My opinion: They Don't Stand Behind Their Product I took TV 1 in January. I developed a pilot with specific direction from an instructor at Writing Pad. It was a really good experience. I took TV 2 in Feb, using the same exact draft from TV 1. In the first class of TV 2, the instructor said she didn't understand my pilot, and that I would need to change it anyway because marketing wouldn't know it sell it. I told this is how the instructor in TV 1 specifically told me to do it. I like it, so please only give me notes on how to make this story work. To the best of my recollection, the next 3 classes, the TV 2 instructor didn't to my knowledge read my outline. Each class, I wouldn't get much from her except her demand that I change my pilot for marketing reasons. I called Writing Pad to express my dissatisfaction with a marketing note in a TV Writing Class. This is the first phone call on the image below. The person there said he would look into it and call me back. Almost a week passed. Nothing. An hour before class, I called him. He said he didn't see her doing some other things, but to my knowledge made no mention of the "note issue" I referenced above. I asked him to focus on the "note issue" with the instructor. He said he would. Class started, but I didn't hear anything, so I emailed Writing Pad. They responded with the first text in green in the image attached to say they talked with teacher about the "note issue." The above interaction with Writing Pad didn't sit well with me. A student emailed me the next day, to say that she was dropping TV 2 and she wished to remain in touch. I asked her why she was dropping. Her response is the first email of 3 in the image below. I redacted this and sent it to Writing Pad that same day, Friday, since they had asked for proof regarding the issues I raised on the call. The next day, Saturday, Writing Pad responded with the second email of 3 in the image below, kicking me out of class and seemingly banning me from all of Writing Pad. I can't say why they did this in response to what I see as me simply informing them with proof that other students felt as I did. In response to their email, I told them that my opinion was they were reacting against me to reduce their liability because I had furnished proof. I pointed out the irony that they were saying no teacher at Writing Pad would understand my pilot, when I wrote it at the specific direction of another of their instructors in TV 1. This irony is what makes me feel like they don't stand behind their product. Because their reaction seemed to me unmerited, I reiterated the events through my eyes and told them I would post a review. My intention was to give them the benefit of the doubt to speak for themselves in what I saw as a major overreaction. They responded with the third email, which I see as a veiled threat. I enjoyed the classes I took here. It can be a real mixed bag. Had two instructors I loved and two I wished I hadn't taken classes from. The owners are very responsive and really care about their school. They have mixers and other events for new writers. The only problem would be that it's hard to figure out who is actually a good teacher and who isn't. There's no real way to find honest feedback about the instructors. It's quite expensive so a misstep in this direction could feel like it's career ending as the bad teachers, and screenwriters in general, can be quite nasty. That can be a problem at any school though. Overall, I recommend this place. read more

I just finished writing my first pilot episode, something I thought I could never do. It all started with an idea that I eventually brought to the Writing Pad. First I took TV 101, waited a year, then came back to take TV1, followed by TV2. Surprisingly, each class I took happened to be with the fabulous Steven Peros - This guy has mastered the art form of writing! Prior to taking all these classes, my story, the characters, the world, narrative, etc, were all over the place. Steven's structure and technique helped me to refine and ground the story to make more sense. Also, the classes were fun! Developing a writing outlet during this pandemic, was such a gift. Being able to break away from all the recent local and global news, to write your own world was an amazing experience to have. I didn't think virtual classes would work but it turned out to be great. It really helped to meet with a group of dedicated and thoughtful writers consistently. It brought about some kind of camaraderie between all of us, something I felt we all needed. I love Writing Pad! I've taken several TV writing classes with Jack Kukoda (NBC's Superstore), Todd Waldman (Showrunner MTV's Awkward, Happy Endings) & Devanshi Patel (ABC's Black*sh)--and all three were AMAZING. They helped me develop 3 different TV pilots, all of which I love and was struggling with before class. I've learned so much from each instructor and it's helped me become a better writer--and a better assistant for the writer's rooms I woke in. In fact, my showrunners love the ideas I pitch now & find them