Ybor City,1967. As I followed my dad snaking through a dark warehouse that exuded a delicious tabacco smell,I felt like I was in a movie . In the 1960s my father worked for Victor Posner. One of his 121 companies was a cigar manufacturer. My father wholesaled to Jobbers that in turn sold to restaurants,retail outlets and cigar shops. As a result we were in Ybor City to secure more orders. As we turned a dark corner in the warehouse we came to a door. When dad opened it, I smelled a strong coffee smell mixed with a cloud of cigar smoke. Here I should regress. When I was very young,my grandmother introduced me to coffee. So,at about 6 I would enjoy a cup in the afternoon with my grandmother as she smoked a cigarette. That initial coffee tabaco exposure set me up perfectly for what I was about to experience. I was deep into a different world watching as a short man pulled a strong Cuban coffee for my dad. Back slaps and hugs all around,I felt like it was the holidays. I was offered what I soon found out was a Pastelitos de Guayava y Queso. Basically a highly revered Cuban puff pastry filled with Guava paste and cream cheese. After some chit chat with translation for some in the room not speaking English,my dad handed out several boxes of samples,shook some hands and we headed for the door. As it was opened for us to exit,dad received a brown paper bag which he placed in our ice chest. Come to find out later in my life this paper bag contained a bundle of Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona. Later in life I smoked cigars but never had the opportunity to experience a Cuban cigar in the hay day. I drove back through this area of Ybor City in 1998 but nothing was as I remember. Ybor City is one of those places that reflects exactly what you bring into it. It can feel sleazy and chaotic if that is what you focus on. It can turn into a full blown Saturday night party scene with flashing lights and packed sidewalks. Or it can be light, bright, interesting, and genuinely fun if you approach it with curiosity and a plan. My friends and I had a great time. The four of us found a very reasonably priced Airbnb close to Ybor, split the cost, and kept the weekend affordable, which mattered to all of us. We are at that stage of life where people are changing jobs, moving homes, shifting states, and recalibrating priorities. Being in this age group comes with both opportunity and instability, so we are all a bit more cost conscious right now, and this setup worked perfectly. Our main reason for being there was to go to Funny Bone, right in the heart of Ybor, but we intentionally walked the strip during the day first so we could see the area before the nightlife really kicked in. During daylight hours, you can appreciate the historic architecture, the energy building, and the mix of shops and restaurants without the late night intensity. By Saturday night, it was a different story. The later it got, the busier it became. Nightclubs and bars filled up, lines stretched down the sidewalks, and police cars were clearly present to manage the crowds. Some people who have not been to Ybor recently might describe it as dangerous. I would say it depends entirely on your comfort level and your expectations. If you are uncomfortable with crowds, loud music, and a heavy party atmosphere that ramps up around 1 or 2 a.m., you will probably want to wrap up your night before midnight. The lines outside the clubs grow long, the sidewalks get packed, and the energy shifts from casual to full throttle. Personally, I felt safe the entire time. I was with a group, we were aware of our surroundings, and nothing felt out of control. Having spent most of my life in downtown Los Angeles, this did not feel extreme to me at all. It felt like a typical entertainment district on a Saturday night. Ybor is not one dimensional. It is layered. It can be gritty. It can be vibrant. It can be chaotic. It can be charming. Ybor City is pretty cool with a historic look. The brick streets and old buildings are nice to look at. It's a nice spot for cafes and walking around during the day. It does get crazy at night though. The nightlife here is wild! Castle Ybor always has something fun to offer. read more

TDY in Tampa, and having brought my sweet Momma along for the trip, Momma and I visited Ybor City one late afternoon/early evening and enjoyed ourselves! We were both so excited to have reservations at Columbia Restaurant and couldn't wait to enjoy their house-mad famous sangria! Our time at Columbia was wonderful, as we enjoyed a leisurely delicious dinner, watching the lovely entertaining flamenco dancers, and purchasing Columbia's beautiful ceramic pitchers and packets of sangria mix in their gift shop to take home for ourselves and as gifts. We browsed the various shops in Historic Ybor City including several cigar shops. I can still recall the rich cigar smells! Our visit was short, as it was primarily for dinner. Why no fifth star? I saw several large rats as we perused the retail shops (inside and outside the shops) across from Columbia and that really grossed me out! read more

