There is one nice wide family slide for everyone. There is one super steep one that my six year old braved successfully. The last two are like a twisty open one and then a twisty closed tube style. No life jackets are allowed on the slides but the lifeguards literally stand there and catch your kids and take them back to the side to get out and go again. I was there by myself outnumbered and nervous about my nonswimming kids and no life jackets but quickly relaxed and realized my kids were safe and having the time of their lives. The lifeguards were happy to pass my kids to me but also totally fine if I got out to go do the family slide with one of them if needed. That's always the tricky part of being outnumbered by kids - when the pack wants to split up and I can't be two places at once. Anyway the snack bar food was pretty terrible but pizza was alright. You can bring in a cooler though. Next time I'll pack a full picnic for everyone. They do a lot of adult swims so the lifeguards can rotate but that gives everyone a chance to grab a snack and potty and also gave us a nice window to exit. The pool temp was fantastic and the water was clean. It's a government facility so there's some stuff that could use an upgrade naturally but for $10 a person I was impressed!

Other than that small detail (I had to stop at a reenlistment picnic to ask someone for directions), it is a smash hit and we love it! I am only bummed we didn't know about it last summer! Admission is $6 for active duty, retirees, reservists, & eligible family members, $8 for guests (up to 2 guests per adult w/ ID), kids 3 and under are free. Season passes are based on the number of people in your family... 1= $60, 2= $110, 3= $135, 4= $170, 5= $200, 6= $225 Despite the website's direction that no outside food is allowed and you must purchase food from concessions, *EVERYONE* brings a cooler with lunch in it. So, pack away and save yourself a fortune in concession stand prices. This is a clean and well-maintained facility, for sure. They offer pavilion rental and swimming lessons, which is great! One thing you'll want to warn your kids about ahead of time is "adult swim time" which is a 15 minute break for the kids from the pool they allows the adults to enjoy the facilities (and helps prevent sun-poisoned, exhausted kids)... my kids were upset because adult swim happened 10 mins after we arrived. Oops! There is plenty of seating and it's not so crazy (or wasn't today) that there are long lines... if you get here in time to snag a table, you'll have shade under an umbrella, but annoyingly, people fill the tables with their stuff (even though they aren't sitting there) and you'll be left without shade unless you plan ahead. The snack bar is an array of popsicles, string cheese, burgers, and preservative-packed packaged food that will run you between $0.50 and $5.00 per item. Not terrible on price, really, but far from health-friendly. Better than nothing! For $6/$8 per person, it's a great time. Pack a lunch to save more money, bring as many friends as you can fit in your car. We will be back!

Although the owner was closing up after a birthday party, he still took the time to show me around and talk to me about his establishment. He takes so much pride in this place, as it is kept up beautifully. I finally got around to bringing my kids here to play, and they had so much fun. They switch the layout around often so the kids can find new ways to play and have fun. There is an area for parents to sit down while you let your kids get their energies out. They also close late in the summer, which is fantastic.

Rock walls, ropes, colorful foam blocks, everything you need to create the perfect fitness gym for kids! The owners are a husband and wife team and are very friendly. The business is new and they were offering the free classes as a way to get their name out there. The owner is really passionate about teaching the kids fitness and even does a kid run every Saturday at a local park. He had my 3 year old doing pull-ups, burpees, and squats! He explained each exercise to the kids and even told them why the exercise was important. They finished off the class by completing an obstacle course. My daughter loved every minute of her class and definitely slept well! She is already asking when she can go back to the "Baby Ninja" class! I would recommend purchasing the grip socks they sell for 1.00. They allow regular socks or barefoot but the kids with the grip socks were able to move through the course more easily than those in regular socks or barefoot. Thank you for creating a space to teach our youth the importance of fitness. We will definitely be back!

