Very cool to see this 101-year-old store with the creaky wooden floors, and original wooden drawers! Huge, beautiful wind chimes!! and seeds. It smells like an Amish store, or like the spice store they used to have on Old World Third Street in Milwaukee! It is pricey though... I love and frequent this shop often. They have so many things! They are primarily a hardware/garden shop. But they have spices, coffee, tea, and candy too. I don't visit the hardware section often but I use pretty much everything else they offer. They have a huge seed selection and lots of flowers, bulbs, and even grass seed. Basically anything you need to start or maintain a garden and even your yard. In the spring and summer they have little starter plants if you don't want to mess with seeds. I exclusively buy my garden supplies from them. Coffee. They have a ton of bulk coffee and tea. You can get it ground and even whole. And they have seasonal specials too. They are competitive in price. I've gifted the tea but haven't tried it myself. Spices. So many spices. They have several mixes that I love and use-taco, garlic salt, Greek, even garam Marsala. You can probably find almost anything you need. When soup bases and dip mixes. They also have various candies, nuts, beans, and garden supplies throughout the store. My mother drug me along to go to planters when I was preteen, I've been going ever since, I'm late sixties now. As folks have said yard and garden is a prominent part but they have a lot of things to put on the wish list. In the past we have brought home RRP pottery bowls and pie pans. Wind chimes that were as my wife says "Amazing". The spices, oh the spices - you walk in the door and you're in olfactory bliss. We haven't visited Planters for a couple years, but next week the plan is to see what is new. I have no doubt they will be sending me home with dried beans and spices, oh you'll buy them by the little bag, the bigger bag and before you know it, by the pound. read more

A must stop when we are in KC. WHY? That is the question, doesn't have food, and is basically a hardware store/Gardening ...BUT Spices, not terribly exotic although might find some interesting things to try. Worchester powder was the most recent 'let's try it'.First usage on a steak gave it a little bit of Worchester flavor but not real strong. An example also are spices that can be bought cheaper than in grocery. Cream of Tarter cost me over $3 for a very small amount in the grocery an aside on this is only 1 of 2 groceries I buy from had it. At Planters I bought at least 3 times the amount for about same price. Coffee and Tea, we don't usually buy too much tea here because of the other tea store inside the City Market But, I do enjoy the different flavors of coffee....One of my favorites is the Highlanders grog. Just a different blend. They are a gardening store so the seed selection is extensive, with numerous tools available. OH, don't forget the birdhouses and seed. We always find things here, so beware. read more

This is one of my favorite places in Kansas City. Bulk spices, (unique ones at that!), flower seeds, feed for animals, gift sets for everyone in the family, and gorgeous flowers in the spring, summer and fall! They have fun trinkets and things you can actually use for your yard or farm and it's all located in a delightful old building with wood floors that still creak and the architecture is absolutely marvelous to look at while shopping! If you're looking for a specific type of tomato or pepper, they'll have it. If you think the spice rack T your food market is impressive, you ain't seen nothing yet. Now, after the shock $ awe of the seed depot, go visit the other sections. Neat yard art, wind chimes, planters and every kind of garden fertilizer, fungicide, bug killer you can imagine. I was very mistaken walking in - I thought it was only a small, one-room seed shop. But it was five rooms and not small and seeds are only the half of it. Gardening supplies are provided in bulk, in every size and style, color, and design - the possibilities are endless in this endlessly LARGE store in the River Market (uncomfortably close to other small garden supply stores - I have to wonder if these garden businesses proliferating in this corner of downtown are knowingly or unknowingly cannibalizing eachother's profits - I suspect so - I counted three other stores within a three-minute walk!) But either way, Planters is the king of all garden supply stores and seeds and anything that has to do with soil and sun and nature and food. The smell is incredible because they sell their own seasonings and salt mixes, coffee grinds and jams (it smelled like a very busy and worldly kitchen - but no one was cooking a thing.) I remember a yelper talking about how much she loved fake cheese - well, she's NOT ALONE because Planters had a fresh supply of homemade cheese powder and somehow, coming from a place this natural, it made fake cheese look like a food group. But that's not all: wasabi powder, tequila lime seasoning, spaghetti, taco, southern, vegetable, shrimp seasonings, nuts, teas, anything edible, potent and fine or coarsely ground and stored was all here (and I wish I could bottle the smell.) Bulbs were on sale for 50% off and anyplace that sells anything that cheap is a store worth visiting at least once - you never know what you might need in the future that they'll sell you almost nothing (that's how I justify buying two bulbs at least when I've never grown a successful garden in my life, ha). They also had kitchen supplies, kettles and aprons and quirky knickknack-type things that would keep you busy to poke through for hours if you had the time. If for nothing other than this, I have to love a place that made me feel like I wanted to grow some flowers nearing the coldest of the winter months. I will never shop here again. New to visiting Kansas City from California, noticed this building off the freeway and decided to check it out. We walked in as another person was paying. The customer was a black man and from the area, I could tell by his accent. He was trying to make sure the cashier did not give him to much change back. The cashier treated him horribly, was rude and even talked about him when he left the store. By this time, I had a basket full of items that I was going to purchase, and I decided to not purchase anything from this establishment because of what I heard and saw. You could blind-fold me and take me to Planters Seed & Spice Co and from the smell alone I could tell you where I was. My aunt worked here when I was a kid and it smells exactly the same as it did over 30 years ago. It's the mixture of spices, coffee, tea, grass seed and old building smell. (How's that for a fragrance.......Demeter???) It smells so good to me. Planters is old, big and full of many things for the kitchen, the patio, the yard and beyond. The original wood floors creak, the employees are nice and it takes your mind to another time. A trip to the River Market isn't complete unless I step into Planters. If you never have, take some time, take a deep inhale and plant that aroma into your memory and I bet you will never be able to forget it. It's a great local store, go and support them. read more