Ybor City was suggested by many people as a place to check out while in Tampa. We hopped on the trolley and got off at their stop which makes it easily accessible from downtown. This area is known for its Latin roots, and reminds me of New Orleans. Plenty of tattoo shops, cigar shops, drinking establishments and clubs. I'm once again amazed by the range of positive and negative reviews for Ybor City. The area does appear to have a rich history, but it is overshadowed by how run down and loud it is. We enjoyed our cigars at Sterling, a roof top bar that had a duet playing jazzy / funky 70s hits. Also, Cheeseology looked interesting, offering cheese-making classes. But that's about all the good I have to say about Ybor City. It's a sketchier version of Bourbon Street, at best. It's dirty, with homeless and modified muffler automobiles and loud, obnoxious music forced at you, like a middle finger. Most people don't like that. I don't plan of ever returning. We stayed at Hotel Haya and the street was incredibly loud until at least 2 am and then they start up again the next day, ruining everyone's shared experience. read more

Ybor City is a unique community rich with history and a variety of sights and sounds. As others have mentioned, coming here at night is a very different experience, and I felt safer in the daytime and in a larger group. Visiting the Saturday Farmers' Market was a lot of fun. Vendor prices seemed high to me for some average to low quality merch, but I imagine vendors vary depending on the time of year. The salsa music mixed in the air with roosters vocalizing makes for a memorable experience. It almost felt like we stepped onto a period piece movie set. We took time to visit the museum near Centennial Park, and it's small but worthwhile to get a full appreciation for the diverse culture of Ybor City. And a quick tip: Use the museum bathrooms or go to a local restaurant or bar. The bathroom at Centennial Park is so disgusting, and sadly, it looks like people are sleeping in the stalls at night. As a visitor from Chicago, the chickens roaming were a hoot to see! As soon as we entered the parking lot, a couple of the wild, protected fowl ran past us, and you could hear constant crowing near the park. Columbia restaurant was clearly a popular spot. The food, decor and little gift shop were pricey but worth the visit. For me, Ybor City is a "been there; done that" kind of experience. This is a sweet spot to party. So many restaurants and bars down the strip that you can go in and check out. They have parking lots so it's to leave on the lot and just walk around. It's pretty active during the night. The restaurants turn into bar scenes and bump up the music. read more

I did the free walking tour that was on the Yelp events and it was so cool to learn about the history of Ybor City. The tour kind of jump started me into learning even more about Ybor City and Tampa. It was also awesome to see the interconnectivity of the information I learned at the Henry B Plant Museum and the Ybor City State Park/Museum. I live coming to the Saturday market at the park as it's a great way to buy local and get fresh ingredients. Most people come to Ybor though for the bars and nightlife. I personally like Zydeco because they have live music, great food and great drinks. I also like Acropolis Greek Taverna and 7th & Grove which is black-owned. There really is something different for everyone though starting at the entrance gate to Ybor all the way down to the iconic Columbia restaurant. If you like cigars or distilleries or going out to the clubs, that is the majority of Ybor after dark. There are a few places you can take kids though if you're there during the day. Ybor can be really wild at night so I'd say don't bring the kids after dark. The police are almost always present especially since people often race down the main strip. They are still developing though and adding new restaurants and lounges so I think it will be interesting to see what Ybor becomes. read more

The first time I visited Ybor was around 2015, we decided to walk around and enjoy the night life everyone kept mentioning to us. With all honesty, I was afraid, I felt extremely unsafe. Even walking, some junky almost punched me, RANDOMLY! We just went back to Tampa this week, June 2021, and decided to drive through Ybor, during the day of course. We noticed they have cleaned the location up a bit. New restaurants, stores, and even new apartment buildings. But Ybor, is still filled with junkies, homeless and mentally I'll individuals. Maybe in a few more years it will be better. It's great for bars, cigar shops, tattoo parlors and restaurants, but ALL during the day, I would never go at night. Ybor has a beautiful history to it, there are tours offered to those that are interested in learning more. read more

I can't in good conscience recommend to anyone that a visit to this city would be warranted. I know that it's rich in history, and there are people who say that this is like a mini New Orleans, and if that's true, then I have no interest in visiting New Orleans. Granted; there's the cute chickens/roosters scattered around, but that doesn't compensate for the safety concerns we had during our very brief visit. Also the fact that finding parking here was next to impossible. Most lots would only accept parking if you parked the entire day. A lot of homeless and intoxicated individuals walking around asking for money. The city is just grimey and reminiscent of a ghost town during the day. I don't get the allure at all. read more

