A nice bar that you can chill and enjoy a cold pint of beer at a really good price. What makes this bar special is their food. Onion rings, tachos and their burger are highly recommended. I was very surprised by the unexpected high quality of their food. I even go to this bar just for their burger and onion rings. They also have a shuffleboard, a pool table, darts, pinball machines. Jennifer the bartender is simply the best. Awesome pinball selection. Star Trek, X-Men Wolverine Limited Edition, and Walking Dead. 2$ for 3 plays what a steal for hours of fun. Sunday is BURGER night where you get a 1/2 lb burger for $1.50 with toppings for 50 cents each. The greatest with their rockin tots of course. Their beers on tap seem to rotate at least once a month. Ye Olde doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't judge a book by its cover and step inside for a good time. Used to live in Royal Oak for a couple years and Ye Olde was one of the places I would frequently visit. I come back once in awhile for work and always make a point to stop by here. They've got a great rotating selection of craft beers, as well as the standard fare, but what really makes Ye Olde stand out are the tots and burgers. You haven't had tots until you've had them here, so crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and seasoned to perfection. Ask for the tatchos (nachos based tots). Something must've changed recently as it's not as crispy or plump as in the past, but it's still worth getting. The burgers are made using fresh beef from Eastern Market, so juicy and full of flavor. Make it your way with a varied selection of toppings. Go on Sundays for the best deal, $1 for the burger and 50-75 cents for toppings, comes out to around $4 bucks for an amazing burger. You can't beat a bar that has table scuffle board. The saloon works on any night for any number of people. Sundays offer $1 (additional costs per topping) that is a really-good-bar-burger. Mondays have a similar $1 hot dog night and Tuesdays are taco night. They also have scotch eggs (if you have never tried it you need to) that come with tots and saloon sauce. The staff/service is good. Orders are quick and get to the right person. The food does take a bit of time, especially if you have a large group such as a Monday night kickball team, since there is only a small grill and fryer. For quite some time now, a buddy and myself have been talking about meeting up after work one day for some cocktails. Our schedules finally aligned for the opportunity to present itself. I've only been in Michigan for about five months now, and i really haven't had the time or opportunity to explore my new surroundings. Ye Olde Saloon was the bar of choice for this, our first "after work" outting. Overall, i had a really good time and the 2 drinks i had, were kick ass. My 1 and only complaint is.... when i was ordering food, i specifically asked the bartender how the chicken that comes on the chicken nachos was prepared -- whether it comes shredded or chopped? Since her answer was shredded, i ordered the Chicken nachos. When i received the food i noticed the chicken was chopped into chucks. When i brought this to the attention of the bartender she debated it was only that one piece of meat. When i tried showing her that every piece of chicken in this dish was chopped in chunks and not shredded, she moved on to the next customer, not being bothered with what i was talking about. read more

Man.. stopped in on a Wednesday. Can't believe the amount of attention the staff gives you despite the fact they are horribly understaffed! The bar service was spot on, despite the necessary shift between customers. Kitchen service was prompt and food was delicious, but even more amazing given the fact that he was working solo! Food was perfect and spot on for flavor and texture! I feel as though the place was understaffed, but the employees I met made the most of it, giving their time to each of us best they could. Oh my gosh. I have no idea why I JUST stepped foot in this place recently. I love dive bars and this one is great. My favorite part of this place was how delicious the food was. For a tiny little bar, the cook behind the bar was super into what he was cooking and did it with enthusiasm. The hot dogs and nachos were both delicious. The employees were nice and the atmosphere was my jam. I also can't forget to mention that they have their own private parking lot which is hard to find in this area and something I noticed immediately. This place is awesome. Take it for what it is, a neighborhood bar with fun people and really great food. We had the Ye Old Signature Burger and the Beef Totchos, both were delicious. The Ye Old Signature Burger is SERIOUSLY one of the best burgers I have ever had and I'm gonna say it right now, the BEST burger I've had in all of metro Detroit. Lemme explain: Perfect moist and buttery bun, delicious flavorful meat, smoked gouda, bacon, tomato jam, and a black pepper & horseradish aioli (or something close to that). I organize an informal