Dr. Thomas is exceptionally knowledgeable and an expert in his field. He clearly explained my issues and all available options. I have already undergone two complex surgeries with him and have another scheduled for July. Unlike many orthopedic experiences where long wait times are the norm, my experience here has been excellent. I have had post-operative appointments every two to three weeks since January, and I have only experienced one delay out of approximately twelve visits. Despite his busy schedule, Dr. Thomas never rushes my appointments and ensures all my questions and concerns are addressed. I also want to commend the office staff; This is a very busy office, everyone is professional and incredibly helpful. I cannot say enough good things about this practice. While my recovery journey has been long, I am so thankful for the exceptional care I have received. Carol Nye

When Tricare for Life is billed either correctly or incorrectly I get notified staying they covered xyz amount or they state due to x probably they didn't pay and I'm not responsible for the bill because of their error. ortho one states I owe $283.61 and never billed Tricare for Life and since we're now rolling into 3 years after the fact----Tricare for Life will probably tell them to go kick rocks. I have NEVER received any correspondence about this from Tricare for Life which means they didn't bill. What's sad is these places are notorious for partial billing and sticking the patient with what's left over-----why accept $75 from Tricare when I can bill the patient for a higher amount of $284.61 I've explained it to them repeatedly and yet they still have not billed Tricare for life and yes they accept Tricare for life. Sad really. I currently have a text stating I owe $284.61 and it's their error not mine

Last year on Halloween night, while attempting to run to plug in some ground displays in my front…read moreyard, I fell and slammed my head onto the ground and cement sidewalk. After a very painful night, I decided the next morning I should probably go the E.R. at St. Ann's. But, then I was transported to Mount Carmel West, because St. Ann's didn't have a trauma team. They performed surgery to repair my first two vertebrae, and rings under those. After several weeks of intensive inpatient therapy I was told that outpatient therapy would be setup for me. We decided to go to WESTAR Rehab and Sports Medicine in Westerville, where they could work with my traumatic brain injury. WESTAR staff provided an extensive, therapeutic, personal and professional plan of action to help me regain communication skills, cognitive functioning, day-to-day motor skills, and physical strengthening and balance. The primary P.T. assigned to me was Rhyan, who oversaw my whole plan of therapy at WESTAR, my Speech Therapist, Jenna helped me regain some of my cognitive functioning, increase my speech skills, make substantial gains in creating thought patterns, to put words together to produce coherent sentences and even develop tools to help with my difficulty when swallowing. Whereas, my occupational therapist, Chelsea, helped me develop writing skills, and due to my broken neck, and lack of movement, boost some of my motor skills. Both Jenna and Chelsea were always friendly, helpful, supportive, engaging, and encouraging. After working with OT for several weeks, Chelsea decided I should understand some tough news: due to my broken neck, and inability to turn my head far enough either way, (to the right, left, up and down) I should think about the fact that I may have to surrender my driver's license. Not only was this hard news to hear, but we could tell that it was really tough for her to deliver it with us. With tears in the eyes of all of us, I sort of anticipated the inevitability of her words. I knew I would not be safe on the road to myself or others. But, Chelsea obviously empathized with my dilemma. Jenna and Chelsea, as my speech and occupational therapists were seen several times a week for nearly eight months. Both of these people were always personable, courteous, fun, and helpful as they pushed me out of my comfort zone to challenge myself to develop and increase my cognitive skills to think more clearly, express my thoughts and ideas, to increase my long-term memory skills, and to learn and practice methods for developing alternate ways of thinking when I had trouble coming up with the exact word or phrase or remembering thoughts, ideas, persons and things that I wanted to recall when speaking. I learned new ways that helped me speak with increased volume and clarity. Due to my fractured neck and subsequent surgery, I had difficulty swallowing some foods, but especially medicines that were very big, yet the doctor had ordered them for me to take. I couldn't cut them or crush them into smaller, more manageable pills because they would lose their potency. My difficulty with swallowing was evaluated by Jenna, my speech therapist and I was taught methods that would help me swallow with less trouble. (Putting applesauce in a spoon with one pill at a time, was especially helpful even with the largest of pills.) After some time and continued therapies with my neck, my surgeon told the physical therapists at WestStar they could now focus more on strengthening and manipulating my neck. So, my PT instructors, Rhyan (my primary PT, responsible for overseeing my progress), Vikki, Shawn, Mikayla, and Vince were all given carte blanche to direct their therapy regimen in the direction of my head, neck, and shoulders. I was involved with speech, occupational, and physical therapies for a long time. As a result I am doing so much better. But, for a time, I thought some of the equipment came to my therapist's directly from the dungeon of the Marquis de Sade. It sure felt like it. However, I am stronger, think and talk more clearly, and can write more legibly and physically grasp things much better. I wear my gait belt each day so others can support me more easily and use my walker for mobility. I surrendered my driver's license. That won't change, but I'm ok with that. All of the staff at WESTAR helped me to accept the things I can't do and to appreciate the things that I can do. Later, my wife's orthopedic doctor suggested that she have some PT, also at WESTAR for her back pain and then her shoulders. She is still undergoing PT with Emily as her primary PT, but also working either with Rhyan, Mikayla, Shawn or Vince two-days-a-week. Should you ever be in the need of any therapeutic help in these areas, I recommend talking to your doctor about WestStar Rehab and Sports Medicine in Westerville, just off of Cleveland Ave.

