Urban Mining recently moved to Midtown. We love they are so close. What a great place to find a something unique that you weren't looking for. Your treasure could be just around the corner. For instance we went on Saturday to check out the new location. While shopping, we turned the corner and there was kites, not ordinary kites, but kites from Hi Flyer a company from Decatur, IL where I am from and when my mom worked before I was born. They are the old fashioned paper kites that our Grandparents used to fly. Anyway a true treasure for us. You never know what you might find and you never know what treasure you will find. I am in love!!!! Urban Mining is now my favorite store in the entire universe. Located in Westport in the lower level of the Meyer Building (the entrance is in the back), Urban Mining is 3000 square feet of pure amazingness! It's a thrift store, antique shop and arts and crafts fair all rolled into one. There is so much stuff packed into every inch, it took us two hours to get through the store (check out my photos for an example!). Some favorite features: - Vimsey!! Vimsey is "whimsey plus vintage" which is junk art--it features cut-outs, game pieces, vintage images, jewels, flowers, etc. Classes are offered as well, see their website for details. - My Paper Garden by Lisa Presley, which is old maps and postcards remade into wallets, stationery and purses. A fun way to recycle! - TONS of vintage handbags and jewelry (a major weakness of mine) The only bad thing about this store--they're only open three days a month; the first weekend only. My favorite "antiques" in Kansas City! It`s just an amazing store! I don`t realy like Grandma antiques (oak, brass, quilts yuck), but Urban Mining I LOVE! I have got SO many wonderful finds there. I have gotten 2 eames chairs for around $30 apeice, many little things, decorartions! I just LOVE it there. The people are very friendly and helpful. I NEVER miss a first firday! OK. I admit it. It's a pretty cool place. Even though I don't really like the whole 'antique mall thing' that my wife totally loves. I indulge her, and wind up in some pretty desolate and sketchy antique stores, where if there is no coverage for my iPhone, I might be inclined to drink a giant slurpee and wait for the sugar rush and brain freeze - just to make it until the point where she is ready to leave. But Urban Mining is actually a pretty neat place. The people there are uber-friendly, not overly pushy yet attentive, and the quality of the wares seems to be high. We found some glasses for ourselves and for my mother-in-law, and my wife has been several times without me, and loves the store. She also found some hip food/water bowls for our dog, and those are great. And I needed no external/internal stabilizing factors to mitigate my antique store phobia. So, 5 stars. :) read more

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm not the biggest fan of antique malls. I stopped into Urban Mining a couple of years ago when they were just in the lower level of the building and would have rated it at two to three stars. I didn't return until just last week, and boy o boy how this place has changed. They have expanded and have taken over the entire upper floor of the building too. The booths are not crowded together and just packed full of crap. This gives everyone room to spread out and breath a little bit. Since they are only open a couple days out of the month, vendors seem to showcase really good stuff instead of booths full of sad trinkets from times of yesteryear that sit around until that one in a thousand collector happens to walk by the previously stated sad trinket and ponders the price and decides to buy the one brass bald eagle statue, leaving it's companion piece to sit there for another two years before someone finds their treasure in the antique hay stack! It's not like that at all. Or at least it wasn't this month. The prices seemed really reasonable. I don't know if it's because of the last couple years of a slower economy, but I had to do some double takes at how reasonable the prices seemed to be on most of the merch. There were a lot of people shopping and bringing some really good energy into this bumping little antique mall. I will see if I feel the same way next month, because I can't wait to get back and check them out again. I can't believe I can even say that! read more