gathering for my former Social Work classmates every few months, and I decided on Ye Olde Saloon for the latest event after consulting with Yelp. I am super glad I did, because we had a great time on a Friday night! I didn't pay too much attention to the actual location until I was driving there, because I saw "Main St. Royal Oak" and assumed it was further up Main St. I was very happy when I arrived to find a parking lot with plenty of parking. I found my group easily sat up front, and was grateful for the warm greeting from our server. Drinks are well-made and priced reasonably - we tried the Moscow Mule on tap and found it to be tasty, and quite strong! They have a great selection of beers on tap in addition to the full bar. Food is also really good - it's burgers, sandwiches, and appetizers, with the highlight for me being the chicken totchos! I always brake for totchos. You definitely should try them, because they were crispy and held up well under the toppings. Yum! Our group topped out at about 8 people, and our server was great about keeping our tabs separate. We learned that when she starts the tabs, you have to pay them as they are and you can't combine them. No problem at all for us, but it might something worth mentioning for groups. After logging in much time watching the British sitcom Peep Show, my man was soon on the hunt for something called Scotch eggs. Hard-boiled eggs wrapped in sausage then battered and fried sounded like handfuls'a heaven to him! On a quest to procure said layered delight, we learned that Ye Olde Saloon has them and I smiled. This place is the anti-status-quo Royal Oak bar...I bet puka shell necklaces and Ed Hardy would poof into smoke on contact! The decor is kitsch perfection. Made to look like the inside of a barn complete with mural horses in stalls, wooden beams and lanterns also abound. There's a shuffleboard table, pool, fun pinball games, and I was delighted to find a Multicade game complete with Frogger! Uncle Butch loved his Scotch eggs served with yummy "pub sauce", and they even had a tasty veggie burger for me! The chick behind the bar was an attentive sweetheart, and due to happy hour and "Beer o' the Month", my Coronas were $1.50 and colder'n Frosty's nuts! This place is kind of divey, but not super divey. I feel like it's pretty underrated in terms of quality. Their draft beer list always affords a good selection of craft brews. The food is quite good. Do not be fooled by the atmosphere - I've had some really good meals here. My fiancée and I split a club sandwich the other day. It was one of the best club sandwiches we've ever had. It's not your traditional triple-decker, processed turkey, garbage sandwich. It was on two slices of bread, but the turkey was real, thicker-cut turkey. Not sure everything that went into the creation of that sandwich, but it was noticeably better than your normal club. As other people have alluded to, Sunday is $1 Burger Day. If you only want to spend $1, you'll end up with a plain ass burger, but you can upgrade that bad boy with just about everything you'll need and keep it around the $4 mark. A fried egg and bacon are two of the more premium upgrades, but well worth it in my book. I think I had a Mozzarella, Bacon, Fried Egg burger and it was quite good. I think it set me back about $3.50 although I can't remember exactly. Two things I don't like about the place - the logistics of the men's room and the way that the bar top has about a 8" slanted piece that comes down from the bar. Wow!! I just got whisked back into a far away place... my childhood! I'm sure you think that sounds pretty weird considering i'm reviewing a bar, but this isn't just any bar. This is the bar I grew up in. Yep, no shit. I am not sure what color it is now, but for years and years it was baby shit green with piss yellow trim. I remember how it looked BEFORE THAT! It was brown with cream trim.. Same funny looking guys, same horses.. Same ole same ole Ye Olde... heh.. My mom started working here in 1978 when I was 3 years old. Although I was not quite a "regular" at that ripe ole age, I would be in 1981, when I was 6. Don't see many kids in bars anymore. Ha!! the times they are a-changin'! A lot of the reviews talk about the shuffleboard. It's probably the same one my Uncle Mike sold them from North American Interstate in the late 70s. He also sold them a cig machine, 2 pinball machines, and a jukebox. I'm sure those are all gone now. It's nice to hear the shuffleboard is there still. My mom is one of the sketches on the wall. So are a few others that I remember; her boyfriend Ray, a barmaid named Lori, and a barmaid named Linda. I remember the boss back then, Bob. He was also a lawyer so if you got busted for DUI after drinking in his bar, he would defend you. Bob passed away many years ago, as did my mom. RIP. They all looked after me. I would come in after a long hard day of 2nd grade over at St. Mary's Royal Oak on Lafayette and oftentimes stay until past closing, sleeping in the back office. I could play pinball for hours