This pool is Norfolk's newest recreational center and is a real beauty. For those outside the…read moreswimming community you would never know about the shortage of swimming pools this area has, but it's true. This new facility was a very welcome addition to Norfolk and the surrounding communities. The complex is almost a year old and looks it too. The building is a looker from the outside with all glass and clean lines. A really cool bronze statute greets you out front of a woman with long legs and arms stretched out. Parking is good, but not sure I would say great if they were really busy. One thing that will not be too much of an issue is this facility is not really set up for swim meets. Could they do a small one... YES! They even have a scoreboard. I really don't see it. Also a drawback is no exercise room that would have been a sweet enhancement. As you enter the check in desk is in front, a nice lobby with TV to the left and lockers to the right. Also to the left and down the corridor a bit is a large multi purpose room with kitchen. This was an important aspect of the facility to hold meetings and accommodate parties etc. The locker rooms are very small, with only two benches to change on. This was one of the missed opportunities I will speak to in this review. They had plenty lockers, but few stalls and a small showering area. However, I found them to be spic and span. Let's get to the exciting part. The pool is a six lane with a two story water slide that swirls you outside and back in and down into the pool. They also have a basketball hoop. I was impressed with pool and deck, it was really done nicely. There are blocks at the end of the lanes for diving starts. I am unsure if the length is in meters, or yards. The size of the pool was the biggest missed opportunity of the complex. An eight lane pool is standard for running swim meets. A six lane is completely inadequate to hold a swimming competition. There is a score board, but my assumption is not one meet has taken place. They most certainly had the land to expand. There is probably two acres out back. It will be interesting to see if this land is ever developed. The spectator area is first class. Just off the deck on three tiers. It is comfortable and parents can easily see there swimmers play, take lessons etc. This is something they gave some thought to and I score this high having seating just off the pool and close to children. The lifeguards that I encountered were approachable and nice to talk to. The evening that I attended a lifeguard not on duty was providing private lessons to a young swimmer. The guards have there own room which is state of the art with exam table and plenty of cabinet for storage. I also saw the must have defibrillator. I like the location of this aquatic center, especially in Norfolk where the greatest need was. The city had the foresight to seek the funding and got it built. However, the lack of a eight lane pool was just not smart at all! Compare what the City of Virginia Beach does at there recreational centers. Everyone is an eight lane competition pool. If your a resident of Norfolk you can get in for a discount, other pay more. Of course they have membership and I would recommend. Since they offer lessons parents should take notice of when classes are being offered to make sure the little one can swim. There is so much water in our community and programs like this are perfect to educate on water safety and have fun.

My friend informed me Larkspur is a members-only facility, so you pay a fee (I'm assuming annually since I didn't ask) for membership. He and his wife rented out the facility for the evening - which turned out to be for 4 hours, so his girls and their friends could galavant and enjoy the amenities. Lifeguards were included with the rental - well, it's essential, but you know what I'm saying. Larkspur offers an L-shaped swimming pool, 2 tennis courts, an outdoor grill, an indoor banquet room, plenty of patio seating and, I believe, locker rooms. I didn't swim - I just wanted to get out of the house for a little bit (and the weather was perfect on Friday, 8/21!), see some friends and hang out. KRA offers youth sports such as tee ball, baseball, fast pitch softball, football, basketball and cheering. You can register online or in person when they hold sign-ups. This review is only for the tee ball program. Our son played tee ball with KRA in the Fall of 2010 and Spring of 2011. He had a different coach each time. Both were nice, patient guys and good with the kids, but the first coach was far superior to the second in that he wasn't soft spoken and could lead the team. Kids in the tee ball age group need a lot of firm direction. When my kid is on that field, whether it be practice or a game, coach is in charge. You do as coach says the first time he says it. It can still be fun, but if the whole team is sitting around playing in the dirt, no one is getting anything out of that. Either way, I give these guys a lot of credit for their patience. The kids received team hats and shirts that they were able to keep. The shirts were not personalized with their names. The parents buy their child's glove, pants, socks and cleats. We found little bat bags at Target for $10. The beginning of the season seemed disorganized. After sign ups it took an awful long time to find out when practice would start. I don't understand why practice start dates wouldn't be set ahead of time. I know each team practices at a different time and place, but I couldn't even get an answer to what week practice would start. Once practice did start, the seasons ran smoothly. The coaches were provided with practice equipment, including batting helmets. In the Fall season we traveled to different locations in the area to play, and home games were played at the fields by the Rec Center. The Spring season all games were played at the Rec Center. That was so much more convenient. Overall, our experience with the tee ball program was OK. I know it's run by volunteers, so it is what is is. I don't know how the other programs are run. We did football and basketball with West Kempsville Youth Athletics in 2011 and loved it, so we tried out tee ball with them this year. That review is coming next. I would say that the KRA Tee Ball program is better than the West Kempsville Tee Ball program, but I'm not a huge fan of either. Next year we are going to try out the Kempsville Pony Baseball league.