I'm going to cut to the chase: Urban Mining is perhaps one of the most affordable antique deals in town and you *will* be able to find something here that you love, that won't set you back a few paychecks. I really enjoy shopping at Urban Mining - as with most vintage/antique stores, you never know what you're going to find, but there are some real treasures here, for some very reasonable prices. There's really not a high markup on most items, and as an added bonus, they offer 10% off of everything on Sunday as well as refreshments on First Friday evening. We don't stop in every month, but when we do shop here, there has always been a very good turnover of merchandise, so the same things aren't always for sale. And thankfully (for me, anyway), unlike other first-weekend antique places, there's not a lot of "shabby chic" for sale, either - the items at Urban Mining are generally not painted over and "weathered" to look older than they are - most of the stuff on offer is real deal vintage. Everything is very well organized, and a lot of the booths do a bit of a theme for each month or any upcoming holidays, which is fun. I do have a few favorite booths, but have found that looking around each one is my best bet for finding my latest must-have treasure. We have purchased everything from jewelry and art to furniture at Urban Mining, and gotten some very good deals. Our largest (and my favorite) purchase was a barrister bookcase in nice condition with a beautiful leaded glass panel; and the staff delivered it to our house for a reasonable fee, which was not only convenient, but also took the stress out of figuring how on earth we would get it home. We have also brought my parents here when they were visiting Kansas City, and my father especially LOVED the store. They ended up making several purchases of their own, and want to go back the next time they're in town. Urban Mining has become one of my favorite places to visit the first weekend of the month, and even if I'm not looking for anything in particular, I still enjoy stopping in...just to see what might be on offer. read more

This is my favorite vintage and used store in KC. I've bought great tables, kids books, old video games, art, gifts...all at this place and all unique or one of a kind. The best finds go pretty quick, Thursday night and Friday, but there's bound to be something interesting for your tastes. If not, wait a month and the entire store has changed. They're only open the weekends of First Fridays. Can be difficult to wait to go back, for sure, but it sure males the experience feel cool and special. Staff have been so polite and accommodating here...negotiating prices on Sundays and arranging for picking up items later. And my three year old absolutely loves exploring the place. Would recommend to any antique or vintage fan. read more

I'm not even going to try to describe how happy urban Mining makes me. I will just say that the $30, beautiful, solid wood, Zenith cabinet record player that i bought here filled a giant hole in my heart. (And it was also the man and my first piece of bought furniture together, awww cute, right?) It's an AMAZING find. And the crazy part is, that I have amazing finds every time I go! Like many other antique/vintage/used stores, there are separate and individual run booths, so prices and product vary. The Urban Mining Sale only takes place during the first weekend of every month. I like to go Friday and Sunday, because Friday you get first pick, and Sunday everything is 10% off... so if you see something that you could maybe live without on Friday, leave it up to fate, and if it's still there Sunday you can't feel guilty for buying it cheaper! And if you happen to be a doll collector, I bought $200 worth of dolls here one day, and every once in a while there will be a shit ton of great dolls, so check it out! read more

I love the variety of items for sale and the staff!!! They have a really large selection with various vendors. I like that it's all displayed nicely and has a clean feel to it instead of that feeling where you walk into a place and it seems like they just piled stuff on top of stuff with no real thought to how easily you would be able to look at the items for sale. read more

While the bottom floor is a disaster. Most of the stalls on that floor are not well curated at all and it seems to be a lot of junk thrown together. The top floor on the the other hand is awesome! Much more organized, and better pieces including furniture and art, not just random chachkis plucked from estate sales after grandma died. There was a ton of Mid Century modern furniture in mostly great condition. I will definitely be back! Also 10% off on Sundays. read more

This is a pretty cool store, but beware of their prices. I recently purchased a hanging chair there only to find out when I got home it was priced over its retail value. I purchased the chair for $90, can buy it new for $70 (is this even legal?). I don't believe this was intentional, however when I called to discuss this in hopes of reconciliation ($20 credit sounds fair right?), I was pretty much told, "sorry, tough luck. All is fair in resale." It is sad that a store this cool has such poor customer service... I've been shopping here for years. read more

This place has yet to disappoint. The vendors edit well, and things are priced to move. I am not really into shabby chic, and it actually drives me nuts that there seems to be this trend of painting furniture some god-awful color rather than say, refinishing it, but there's less of that seen here. Lots of little treasures from different eras, there's usually good music playing, and everyone who works there is friendly and helpful. I get really sad when I am out of town the first weekend of the month and don't get to hit Urban Mining, it's definitely not to be missed if you like shopping for antiques. read more

