DO NOT TRUST THIS AUCTIONEER. The owner of Worth (and National Book Auctions) was convicted on multiple counts of fraud by the State of New York, swindeling literally millions from those who consigned lots for auctions but were never paid a penny of what they were owed. Court-ordered restitutions have still not been made by the owner, who escaped jail time by promising to pay back his victims. read more
