SUCH a great find!!! We were struggling with where to eat, and our trusty Rick Steves guide book recommended this place so we decided to give it a go and I'm SO glad we did. Definitely our best meal in Barcelona by far! We decided to get a pitcher of sangria and share some tapas and everything was amazing. The sangria was nothing like we've had in the states, it was light and fizzy and tasted phenomenal. We got five tapas to share and that was enough for a full dinner. We also hadn't eaten much throughout the day so we were pretty hungry. We shared the pan con tomate, cheese plate, bravas (fried potatoes with delicious sauce on top, calamari/squid and cod fritters. Everything tasted better than we expected! We wanted more of everything it was that good. The price was only 26 euro for all five tapas and the sangria which also was not a bad price. The servers were so nice and fluent in many different languages to serve all the guests. We would definitely recommend checking this place out if you're looking for food in the Gothic Quarter! read more

Nice place a little off Las Rambla in the bario neighborhood in one of the side winding "streets" Or walkway. The place is sit down and clean. Service was nice. Prices very reasonable. We had about 8 tapas, bottle of wine and 3 bottles of water/soda. The soda and water for the kid was almost more expensive then the really nice wine (20 euros). The chorizo along with the cheese, olives and tomato bread was an excellent combo. The other tapas were also nice. Service was attentive and nice. Prices very reasonable due to price of wine bottle. We were wandering around the back streets of Barcelona and decided to stop and eat some tapas since we hadn't eaten all day. We walked by and decided to check it out. The waiter came and gave us an English menu. We ordered pan con tomate, Patates bravas and la bomba, as well as a beer and sangria. Now the reason why this place is getting 5 stars is the sangria. This was the BEST sangria I had in Barcelona. It was fizzy, sweet, light and got me tipsy after the mini pitcher. The food was pretty good too! We have bad luck going to restaurants in touristy areas so we really lucked out with this one! The pan con tomate is exactly what it sounds like, bread with crushed tomato and olive oil on top. The potatoes in the patates bravas were crispy and I liked how they had the sauces divided so you can dip it however or mix it as you please. One of my favorite places for patates bravas. The bombas were really interesting! I'm not sure if I'd order them again but I'm glad I got to try it. I would definitely recommend this place!!! read more

Gorgeous modern space located off a winding stone pedestrian street in the Gothic section. The contrast of the old exterior & modern interior is done on such a way that it really works. Servers were very attentive and offered a menu in English. Good selection of wines & tapas. We started with olives & Iberian ham, which are often brought out as you wait for your orders. Our favorite of the evening were the Bombas - fried spicy potatoes & meat balls sitting on a sauce I could probably eat on a lot of things. Totally yummy! Other favorites were the citrus steamed mussels and tempura fried veggies. The codfish fritters and eggs broken over fried julienned potatoes and Iberian ham were both interesting but not items I'd likely order again. Great for taps, in a hidden location but worth finding this place. Our server Philipe was great very attentive and his English was great. Very nice wine selection and great prices. I loved the spicy red tomato sauce and the garlic sauce that was served with several dishes. My favorite tapas were the chicken lollipops, cooked perfectly, crispy and farm fresh tasting. The also have the Jamon cut small and very tasty, I would say a unique Jamon, you would have to try it here. read more

Great find! There are several good tapas bars near by that do the toothpick thing. Unfortunately, they wouldn't let us do that and sit down, so we stopped into Xaloc where they immediately seated us and presented all sorts of great tapas. We tried all the wines, including a perfect Tempranillo. The Iberian ham croquettes were the best and the chicken lollipops came with a great, spicy sauce. The fuet was a generous portion. A gem in the Gothic Quarter. The calamari was lightly breaded and melts in your mouth. The blood sausage had a good flavor when mixed with onion confit. The Burrata is a must! Creamy and great flavor. For the mains...the black rice with cuddle fish is cooked perfectly. So silkly and full of flavor. A little camp fire on the tastes buds at the end. I'm already craving more of it. My wife had the sautéed veggies with mushroom and king prawns was perfect for those craving veggies while on vacation. I had several bites and the flavor was great. A classier tapas restaurant with an authentic Spanish menu. I love the tapas places that charges per toothpick, but after a while my girlfriend and I were hankering for something a little more formal. Taking a recommendation from our friend Rick Steves, we came to Xaloc.A little off the beaten path but still immensely popular, it features a wide open space, English menus, and pleasant wait staff (that seem able to speak several languages). With the assistance of the waiter, we ordered several tapas - Olives (2 euros), Ox tail Croquette (1.50 euros per croquette), Iberian Ham Croquette (1.50 euros per croquette), Bravas (4 euros), and the delicious toasted bread topped with a light sauce and oil. Each dish was better than the last. I highly recommend getting the olives at the top of the meal and eating them throughout, as they are not only delicious but an excellent palate cleanser (especially if you get a glass of wine, which you definitely should). The croquettes are a must-order, especially the ox tail, which was so juicy and delicious. This doesn't take anything away from the Iberian ham, which was oh so tender. I'm not sure what they put on the Bravas, but it was delicious and complemented the potatoes, which were lighter and less salty than I anticipated...just perfect. Rick Steves knows his restaurants, and I have to agree with him that this place is a step above other restaurants in the crowded Gothic area. It's definitely worth a visit. read more

