I must admit that on more than one occasion I did join them in their feast. Origin Kebab in the Buranda Centro Shopping Centre is also know as Afiyet Kebab and the Buranda Kebab Cafe. I am pretty sure they are all the same place as they have the same address and telephone listing but if not then I am talking about the one in the Buranda Centro Centre, directly across from Woolworths. Now the kebabs here are pretty standard. They are cheap yet filling and certainly hit the spot on a lazy Sunday morning. Sometimes the staff are happy and cheerful, sometime they glare at you, it really is a matter of luck as to the level of service you get. On a whole, this kebab shop is pretty average. Their is nothing really good nor bad about the place. If you are a local then it is convenient and it does really do the trick to subdue the Sunday hangover.

They're open for breakfast through the dinner and many had said to me, "Oh it's so expensive." Champ's tag line is: "Good eating crafted with skill - extraordinary food that won't break the bank." I really think this sums it up perfectly. For the combination of ingredients and the quality of ingredients it is a meal that is not only affordable but priced acceptably. We started upon the lounges for our coffee and when it was apparent breakfast would be had we were ushered to a table. Champ is a curious decor - it's somewhere between recycled chic, Danish retro and urban retreat. Although it sounds like a right mash up, it works. Plus the sun shining through the bougainvilleas of the South Bank arches transport you to grand ideas of sipping a spritzer along the Riviera. I dined here for breakfast and let's just stop to contemplate the paper stock of the menu. It's a little bit fancy. I'll get a "heck yes" from those stationery nerds out there. I chose the breakfast rissoles with a fried egg (they accommodated without fuss my request to have the egg poached instead), mushrooms and spinach. Following my breakfast buddy's lead would have been better. She ordered the Moreton Bay Bug with whiting and chorizo with cherry tomato, chilli and ginger on sourdough. Yes, they have Moreton Bay Bugs on their breakfast menu. Winning, right? As Mem says, their Merlo coffee is without complaint and the fruit fizzes. Oh, the fruit fizzes. I had the apple, raspberry and mint and for the impending summer these drinks are the perfect breakfast (or any time, frankly) refresher.

Located right on Grey Street, Champ's ambience is a marriage between utility and modern, giving the open air restaurant an upscale yet comfortable ambience. I love rustic modern decor (especially if it's handmade), and was rather taken by their "lamp shades" across the ceiling, as well as the floral touches around the restaurant. The open air-ness of the restaurant closed in by tall glass windows makes it the perfect place for a latte, drink, or a light meal on a sunny day in South Bank, or even on evenings during the weekend, perhaps before a show at the Performing Arts Centre. And I recently found out they play the QPAC shows on a large screen right outside the theatre sometimes! That makes me happy. =) I'm really not a fan of public transportation, but it gives me an excuse to make fooding-stops. Since the weather's been warming up, I've averted myself from the heavier foods, and Champ was the perfect place to lunch. When I first arrived, there was a bit of a confusion of whether or not I could seat myself, and what they had to offer for lunch. The waitress asked me whether I was in for lunch, and pointed out their pastries, muffins, and sandwiches in their glass cases, which isn't a great selection. It wasn't until I asked if they had an actual lunch menu that they brought out the actual menu. Weird. I had a flat white, as per usual, and decided go for something from the kitchen, rather than pre-made. I was torn between the Peking Duck Dumplings in Duck Consomme with Shiitake and Scallop Mushrooms and the Capellini Pasta tossed in Sea Urchin Butter with Morton Bay Bug, Ikura Caviar and Truffle Cream, but went for the latter. Though the portion was a bit smaller than I had expected, the pasta was the perfect texture (which never happens when I make pasta) and the sauce tasted awesome! I originally thought the pasta was supposed to come with ikura caviar, but realized it was part of the truffle cream. I was a little disappointed, as the dish would have had more points of interest if there was actual ikura caviar on top. The Morton bay bug was tasty, and was actually better than what I had in Cairns [but still not better than lobster!]. The pasta was satisfying (and perfectly salted for my taste), and did I mention, I received an entree courtesy of the chef? (the bread and salmon) The only thing I regret is that the servings are dainty and that the service was a bit messy at the beginning, but I like the place otherwise.

Forget the claim that this is a 1920s, prohibition inspired bar. Forget that in current bar-speak…read morethis means (drinks in mason jars and other novelty vessels). Leave all these judgements at the door as you perch upon the bar stools and high tables outside Next Door Kitchen & Bar (next door to Ole on Little Stanley Street) or take a table inside. Instead, focus on what they do well: small plates and cocktails. The cocktail list is not extensive by any means, but what they do do they do well. During our UYE I tried the specially concocted Rudolph Valentino (Scotch, Martini Rosso, Cherry Brandy and Cranberry Bitters) which was interesting. The flavour that hit the front of your palette changed by the time it reached your back palette. I didn't mind it. The Clover Club (which was too sweet for my cocktailing like) and a sip of an 18th Amendment (matusalem rum, red wine, violet liqueur, cherry jam, vanilla and nutmeg) a friend ordered, which was easily my pick of the bunch. As for food, try a little or try a lot. The small plates are made to be shared. For our table of 6 we ordered a few of the chips with truffled parmesan (win), beetroot and blue cheese arancini balls (win) with black garlic aioli and baby chard, and my favourite of them all the slow cooked lamb neck, maple roasted pumpkin, fire roasted onions, hazelnut and Maleny yoghurt. Simple flavours that packed a punch when grouped together. Worth every penny of the $19.50 this particular share plate will set you back. There were a few moments where drinks ordered were forgotten or were slow to be delivered but given the patronage on this Wednesday night it was easily forgiven. One bar tender for the number of people in the venue and anyone could understand the minor delays. The staff at Next Door were dear and we were regularly checked on to make sure everything was to our liking. It is the little things.

