Nearby is the school's popular soccor field. A soaring airplane occasionally drops by. The mornings are full of walkers and joggers in small groups. The late afternoons and early evenings have families using the amenities of the park. Bikers and skate boarders get their exercise too. Most people are respectful by wear masks and keeping their distance. The trees in the park are amazing. Throughout the year the trees provide shade and shelter to the birds and squirrels. In the fall the trees change colors. This is a nice park to visit.

This is a small plaza area, located in the heart of the city. It is a major transportation hub that…read morehas a subway station (Blue Line) and a bus stop. The plaza is also know as the Polish Plaza and features A a large black iron fountain. This Plaza was once considered to be the center or town square of Chicago's Polish Downtown and dates back to to the mid 1800s. This Plaza is pretty dirty and needs a good cleaning. I do not know if someone had just feed the pigeons while I was there, but there were a bunch of them in a section of the plaza. They had a security guy in an orange vest walking around. I am not sure how secure the area is though. They host Tuesdays at the triangle in the Summer, where visitors can check out music, flowers, food and more. I will admit, the plaza has seen better days. It could use a good power washing. I do like the history behind the area though and hope that they are able to invest in its future. This is definitely not a destination spot, and manly serves as a pass through for those using the city's transit or going to one of the fine shops or restaurants in the area.

Last year, despite a primarily positive experience, I had three main complaints - unisex shirts, plastic cups at water stations, and not enough port-a-potties. They seemed to remedy the plastic cup issue, but I'm not so sure about the other two. Here are some things worth mentioning about the race: + Music along the course keeps it entertaining. - Expensive entry fee - $80-110 for a half marathon isn't cheap and there are definitely better deals to be had. + Scaled back goodie bags. While this is a negative for most, I throw 90% of my bag's contents in the trash anyway and felt less wasteful. - The finish line layout was awkward, almost maze-like. -Unisex shirts, booo! At this price point, they should offer separate sizing; many smaller (cheaper) races are able to accomplish this. Even the smallest mens size isn't that small. + Shirt exchange at the expo - unlike last year, if your shirt was ginormous, you could exchange it on the spot for a smaller, less potato sack like size. - The medals don't list the race year; the cynic in me says this makes it easier for them to reuse next year. - Not enough people/organization at water stations. Many of the early water stations were completely overwhelmed, not being able to pour fast enough to meet demand. Some of the later ones weren't directing people further down the station causing backups. + New, more interesting course. I like the changes and since I didn't really review the course in advance, it was nice surprise. All in all this is a fun race series and I would recommend doing it at least once. However, the more races I run, the more discriminating I become and I'm not sure this is one worth the high price tag.

But, we were able to do the 5k and the 10k and get the Remix medal, which brought my broke-pieces much joy.. since a half marathon might not have been do-able. Race organization seemed put together well. The expo was large, which is always awesome. The medical tent after the race was busy, but everyone was being helped. Ya could say I hit the Bullseye when I found BowDoc ; )…read more I took the Thursday night archery intro class and it was awesome. I've never touched a bow in my life but I was totally comfortable with everything as it was taught and presented. We got to shoot so much during the class and we also got to stay after class as long as we wanted until the range closed to keep shooting. I loved it. Fyi: The Intro class was only $20 & it's only $15 for open range including renting a bow. And you can stay as long as you want. The people are so friendly, welcoming, and inclusive. I love that there are so many women involved. Apparently women are badass archers! I've been back to shoot now at the open range and there seem to be no egos; there's a great supportive vibe. Everyone just has fun while focusing on honing their skill at this really addictive sport. The archery shop has a good selection, lots of bows, arrows, targets, all kinds of stuff. I asked about getting set up with a new bow and what I like is that they were very honest about the cost of getting started, they didn't try to up sell me or give me the hard sell like so many places would've have since I'm 1) obviously super eager & 2) relatively clueless about archery. The shop is set in a tricky to find place the first time, for me at least. It's set behind a storage unit place. There's a long driveway but you just go past the storages/garages, there is at least one sign (a burma shave/garage sale style sign) that says Archery with an arrow towards the shop. And the shop is easy to see on the left once you drive by the storages & other businesses. Parking is easy. Tl;dr: I feel safe and welcome at BowDoc. :o)

More, those leading the tours are a part of the community themselves, they had vast knowledge, they were quite personable, and they were incredible representation of the community in which they live - my favorite parts, seeing the community gardens, grabbing a bite and having a picnic with the team, & the rich history being told by such empowered young members of the community. Even more impressive is that this non-profit employs high school-aged students, giving them an opportunity for employment & nurturing them into responsible young adults. I urge those that want to see the real side of one of the vast communities in Chicago to take this tour - love this experience!

My favorite & most-visited park when I was a kid. We lived…read morejust on the other side of 99th Street & I'd walk along Walden Pkwy. to meet up with my friends at "Ridge". One of my grade school classmates was lucky enough to live in a house that overlooked the park, on 97th Place. She was a popular girl, especially in winter when they flooded the park's flat area near 97th Pl. & Longwood so kids could ice skate. We envied one girl (my next-door neighbor) who could skate backwards like a pro & boy did she show off her skills. We admired her & secretly hated her because she never fell down. I even took ice skating lessons at Michael Kirby's but still was no match for her. (Candy, if you're reading this, know that you were a star & I was just kidding about hating you.) Wish I could be at Ridge Park right now to take some photos because it's a lovely place. It's just over 9 acres & includes a big Field House built in 1913 (I believe). When I looked up Ridge Park Field House online I was saddened to see that it had fallen into a state of disrepair. I hope they've since gotten the leaky roof replaced as well as the rotten window frames because this building is a treasure. Chicago's Beverly (Hills) neighborhood is loaded with historic homes, some by famous architects, & it was pure joy to spend part of my childhood there. I guess the Vanderpoel art collection is still in the Field House. It features a huge collection of American impressionism, hundreds of paintings. Another good reason to fix the roof leaks. There's a gently sloping hill in the park leading up to Longwood Drive, where I'd sit on a bench & read books. Or daydream. On the other side of the park, along the railroad tracks, Anita & I would climb trees. The Field House offered many activities, even so far back in the day, but I rarely took advantage, preferring instead to be outdoors. Kids weren't loaded up with homework in the distant good 'ole days. We had plenty of free time to enjoy local parks & it was safe to walk or ride bikes there unattended. Obviously, we got tons of exercise in the fresh air. Thanks, Ridge Park, for the memories. So happy to know that you're still goin' strong & creating fond memories for generations of families. If I come back for a visit, I'll take the train from downtown Chicago to 99th & Wood and walk my old route to the park that I remember so well. I'll come in the spring when the flowering trees are in bloom. Hope my bench is still there. I'll bring my camera. But not my ice skates.
