Cool Mennonite run store and deli.

Cool Mennonite run store and deli. Delicious sandwiches with 2 meats and 2 cheeses plus toppings for just 4.95. Also great freshly made baked goods and breads, macaroni salads, ham salad, potato salad ect. Also a lot of preserved goods, candy, and snacks. Great place to stop for lunch.

Let's start with a backstory, about 3 of 4 years ago Perks changed ownership and the food quality…read moreimproved drastically, the owner was in frequently and there was a nice red head woman who was friendly that both cooked and ran register. Fast forward to today Feb 2024, I was in a pretty decent mood so I go in to get some fish, I hadn't been in about a year (when the fish is freshly cooked it's pretty spectacular) I look at the food bar and the fish looks...sus, I also see some food I don't recognize so I ask the woman at the counter how long has the fish been up. She sighs, rolls her eyes and looks at the clock behind me and says "I don't know maybe about 30 mins or so..." so I ask what's the food in the corner and she blankly says potatoes... Well, I was going to buy some fish, potatoes and probably a drink and a snack, easily about $15-20, instead I bought a small $3 cup of potatoes because they looked good enough. Sorry I bothered you all to do your job, I thought you were there to make money. Don't worry though I'm not going back, I definitely won't be giving you any more money and I don't recommend anyone else go either. If they don't care, why should you? Would not recommend.

I'd be careful getting any of the canned goods as I've noticed most are expired. Not much of a selection there in anything. Your best bet is go across the street the the Exxon market as they are well lit and looks clean and unlike the employee up at Perks who was rude and obnoxious, the people across the street are much more friendlier. I don't understand how this store is still open but whatevs. Thank goodness I will not have to step into that store again :)

I'm writing this review for my 80+ year old aunt and 61 year old cousin who got charged with…read moreshoplifting this week at the South Hill, Va Walmart. I'm furious and this is just where I'm starting with filing complaints for them. They were using the self service checkout and the associate assisting the customers had to keep coming over to clear the checkout because it kept malfunctioning (at least 10-12 times during their transaction). He would clear the problem and told them to continue scanning their items, which they did. They finished and paid and went to leave the store, at which time they were stopped by another Walmart associate and taken to an office where they were accused of shoplifting. All of their items had to be checked. The lady doing this, asked my cousin where was the Red Bull that was on the receipt. He told her he did not purchase a Red Bull because they do not drink Red Bull. She insisted it was on the receipt and implied they must have scanned a Red Bull in lure of something more expensive in their cart (in other words, price changing). After searching again and then realizing what she thought was Red Bull on the receipt was actually Red Bell Pepper. Than, she did the same thing with beanie weinies. Saying there was beanie weinies on the receipt, but no beanie weinies in the bags. After searching again, she found the beanie weinies. By this time my 80+ year old aunt (who has severe heart issues) is shaking and so upset. Never being in any type of trouble in her entire life, you can only imagine what is going on in her head. Her son, my 61 year old, was scared to death his mother was getting ready to have a heart attack, having to go through this. Neither of them have ever been in any kind of trouble, so both were freaking out. At the end of their searching and accusing of pricing changing and all this unnecessary disrespect, they did find a few items that did not scan. Approximately $40 or less worth of stuff. (I'm still trying to get all of the details, because I do plan to pursue a formal complaint with corporate on this). Of course, the Walmart associate felt like she had done a great job catching shoplifters. All the while my cousin telling her, the guy assisting the self check out customers had to keep coming over to clear the register because it was malfunctioning and each time told them to continue scanning the items as they were. She acted like it was something they were doing causing it to malfunction so they could get out of paying for some items. The police were called and the associate had my cousin charged with shoplifting. And get this!!! They would have charged my 80+ year old aunt, but in the Walmart Associate's words, "she doesn't fit our profile." But my 61 year old cousin fits "Walmart's Profile" for shoplifters. Profiling, really!!! So, if you are 61 years old, you fit a shoplifters profile in their eyes!!! All of this is so unacceptable!!! Walmart pushes people to use their self checkout lines. Than, when people have issues with it, they want to accuse and charge them with shoplifting??? My cousin now has a court date in July for this. I realize it will probably all work out just fine. But do you think my aunt, who already has severe heart issues, is going to be able to sleep a good nights sleep until all of this is behind them. It could possibly cause her more damage to her heart. Someone who has never been in any type of trouble in their entire life worries about stuff to the extreme. So take note: Do not use the self check out lines if you have to go to Walmart in South Hill. Chances are you might have to face a judge. And to the Walmart Associate that was so disrespectful of two very good people, I hope you lose your job! You do not need to be in customer service cause you obviously were determined to pin shoplifting on someone. She couldn't even read the receipt properly to see the difference in Red Bull and Red Bell Peppers. Didn't even apologize for any of this either. I think a news crew should show up for this court date!!! This is so unbelievable wrong in so many ways. Walmart in South Hill, Va. should get all the publicity they deserve with this one. I think I'll be making that trip with them and making sure the news crews are aware of such stuff happening in the court room that day as well.

