Grabbed this for takeout after work one day and really wanted to love it, but unfortunately wasn't too impressed. The hot n sour soup was very good with a dark soy flavor and subtle warmth. The potstickers were fantastic and you could tell were made in house. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the price for just 4. I should've stopped my order there, but I made the mistake of adding some General Chicken. It was made using dark meat which is fine, but the meat itself was very fatty and grisly. The sauce had good flavor, but I couldn't get past the texture of the chicken. I ended up only eat 3-4 pieces and throwing out the rest. Long time customer, but will NEVER GO THERE AGAIN. Usually order out a $150 meal weekly, but because the owner lady who argued with me defensively, instead of taking a quality complaint seriously , I will never return there. I Picked up my huge weekly order for $150, but one item, 'Mixed Vegtables' not up to their usual standard , mostly onions, celery and a few pieces of brocoli ( for $16.00) I called to report the quality failure , and to be fair, half off $8 credit would have solved it for me, but Owner argued that she packed it full of carrots , watercress, etc, ) Owner refused to take feedback from customer, worse treatment I ever had at a restaurant...so I wont continue to bring Mekong my business. 2 hour wait for takeout on NYE. It was worth it though. Ordered veggie spring rolls, they were not greasy and pretty darn good. The Moo Shu vegetable pancakes were sooooooo tasty. It came with a package of "pancakes" aka, tortilla-ish things. Wish it came with more, since we had a lot of filling left over. Lo mein was simple and tasty. I am an onion lover and appreciated the heavy hand that was used with the onions in this dish. Fried rice, no complaints. The hubby loved his general toa's and hunan pork dumplings. They also included various sauces on the side like a black vinegar/soy dipping sauce concoction, which I seriously put on everything, as well as hoisin and sweet and sour sauce. This place is excellent!!! The food is fantastic and authentic with a modern flare. However, I have issue with Yelp and several other review sites as this is not a "Buffet" or an "All you can eat Buffet" restaurant. It is menu order only and therefore Yelp and other review sites are misleading and providing false expectation. If you wish to go to a Buffet where you place the food on to your own plate (As per the definition of buffet), then it is best to confirm with the restaurant directly and ignore Yelp and other review sites that false promote it as such. read more

Reliably consistently delicious food year in, year out. This is not your neighbourhood egg roll & chickenball joint: awesome, generous and delicious plates abound. The best crispy spicy beef ever. Service is friendly and the kitchen accommodating to allergies, sensitivities and preferences. The dining area is spare, but despite the offer of take-away, still the best place to enjoy an amazing meal. A solid 3.5 star dinner with family in a Saturday night. Restaurant had two levels, the ground floor has around 10 tables of various sizes (2 to 6 people) while upstairs can accommodate a large group. The decor and ambiance is nice. Main dishes are in the $16-$20 range and served with steamed rice. Dishes were decent though not spectacular. Crispy beef seems to be one of the most popular dishes but I thought it was disappointing. While it was definitely crispy, the flavour was too heavy in hoisin sauce, and many pieces were simply deep fried dough with little or no beef. Prawns with garlic tamarind chilli paste was not bad, and Mekong fried rice and crispy calamari were good. read more

This is the one resto that I simply must go to on every trip to Ottawa. There's a rumour floating around that I once came here for lunch then returned for dinner... Although it's been more than a few years since I've had the pleasure of dining here the quality of the food is as high as ever. As I arrived shortly before closing, I only had time to order the won ton soup ($5) and the sweet and sour pork ($12 for the half portion). White rice is complimentary. Both arrived at the table within ten minutes. Delightful. Downstairs the decor is done in a muted red shade with Asian character framed prints. Only table seating including a larger round table. Upstairs there are banquettes. So happy that I made it there in time! read more