My husband and I were pretty hungry one night after a long day of being touristy and we stumbled upon this place in the gothic quarter. Luckily there was one 2 person table left just for us in this busy little restaurant. We got sangria to start - kind of bubbly but very nice! 1 liter was 10 euro. For the meal we ordered the following tapas - pan con tomate, peppers, patatas bravas, garlic prawns, and gazpacho. All we're fabulous. Believe the bill was ~38 euros total with drinks and food. Xaloc was one of my favorite tapas restaurant during my last visit to Barcelona! Located in the Gothic Quarter, couple blocks away from the Cathedral and Mercat de la Boqueria. We've ordered array of tapas dishes to share. Following are some of the dishes that really stood out: 1. Pan de Coca(1.70 Euros)~ It's a traditional Catalan bread. A rustic bread with crispy crust and fluffy doughy center, which was lighted toasted, topped off with drills of olive oil and smeared with fresh tomato slices. So simple, yet satisfying. 2. IBERIAN HAM(6.90 Euros)~ Authentic Iberian pork, which was thinly sliced, cured. It's one of their signature dish, melts in your mouth with salty and nutty flavors. 3. Croquetas(2.9 Euros)~ Iberian Ham Croquettes, 3 pieces of deep fried potato croquettes stuffed with Iberian Ham, creamy and crunchy. 4. Ensaladilla Iberica(2.90 Euros)~ Iberian Salad. It's an egg salad with diced potatoes and sprinkles of cayan pepper. 5.Tortilla Con Choriz(4.90 Euros)~ SPANISH TORTILLA WITH CHORIZO 6. Really really tasty. We wandered in here, starving, and were happy to discover that the food is excellent! My friend and I shared a bomba de la barcelo which is like a better version of a fried Hush Puppy ball, and I devoured my salmon plancha (lime sauce). The sauce was comparable to a cream cheese and it went together wonderfully. I also sampled my friend's esparragos jamon (asparagus and dried ham), and it was also delicious. We were totally zonked after a long day wandering and didn't feel like committing to the full late-night dinner adventure, so we stopped by here for some tapas around 8:30/9 pm. We each had a glass of wine (very reasonably priced and delicious), plus tomato bread (simple and tasty), bombas (cheese and meat croquettes--very nice, nothing spectacular), fries and jamon with eggs (all ingredients I love. All of it was very traditional and very tasty and we had our first pitcher of sangria [which, in Barcelona, was always sweet with an added effervescence (like soda) - and which I discovered that I do not care for]. Found this place just around the corner of our appartment. Turns out this place was to be our safe bet for the rest of our stay. If you are looking for a reasonably priced experience of tapas: this is a good place to go. The food is very good, the menu offers ample variation. Friendly service, however stressed at a busy night. (We went here twice.) The place has a nice feel to it, atmospheric with a promise of good quality. It was a bit pricy, but not so much as to be afraid of going there. I was a bit upset that when I did track this place down they only had cold tapas available !! :( Sad face big time! It was 6pm on a sunday and the kitchen was closed so since I was already there I decided to have a cold tapas of cold meats and cheeses and some nice olives. I can't really give this place a full rating as I didn't get to experience the dishes which was mentioned in peoples positive reviews from yelp and trip advisor. Can I rate it 0? Terrible place because of the rude attitude of the staff. 2:30 in the afternoon We just wanted sangria on a nice Saturday afternoon. They seated us. We order sangria and a large water. They brought it to us then asked what food we wanted to order. They became very indignant when we said no food just drinks. He looked at me and said, incredulously, "This is a restaurant." Yes. And? I was confused. You have to order food. This is a restaurant. No thank you I said. He then suggested we move to the window seats and a high top bar and stools. While we were gathering our stuff the manager then. SME over and promptly told us again, "this is a restaurant." At which point I said fine, then we are leaving. Found great place less than 100 feet away called, El Portalon. MUCH better ambiance. Friendly people. Way better place.