In many ways, I'm just and old fashioned kind of girl. I still use paper maps, I stubbornly shun canned biscuits, and the thought of using those newfangled flameless candles makes me cringe. So Planters appeals to my belief that modern doesn't necessarily equal better. Planters has the feel of a general store. The creaky wooden floors sport a nice patina. You can buy every type of seed imaginable here. What's more, they keep many of them in bulk in the large wooden drawers in the massive wall cabinet behind the counter. Order what you want and they scoop it out into one of those old cast iron scales and weigh it out for you. My favorite part of the store though was the spice area. Lots of spices, bagged and tagged and begging you to take them home. Prices were unreasonably reasonable. 2oz of white peppercorns less than $3. Additionally I got a quarter pound of each of the following: The most delicious smelling bbq rub. Black Sesame seeds White Sesame Seeds Whole Nutmegs Beau Monde Orange Pepper Curry Powder Wasabi powder Black Mustard Seeds French Fry Seasoning Lavender Chives All told my final bill was $25. What a deal. You can also buy bulk tea leaves out of those aforementioned drawers. This place is truly a gem. A throwback to simpler times. I fell head over heels for Planters. read more

Let me preface this by saying that I do not have a green thumb. So I'm a bit amazed that not only have I not killed the little jade plant my mom gave me but it actually needs to be re-potted. I remembered this today as I was driving by this store. "Great, I can buy a new pot" I thought. I was feeling a bit intimidated walking in and the staff did NOT help. I stumbled over my words asking where the pots were and the employee stared at me before he pointed to the right. I guess I was hoping for a super friendly staff who I would feel comfortable asking for tips on how to re-pot my plant. Nope, didn't happen. Then when I was ready to purchase my pot and soil I had to pull an employee away from the conversation she was having with another employee so she could go to the register. During the transaction she didn't say anything to me until the end. "You need a bag for that?" They seem to have a nice selection of spices and random gifts. How do I REALLY know it's spring in Kansas City? I finally decide to take my first trip of the season to Planters to pick up some fresh herbs. Great selection, really friendly people. I would assume that this place has all the average person could need for a full outdoor garden, though I don't know as i've never planted a full outdoor garden. Apartment life seems to require canisters. There's just something wonderful, however, about driving down Walnut street, that first time you notice that Planters has brought all of their herbs and flowers out into the streets. I guess this was a good place? I went with the understand we were buying 'pot for my mom'. At least that's what I heard. Turns out, it was POTS for my mom's garden. Whew! Didn't know my mom was a stoner, so that realization really turned my day around. Admittedly not being a green-thumb, it seemed to be pretty A-OK. I mean, I saw a lot of dirt, plants and containers and stuff. If one had a garden, or knew anything ABOUT gardening, I bet this place would be like what going to an electronics or clothing store with good deals is for me. I used to go here with my parents, so there is a little nostalgia mixed into this review. You have to stop here if you are in River Market, but it is also worth a stop even if you are not. If you are a foodie like me, this place is a little slice of heaven located in the Kansas City River Market area. I visited here a few weeks ago as part of my Foodie Tour of KC, and discovered the most amazing variety of fresh spices, teas, coffees and other goodies....AND a great selection of seeds for you gardening fans! The staff is very helpful and made some great suggestions about using some of the spices--and the selection is incredible. I actually found a few things I'd never tried before! Since I was from out of town, they agreed to ship everything home for me (hey, I wasn't giving up my ground jalapeno powder to any nosy TSA!) and it arrived literally the day after I got home. I like to go in this place and just inhale...I think if I could come up with a dish that tastes like this place smells, I'd win the James Beard Award. Well, as long as it didn't taste like the lawn-care products... This place reminds me of the old dry-goods store in my parents' home town-tin ceiling, creaky wood floors, no A/C...but with cooler stuff. I don't buy spices anywhere else, and if I were an urban farmer I'd sure get my seeds here. They have a better selection of fresh potted herbs than most places, and a decent selection of bedding plants and other garden stuff. The staff are helpful and friendly, and they'll carry the heavy stuff to your car for you-Home Depot won't do that! And speaking of heavenly smells, did I mention the caramel corn at Christmas? My friend introduced me to this place and I have fallen in love! When you first walk into the store you're instantly hit with the aroma of spices which, to me, is such a pleasant smell. Anyone that knows me knows that I am a spice fanatic so naturally this has become one of my favorite places. Went in today to stock up on spices and spent $15 on 9 different spices which to me is extremely reasonable. A word of warning, it does get crowded and can be kinda of difficult to get to certain spices because of the crowd but it is so worth it! This is one of my favorite businesses for supplying my little farm and my farmers market business. They have a huge selection of seeds, bulbs, potato seeds, onion sets, seed starting supplies, fertilizers, organic fertilizers not to mention all kinds of gardening paraphernalia, spices, etc. They also sell seeds in bulk. Planter's is conveniently located in the River Market area with a large free parking lot across the street. Be prepaerd for lots of suburbanites and tourists. I'm surprised I haven't reviewed Planters yet, as I'm definitely a fan. Any trip to the City Market also results in a trip to Planters, either to pick up some necessary spices to restock our supplies, or to find some new spice to put into a recipe or a rub for meat. I like that the spices are sold in nice little prepackaged bundles of various sizes here, unlike the potential disease/insect filled cesspits in the Market! Prices for the spices are very reasonable (better than the grocery store), there's a huge selection, and it's also a great place to pick up either a pre-made gift pack, or put together your own, for an interesting and unique present for someone. In fact, when my brother and sister-in-law moved in to their new home, we got them an array of spices, prettily wrapped, as a small housewarming gift. Planters also sells live plants, seeds, and pretty much anything you'd need for your garden (including décor)...AND my favorite lip balms (and body balms) of all time, Badger Balm! It's a great store, and I love that I'm able to shop somewhere local that also feels like a little piece of history - I imagine that this is what shops would've been like in the days of covered wagons and waving prairie grasses. If you're in the River Market area, stop in to Planters! Even if you don't think you need anything, you'll probably end up finding something new to try, and it's definitely worth a visit. read more

