The food at this restaurant is so diverse, yet so spectacular. I loved nearly every dish I've had during the couple of times I've taken my family to this location. Mulitple styles of ramen, seafood and veggies on skewers, poke bowls, donburi. This location has all the staples of Japanese cuisine, and these dishes are some of the best I've ever tasted. I didn't think I'd like scallions on a skewer, but they went the extra mile in loading it up with deep, roasted flavor. As far as I know, this is the only place in Houston to get Okonomiyaki (fried Japanese cabbage pancake). You are definitely missing out on this location. read more

This place is in a little shopping strip on Richmond but don't let that fool you. This place has so many authentic Japanese selections that you can't find anywhere else. The jellyfish small plate is delicious and savory if you're looking for something unique. It has a nice crunch and compliments the other dishes well. The okonomiyki comes with thick cuts of pork/bacon and is a slightly heavier option if you're really hungry. If you're somewhere in the middle, the chicken karaage is crispy, perfectly fried, and delicious. For my main course I always get the chicken katsu don or any of the ramens. The katsu don comes with a yummy, non-overpowering curry and fresh slices of tomato. The chicken is always well-cooked and has a nice crunch. The ramens have nice, rich broths and will leave you super full. The parking is a little tricky sometimes around busy hours, but if you wait a few minutes I've always found a spot. read more

I'm sure it was hella authentic because Japanese food doesn't have too many bold and bright flavors to begin with, and the ramen fit the bill. I ordered the seafood ramen, spicy. It was spicy but the broth was lacking. It was slightly salty, with hint of soy/seafood stock but otherwise, it couldn't just been clear vegetable broth for all I know. And there were no table condiments to soup it up. The clams that were frozen at some point and because the broth lacked flavor, the free burned shined through. The shrimp were not seasoned. Simply boiled and thrown in the bowl. The noodles were alright. The little grilled dishes I had were good and the accompanying sauces were tasty. If I were to come back, I'd just order those but the serving sizes were so small for $3.50. I'd have to rack up quite a bill to get full, so I probably just won't be back at all. Most dishes are good. Some are great. All are pretty expensive. Yokushi Robata is a kushiyaki (though informally misrepresented as "yakitori") place that unfortunately falls into that trope of kushiyakiya's and izakaya's becoming posh high-end exclusive low-light gourmet ateliers in the U.S. for some reasons. You know, places for desperate salarymen to drink some sake and drown their sorrows, now complete with light so dim you won't be able to read the menu without your iPhone's flashlight on. (No, that was serious. Do bring some flashlights.) So, being a grilled-stuff-on-a-stick place, you'd expect their grilled stuff on a stick to be good and for that, they mostly are. Mostly. Didn't try the chicken skin myself, but my friend said it was just ok. Personally, I'd just nom the chicken tsukune's. Their cheese tsukune was the tastiest, cheesiest, most calorie-packed thing I've digested all month. Too bad each skewer is like a single ounce worth of food each for about 5 dollars. Speaking of skewers, if you have extra sorrows you'd like to drown out that day, you can also order an unaju for the price of 2 unagi skewers plus 2 dollars for the rice and oshinko, but you get 2 unagi skewers on some rice and oshinko. The eel itself is good, but Domoishi in U of H also has equally good eel, and a lot more of it, for the price that YR charges for 2 skewers plus some rice and oshinko. Their ankimo is good, their eggplant is way too bland, their chikuwa is great if hot but sh-tty if cold. The last thing to talk about was the ramen, which we were too busy eating to take a picture of because it was that good. Honestly, the whole yakitori thing works, but they might do better if they advertised themselves as a casual ramen spot if you ask me. Their ramen is aru-dente, their tare is great, their tonkotsu supple and their kurobuta quite oishii. I just got out of Otaku Food Fes that day. (We also forgot to take a picture of the kinmedai. That was pretty good too, and you do get an entire fish for about 20 bucks.) TL;DR Texas-quality BBQ but Japanese at French prices. The ramen is actually not that bad, but I did get too used to the hypothetical sound of my wallet crying at that point. read more