valuable. Because Writing Pad's TV classes were so wonderful, I also took two Personal Essay classes. Currently I'm planning to publish them! The owners of the school, Jeff & Marilyn, truly care about students. They aren't all about sales, etc. They want to see their alums succeed, so they - along with the instructors - go out of their way to help you get published or reach your writing goals post-class. Still taking classes all these years later! The best class I have taken so far is the ongoing novel writing class with accomplished novelist Lauren Strasnick. It keeps me writing and I get consistent, constructive feedback on my work every week. Lauren makes sure that each person gets positive and helpful feedback, and she's great at pinpointing issues in a scene. Most of all, she's approachable and really cheers for you. This is the class to take. I've repeated her class so, so many times. It's worth every bit of the investment. The class is fantastic and has helped me finish several novels. I came to Writing Pad completely new to writing and inexperienced. I've taken TV1 and TV2 and am now doing revisions on my first tv script! I had a goal to write and finish one script this year and it's actually happening. I feel like Writing Pad has given me the tools and space to bring an idea to life. Also, and this is true for most anything, I think you get what you put in. So the more time you work on your script or idea and show up prepared to class, the better the experience and your progress will be. Writing Pad is an independently run writing program with a full slate of classes and workshops in fiction, screenwriting, memoir, storytelling, publishing, etc. etc. etc. Basically, if you're interested in writing anything, there should be a class that suits your needs. Classes take place at two locations, one in the Arts District and one across from the Westside Pavillion. They're both cozy spaces, where shoes come off and you learn some craft in a comfortable, loungey setting. Snacks, tea, and coffee are provided. I'm happy to see all the great reviews on Yelp. I'm an instructor, so I can't comment super usefully on the quality of instruction, but I enjoy the classes quite a bit. (Also, I haven't taken classes with them, but my friends Amelia Gray, Ben Loory, and J. Ryan Stradal have taught here, and they're all at the top of their game--go read their books!) They're small, capped at ten students, and the seminar set-up means we have plenty of time to spend on each student's work. I taught a 5-day novel-writing workshop at the westside location and am in the middle of teaching another downtown. (I'll be teaching another downtown starting February, if any Yelpers want to learn novel writing from another Yelper.) We cover all the basics, and do lots of workshopping. It's fun for me, and I hope it's helpful for the students. Writing Pad seems designed for adults with jobs and lives who've always been interested in writing but haven't had time to devote whole strands of their existence to the pursuit of literary greatness. This class is completely what you make of it. I was a naive writer at 2017 with no experience under my belt- worse of all a naivety that I was more interesting and had a better idea than most in the room. I took Steven Peros class on tv writing without an idea of even the genre or my idea but I was so married to the world I created that I was not open to much feedback or criticism. He teaches best in drama- mine I felt was more of a dramedy. He went over structure and I spent a lot of time following my own way. I had a really hard time getting the whole set up and structure understood and though it could have been explained differently, I think I was in a class with a lot of students already very far into their project mostly trying to promote their story- most knew what they were doing as it wasnt their first screenplay. They left class with at least a few scenes written. I had hardly an outline done. It was progress. I then took a break and later enrolled into Philip Starks tv 2 class. I came in with a better outlook. I didnt understand the industry much At all. I again thought I knew what I was doing but I didnt do the homework. I didnt put in the work. I wasn't ready or disciplined enough. I set my tv pilot down. I just picked it up last week. Two years later. I look back and see how resilient I was to really putting in the work. I've since grown and like many amateur screenwriters, had to learn the hard way. There are no shortcuts. I finished my second draft of a spec script on Hbos "Barry" 2 weeks ago. I am on pg 22 of the 30 minute pilot that I was developing at writing pad abd havent touched in 2 years. I have two features I am in the early stages of working on Writing pad is great. I have been taking several classes with Writing Pad and I have been having the greatest time! I work in the movie industry, in a different discipline (post-production,) and it is really difficult to find a safe place to experiment and try new things while getting real feedback from working writers / producers / and showrunners. That is what I value the most here. I am currently working on a pilot, a personal essay and how to refine my stories to be encapsulated in a pitch live with a showrunner. I really like how the instructors know me and are enthusiastic about letting me explore the same material in other formats. I think the personal essay class cracked my storyline for my TV2 class. I have been searching for my voice for a while and because of this workspace, I like what I am writing. I couldn't say enough good things about how Marilyn and Mr. Pad run this business. I learned about Writing Pad at an industry panel. Everyone on the panel said that if you want to be a staffed writer take classes at the Writing Pad. They said USC is great but we know if you have taken classes at the Writing Pad we can trust you in a writers room. I signed up for the certificate program!! After TV 1 with Todd Waldman and TV2 with Brett Paesel, I have a completed pilot. TV 1 with Todd really made me understand the making of a pilot. Todd also shares so much about the business side it's like two classes in one. He really cares about your writing and goes above and beyond to help his students get to where they need to be. I highly recommend any class he teaches. Looking forward to taking another one of his classes. TV2 with Brett was magical for me. Loved her notes and her style of teaching. I highly recommend her! Coming from a Scientific background - I needed to exercise the creative side of my brain in fear of atrophy in my adult life. Writing Pad was a great place to come to activate my creativity. I took online as well as classroom classes and found high value in all of them. It's amazing how much one can learn from instructors that are well immersed in the field - as well as the other students that have the right drive to pull them in. Overall, I felt that the community built by Writing Pad is one that I most valued. There's a solid vibe of openness and authenticity with everyone I've met in the group as well as the classmates. If you want to learn from "Can-do" & "Did-do" folks, this is the place for you. I only wish I could devote more time to it as building a creative product is fulfilling on several levels. Lauren Strasnick's Novel Writing Workshop at Writing Pad is by far the best writing workshop I have ever participated in--and I have taken a bunch. Lauren is a published author with a strong understanding of the writing process and how to help students develop the skills they need to move their story forward. This is not a theory class. This is a hands-on, learn-by-doing-it type of class--which is awesome. You bring four pages of your story each class and get constructive feedback from Lauren and everyone else in the group. Lauren creates an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their work (no matter how raw or unpolished it might be). She gives feedback not only on the words you bring in but also on your overall story, characters and plot--and suggests movies, novels, and books on writing for you to read/watch that might help with the specific aspect of your novel you are currently struggling with. At this time last year, I hadn't written anything for nearly a decade, and then I signed up for a 5 week workshop at Writing Pad. Now I have 4 notebooks filled with daily free-writes, and have 3 long term projects sketched out, all thanks to Marilyn of Writing Pad. I was terrified when I signed up for my first workshop last August. What right did I have to try to write anything? Within the first 15 minutes of class, my fear simply disappeared. The exercises were so fun and the whole process was so positive. Sitting in the Writing Pad living room, with all different kinds of writers, I felt safe (see that thread run through everything about the WP). I stopped judging myself and just wrote, trusting whatever came out. Sometimes, it was pretty friggin awesome. Marilyn has workshops available with balanced feedback as well (for those who want it.) The first time I brought a prepared piece in to workshop, I was terrified (I have the spine of a fluffy bunny) but the balanced feedback was really helpful and I survived the process! I'm kind of a disciple of Marilyn's now. I carry her postcards around in my purse and give them to people when they mention that they used to write or sometimes think about being a writer. Being in that space has added positivity to other parts of my life too. I think ANYBODY who secretly wants to write, or who has written for years and needs to have a little fun, should go to Writing Pad. Great idea, lovely concept. Teachers are great! really they are.... My only concern with this setup is the location. While comfortable and cozy to be in one's living room, be prepared for everything that comes along with being in someone's loft. Example: phone ringing, fax machine going, dishwasher running, emptying of dishwasher, talking, cooking in the kitchen---all while class is doing on. It is very distracting and takes away the focus. Another writer mentioned the same concern to me on their way out, and so while a great concept....it is noisy and loud and the loft is small with no walls to separate anything. For the price, I think it should be a little more of a professional environment. But, that's me.... Great teachers. read more