with just one quarter, albeit, standing on a chair. There used to be a guy named Jerry that came in, he was a.k.a. Pinball Wizzard... I gave him a run for his money a few times. I was 7, he was in his 40s. I remember my mom having her 40th birthday party there in 1981. I remember she got all embarrassed over some wierd shaped thing she got that she wouldn't let me see. Now of course I know it was a vibrator, a gag gift from one of her friends. I remember the food and the Shirley Temples (xtra cherries please) and learning to play backgammon, and dominoes. I remember having to hide in the back office if the cops had to come, since I wasn't supposed to be in after 9, but often my mom had no choice for lack of sitters (or money for one). I know this isn't your standard every day bar review, and won't help you decide if they pour a good shot, but i'm glad to do it, and re-live some good *and maybe age inappropriate* memories. I wish I could give this place less then 1 star. I wish I could give it less then no stars. I've been here more than once and have never been that impressed, but my most recent trip sealed the deal. I will never return and I will tell all that I know to stay away. A friend and I went here a few nights ago and I started a tab and he payed cash for his drinks. Little did I know that the bartender was putting all of our drinks on my tab and taking my friends cash for his drinks at the same time. When it came time to cash out I got the bill and saw what was going on. When I asked about it I was told it was all right and nobody would hear me or my friend out. As far as they were concerned we were too drunk to know what was going on and was told to pay and leave or they would call the cops. It's a poorly run business and I will never return so some bartenders can retire early with a great scam. read more

This is consistently the best bar in Royal Oak. If you've ever been out in Royal Oak and couldn't seem to get away from the "BlackFinn crowd" or couldn't find a bar with a bathroom where you DON'T have to tip the strange man / woman standing in there waiting for you to get done so they can offer you a paper towel and a mint, then Ye Olde is the place for you. Bartenders / Servers are experienced and great at what they do (which makes all the difference in the world). Drinks are strong (unlike most other bars we go to around there), and the food is GREAT for "bar food". We also go there for their Sunday $1 Burgers, and you'd expect a crappy dry, tasteless burger for $1, but it's not at all - WAY better than the $6-$7 burger you're going to get somewhere else. Go once, and it'll turn into an every week trip. Plus this place has a shuffle board table. I went there yesterday with my boyfriend and his brother around 6pm. I know some of this might have to do with the fact that it was well into opening day at this point, but I wasn't satisfied with my experience at all. We got there, had our ids checked and found a table. Sat around for a while as waitresses walked past us not thinking to check in. I finally got up to to the bar to ask for menus. Maybe another five minutes later a waitress came. Everything was fine with that. They ordered the burgers, and I had ordered three of the cantina tacos and the scotch egg/tots for the appetizer. Food took a while to come out, and the appetizer came out after our meals did... I wish I could tell you that the tacos were good, but they were cold. The tortillas felt and tasted like they were literally pulled from the fridge and then had filling placed on top. It's difficult to eat cold corn tortillas because they break very easily. The boys said their burgers were decent. The scotch egg was just ok. I expected the meat around the egg to be seasoned or something, it tasted more like they just wrapped the hamburger meat you get at the grocery store around the egg and called it a day. The atmosphere was probably a bit more rowdy than it normally would be due to the opening day festivities, but needless to say, I wouldn't recommend getting the food here. If you're looking to drink and have that kind of fun with friends I'm sure its alright. But otherwise, eat somewhere else first. read more

This is the absolute WORST bar I have ever been to. If there was a 0 star option, that is what I would choose. There food is absolutely horrible. I ordered the nachos and they came out completely cold, I requested them to be warmed up and I was told they would be placed back in the oven and they came out again cold on the same plastic plate that they were originally served on. The service was horrendous and the waitress was completely clueless. We waited over an HOUR for the shuffleboard after politely requesting a turn from the people in front of us. When we finally asked them again if it was our turn to play, they took the pucks with them and complained to the bartender that we were being rude. The bartender not only refused to listen to us but had the audacity to ask us to leave (of course only after making us pay our bill by holding an ID hostage). I've been