Found this treasure this last weekend! I had seen an article somewhere that they were moving, so decided I better make my way there. The good news is they will be at the current location through January. And they're just moving a few blocks away in February. How have I not know about this place??? I made my way to the lower level entrance to a spectacular space. Mid century, re-purposed, antiques, primitives. industrial, fun and weird stuff. I seriously could've spent the whole day here. I bought a small 70s clock, some super cool roly poly glasses (think Mad Men), a couple of hankies for my mom and a beautiful, original painting of Paris. Prices are very reasonable. Fun things I saw: A foo dog incense burner, a beautiful art glass bowl, an awesome mid century bar, several really old, cool cookbooks and some way cool lamps. On the first floor staff is friendly and walk the floor and take items to hold for you while you continue shopping and even with a crowd at the checkout, it seems to move pretty quickly. The upper floor is mostly large mid century furniture, with some other items squeezed in. Lots of original artwork and lamps. Both floors are beautiful. The only downside was we couldn't find anyone to take our items from us and went to what we thought was the checkout and no one was there. We had to drag out stuff downstairs to put on hold. We kept shopping and had a couple of more items and went back to the checkout and again no one was there. Asked a floor person for help and they sent us back to the counter with no one there. A little confusing. Again, dragged our stuff to the downstairs area where they were quick and efficient. I'll cut them some slack. Maybe they were shorthanded? We'll be back again next month. They are only open the first weekend of the month. read more

This store is jam packed with good junk. I'm a picker and so I look for good prices, so this is a favorite because the prices are quite decent and there is a good selection. The ambiance of the store is very much country antique shop, so it's not my absolute favorite, but when I'm looking for items for my jewelry, I can almost always find something here, which I really appreciate. Urban Mining is, hands down, the best and most well-priced place to find furniture and home decor in Kansas City. My parents live in Kansas City and every time I come home, I hope it's a first weekend so we can go. I furnished half of my post-college apartment with incredibly well-priced items from this store, and this was before they opened the upstairs. They have a lot of beautiful mid-century modern pieces, but also art deco pieces and plenty of shabby chic. Many of the booths are continually curated and there is always something new to find. I'm a huge bargain shopper, a lover of flea markets, and Urban Mining compares the wonderful prices of a flea market with the excellent curation of an antique store. I'm continually impressed and always fall in love with them! read more

Ok, so I did the West Bottoms thing a couple of times with friends and every store looked the same (lots of painted furniture), so I wasn't too eager when they dragged me to Urban Mining. Well, I'm converted. This place is truly a vintage store. Mid-century furniture and lamps, cool filing cabinets, retro kitchen and housewares. They have everything. Lots of re-purposed items: An old cart made into a table, old apple baskets made into lamps, bar carts, console stereos, an old fridge painted and made into a wine holder/rack (so cool). Vintage clothing, jewelry, hats, gloves, oh my! Old doors and windows, door knobs, maps, funky barware. A great place to buy furniture and gifts. Seriously, they have everything. They are only open once a month (1st Friday weekends) and you see lots of different stuff each month. I even see different stuff when I go back on Sunday after my Thursday night visit (yes, open on Thursday night). Sunday is 10% off everything in the store. The prices are very reasonable. Staff is friendly and very helpful. They carry your stuff to your car, arrange delivery or they hold your stuff until you can arrange pickup. Sometimes it's crowded (that's why I go on Thursday nights), but the staff check people out quickly and efficiently. It's obvious they love what they do. I bought a very old filing cabinet and the vendor happened to be there and gave me the whole history on it. Now I can do the same when my guests ooh and aah over it. Urban Mining (located on the eastern fringe of Westport) has opened a expansive upper floor to their excellent downstairs showroom----the shoppe (open the first week-end of every month) now has no peers in the vintage antique and collectible market. Every aspect of display is well considered, the merchandise is nonpareil in selection, the parking is quite adequate, the staff non-intrusive, and the whole experience is pleasant beyond description. Whether one is trolling for a mid-century treasure, a piece of affordable art, or just that one-of-a-kind antique find---Urban Mining is the place to comfortably shop. Mary Rouse (shop owner, and business coordinator) has taken the experience of Kansas City vintage shopping to the next level of innovative (and enjoyable) fun.