Even in times of low motivation and production (like now, for me), there's no judgment. My experience at Writing Pad as been beyond 5 stars, truly excellent. I initially took a one-day seminar in the fall of 2019 to gauge my interest. From my very first class, I felt very welcomed and knew that the instructors teaching were very knowledgeable about their craft. After this session, I signed up for the TV Drama certificate program, which includes a process that will take you from beat sheet to script - twice! Right now, I've taken TV 1 and TV 2 with Ryan O'Nan and couldn't be happier! I've grow immensely as a writer. I feel like every session gives me real world insight into the industry, since Ryan is currently working on many TV shows, as well as an opportunity to workshop and elevate my script. The Writing Pad has supported my growth as an artist in many ways. Speaking of, the staff is also extremely supportive. I've had many questions about which classes to take, advice on certain problems, etc. and I've always been met with a positive and thoughtful response. Marilyn and Jeff go out of their way to connect with their students and make sure their students are thriving. They are also really quick at answering emails and calls. I love taking classes at Writing Pad. Since I discovered it a few years ago, I've taken class after class because I love what Marilyn and Jeff have created. I've taken a couple personal essay classes, storytelling, radio storytelling, solo performance, pilot writing, and now podcast. I don't think there's any other program/school/place outside of a university institution that offers what Writing Pad does. I keep going back because I love the service they provide. Marilyn and Jeff have never been anything less than professional, accommodating, lovely people. I saw a couple negative reviews on here and I am appalled. This is NOT a horrible place with horrible people out to get your money. These are good people running a business in a place filled with people thinking people are horrible people out to get your money. Never have I had a horrific experience at Writing Pad and Marilyn and Jeff are far from scammers. They find reputable, knowledgable, working writers to teach their classes and they're great. In the beginning Marilyn used to take classes with us, because she created this out of a genuine love for writing and helping others find their voices. I love that their classes are taught out of their loft - it gives it a comfortable homie feeling and fits right in line with our current culture's tendency toward blending the personal with the professional (i.e. when we take a lyft or uber we're getting in someone's actual car and don't think there's anything wrong with it). Someone mentioned this in a review as if it was a bad thing. Or that Marilyn and Jeff are somehow trying to be deceptive. It isn't and they're not. For anyone thinking of taking classes at Writing Pad, I highly recommend. I've taken a bunch of classes and intend to take more as long as they're operating. I heart Writing Pad. read more

Writing Pad is where I re-started my writer's life in Los Angeles. I think I've taken at least seven class, have gone on two retreats, have met at least 5 pretty fabulous writers and have studied with the writers so frequently that I no longer go all fangirl when I see them (though that last part is hard. they are pretty awesome and I do get pretty excited when I see them). I'm pretty much writing pad junkie. I've taken classes on short story writing, novel writing, writing a YA novel, using found objects to inspire your writing, on how to develop a writing practice, on how to structure your novel, on how to keep the reader hooked and turning the page, on how to write personal essays. I'm sure i'm missing some. What I like best is the writing environment that Marilyn has cultivated that makes writing pad a safe place to write, to share, to make "mistakes", and to learn that there aren't any real mistakes, just more creative gold. There is no pressure to fit into a mold or style of writing. It's just about getting your words on the paper. If there is something you're struggling with, Marilyn goes out of her way to try to help you find your way back on track to your writing goals. read more

