There are not enough stars or superlatives to sum up Mark and X Marks the Spot. The ancient Greeks had a god of happy accidents, and it was by accident that we found Mark to handle my late mother's home clearance and sale. From the beginning he was open, friendly and hard working - he did it all: getting movers, property clean out and upkeep, recommending an attorney (who was excellent), His communication and advocacy skills were incredible. One incident to sum it all up: A certain fuel oil company neglected to deliver to the empty house during a recent cold snap. Fortunately, Mark was conducting one of his routine checks on the property, then took charge of cleaning up the damage from the ruptured pipes, all without being asked, since we live several states away. We never needed to worry about anything, he stayed actively involved even when the closing was delayed for over a month. Mark was a blessing to our family during a difficult time. We stumbled across the reviews for Mark's business while looking for an estate manager for our 11,000 square foot warehouse. He responded to our inquiry within the same day and requested detailed photos, then drew up a custom proposal for us within the week. Our late father's warehouse was filled to the brim with 40 years of invoices, architectural plans, business documents, and paperwork. Mixed in with these business assets were priceless historical family photographs, immigration documents, antique and vintage items, and family heirlooms. And these treasures were hidden underneath piles of dusty papers, or 16 feet in the air, or behind a dangerous stack of razor sharp blades, or under a family of rodents. Luckily, none of these obstacles deterred Mark from his work. We quickly realized that Mark was going to leave no stone unturned for us. He and his team worked through sawdust, regular dust, fly traps, rat traps, live rats, mice, cockroaches in an ice cold building, night and day for a week, to dig out every single valuable item. They rigged difficult to reach items themselves, crawled over huge trash dumpsters, dealt with live electrical wiring and did it all in record time. Within one week, our packed warehouse was left broom clean and our items were neatly stored in clear bins. Throughout the process, Mark answered all questions speedily, kept us informed with up to the hour updates, and handled all of our items with extreme care. He found amazing documents that we would have missed hidden under piles of paperwork. He and his family were genuine, kind, and professional. We are so happy with the result. Over the past year I've dealt with several estate liquidators, tag sale companies, and auctioneers. "X Marks The Spot" is easily one of the worst! I understand both sides of the business. You hire a company to help liquidate items left in an estate; then as a buyer you look for professionals who know what they're selling and can at work with customers. "X Marks The Spot" seems to fail on both ends. Not only were they unfamiliar with the items they're selling, they treat potential buyers like trash. In a business based on word of mouth and sales, that's just a recipe for losing money. Here's an example of their ineptitude and rudeness; X Marks the Spot lists a multiple day estate sale as "appointment only". This isn't the norm, but it happens with certain estates. Rather than taking quality photos of the items they're selling, they take a handful of amateurish, low resolution photos and post them online. Upon calling to make an appointment, you're greeted with an abrupt "what do you want?", rather than a "hello" or "X Marks The Spot, what can we help you with?". After this incredibly rude reception, you're grilled about the items you're interested in from the poorly taken photos. It's hard to make an offer on items you can't see in person, especially if the company doesn't feel like letting you see those items. Then you're referred back to the inadequate photos and told to call again. Despite all of this, if you do make an offer or inquire about pieces for sale, they either don't know what they're selling, give you absurd prices that don't reflect the item's value/condition, or simply told that certain items are only sold in groups with other items. Like I said, I've dealt with several of these estate liquidation companies, and this was an awful experience. read more

RUN, DO NOT WALK, TO HIRE MARK!! This guy is amazing - professional, efficient, responsive, courteous, effective, and an absolute pleasure to deal with. We hired Mark and his team in the Spring of 2019 to organize an estate sale and liquidation for a fairly challenging project in Nassau County, which he executed to perfection. The entire process went incredibly smoothly and quickly, precisely as Mark described. The Estate Sale Nazi. I'm righting this review because I work hard all week and despise idiots who waste my precious time on the weekends. After attending other estate sales, run by professionals whom knew what they are doing, on a past Saturday morning I went to an estate sale by "X Marks the spot". It started at 12:00 PM and it advertised records which I tend to buy. After entering, four other people and I started looking through the boxes of mostly dull poor condition records. The guy running the sale starts yelling, " l want to sell all the records for $300. And there will be no cherry picking." Telling us how we were going to buy those records, like a real Estate Sale Nazi. I politely said, "there not worth $300." He told me to "keep my opinion to myself." I asked the price of 8 unpopular records. He looked at the eight records like a chimpanzee looking at a monkey wrench. He said "at least $150." I said "What!" There was one I thought could be $10. in a record store. I said "ok, I'll buy this one." He said, "No you can't buy that. I said no cherry picking." I was flabbergasted. I had to run out of there. What a waste of precious weekend time. The other buyers had better records than I did. I can't imagine what they had to endure. What a Estate Sale Nazi. I give him one star for breathing. I resell vintage clothing, and recently attended a sale by X Marks the Spot, a by-appointment-only sale (which I normally find off-putting and intimidating, mostly because I know most of the estate companies who run sales in the area and I don't like a hard sell in a one-on-one situation where I know what I'm looking for and they don't). I called Mark and asked about the quality of clothing available so I wouldn't waste my time and he assured me that there were quality items left from the eras I inquired about. There were photographs in the sale listing online, but they were cursory, as I find most estate sales consider the clothing last, as they have bigger furniture to sell and they take precedence, but I could tell from the images that the "texture" of the sale--where did these people travel, what did they collect, etc--was well documented in the wide range of pictures, so I went. Mark was helpful in guiding me to the areas where I would find what I came for, and told me history of the house, and seemed genuinely knowledgeable about the items on sale. He did not hound me or hard sell, and I ended finding a ton of stuff. As a reseller I know what the market is for vintage items, and how difficult or easy it is to resell them, and the pricing was fair, though I always tell estate sale people to look at Ebay for "Sold Items" rather than what they see for sale currently to see exactly what things sell for, as the market is only what people will pay. area of Every estate sale company is known for certain things, and some truly specialize in specific eras and higher end quality items. I only know Mark through this one sale so I don't know his expertise, but in this particular case he was very professional and knowlegeable. I would recommend him. read more

Mark, owner of X Marks the spot is insanely overpriced on any item offered at his estate sales. He asks above retail then says "what do you want to pay?" He is also rude and insulting. We recently attended his estate sale and Mark, speaking loudly and accusingly, demanded we follow him to show where we left overpriced items we decided not to buy. Why? Because the 6 large boxes weren't put back in the exact same spot as we found them. Did he think we were going to sneak them out in our pockets!! We have been attending estate sales for over 30 years and have never seen such incompetence. He does a disservice to the estate he's representing by his over retail pricing and his horrible demeanor. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time as a buyer or potential estate liquidation client. He claims he gets "shrinkage" at his sales. The only shrinkage he gets is in the line waiting to get into his sales as people discover how badly they're run. read more