We find things have changed a bit in the flavours and quantities which is why I'm giving it a 4-star, would have preferred they increased prices and kept same consistency. We made a pit stop in Ottawa for lunch during our road trip to Canada and found Mekong. They have a private parking lot for customers which was super important for us, because the side of the streets were covered with mountain of shoveled deep snow that day and it was next to impossible to find parking. There was only one man working there that day when we got there but service was fast and food came out quickly. We ordered Thai Shrimp Spring rolls, Hunan style pork dumplings in chili peanut sauce, Cripsy Beef, and Deep Fried Five Spices Prawn. Not sure if it was because of the cold weather or the fact that we had been starving but all the warm food was seriously delicious. Goodbye Mekong! Ever since owner Denis sold the business the quality has been inconsistent but the latest owners are trying to save every nickel resulting in bad food and bad experiences. Case in point: I asked for some hot sauce as I always do, but this time they charged me $1 for what was easily just a teaspoon. The eggplant used to come melt-in-your mouth, swimming in a glorious Yu Shiang sauce. The new owners have decided to serve a mostly raw, half cooked (hardish) eggplant with zero sauce, only a minimal coating on the surface. Hero to zero. And the crispy noodle with broccoli and tofu: they forgot the sauce (again!).. if you like an unseasoned noodle that takes like a corn starch paste then you'll love this noodle. Mekong is one of my favourite spots in Ottawa to eat. I take friends there all the time. They simply have GREAT Vietnamese food. So why only 4 out of 5 stars? The answer is one word: inconsistency. I have been to this location over 20 times. And I have to say that about half of those visits are a 5/5 for service, food, and atmosphere alike. The other half have been about 3/5. If Mekong can master consistent output from the kitchen, and consistent care and performance from the wait staff, this place has he potential to be one of the top restaurants in Ottawa. read more

This is, without a doubt, the best provider of Asian cuisine in Ottawa. They do everything, just a bit better. Tonight we had; Vegetable spring rolls: were they tasty...absolutely. They were fresh, crispy and flavorful. The sauce they serve with it is sweet, zesty, and the most unique "spring roll" sauce I've ever had. Chicken Pad Thai: wonderful smokey flavor, and tons of chicken in it Lemon Chicken: every Asian place has lemon chicken. Most give you a microscopic piece of "chicken" wrapped in a ton of batter. Mekong makes the best, most meaty Lemon Chicken I've ever had. I've eaten it at the restaurant twice and been amazed at how tasty it is. When you order it for home, the sauce comes on the side, and you lode no value at all. Best Lemon Chicken in Town. Crispy Beef; I have no clue how they make a beef this crispy with so much flavor. I've eaten crispy beef at 100s of places around the world (it's my favorite Asian dish), but this is special. For me, it's one of the top 3 best single dishes served in Ottawa...period. This is an amazing plate. Steamed rice: I think they steam it with magic...lol In short (too late for that), this is the singe best Asian resto in Ottawa and the quality does not drop an iota if you order it for delivery. There's not really anything wrong with Mekong. As a Chinese food restaurant, I think it fills a niche - basically, for people who want to be in a more "upscale" setting - with the decent Chinese food - BUT without getting into "fusion" territory. The menu is pretty westernized, but the quality of food is not bad. Whether it's worth the money, however, is another question. Personally, I have had similar or better-tasting food for half the price of our meal at Mekong. It's all well and good to be seated in fantastic seats by the corner, in a dimmed restaurant with great decor and ambience... but unfortunately, I'm not sure I'll be back again. read more

I've been a fan of this place for a very long time and have always had a great meal and experience whether in a group of 20, or just 2 To many good things on their menu to mention anything in particular, except for the fact that Hot and Sour soup is always consumed. read more

