Brilliant warm welcome to everyone that comes to their shopfront to order. Naturally they speak Japanese just adding to the pot of authentic atmosphere and drawing me more into it. I am biased towards a pro-Japanese culture so I dove right in. The menu is simple with pictures (what's a menu without pictures?), prices clearly marked. No EFTPOS or card - cash only (go to an ATM first) which can be a bit of a nuisance because the sign is at the register but the buildings around you have a selection of ATMs to choose from making getting cash easy.\ Upon order completion I was given a "yummy yummy" token with my order number on the back. Though not mine to keep, I almost wanted to pocket it and not pick up my order. Keeping a beautiful souvenir from my experience here. The current order display wasn't very reliable and jumped all over the place - so listen out for your order number. Taste was exactly what I expected and reasonably priced. The drinks are cheap and full flavour without being sickly sweet. Good presentation and there's no skimping out on any condiments. Everything is prepared fresh to order, so if there's a line, expect up to about a 10 minute wait whilst your order is prepared. Instead of walking past next time, I urge everyone who's never tried takoyaki before to stop in and grab some. Try the meats if seafood isn't up your alley. It's a vibrant atmosphere that is almost certainly going to draw you in and your camera to your hand.

The noodles were bountiful but the veggies were not. Sometimes the veg is my fave part so that made me a bit sad. Luckily, my partner isn't a veg fan and gave me the bok choy off of his plate. YUM! I got an order of roti myself because the Malay version is my absolute favorite. This one did not disappoint. Crispy, savory, tasty and oily in just the right way. We also had the roti platter with curry chicken. Really good. I love the sambal that's peanut and ikan bilis (fried fishies).

After reading countless blog reviews, I was determined to try Mama's Buoi out! I must say it was quite a mission finding the restaurant, it is located on Devonshire Street in Surry Hills, so we assumed it would not be a long walk, but it actually took over an hour to get there from the CBD! But it was totally worth it - so happy to have found this gem! Mama's Buoi serves Vietnamese home-style dishes ranging from Vietnamese grills, hot pots, soups, summer rolls and salads. They also serve beers, cocktails and a range of T2 teas (the lemon and ginger flavour is soothing and delicious). From the menu, we ordered the Goi cuon rice paper rolls with prawn and pork ($8 for two rolls, cut in half), the Lemongrass pork/pork spring rolls vermicelli noodle salad bowl ($14), the Coconut tamarind curry ($14) and the BBQ chicken slaw (also $14). The rice paper rolls were yummy, but the nuoc mam dipping sauce on the side was the highlight! My sister had the coconut tamarind curry and she said it was very spicy, but had a wonderful flavour. The lemongrass pork vermicelli was almost perfect, but lacking sauce (ended up putting the rice paper rolls sauce on top!). Finally, the BBQ chicken slaw - succulent chicken with a fresh and and delicious slaw, accompanied by the most amazing rice crisps! All the dishes were fantastic and we all agreed that this was due to the fact that all the spices and herbs were perfectly balanced and everything tasted so fresh! As for the layout and décor, well it is very cool and modern. Loved the stand out giant mural at the back of the restaurant saying "Con co thuong me khong?" translating to "Do you love Mama?". The fit out is wonderfully bright, the menus are pretty and best of all, the kitchen is open, so you can watch the chefs do their thing (the smells are heavenly!).
