Yiwen was my first yoga teacher when I started my practice around a year ago in Belmont. She taught me do much about yoga and beyond. The proper alignment and how to protect myself from injuries with different variations. She's a patient and loving teacher. I'm sad that she's not teaching in Belmont anymore but I'm glad that yogis from Beaverton can benefit so much from her teachings. After starting yoga at 60, my regret has been not starting my journey sooner. Taking classes with Yiwen has been life-changing. Yiwen's encouragement makes you want to do better though she repeatedly stresses to work at our own pace because yoga is a journey not a contest. Be warned that she is strict because she cares. Her goal is for us to do yoga the correct way, stressing the SAFE way and to check our egos at the door because she wants you to practice yoga for the rest of your life. I feel very fortunate that I found this school. Yiwen is an amazing teacher whose knowledge and abilities are extremely rare. I feel constantly impressed by her in class. She is great at teaching students of very different abilities, which is also a trait most teachers seem to lack. Personally, I have a neck injury that requires consideration in just about everything I do in life. Yiwen had been wonderful in her awareness of my specific issue and has created modifications for my class participation that have been beneficial in my recovery. Yiwen is a dedicated teacher who really cares about the well being of her students. From a purely physical perspective, it's working the muscles, skeletal system, and mind to improve strength, flexibility, and balance. While there are multitudes of yoga studios closer to my home, I study with Yiwen to get the most out of my yoga practice. I've practiced yoga regularly for over 15 years, studying with many teachers. Great class where Yiwen teaches you proper alignment and breath work to help your body help itself. She is able to identify the strength and misalignments in each student and help them have proper body mechanics so they gain strength, improve flexibility, improve overall health and are less likely to injure themselves. When I began practicing with Yiwen I was 59 and fairly new to yoga. Under Yiwen's consistent guidance, I learned so much about yoga and the asanas that I was transformed into a yogi for life. I discovered yoga about 3 1/2 years ago, at the age of 57. I stated with basic Hatha classes two times per week and now take Hatha and Vinyasa classes four to six times per week. Thanks to the exemplary training I received from Yiwen Chang, I know how to practice safely and with stability. Under Yiwen's guidance, I've seen improvement in strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance. Doing yoga makes me feel good, physically and mentally. I had the privilege of taking Yiwen's classes exclusively for 2 years. Her focus on proper alignment, combined with detailed instructions and verbal cues, gentle physical adjustments, smooth flow sequences, and carefully planned lessons made each class a valuable learning experience. Yiwen's "strong practice" classes were my favorite. They are designed to turn on your "internal furnace," challenging you to work to your full potential. I would leave exhausted, but energized and looking forward to the next class. Yiwen genuinely cares for each and every one of her students. She is always willing to spend time after class answering questions or to help you with particular poses. In addition to classes, Yiwen will offer special workshops which focus on specific areas, such as Yoga 101 & 102 (basic moves) or arm balances. I highly recommend the workshops to yogis who wish to elevate their practice to the next level. Because Yiwen limits the number of workshop participants, it is like having a private class. You will gain a wealth of information. If you just want to make shapes with your body to loud music, then Yiwen's classes are not for you.
