What a gem of a place! It's like a very mini, mini Daiso. It's basically a Japanese gift shop and home goods store. Half the store is a majority of Japanese snacks (including lots of Ramune soda & KitKat options) & plushies. They also had a section dedicated to Japanese dinnerware. It's tucked inside River Market and I cannot believe it's taken me so long before going inside. Lots of cute things, but the snacks were my favorite. I let my kids come here to pick their own dessert snack, while I try a new KitKat flavor.

A pretty cool place if you are looking to pick up cute stuff! Stumbled upon it while walking around that foodie area of KC and am glad I did! The things aren't cheap there but I ended up getting a Totoro and Pusheen plushies to add to my collection. They also have a bunch of other cute plushies, stickers, drinks, etc, etc! Basically a nice little shop to pick up anything Japanese pop culture, all things kawaii!

Pusheen wall of plushies, bowls, figures, keychains, etc.

Very sweet place, had lots of my favorite things when I went a while back and were very sweet, spacious medium sized store with lots of merchandise for anime, pusheen, ramen, soda, etc.

Such a cute place! Come prepared to browse and find something you didn't expect. My personal favorites were the unique flavors of Kit Kat Bars and the beautiful plates and bowls. And the prices aren't bad!

Good for eastern candies and anime tchotchke's. Not sure why you'd buy an $8 dish sponge, but if that's your bag, knock yourself out.

I absolutely love this place! They have all kinds of unique items from Japan that you can't get anywhere else in Kansas City.

Do they sell raw fish to make sushi (sushi grade fish)? If not, is there anywhere local that does?

The kids will be lured in by the displays in the windows 10 out of 10 times, so parents, I suggest an alternate route unless you want to pick up another unicorn stuffy or a whoopee cushion. There is such a nice array of classic toys, new ones, board games, science-centric toys, books, and more. This is a go-to when we're heading to another kid's birthday party and you can always find something pretty fairly priced. They also (if I'm remembering correctly) will offer to wrap things too, so it's absolutely worth coming here vs ordering something online. Great spot, please stay open for decades to come!

If you have little kids you'll know that there just aren't as many dedicated toy stores as there were back in the 90s. I remember when I was growing up aside from places like Brookside Toy and Science, there was also Toys R Us, a few other local spots, and the really cool FAO Schwartz on the plaza. As a kid the most magical places to me were always the FAO Schwartz and the local spots like the learning tree and zoom. Nowadays I feel like we often end up either online shopping on Amazon or going to Target to find a birthday present for kid's parties. This spring I decided we were going to break that cycle and start supporting small, local businesses instead. Brookside Toy & Science was the first on my list. We visited here on my daughter's birthday and I told her she had a certain amount she could spend. In retrospect that may have been too much leeway for five year old, but she had a ball exploring, trying out some of the toys on display, and eventually landed on a robot lizard. What I like about this toy store in particular is that they really do blend toys and science. There are taxidermied animals, skulls, and other oddities on display and for sale closer to the back. This gives the store a bit of unique flair that makes it stand out. I also like that the shelves are mostly at kid height so they can explore independently, and I love that they have a huge space dedicated to kid friendly board games, which I took a mental note of for the holidays. My only disappointment was the lack of playmobil toys as my daughter has recently gotten into them and they were listed as an official retailer online. I did see a few, but it was just not very robust. I'm guessing that they aren't super popular and that's why - which I understand! Just sort of a bummer for me. Overall though this is for sure a five star spot and if you're on the hunt for a toy store this should check your boxes.

The toy had popped as she opens it after purchase then night before at around 5 before closing. I came back this morning with her to buy more of the similar toys and also, I address the issues to your store Manager. He pointed to the policy I indicated I understand but that's sucks for a child that just paid for it out her own money and we did not even play with it. He got defensive and told me he can't do anything in a rude manor and giving details of about why the policy is there insinuating we broke it and things of that nature. We had st this pointI tried to explain but he got louder in front of my daughter, we told him we where done and I tire quickly de escalate indicated he was out of control and should not be in that manner and he really got mad and told me he does not need our business that's of course as cashier who clearly was embarrassed was checking our 10 year old out with the additional toys she wanted to purchase. We have never been treaded in that manner and if it wasn't for our daughter I will have gone straight to customer service and report it.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find some things I was looking for like Hot Wheels even after a couple runs back and forth through the store. Maybe this is because it was so busy and I missed things - or because they were out. And the store runs on the pretty expensive side. I love supporting local and spending more is worth it to me. Maybe I'm just not familiar enough with toy prices, but it seemed well on the higher end to me - spent more money here than I have probably anywhere else locally this holiday season simply because of the high price points.

It has three floors--the second level, which is the main level, has a large collection of Banbao toys, which are like Legos but cheaper. They also had many other cool things like models, marbles, and marshmallow guns (and plenty of other things that don't start with the letter M). The top floor had more toys, such as a wall of Playmobile, some German toys, and some more neat models, including models of Leonardi da Vinci's inventions that you can put together and actually make work. There are also some toddler and preschool level toys, like pretend food and Melissa & Doug puzzles and toys that teach skills like tying shoes. The bottom level is a model train lovers dream. We love looking at model trains but absolutely aren't into making them, but it was really cool to look around and see what a model train enthusiastic world is like. Customer service is great. I think we spoke with the owners, or at least some of the main employees, and they were super nice, showing our shy children some of the toys and letting my kids try them out. It was clear that they really love toys and their customers. We left without buying anything, but we're hoping to come back soon and give them our business!