I've taken 3 classes at writing pad so far and have learned so much from every one. The in class writing exercises and discussions have really helped me to tap into the heart of my work. The support from the small group sessions make it much more valuable than doing writing exercises on your own. You really get to experience how your work speaks to others...if you're being effective and communicating exactly what you intend to say. The difference with these classes from others I've taken is intimate environment and personalized attention. Especially in the personal essay class--the instructor Taffy is wonderful!!! I've taken two classes here: memoir and personal essay, both with the wonderful Brett Paesel. I love her emphasis on technique as well as her great feedback. Stubborn as I can be, Brett's good suggestions are beginning to affect my work. I get a lot from listening to Brett's critiques--both of my own work and that of my classmates, most of whom are exceptionally talented. That was the biggest surprise for me--the talent on display in every class. It's inspiring and, at times, intimidating. A lot better than a bunch of duds, right? Better still, Brett's a fine person to hang around with for three hours at a stretch--and I can't say that about too many people. Marilyn and Jeff are so incredibly welcoming and fun to be around, as are their associates who help coordinate entry, cookies, chips and announcements. Writing Pad is the best place to get started taking your writing seriously. I took a few memoir classes with Brett Paesel, who is the coolest, and an online proposal class with Little, Brown editor Nicky Guerreiro last summer, and I drummed up a proposal for my memoir using what I learned in both classes. I started pitching it to agents a couple months ago and I had an overwhelming response. From the 15 agents I queried, I ended with 5 offers. What! Literal dream come true. But in the course of the process, every agent marveled at the strength of the proposal. That class is a godsend! It provided the perfect blueprint for success. Nicky and Brett are such marvelous teachers. And I am so grateful for Writing Pad. It really got me back writing for myself again after a long break. Thanks again! I started small, with a 'how to pitch' class (journalism) that was just one evening, and then took several of Taffy's personal essay classes (life changing), and have also taken a copywriting course which was also really great. Marilyn and Jeff are the sweetest, most welcoming, caring people ever and it's great to support a business like theirs which is really making a difference in a lot of lives. To put it simply: if you're considering taking a writing class, go for Writing Pad! P.S. To the person who wrote a bad review (the ONLY person, clearly this is a one-off experience and not indicative of the entire business) I met Marilyn and Jeff THROUGH Writing Pad -- nobody recommended them to me, so I was completely unbiased in my initial interactions. After taking a 1-day storytelling class with Brian Finkelstein (which I really enjoyed), I finally had time to take a longer class, and ended up signing up for a 5-week storytelling class with Cole Kazdin. It was fantastic. She was a nurturing instructor who encouraged your natural voice, but also was a genius with a revision. Typically, I have stage fright, but when it came time for our performance at the end of the class, Cole made the experience as comfortable as it could be. The whole thing went really well, and since then, I was able to perform one of the stories I wrote in her class as a finalist in Writing Pad's Story Lotto competition! As a writer, it was a brand new experience for me, and one that provided me with the confidence to continue moving forward with my writing and storytelling. I didn't win, but It also made people more aware of who I am and what I do -- when you say you're in a storytelling competition with a grand prize of over $1,000, people tend to sit up and take notice. Like the other Writing Pad classes, I highly recommend the storytelling ones. And don't be afraid to take some risks and participate in the Writing Pad events. Just finished taking a class at Writing Pad- it's truly a great environment to comfortably learn more about your craft. You have the opportunity to put yourself and your writing out there in a small group environment. It is more workshop based, than lectured based, so you get more out of it than maybe you would at a UCLA extension class. Translation: You actually get pages written! I would rate Writing Pad 6 stars if I could. I highly recommend any class with Mr. Chris Reed! He is an excellent teacher who really takes the time to get invested in the ideas and passions of his students. I took his Beginner Screenwriting class, and plan on taking his Advanced class later in the fall. If you like small class sizes and a "family feel" then you will feel right at home at Writing Pad. The small class sizes also allow you to have plenty of one-on-one time with the teacher to discuss ideas, and receive guidance on how to iron out those wrinkles in your script. Before my first class with Chris, I was concerned about how my ideas would be received and how accepting the class was going to be when it came time to share ideas. I immediately felt comfortable after meeting Chris, and that concern turned into excitement. I was always excited to share my ideas, and to hear my fellow classmates progress. The classrooms are in a few very nice and cozy lofts in the arts district near downtown LA. That may scare a few people off, but it shouldn't at all. In fact, the space helped create a safe