Joining some friends, we entered a quiz team for the Tuesday quiz nights at New Brew Bar in Rosedale. The questions are far removed from your general quizzes, these guys are professional, and they prepare a good night's entertainment. The questions are tough, and you need a well balanced team to answer from the variety of testers. Our team consisted of a chef, a writer, a traveller and two sports fans. This came in handy, but we were still left reeling when it came to naming Lindsay Lohan's exes. Darn, they make it tough, and our formidable team finished a respectable third. Not bad for a first night out, considering the regulars have teams much bigger than ours. New Brew is a great spot to enjoy after work drinks, or simply enjoy a night out with friends.

So now we have this voluminous pub with a fun, purple branding that doubles as a throw back to Auckland's past. There is plenty of seating (including the small cluster of outdoor couches everyone is vying for) and plenty of beers on tap. Inexplicably you are only allowed to smoke on one half of the outdoor seats. Staff seem to stay behind the bar unless they are trying to top up your barely finished drinks, which they do with hunter-like efficiency and a portable EFTPOS unit. Slightly too overpriced to be your local-after-work.

The beer was cold, the sides were quickly served and the mid-afternoon sun was sitting just right for us to have a bit of a winter sunbathe. My next trip to The Zookeeper's Son was with a couple of Americans who had been foolishly trying to figure out the best New Zealand beers on their own. They bought Tui because it said it was an IPA. Woof. The Zookeeper bartender was extremely helpful with the yanks - told them what he liked, ascertained what they liked, and then came up with a beer they would enjoy drinking. It was a hit! As for the decor, this place is a bit like all of the other bars owned by The New Zealand Pub Company (like the Elephant Wrestler on the Shore, which is decked out similarly to this place). The cheesiness of a themed bar often elicits a groan out of me, but the New Zealand Pub Company does it with enough camp that I'll let them get away with it.

There were four of us; we each ordered fish and chips and a drink and paid up front; the drinks were in our hands immediately. After half an hour of waiting for the food, I asked the manager what was going on and she told me "10 minutes". 15 minutes later, I asked again - this time, the barmaid went upstairs to talk to the cook and told me "10 minutes". 15 minutes later (an hour after ordering), I went back AGAIN and this time the manager went up and promised we'd have our food in just a few minutes; she offered us a free drink. We finally got the food about 70 minutes after ordering. To be fair, it was hot, fresh, and tasty - but it was NOT worth waiting that long for. Go for the beer; ask lots of questions about the wait for food.