They light tea candles on your table around dusk. Everyone was very kind and checked on how we were doing periodically. The drinks tended to take a little time to be delivered. We weren't sure if it was because of lack of staff or slow service. Once the drinks were delivered, all was forgiven. The food was excellent as well! We tasted the gangster wings, truffle parmesan fries, beetroot and blue cheese arancini, black garlic aioli, baby chard, and slow cooked lamb neck, maple roasted pumpkin, fire roasted onions, hazelnut, and maleny yogurt. Best thing you ask? LAMB. No question. It was so tender and the roasted pumpkin was an amazing compliment. I could have devoured the entire place but since we are to share the plates- I did just that. I recommend the fries if you want a nice appetizer to share or a comfort food with a twist. The place was quite crowded on a Wednesday and I loved the 1920s theme. This would be a fun place to go on a date or take a friend. It was fun seeing all sorts of groups coming. The beer took forever to arrive but we were told it was due to having to change over the keg, which is understandable but would have been nice to be told that initially. The waiter was European and well spoken, providing solid service. We ordered a share platter of cured meats, olives, gherkins and super thinly sliced bread that was so crispy and delicious I was lovin life!! Our mains were pan seared barramundi with macadamia couscous which for a delightful twist, wasn't couscous at all, it was crushed and toasted macadamia nuts with pepitas adding a sexy texture tango with the fish and side of roasted brussel sprouts... And rump steak medium rare with smokey mash and creamy jus that you'd propose to if you could. All in all it was a stellar meal and I'd love to go back another time to get into the cocktail list, possibly one afternoon to take advantage of the views and perhaps with a bit more atmosphere.

A tasty BBQ sauce was a great accompaniment to the pork although I did find the pork a little fatty and would have liked it cooked just slightly longer to be caramalised more. The egg on the caeser salad was perfectly cooked and the bacon crispy and just a drizzle of dressing. Really well constructed. The potatoes? Roasted but not crispy but still Yum! This is definitely the spot for an extended lunch in the sun & I keep telling myself I must come back and check out the Euro restaurant proper as this is the second time I've walked through to get to another feature of the Urbane group.

I really liked the bread throughout the night (and it came up in several dishes), and the Spanish bruschettas were good for that reason. The calamari came with basil and tomatoes, and the dish kind of reminded me of something in Chinese cuisine. The calamari was not overly chewy, and the basil complemented, but it didn't stand out in any way. Next, we had the Southern Style Buffalo Wings, which wasn't exactly in buffalo sauce, a bit on the oily side, and just wasn't very flavorful for the most part. The skin was nice and crispy, but the flavor didn't quite hit the spot. One of the better plates of the night was the Sauteed Tiger Prawns, which came with the crusty bread that I liked. They were in a chili, garlic, white wine, and olive oil sauce, but again, I couldn't quite taste the spices - something I'm typically pretty good at. The prawns, however, did taste fresh - no fishiness, with a nice crunch, so I was actually a bit impressed. Since their service was terribly slow that night - their trick to not serving as much for the AYCE - we didn't get to try everything we wanted, so we ended with the Thai Chicken Spring Rolls and the Salt Cod Brandade. The spring rolls were average - the skin a bit too hard, and the filling a bit dry. The ratio was just a bit off, so the spring rolls came off a little dry, but the lime aoli balanced it out. Again, there wasn't any flavor to the spring rolls itself, but the aoli did add that punch of flavor. Possibly the best dish of the night (tying with the prawns), was the brandade, which is pretty much a salt cod and olive oil dip eaten with bread. I could taste the cod, which wasn't fishy, and I think it was mixed in with mashed potatoes, which I liked. Again, it came with bread... Overall, this place is very average. Each plate on the tapas menu averages 17AUD, which can add up quite quickly, and the service was pretty terrible...(the waitresses seemed a bit cold and barely ever tended to the table). I liked the fact that it was an open air restaurant, but so are all the other restaurants along James Street! In other words, I probably wouldn't return...

Maybe it's just that it has some fierce competition in its close vicinity and I guess that's the nature of James street. For example, if I wanted a drink I'd be more likely to choose Cru, if I wanted dinner I'd pick Harvey's next door, and if I wanted coffee I'd choose Jamie's. However, what does help Luxe stand out is their lovely wooden bench seating out the front and the fact that they're right next door to the cinemas. So if you want a snack or some tapas and a drink outside of regular meal hours if you've just seen or are about to see a movie, Luxe is a very convenient option. The decor is very nice, and the service is usually pretty reliable. Luxe's strength is really the fact that it's an all-rounder. Although it doesn't excel at a particular meal (ie breakfast, lunch, or dinner) or drink (coffee or cocktails), they do all of these to an adequate standard and in a pleasant environment. And when the other restaurants are between menus, Luxe always has tapas and mezze platters available so they're a good option at an irregular meal time. Nothing wrong with being an all-rounder!