relaxed environment where my classmates and I became very comfortable to create and express our ideas fully with each other. All that being said, it is really up to you to get the most out of your time at Writing Pad. You have to show up to class with an open mind and ready to learn. Chris has great lesson plans that guide you along the journey of writing a script, but YOU have to put the work in outside of class. If you have the desire to succeed, then you will flourish at Writing Pad. Not only was the one-on-one time with Chris extremely helpful, but even when he was working with others I was learning. I have taken two classes at The Writing Pad, East LA location. There is free street parking at this location. I did the payment plan which breaks up the payments over 5 weeks. I also took advantage of the discount offered to returning students. The owners, Marilyn and Jeff, were always quick to respond to my questions before I registered for the courses. The space is comfortable and they provide great snacks and drinks that you can have before class or at the break. I took Matteson Perry for Storytelling and Storytelling/Essay. I was apprehensive taking the classes because at storytelling shows people talk about these extraordinary things they have experienced and encountered and I feel like I do not have any stories that are comparable. Matteson does a great job of helping you mine ideas for stories. He teaches you two different ways to outline stories before you write them. I found the in-class exercises incredibly helpful. You do read your stories out loud to the class. This forced me to make sure I did the work each week since I can procrastinate. Then each student tells you ONLY what they liked about your story or what was memorable. So you don't have to worry about another student trying to take over the class to criticize your story. Matteson will then ask you questions about your story to help you flesh out certain details and provide suggestions/feedback. If you take the storytelling class, you will have a performance show. We had ours at a beautiful space at We Work Hollywood and a big crowd showed up to watch. Marilyn and Jeff do a great job of marketing the grad shows so it is not just your friends that show up to watch. It was such a treat to have a real audience to tell your story to. If you take the Storytelling Essay class, you will work on stories first and then decide which one to turn into an essay. The last week you meet one on one with Matteson to get feedback on your essay and he will give you specific suggestions of which publications you should submit your essay to. I found this incredibly helpful since I knew nothing about how to get an essay published when I started the class. I am hoping to take the humorous essay course and memoir writing course in the near future after having such a rewarding experience at Writing Pad. read more

I recommend the TV Comedy Revision Workshop. I had been looking for a pilot rewriting class taught by a working professional writer. The class was with a showrunner-level writer who also had development experience. I found the notes on my script helpful and the discussion at the start of each class informative about the experience of being a staff writer. I enjoyed having snacks available, especially the tea selection. It's a workshop so writers should expect to read and critique other writers' work. Homework includes joke writing and analyzing popular shows and pilot scripts. The class is five weeks for a dozen people so if you want a lot of notes to help your rewrite, go later in the class and rewrite your script each week based off the notes your classmates get. It's likely that there are similar issues and you won't lose your notes time to hearing things that were said to other people. If you're stuck on a script or would like to better understand the rewriting process, this is a great way to get the guidance of someone who has experience. read more

I could not be more pleased with the classes and workshops offered by Writing Pad. I have taken several classes at Writing Pad and I plan to take several more. I am always amazed at the level of instruction and feedback. Five stars is not enough in my opinion! Nowhere else can you receive this level of instruction, guidance, and critical feedback from highly successful professionals currently working in the industry. Every instructor has gone above and beyond to assist me and help with my level of understand of TV writing, as my original idea for a pilot is being developed. Less than a year ago, I had a vague idea of a tv comedy that I wished to pursue. I was given clear structure in TV 1 with Devanshi Patel, as she offered priceless instruction for my development of the pilot's beat sheet. Next, I was blown away with the level of instruction and professional feedback that I received from both Steve Peros and Jack Kukoda in my following classes. All three instructors that I had the privilege of working with were organized, respectful, and willing to go above and beyond to make this the best experience imaginable for me. Over the course of several months, I was able to go from a beat sheet to writing a complete original pilot episode. I can't wait to continue on this journey with Writing Pad. I could not have done this without this fantastic program, and I highly recommend the Writing Pad to any one with aspirations of being a writer. read more