It's a nice little Japanese restaurant that serves authentic Japanese food along with skewers , ramen , and poke bowls . Went for dinner and had okonomiyaki, unagi, tonkatsu miso ramen and pork katsu with curry. The okonomiyaki was good but a disappointing serving size for the price. Same could be said for the unagi. The tonkatsu was pretty bland and unimpressive. Noodles taste just like the fresh packaged ones from hmart. The katsu was fairly lean and borderline dry but still good. The curry tasted exactly like the golden curry brand... which is great for a quick weeknight meal at home but not anything special at a restaurant. Service was good. Overall the food was all passable but not a place I intend to go back. We waited an hour for our food to come out.. and there was a long wait too. Pleasantly surprise experience. I was initially not quite sure how serious about the Yakitori. It turns out that it is very good. They have many different items including Poke and Ramen; however, I have not tried them. I can tell you for Yakitori, is a great place to visit. The ambiance is Izakaya in Shinjuku with foreigners. Cheese curry rice took me by surprise because I didn't know what to expect but the combination of cheese, beef, curry sauce, and rice was perfect. The broth was flavorless and there were no condiments on the table to allow us to flavor it ourselves. The poke was alright according to my friend. The chicken dumpling I felt needed a much stronger sauce. It terms of taste a lot of the food was quite bland and I'm not sure why. The ramen came out looking like pho. On a Sunday evening, I hit up Yokushi Robata with a friend. They're located in a shopping center with several other businesses so parking shouldn't be a problem. Yokushi isn't a large restaurant but it has an authentic, Japanese feel. This is coming from someone who's been to Tokyo. I will say it was pretty cold in the restaurant. To the point where we wore our jackets for the duration of our meal. Yokushi is a tapas style restaurant. We started off with some sparkling sake and Japanese beer. From there, we shared a bunch of tapas: the mushrooms, chicken thigh skewer, pork ribs, teriyaki beef, Japanese scallops, and one of the shrimp options. This is a robata so many of the options are grilled and marinated. Delicious and relatively healthy. Every single dish we had was amazing. They only tapa which was a notch below were the Japanese scallops which were pretty small and not too flavorful. Service was good and the food comes out pretty fast. Second visit here and has a great experience again! Best ochazuke I have had and the presentation even got upgraded since my last visit. Although not relatively small, there are a lot of businesses with their reserved parking. Additional parking can be found in the back. There is also a huge parking lot across the street that is probably your best option. Inside was spacious enough with low lightings. Chill atmosphere with subtle decors. Their menu included ramen, skewers, and other Japanese cuisines. The skewers only came with one quantity. Some of my favorites were the lamb chop and beef with wasabi. The meat on the lamb chop was really tender, taste the best with the sauce it came with. Beef with wasabi was also tender, can hardly taste the wasabi which is what I prefer. I would skip the Japanese scallops, not as appetizing as it look. Ramen broth was nicely seasoned, not the best but decent. Good portion and ramen noodles weren't soggy. For more filling items: go with the baked curry beef. It's rice underneath a layer of cheesy beef. Maybe it was too much cheese, but I didn't mind. It went great with the rice and beef. The Okonimiyaki was a special item that I tried for the first time. It's basically a Japanese-style pancake with cabbage and pork. There's moving bonito flakes on top. Pretty good for my first time trying it. Overall, service was friendly. Waitress checked on us frequently and refill our water. I wouldn't mind coming back again. read more

First time here after YouTube put a Japanese okonomayaki video in my feed. Because we live in the world's greatest eating city I went to Yelp and looked up that word in the search field and found this place. One thing about teppanyaki is that it's a cultural eating experience. You order a beer or sake and eat essentially, Japanese tapas. Many of the little dishes are like $5 and cheaper, larger ramen bowls are $10-16. People said the service was slow on reviews??? Wtf? Not even...we got great service as we were a table of 8. We ordered an okonomayaki and split it at the table. It was devoured in minutes. Everything we ordered was perfect.