I like this place a lot. It's got an amazing selection of just about everything plant, seed, and spice related. The store seems to go on forever, each room leading into the next sloping old wooden floor, the shelves lined with gardening goodies. There is something about this store that makes me feel as though I'm shopping in an old general store. The owners are always friendly and helpful with your questions. I will now shake an angry fist to God that I do not have a nice lawn to plant flowers, a garden, rows of herbs and other various planty-goodness. There are tons of adorable garden decorations. Glowing orbs to stick among your flowers? Kitschy flamingo head on a stick? Huge leaping iron frogs that I so would have bought had they not been $99? CHECK. There are rooms of seeds, plant feed, fertilizer and anything else you'd need for home and garden. There's also a section of soaps and lotions that all smelled ridiculously good. And honestly? Everyone working here is SO.NICE. The creaky wooden floors and the rooms full of natural light on a sunshiney Saturday morning make for such a welcoming environment. Can I move in? This place smells incredible. Spicy and warm and earthy - walking in, you're hit with a wall of all of these glorious scents. Soak it in! The building is old and slightly labyrinthine. On a busy day, you have to be very patient as you wend your way through the throng. It's well worth it. Seeds, garden tools, plants, garden decor, rubs, spices. It's like a carnival for the senses. This place is awesome! I was looking for a BBQ spice place because this was my 1st visit to Kansas City and I was determined to come home with BBQ sauce and rubs/spices. Who knew you find a place with all the spices/rubs, seeds, feed, pots, garden art etc. So unique. Anyhow, came a couple weeks before Christmas and the presentation was awesome for spice and rubs alone. They prepackaged their rubs with a Christmas bow for less than 20.00 and created small spice packs arranged like a Christmas tree for around 10.00. We bought out the store and gave as gifts and they were a hit! The staff at Planters were so accommodating they gave us samples of their rubs, told us what her favorite was gave suggestions it was simply great customer service. I had forgotten how much I love this store! We stopped in to get a fern. Couldn't help ourselves, purchased some chocolate covered cherries, licorice jelly beans and some spices! The store is full of gardening treasures, but just walking in makes your want to scurry into the back and stick up on spices! The smells are amazing! I average a couple visits a month, and they always have what I need - bulbs, soil, pots, herbs, spices, tea, spray paint, gifts, etc. Super friendly knowledgeable staff.