I was super freaked to find out about my twisted spine, even more so when I started researching the surgery that corrects it. Let's just say it involves a pneumothorax, rib removal, metal rods/bolts, a few months of strict bed rest, and at least six months recovery to normal activities like brushing your hair and bathing yourself. Ugh. From the ER where I found out about my spine, I went to my family doctor, then a pain specialist (though I was in no pain), then to get more X-rays, then to a neurosurgeon in Marion who made me do a circus dance and measured me from just about every angle. The neurosurgeon said I was okay and that I just needed to be monitored via X-ray every five years or so. I was relieved and happy to hear that I didn't need the surgery. I avoided getting a second opinion because I was too afraid of someone telling me that the Marion surgeon was mistaken and that I needed surgery pronto. But, I recently mustered the nerve to visit Dr. Jason Dapore for a second opinion (and just to get a doctor closer to where I'm living now). Dr. Dapore is everything I hoped he would be. He is prime age for a doc - not too old and set in his ways, he is young enough to know about new technology and procedures. But he isn't too young so as to be inexperienced. He made me do the circus dance again and looked closely at my X-Rays. He let me ask him a zillion questions. He was very patient with me. He reassured me that I do not need the surgery now, and probably won't ever need it if I keep my back strong and flexible. He set me up with a physical therapy team in the same building where I'm learning a lot about and already feeling better about being proactive with my scoliosis. The rest of Dr. Dapore's staff is also excellent, and the building is top-notch. The waiting room is large with many options on where to sit and a skylight at the apex of the room. There's also a good variety of reading material from Highlights to Entertainment Weekly to the Dispatch. The ladies at the front desk even make an effort to memorize your name and pronounce it correctly. Plus, the two bathrooms in the front (bathrooms are my niche) are big and always clean. I would give Dr. Dapore 6 stars and a hug if I could, but alas, five will do.

My original doctor is still here (I think) but I changed when my office ended up right next to the Polaris location. I initially got connected to the practice through a referral to a doctor who had expertise in 2 areas I needed help with. The fact that it was sports medicine was just an added bonus. I appreciate their long hours and variety of doctors. They are also connected to PT which I've had to use upon occasion. My current doctor is younger than me - a female, not by requirement but she was available when the prior doctor (whom I didn't really like) left the practice. I had only seen him twice and I landed with him when I changed locations. I had to see my doctor this time as I needed a script renewed. I had the 7 AM appointment and was called back barely after sitting down after checking in. My stats were taken by the assistant and again - soon after she left the room the doctor appeared. NO WAITING! This is a MAJOR pain point for me as I'm a lawyer and my time is valuable. I've had some experiences recently at another doctor (specialist) where I had to get up and leave before even getting called back from the waiting room as I just couldn't waste any more of my time waiting. The frosting on the cake was that the office manager was SURPRISED when I left. Anyways, I have not encountered ANYTHING like this at Sports Max. They respect me and my time. My office moved downtown and I have stayed with the Polaris office. I would like to have a doctor near my home (Gahanna), but OhioHealth doesn't seem to have anything there - and Sports Max definitely does not. As a result, I'll stay with SportsMax and the inconvenient drive up as long as they keep their scheduling accurate and get me in and out quickly!
