The owner had three customers in the store, including myself, with about 15 minutes left until close. He helped everyone out and still had time to suggest several fishing spots in the area. I picked up a few flies I didn't really need, but helping the local shops is important. I also found out he sells online too so I'll keep him in mind when I need something. It's interesting to do and we have walked through many times. Just as enjoyable, though, are the nature areas just before the hatchery and the river access. We like to come here to enjoy the sounds of the water and take short walks with our dog. It's really a lovely place to stop for an hour or two and just enjoy the peace and quiet. The trails are very short but they do have picnic tables and we have enjoyed a nice lunch here by the lake as well. I think a more fitting name would be the Mokelumne Fish Hatchery and nature area because we happened upon this location by chance but I am so glad we did. We probably make the drive here 3-5 times a year and it is definitely worth checking out if you are in the area.

I discovered this pond last summer and am so glad I did. My kids (5, and 8) have taken some sincere interest in fishing and Sawmill was the perfect place to teach them some basics. There's a large parking lot and easy access to the shoreline of the pond with some quality shade opportunities to fish from. During the weekday afternoon we were there, the traffic was light and we had a lot of choices on where to fit. Sadly the time of day probably didn't help us get bites, but we had some chances to catch and a lot of quality time together. I imagine if you hit this on the right day near a stocking, the bite could get hot and really hook a kid on fishing. This is a great community resource that is largely frequented by locals. It presents a good opportunity to get your kids out fishing and I highly recommend you get it on your radar for a future visit.

Something here needs to change, but after yesterday's shooting, we won't be coming here again. There is always someone that has to ruin it for everyone else, can't even act normal while at the lake. This could really be a very beautiful place to enjoy with family, and the only way that will happen is for Rangers and police department needs to step up or raise the fees. Why are you allowing vehicles park in RV spots just because they come out to drink, do drugs, etc. 2 young kids were parked in our spot and we had to ask them to leave.