coming here for a few weeks now, and I have to say it's one of my new favorites. The other reviews pretty much cover the atmosphere. It's a divey type bar, but not too bad. It's comfortable. The crowd varies quite a bit. The food here is pretty typical bar-type munchies, but everything i've had has been really good. The fried zucchini is out of this world. I hear the burgers are top notch too, but i'm a vegetarian so I don't really give a shit! They've got a shuffleboard, pinball, an arachnid dart board that sometimes works, and of course golden tee. The best part of this bar by FAR is the staff. Everyone is super friendly and knows their shit. Michelle is easily the best! Just don't pick any shitty songs on the juke box, or else you'll piss them all off and they will skip your song! read more

I came in here for a lunch break once and it was very understaffed. There was a woman working the bar and the kitchen, (mind that there were at least 7 patrons including myself) which I thought was very impressive. Her attitude was very uplifting and motivated which is very refreshing to see these days. I ordered three drinks and a burger. Oh, Ye Olde, how I love thee (thou?). Eh, whatever. This place rocks! Let me tell you why.... Ye Olde is a dive bar located a couple blocks outside of downtown Royal Oak. You can still walk from downtown but the beauty of this is that they have FREE parking aka a private parking lot. So you don't have to circle around and around like a vulture to find a parking space or worry about throwing more quarters in the meter even at prime times. They have your typical fried bar food that was mentioned in the other reviews. The digital juke box, darts, pool, and FREE shuffle board(!!!) is always a treat. Go during a local game and they have really nice drink specials. The staff is always cool and easy going. One time, this drunk dude would not stop talking to my friend and I. We told the bartender we were going to kick his ass so she gave us doubles for putting up with him. We didn't and it was appreciated! My suggestion....DON'T go on the weekend as it gets very crowded with retarded out of area retards. Yep, they are double retarded. During the week you can usually get a seat at the bar and don't have to wait for shuffleboard or darts. My ONLY gripe and you can't blame the establishment....there's no eye candy. The crowd was much better, although it was really packed on a Saturday night - barely standing room. The service was nice at the bar; quick and friendly, and the prices were cheap. If you want to feel like you're drinking in the movie Mary Poppins, you should come to Ye Olde Saloon. Not only does the name Ye Olde Saloon make you want to talk in a cockney accent a la Dick Van Dyke, there are horse murals on the walls that look just like the horses from Mary Poppins. Now that is really the most negative thing I will say about Ye Olde (I'm really not a big fan of Mary Poppins, and I especially disliked the animated horses). As I've mentioned before, I adore dive bars, and Ye Olde, or YO, can definitely be classified as a dive. YO has cheap beer, good specials, and an awesome shuffle board! Yesssssss! One night we shared the shuffle board with another group, and while we were waiting for our turn, we did rounds of quarters. The waitress was in full support of this, bringing us shorter glasses and helping us find an ideal table to bounce quarters off of. Good thing that we were playing with separate beer glasses, as YO is definitely not the type of place where you'd want to put something in your mouth after dropping it on the floor. Anyway, staff here will go above and beyond to make sure you have a fun time. The only other negative comment I have is that there bathrooms remind me of "The Shining." Seriously! Ye Olde is one of the dirtiest, stinkiest and cheapest dive bars I've ever been to, and I absolutely love it! You will leave smelling like a ashtray/deep fryer hybrid - so when you go home separate your clothes from all your other laundry - the smell travels. The food is great. Greasy, trans fatty and everything you want out of bar food. Pitchers, drafts and even bottles are cheap and shots are as well (and they're real shots too, not skimpy wuss girl shots). Parking is easy, their lot is a pretty good side, although on the weekends after 10 it's gets hard to find a spot. Wednesdays there's a great band that plays covers (Jack Johnson, Grateful Dead and even Poison if you ask nicely). Darts, Shuffleboard, those computer trivia thingies, boxing and a KILLER jukebox that is loud enough to actually hear the music. Bartenders are friendly, but prefer regulars, so take a whole 2 minutes out of your impending drunkeness to say hi and ask her your name, she'll be your friend after that. I will ALWAYS prefer a grimy bar with a lot of loud characters and a decent jukebox over an extra-clean bar with a bunch of tvs and specialty cocktail menus designed girls who just turned 21. So when a friend recommended Ye Olde Saloon to me, I was pretty skeptical. "They have dollar