I remember listening to the immigration stories during those sessions and crying because so many of them reminded me of my own journey, with all the hardship, loneliness, and the long road it took to start over. Walking through the Holocaust exhibits is something I will never forget. Looking at the photos and reading the captions left me completely heartbroken. The pain is something I can't fully describe. This museum honors people who endured the most unimaginable cruelty, and being there forces you to face that history with your whole heart. I've taken my niece and nephews, and we all felt the same deep sadness and respect. My nephew even had his 8th grade graduation there, which makes the place even more meaningful to me. It's a space filled with memory, grief, resilience, and reflection, and it will always hold a special place in my life. It's also helpful to know that admission is free on Wednesdays, which makes it even easier for people to experience this important and emotional museum.

I visited the American Folk Art Museum for the first time last Sunday before an opera at the Met…read more The museum is teeny tiny but had an interesting exhibit when we visited: "Self-Made: A Century of Inventing Artists" (open through September 13, 2026). The museum's unique focus on folk art makes it interesting to visit despite its size. It's free to visit, so I recommend it for a quick visit if you're already in the neighborhood (Lincoln Center is right across the street), but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit unless they have an exhibit you're very interested in. There is a great little gift shop; since the museum is so small, you can't miss it but save a few minutes to explore it, too.

The museum itself is small and kind of crowded, but they definitely packed a lot of fascinating garments into such a small space. Some of my favorite garments on display at the special exhibit: 1. Issey Miyake's red plastic body bustier from 1983 2. A red silk satin corset from 1889 3. Jack Jacobus high-heeled boots from 1895-1900, gift of the Victoria & Albert Museum 4. Top hats from Books Brothers, Christian Dior (his is corseted!), and Justin Smith 5. A Jean Paul Gaultier orange cone-bra dress 6. Thierry Mugler's mermaid dress 7. A spikey black coat ensemble from Viktor & Rolf 8. A 3D-printed spider dress 2.0 created and engineered by Annouk Wipprecht for INTEL in 2015, in collaboration with Philip H. Wilck (it made me think of the mantis blades from Cyberpunk 2077. There was also a video in the gallery of the "legs" on the shoulders of the dress moving. 9. Chocolate dress 10. Yohji Yamamoto's Fall 2006 rib-shaped Fall ensemble 11. Scarlet Woman (which entails a head-to-toe scarlet ensemble entailing a corset top hat, stiletto heels, corseted skirt, cinched structured coat of silk and lace, wielding a long red belt like a whip) and Horse-woman (head-to-toe grey with a saddle as a bustle) ensembles and gowns by John Galliano for Christian Dior Couture.

There is a street level entrance or you can climb the many stairs. With way you will need to walk through security. The atrium area has always been one of my favorite parts of the building. The glass dome kid incredible. Currently only the permanent exhibits are available for viewing. It is still worthwhile. Admission is free.

One of the best free things to see in New York…read more Just museum is this a Smithsonian museum. It houses, relics and information about all the Native Americans throughout the United States. I was really fascinated to see this because you got to see the local dresses and histories about the Native Americans. I wish there were more exhibits, but to even have a place like this is wonderful. Definitely stop by for a visit when in the financial district it is so worth it.

It's a two-fold reason why the museum charges no admission every Saturday: 1) their intent is to make exhibits accessible to everyone, and 2) this aligns with the principle of no exchange of money on Shabbat. As such, the gift shop and basement cafe are both closed then. A juxtaposition of exhibits, Joan Semmel's work with themes of body and intimacy, is on the ground floor. Interesting! As well as other exhibits that I hadn't previously seen. I was unexpectedly there for a couple of hours. I was pleased to see people of different heritages enjoying the museum. It's a worthwhile visit, and now that it's warming up you might want to stroll through Central Park across the street, afterwards.

The exhibit was well arranged and focused on the political side of his work -- I had not previously understood that he was one of the targets of the Nazi campaign against degenerate art, and many of his works beginning in the early 1930.s first in Germany and then in exile in Switzerland. was devoted to indirect or very direct criticisms of Nazi ideology. we also enjoyed the extensive display of menorahs. I would recommend checking online what the current exhibits are or if there's any special event, prior to going here. Regardless of going to the museum, the gift shop is really nice and heavily recommended, and they have a quaint little cafe with Asian inspired food options. Price: $15 for adults, $10 for seniors/children, and free for members/people under 16 Amount of time: ~2-2.5 hours. More if you want to watch all the short films I have been to this small museum on Park Avenue a handful of times. The place consists of a few floors, accessible via a beautiful staircase or an elevator, with the main floor having an excellent gift shop, a small cafe, a tiny amount of stuff from other exhibitions, and stairs downstairs to go to their theater, which has rotating interesting movies mostly from years ago from a variety of Asian countries, of course. The second floor has the largest section, and either has one large exhibition, or the first/larger half of an exhibition continued upstairs, along with a little theater showcasing short films. The third floor has the remaining half, or other new exhibits, and another room, which is smaller. The most recent time I went there was a week ago. The main exhibition, split between two floors, was Buddha and Shiva, Lotus and Dragon, which appropriately has 70 of their finest works as it is celebrating their 70th anniversary. As can be seen in the photos, this ranged from statues and other relics to beautiful ceramics, among other things. There was also a small section including contributions from Blanchette Rockefeller, and a small collection of recent acquisitions on the third floor. The current short film series is Busy Busy Towns, an alright showcase of stop motion and short documentaries, with the longest one by a mile being a 35-minute short film called Factory by Chen Chieh-jen, produced in 2003. The concept was interesting, but I found it to be a snoozefest. As per last time, it wasn't the longest visit, but it was still nice. This isn't my favorite museum in the city, but it's nice for an afternoon visit. As said, check the current selection to see if you're interested.

Wednesday October 2 2024 how often do you see a collection of Aboriginal Australian bark painting?…read moreOne of the largest such collections in the western hemisphere in the last 30 years Over 70 such paintings displayed at the museum depicting turtles sharks fish kangaroos crocodiles and native people fishing and boating. Behind each painting is a story and a song. Videos of songs with natives dancing on interactive monitors. Bark painting in brown coloring of the bark against an off-white background. There is one painting in blue done with permission from a handicap painter. Paintings divided up between men and women painters women painters tend to paint scenes of domestic life.. This is the first review in Yelp and TripAdvisor on the subject matter, and probably the only review as exhibit was on display for only 3.5 months starting in mid September 2024. Sharks in Australia? Never been to Australia, and this is as close as I will come.

It originally began as a labor of love by the owner, showcasing his eclectic collection of memorabilia in his house window. It's a little bigger now but will only take you 20 minutes to see everything. As others have said, there are no placards to explain the memorabilia or the acquisition process. This would have made the museum much more informative and 5 stars. Still, the peep show machine and the amazing bodega decor on the store outside and lobby is worth seeing. $5 for NYC locals and students, a little more for tourists; not bad!