With my merchandise in hand, I parked the Sprinter van in a corner for the night. I was not disturbed and that's a plus. I'm always a fan of Walmarts that allow overnight parking for us RVers. Yesterday, May 6, 2026, I went into Walmart Farmville, VA store to return new GPS which quit…read moreworking. Exchange went fine. I wanted to replace the same model GPS so I was sent back to "Electronics" for the item. I arrived and NO ONE was around so I pressed the 'button' for assistance. I waited...the button cleared itself, so I pressed it again and AGAIN it 'told me' "an associate is on the way." It went off (w/time) again. An employee came past PUSHING ONE OF THOSE DAMNED CARTS FOR SHOPPERS TOO LAZY TO SHOP THEMSELVES, and I asked her if she could help me. although I explained to him it was not an "exchange" since I already had returned the other GPS I only needed to have him open a case for me to get a replacement. He told me he didn't have a key...he could not help me. Another employee came past, in Electronics, and I asked her, but she told me she was "clocking in: and would tell someone? I was waiting. I saw a salesman and asked him for help and he told me "I do not do exchanges," although I EXPLAINED to him that Another customer (a man) came and I told him I had pressed the button twice w/out any response so he said," then I'll press it a third time." We both WAITED and the machine went OFF again and even a FOURTH time it went off and cleared itself. I finally (after about 20+ minutes) went up to the front and requested the manager. I waited for her, then told her that there were 2 customers waiting for a long time for assistance to purchase from Electronics. She asked me to wait, and I did for a couple of minutes but then told her I was going back and had better see a salesperson. When I got back to Electronics a saleswoman was wafting on a man (a man I had not seen, and I imagine that the man who had been waiting w/me LEFT) and I told her that I had been there first...she told me I'd have to WAIT and then the older man (who told me he could not "exchange") began to reprimand me for complaining to the saleswoman ....he was quite upset that I was complaining to her. FINALLY after the saleswoman decided to give me an answer, she told me that GPS were no longer sold in Electronics..."go to Automotive..." So, I go off to Automotive...began to SEEK a salesperson...NONE to find, so I asked a stock person in the back, behind the doors, if he could find me a person to unlock the GPS cabinet...he called on his WM phone...so I went back to the locked case and WAITED AGAIN...NO ONE CAME ...SO I WALKED BACK TO THE STOCK DOORS AND SAW THE SAME MAN AND ASKED HIM AGAIN to find me SOMEONE to open the locked cabinet and sell me a GPS!!!! He went off and never returned, so after WAITING MORE TIME, I went back to Automotive (the desk) and saw the man I'd asked to find someone...he was hanging there at the desk and the other man was on the phone...I was told, by the 'stockman' that the man was on the phone and I'd have to WAIT...I was in that store for OVER AN HOUR and I never could get anyone to open the damned cabinet so I could purchase the GPS. I tried today NUMEROUS times to call and request the item to be p/u but with all the calls, to Operator, to Automotive, and finally to Pharmacy I NEVER got a person! The store, in Farmville, DOES NOT ANSWER ITS PHONE!!!!!! i KEP A RECORD OF THE CALLS AND HOW LONG IT WAS BEFORE THE PHONE TOLD ME THEY WERE BUSY AND CUT THE CALLS OFF!!! i have had this same PROBLEM with this same Farmville store in the past and complained to Corp before...they DO NOT ANSWER THE PHONE! I wanted the item, and was prepared to spend/buy more, but I am seriously considering NEVER going into that store again. And this accommodating the LAZY people who refuse to shop themselves, with employees up and down isles, blocking isles or parking their carts in the middle of the isles that customers who do shop themselves must weave around them and/or ask them to MOVE and then carrying their purchases to their cars; allocating an entire row of spaces for the 2 or 3 Pick up customers and then those of us who are handicapped must park far away...let them park at the rear of the lot since they aren't walking anyway. I am beginning to question if this is legal...if I am not suffering the prejudice of Walmart favoring the lazy shopper, the "pick-up" shopper over a handicapped shopper or any other shoppers....and I will tell you that I hear other seniors complain about exactly the same problem w/the pick up and the employees pushing carts around instead of assisting IN STORE customers to buy and to check out!!!! I will be posting this to ALL my friends everywhere and on FB...this has got to STOP! Perhaps the Federal Govt would be interested to learn of this bias on the part of Walmart! I am certainly ready to contact my representatives, the Office of the Aging, and the organization which protects against unfair advantages. SINCE I MUST POST A STAR REATING IT IS 1 BUT IF IT WAS TRUE RATING IT WOULD BE MINUS 10 OUT OF 10!!!

I guess that's the good thing about visiting bug businesses like these in small towns.