burgers on Sunday" was the reply. I would be a stubborn fool to ignore that suggestion. Pulling up to the restaurant, I was prepared to be disappointed.The bar sits at the edge of the downtown district, in a pretty unremarkable building. That's a good sign, I thought to myself. When my eyes adjusted to the darkness after walking in, I was feeling even better. With a few goofy murals, a sparse barely-western theme, and a central bar/kitchen area between the two rooms, there's not a whole lot to this place except a lot of room to move around. They spruce it up a bit with a free shuffleboard table (nice!) and a bunch of pinball machines, the electronic game choice of winners. The crowd was varied - from the group of twenty-something guys playing poker, to a few middle-aged men at the bar watching hockey, to groups of people like us looking for a cheap beer and a cheap burger. We stopped in for a little food and some drinks after a lovely afternoon in Royal Oak. If you assume this is a dive bar by its outer appearance, you are correct! The inside is even more deliciously dive bar-y than the outside. If you assume a dive bar like this couldn't possibly have good food, you are incorrect! The burgers here are well-seasoned and higher quality than their price may indicate. Some of the additions to the build-your-own burger are better than average, like pico de gallo. The fries are regular frozen but good. The bartender was busy while still giving you personal attention. My husband and I stopped here after a disappointing venture to purchase a car. Needless to say we were grumpy. After a couple of the on special dollar beers and cheeseburgers we were good as new! The burgers are so good! Perfectly pink in the middle and a little crisp on the outside, just the right amount of pickles. The fries are the thick kind and the cheese sauce they had for dipping was awesome. Basically i'm sad we hadn't stopped in here sooner. And next time i'm bringing quarters to play AC/DC pinball! One of the best burgers you'll ever eat. On Sundays, they're a buck. The chicken and waffles are tits. The corned beef Sammie is one of my favs, and the French dip is good too. You can get tots. Napolean loves tots, and if you don't, you're an asshole. This also isn't a fruity frou frou drink place. You won't get orange peels and all that dumb shit. Get a shot and a beer. Then repeat that ten times. Katie is the best. She's sweet, but doesn't take shit. They also have shuffleboard and darts. And a pool table. So there's lots of activities. If this doesn't sound rad, go buy a fifteen dollar beer at some lame ass craft beer hall, and leave cool people like me alone. read more

Stopped in here tonight for the first time to meet a friend for a drink. I should say that I am a big fan of a good dive bar and I totally loved the place. I don't go out in Royal Oak much at all because I find that most of the places are crazy over priced and a bit too snobby for my taste. But I really loved the relaxed atmosphere of Ye Olde Saloon. Unfortunately we did not order any food because we were not hungry and I didn't even check out the menu, so I cannot comment at all on that at the moment. The only reason they are getting four stars and not five is because both my friend and I ordered Jameson in a glass with ice. The bartender filled the glass with ice to the top so by the time we finished our whiskey it was pretty much all water. But for the second round we asked for less ice and she happily obliged! Ye Olde- Love / Hate relationship based on the day of the week and the resulting clientele. Big fan of Sunday - Thursday locals' nights. Not so big a fan of brofest amateur hour on the weekends. What goes around comes around for an OG. The food lives and dies by the grillmaster on deck. If it is Mike the bald dude with the big beard you are in competent hands. Sunday's I get my $1 burger - Super Extra Rare X 2 Patties + Grilled Onions + Cheddar Cheese + Pickles finished with Mayo + A-1 Sauce. Sometimes I put an egg or Bacon on it depending on how drunk I am. Their French dip is pretty skimpy on the French and heavy on the Dip. You get this little sandwich and a big soup bowl of Au jus. Put some vodka, Tabasco, and Lea and Perrins in that piece and now you're talking. Another hack worth mentioning is ordering a Dearborn hot dog + Bacon +Grilled onions + finish with Mayo and heavy splashes of Cholua. You got yourself an LA Ghetto Dog. I am a menu Genie. I used to get Moscow Mules here in copper Tito's mugs with Tito's Vodka which was cool and slightly sentimental because I was stationed in the great state of Texas and Tito's Vodka is distilled in Austin and I have raised some hell in that Tex town but some douche bag motherfuckers stole the copper Tito's mugs from the bar. Sometimes things just happen that can make a man want to load up his shotgun and take to the streets for some justice. You just don't go around stealing copper mugs for a man's Moscow mule from his neighborhood bar and not expect repercussions, brother. Check yourself. read more
