Kentwood felt like home the first time my husband and I toured when my son was 3. We joined for a follow up when he was 4 and enrolled happily for K commencing in 2020. School last year was *interesting* - online and a K parent... I had low expectations. Kentwood exceeded expectations. My son's teacher was excellent and I managed to meet some local families while remote. Everyone is SO nice! Moving to the 2021 school year - IN PERSON! We added a kid, now TK and 1st grade students on campus. Our teachers are wonderful (Dr Williamson us a legend! And Ms Lee is kind, genuine, caring and eager to help our children who have never been in school full time.). The campus is clean, great playgrounds and green space. We even have a literacy garden for the TK-K kids to spend free learning time outside. The highlight of Kentwood? Our amazing new principal - she's hands on, working to bring parents back on campus, safely given Covid restrictions. Ms Von Schreiber is a gift to our school community. My children adore her and I admire her greatly. She's out front every day at drop off, responds to emails, dresses up for Halloween and 100 days....we are lucky to have her. This is a magnet school so all parents need to apply and students are assigned based on a lottery-type system. There are sometimes spaces available at the beginning of the school year on a walk-in basis for those who missed the application process, particularly for students in kindergarten and first grade where competition for spaces is less fierce. Students can catch the bus from anywhere within LAUSD. Students have access to science labs once a week, a gifted student enrichment program, and intervention for struggling students. The computer lab has recently been redesigned, and beautiful murals are all over the campus. If you're looking for a safe school with a diverse student body and rigorous academic curriculum, this school is second only to Disneyland when it comes to being the happiest place on earth.

Unfortunately, the front desk staff were rude and inflexible from the moment we walked in. Rather than welcoming a prospective student, they spent the entire interaction explaining all the reasons he couldn't see the campus that day. A simple gesture -- "since you're here, let us take five minutes to show him around" -- would have meant the world to a child. Instead, we got rigid rules and zero warmth. If this is how a school treats prospective families during what should be their best foot forward, I can only imagine the day-to-day environment for kids. We made the decision on the spot not to enroll. I'd recommend other families look elsewhere.

Telling me that lausd not wanting to do ieps and get therapy for these other kids is not an excuse for my child being physically and mentally harmed. Also this school needs to do better with contacting THE PARENT FIRST. There is no reason the grandparents are called first and the parent was never notified nor does the staff ever have an idea about what's going on.