In Ottawa to visit my kid brother and when Chinese food was mentioned, he recommended Mekong for dinner. He claimed it 's the best in Ottawa. Now I'm a little skeptical, given the fact that Ottawa's Chinatown isn't much to write home about but I'll trust my bro's judgement. Upon entering Mekong, I noticed two things that was out of the ordinary for a good Chinese restaurant. One, the staff was really nice and friendly. Secondly, the place was well appointed and cozy. All the tables had tablecloths and linen napkins. We ordered beef stir-fried with ginger and onions, stir-fried scallops with broccoli, and braised duck with Chinese cabbage. My bro, my son, and I cleaned the plates. I mean there was nothing left. I would have licked the plates but I didn't want to embarress my kid brother since he's a regular here. Even the owner came by to deliver some of our food and to say hello to my bro. Turns out he's been coming to Mekong for the last 20 years. And he said that it's been consistantly good all that time. Came back a few nights later and had dim-sum and noodles. Dim sum at night, how sweet is that? The pot stickers, pork sui mai, shrimp har gow, cantonese chow mein, and beef chow fun were all good. Again, nothing left on the plates. Mekong is a place were you can get quality Chineses food in a clean friendly atmosphere where on any given night you can be dining next to somebody famous. Gotta be honest, we started the night heading for So Good. We got there on a Sat. night and the entire restaurant was reserved for a party??? Must have been our lucky night. A quick check of nearby restaurants on Yelp and Mekong was our new destination. First of all, the interior of Mekong is leaps and bounds above So Good. The food is excellent too! Mom and I shared General Tso's Chicken and Crispy Beef. DD had some Wonton soup and we also had an order of Fried Dumpings. This was some of the best Chinese food we had all had in a long time on either side of the border. Who knew that Ottawa was a hotbed for super tasty Chinese Food? There are two types of Chinese food - Authentic Chinese, and the kind that most non-Asian people eat. Mekong is the second of the two! You won't find any east Asians in here besides the wait staff, but if you're like me and Westernized is how you like your Chinese, this is a good choice. The curry beef egg rolls and Moo See Chicken were good, but the vegetarian egg rolls were oilier than necesary. We were surprised that the General Tao's chicken wasn't crispy. Nothing here is actually spicy even if you ask for it to be, so make sure to get extra hot sauce on the side. The portions are generous, so make sure you share. All in all, this is a nice date spot, but I'm not aching to check it out again. read more

Mekong Asian Cusine is a great place to go for some fine-dining, and high-quality Asian food. Their dinner menu in particular was scintilatingly good. Be sure to go with a big appetite, as you will want to sample their appetizers. Their dim sum collection is awesome; try the hunan dumplings or the curry beef egg roll. For chicken lovers, the Lemon chicken is great. I didn't try the duck, but my friend did, and couldn't stop raving about the marinated duck in soya sauce. After So Good was closed for March break, we decided to try Mekong for take-out. When we went to pick up our order the staff wasn't organized and we ended up waiting for 15-20 minutes for our order (on top of the 20 minutes they told us it would take). They had us stand in-between the kitchen and the restaurant and we felt as if we were in the way, and staff were constantly asking us to move. It just felt like a confusing, disorganized situation. Even with a 10% discount for takeout, prices were more expensive than other chinese restaurants in the area. Because of this we were expecting lots of food. This wasn't the case, and the size of the plates we received were a little on the small side. The food was just average. I doubt we will go back. read more

Mekong restaurant changed ownership in late 2018 and I visited twice recently. The owner is very polite, open to specific dietary requirements and the chef cooks really delicious foods, authentic tastes and large portions. Service is quick and food is served hot and fresh. Was on Somerset and thought we should find something to eat.Ended up in Mekong after looking at reviews on Yelp.The service was quick and the food was absolutely Devine.I had crispy beef and my Gf had the five spices shrimp.I tried both and they were spot on.The spring rolls were also very fresh.The best Chinese in Ottawa bar none! I've been to Mekong twice in the past month. As far as the food goes it was delicious in each visit. The fried noodles w beef and curry chicken were very tasty and large serving size. The one negative thing I experienced in both visits was slow service. The waitresses were good, helpful but slow to get drinks or take our order. Our meal for 4 people was over 2.5 hours long. Took my family out to dinner on a Thursday night and had a decent meal. We arrived when it was quiet but soon turned busy. Service slowed somewhat but they were still friendly and accommodating. The entries had good ingredients, worthy of a good Chinese restaurant in the Chinatown area. OK, so Mekong is literally parallel to where I live and I have only had it 3 times and remembered enjoying it. My friend from Montreal came down and said he wanted to go cuz he missed it (from Ottawa originally). Ordered the hunan dumplings and I am not exaggerating when I say they are THE best ones I have EVER had! OMG! We also split the chicken with sweet potatoes and coconut which was really really good. Almost tasted homemade which was nice. Excellent staff and cute ambience. I'm really scared they are going to get to know me by my first name soon :) read more