Yesterday (12/27/20), I had the opportunity to visit and experience Ybor City, a historic district northeast of downtown Tampa. Ybor (pronounced "EE-bore"), founded in 1886, is arguably one of Tampa's most celebrated neighborhoods - I guess it depends who you ask ;) The now artsy neighborhood makes for an interesting visit as empty cigar factories + historic social clubs have been transformed into art galleries, coffee shops, boutique shops, restaurants, tattoo parlors and nightclubs. Unfortunately due to COVID, many of the places are closed (hopefully not for good). The reason for 4 stars is because the neighborhood isn't kept well -dirty and people who live here just don't seem to give AF. It's sad because it has so much potential with its art, personality and one of a kind shops and mom n pop restaurants. There are lots of great places for instagrammable photo ops - I took a kicking pic in front of the mural - just for kicks, I'd love to see your version :) Overall, Ybor City is worth exploring and experiencing. read more

Ybor city circa 1993, We were riding down 7th ave in a 80's Chevy Caprice with limo tinted windows smoking a left hand cigarette. Just after the area now known as Centro Ybor on the north side of 7th was a parking lot. Two cars passed each other in the lot and gunfire rang out. They were shooting at each other! We crapped our pants and peel'd out burning the tires as we escaped the chaos. Well a lot has changed in 28 years, and some things haven't. Sant Yago Night parade during Gasparilla, drunks puking in the alleys, booty contests that turn into stripteases, Flaming gay men in feather boas, the Colombia, and the ever present hobos making palm frond crosses and panhandling on the sidewalks. The smells, food, bars galore, people watching, shopping,dining, movies, arcades; Ybor has it all. The shine has worn off all the upgrades Ybor has received over the years, the trolleys, building Centro, etc. After all this time, there's still an element of mystery. Anyone ever go to a secret Ybor city underground party? A party in the tunnels the mafia built ages ago? No well that's ok you're probably from New jersey and they's never let that accent in a confined space! J/k Jersey you're great. Anyways if you find yourself drunk at 3am on a Sunday morning finally getting to bed and the spouse ask what happened. Just say"Ybor", nuff said. read more

I've Lived in Florida most of my life and never been to Ybor I heard all kinds of great stuff through the years. Honestly I expected a whole bunch more than tattoo parlors and head shops. I guess it's a night life place, maybe when your drinking and it's dark you will see it through beer googles. The several dirty bums sleeping on the sidewalks were a turn off too. The only oasis on this street is the Columbia Restaurant. It's the Crown Jewel and a total class act. Professional wait staff, good food wonderful atmosphere. read more

Lots of the bars had karaoke going on Friday night which had huge crowds and participation for. Super fun to just watch if your not into singing. Fun historic city that is being revitalized. Honestly, I have no idea how long this review will be relevant. I was recently on a food tour and the guide mentioned how an entity has swooped in and purchased a lot of the land/buildings. Nobody knows the plans for these buildings, so there are a ton of possibilities. The guide did say that it would probably take a couple of years for the construction to finish, so maybe this review will be helpful for at least a couple years. Before the food tour, I saw Ybor city as a drinking destination. I've been here for a bachelorette and also for a day drinking extravaganza. It is definitely a party spot at night. Since there are so many bars and restaurants that serve alcoholic beverages, this is the perfect spot for day drinking. It's not weird at all to be sipping margaritas at 1 p.m. on a Sunday. If you're looking for an area to bar hop or have a progressive meal, this is a good choice. There are both parking lots and garage parking. I'm partial to the parking garage, because you pay at the end, whereas with the parking lot you have to guess how long you'll be there at the beginning. The parking lots win out on the weekends, however, because they are free! If you go during the day, you'll notice that Ybor City isn't the cleanest of towns. There are also a fair share of homeless people. Just be aware of your surroundings. Nothing bad has ever happened to me, but I have been catcalled a couple times in broad daylight. Think about how much worse it gets at night. After going on the food tour, I have a deeper appreciation for the history behind Ybor City. If you are a history buff, I would definitely suggest doing a bit of research on the area. It is quite fascinating. I list Ybor City as high on my list to bring people when they visit if they want to drink. It doesn't disappoint. read more

I had opportunity to drive around Ybor city after having dinner at Columbia restaurant, it is really big and there are a lot of bars and restaurants in this store et. There were a lot of security and police which was good because there are a lot of bars and anything can happen. There were a lot of lights decorated which was really beautiful. I was there on a Friday night and it was really packed everywhere and they had the music up a lot of the restaurants too.