I had never been to a Moth and knew nothing about Storytelling so I chose this class, thinking it would just be part of my on-going writing education. Matteson's class was so much more than an education - it was an inspiration. This two-time Moth Grand Slam winner (you'll see why when you take the class) gave us such careful, thoughtful, detailed instruction, that my class members and I are now excited to get out there and literally throw our names in the hat at upcoming Moth events -- something that was completely inconceivable previously. I've taken Writing Pad classes with Taffy Brodesser-Akner, Margaret Wappler, and Lauren Weedman and they were all FANTASTIC! I got 15 article series published with Margaret's help on my query letter AND another soon-to-be published piece that I worked on in Taffy's class. Not only have I avoided a ton of submission mistakes through tips I learned from my instructors, but the Writing Pad is awesome for workshopping stories and ideas. Taking classes with the Writing Pad have been amazing experiences. So far I have taken two classes there and plan to take more in the near future. Prior to coming here, I reached out to Marilyn in hopes of finding ways to formulate my writing structure and creativity. She was extremely helpful in providing me with information about upcoming classes and the lesson plans involved. Looking for a particular genre, she was able to enroll me into the particular workshop that fit me and my interests best. In that class, I was instructed by Summer Block Kumar who made the class really enjoyable; teaching a thorough and well detailed hands on class. Learning from Summer was fun, she brought together a class through fun exercises, team work while surrounding us positive vibes. I have nothing but good things to say about Writing Pad. I've taken 2 classes here with Natasha, who is amazing. She gives insightful and detailed feedback and is more than willing to help you get published if she thinks your work is ready (she helped me get published on Vice), but will definitely work you hard to get the best work out of you. It's not a place where you just submit work and walk away. With both of the classes I've taken, I feel I've gotten more than my money's worth with all of the feedback and networking opportunities. If you work hard, the classes can pay for themselves. Plus, the classes are honestly fun. Marilyn is also wonderful. She has made my experience at Writing Pad even better by being so accommodating and patient with any questions or requests I've had. They offer a ton of different classes and host all sorts of panels with well-known writers. I was pretty surprised I had never heard of this place; it's such a hidden gem for writers of all genres. I love The Writing Pad. I have been taking classes here for over a year now. Each has been great! I started my blog actlikeagirl.tv after a blog writing class with Jessie Rosen of 20-nothings.com she even had me up for her story telling show Sunday Night Sex Talks! Jessie provided me with prompts I still use everyday! It was a one day class and I walked out with five solid ideas and two finished products that need light editing! I took Matteson Perry's storytelling where we learned story structure and how to build ideas. Matteson was great, honest, and encouraging! By the end of the class we had two well polished stories! The class also includes a performance for friends an family! Currently I have been taking a pilot writing with Mike Ellis. I keep coming back because I'm learning so much. As someone whose never written a pilot before Mike gives such great advice and encouragement! The classes a kept smaller to give proper time. read more

I just left a review for Writing Pad's other location, but want to leave a review here as well since they really have helped me grow as a writer. I'm an experienced writer, but was looking for a boost to level up. My experience at writing pad has been very positive. The quality of classes depend on the instructors and your learning style, but they do a really good job of curating currently working professionals who give great feedback and help shape your work. Their classes are good for writers of any level, since instructors will meet you halfway. The environment is also extremely community-based, which I found very energizing, especially since writing can otherwise be an isolated process. I love how these classes are focused on specific types of writing and are taught by working professionals. My first class was the solo performance class with Lauren Weedman and it was fantastic. I've now taken classes at both locations on a few different topics. All the classes I've taken have helped me to be more focused and productive.
