More like 3.5 stars. It's so refreshing to have a local Mexican restaurant where every item on the menu doesn't end with "and smothered in zesty Pepper Jack cheese." As much as I like cheese, it should complement the other flavors in the dish, not overwhelm them. It seems like many Mexican and Italian restaurants forget this as they like to throw on fistfuls of cheese atop every dish they serve; luckily Xinantecatl understands such a concept. Upon stepping through the front door of Xinantecatl, you are assaulted by an impressive array of imported Mexican foods including--but not limited to--nopal, cassava, plantains, corn husks for wrapping tamales, lots of dried peppers and spices, and Hispanic candies and snack foods. I could spend a decent amount of time just checking out all the interesting prepackaged comestibles here, but since I really wanted to try out the food from their grill, I headed to the back of the store where the taqueria is located. The menu consists of your typical Mexican fare from tacos to menudo and chimichangas to huevos rancheros. I settled on two tacos (lengua and chorizo) to start and then the tampiquenas platter for my entree. The tacos were average as I found the fillings to be unexciting. The lengua was kind of dry and the chorizo wasn't as spicy as I would have expected. If the tacos were better, I would've given Xinantecatl 4 stars but since tacos are such a staple of Mexican cuisine, the underwhelming examples here result in a 3 star rating. The tampiquenas platter, however, was quite excellent. A decent sized cut of flank steak was the centerpiece and it was flavorful and tender; I was impressed by how well this often tough cut of beef turned out here. Surrounding the steak were portions of refried beans, rice, chilaquiles, and a helping of fresh avocado salad. I am a huge fan of refried beans and enjoyed the representation here at Xinantecatl--rich and creamy. The rice was well-seasoned and the chilaquiles featured a delectable salsa verde sauce. I thought the addition of the avocado salad was excellent as the cool flavors of the vegetables complemented the other dishes very well. Though not extraordinary, Xinantecatl offers a solid array of Mexican food. Luckily there is a burgeoning Hispanic population in the area because the long-time residents of the area tend to be rather xenophobic and I'm doubtful whether many will visit Xinantecatl. I'm glad to have another food option in the area (especially one where I can get menudo) and I'd recommend going in to Xinantecatl for some authentic Mexican cuisine. read more

Amazing food. When my family and I went there, we were treated as family. There is only about 4 tables in the restaurant (in the back of the store) so you never have to worry about having slow food. They also have jarritos soda, which is a plus. read more

Had the chicken enchiladas on a Saturday for lunch. It was too busy for the amount of tables they have. Only one server doing everything. The meal was solid. Nothing over the top, but would definitely go back there again for something more adventurous. The store employees are friendly as well. Came here today at the behest of my husband who has been dreaming about the perfect burrito for the last four days... He was not disappointed. This place serves up very authentic Mexican food. If you can get past the fact that the restaurant is at the back of their (Mexican) grocery store, then you have no problems. Very nice people tho.. And of course very good food. Amazing, traditional Latin American food in the back of a bodega. Food was delicious, flavorful and cheap! Menu went beyond the standard Mexicali fare. Went on a Friday night and ordered in store for takeout service. It did take 45 minutes to get the food. Next time I'll order ahead of time from home and then show up. Great food but be careful not to ask for anything extra- our meal of 3 orders of tacos and a burrito cost $50+ because we asked for cheese to be added to our tacos. It was $8 extra. My son asked for flour tortillas for his order it was an extra $5. Chip and salsa was extra too. There were no sides either. Asked Siri to find me a Mexican joint in the area and this is where she sent me. When I first walked in I thought I was in the wrong place because it looks like a Mexican bodega. In the back is where the magic happens. Great authentic Mexican food. Not some bastardized Americanized slop. This is home cooked Mexican food. I will stop there any time I am in the area. Ten minutes later, with a steak taco and Chicken and Pineapple Tortas in hand, I was SILENTLY indulging in the MOST AMAZING MEXICAN FOOD EVER. My parents have been taking me here since as long as I can remember. Now that I'm 22 and don't live at in the Philly area anymore, any time I come back to visit I have to get take out from here. I usually opt for their tamales, pupusas, and ceviche. However, all their entrees and platters are great. Their cuban torta is also a favorite of mine. The menu has something for the adventurous and for the not so. This place is the most authentic Mexican food in town Souderton. I haven't dinned-in since they redid the place but in high school I used to dine in and watch a couple of older woman cook up amazing food. I'd rather support a place like this with my dollar than Margaritas or any other chain. read more

This place is the real deal. It takes a while to cook the food, so if you're getting carryout it's better to call ahead. Everything is fresh fresh fresh and homemade. Best I've had since I moved from Chicago. Anything with the al pastor (pork and pineapple) is scrumptious. Fiery hot salsa verde. And sopes with just the right amount of everything on them. Delicious! Hubby and I had the steak burrito special and chimichanga. Can't wait to go back to try something else on menu. We also tend to be picky since we ate authentic food on a Mexico vacation. Didn't know that they are BYOB until we got there but they had soda and drinks to buy from the cooler. Menu also featured Cuban dishes that sounded good which I plan to try sometime. read more

When we moved up from VA we missed our local mexican restaurant . . . until we found this wonderful place! Thanks to YELP, I found the restaurant, before the addition. Fabulous! Now that they did the addition, my guess is that they get even more popularity from the community. Our favorites are Quesdilla Sincro. Special Buritos, and tacos gober. Guac is awesome. I have a family of 7 and we all have things we like and never leave hungry for a fantastic value. Definitely worth a try. Friends from out of town have all concurred. read more

You do have to walk through a small Mexican store to get to the restaurant but it is well worth it. The restaurant has been nicely updated. The food is unbelievable. My wife had the shrimp tacos and I had the tongue tacos and we split a civeche. The civeche was large and excellent. My wife's shrimp tacos were some of the best I've had and the tongue tacos were great. The staff was very pleasant. read more
