Searching online for somewhere that was just a little bit different for a special occasion, we came across Le Petit Cochon and liked the look of the seafood choices on the menu. It's just a few steps off the main drag in Radnor Street (opposite the end of Kelvin Way), and seems to have been a burger bar in a former life. It was a Monday night, so they weren't exactly busy, and so the service was friendly and attentive, and we were soon tucking into our starters. We had the hot smoked salmon and asparagus as a starter, and straight away I realised that the food was going to be great, as the asparagus was cooked to perfection. Often the ends of the stems can get a bit stringy, but not here. Not stringy and not limp, just perfect crunch. For mains, we both had the pollock, which is a fish you don't see that much here, although it is becoming more popular. The portion size seemed a bit small, but in retrospect it was just right as it left room for some pudding! Again, the veg were cooked to 'al dente' perfection. The whole was washed down with a half-carafe of very dry white wine from their extensive wine list, and we left replete and happy.

Mostly that happens because they're quite a specialist wine bar and it turns out that if you actually know your stuff about wines most bottles end up being more than £15 and I'm just not darned rich enough to regularly enjoy expensive fancy wines. Still, as a treat, I love The Wine Library. I now love it even more, because last Friday they launched their sister bar, just upstairs from their main bar, The Gin Lounge. Oh yes. I noticed that they were advertising the launch on The Wine Library's Facebook page and was delighted that I had no plans for the Friday evening because I would quite possibly have had to cancel them. On Friday I was going to the launch of The Gin Lounge. We arrived at about 8 pm and things were already getting busy. There were no spare tables so we decided to make a beeline for the bar and figure out that problem later. The gin menu was extensive. I chose and Arbikie Kirsty's Gin and tonic, with a vague notion of working through the menu alphabetically. This is a Scottish gin that is recommended with tonic (The Gin Lounge favours Fevertree, as is right and proper) and lemon and blueberries to garnish. It was entirely too drinkable. At this point, P sheepishly mentioned that he wasn't in a gin mood and asked for a Peroni instead. It happened that The Gin Lounge was involved in promoting Peroni's new gluten-free beer and had some bottles available free to try. Not that P is gluten or wheat intolerant, but he said it was good, and that he couldn't taste the difference at all. This upstairs bar is quite a comfy space. It might not be huge, but it's easy to see why it has served as a function room for parties and wine tastings in the past. When we eventually did get a seat I was very comfortable. P admired the wine barrel tables and I enjoyed the view from the second-floor window. On a less busy occasion, I could easily imagine myself losing track of time here. A little later I tried a Jaggi citrus gin and tonic, served with lemon. Clearly, I had abandoned my alphabetical plans. This is also a Scottish gin and also delicious, but somehow spicier than the Arbikie gin. I think I preferred the Arbikie but I have a feeling that when it came to ordering it would really depend on my mood. I was pleased to have selected two gins, almost completely at random, and to have discovered two that tasted so different. I was also lucky enough to speak briefly to a gentleman who was handing out tasters of Valentia gin and tonic, garnished with pink grapefruit. Now this one was fascinating - it's a Spanish gin, made with sugar cane and only sold in Scotland. Go figure. Oh, and it's now totally an obsession of mine. I need to pick up a bottle asap. It's easy on the botanicals, vaguely sweet the way rum or cachaca might be, and is perfect with that grapefruit they were using. It's pretty much the ideal summer drink. Before we left we were kindly given a goody bag containing a Peroni glass, a small can of Fevertree tonic (oh well now I'll have to buy a bottle of Valentia...), a book about gin, and a collection of flyers and discount codes for local businesses, including the Wine Library. I've since been back several times and every time I visit it seems to be that little bit better. I'm nowhere near working my way through their gin menu but they do now offer a few varieties of Martini as well and, obviously, I had to slow down to try them. Obviously.

I was just after a bottle of wine to take back to Glasgow so I just picked something from the fridge. Prices are quite high but it's not your standard supermarket wines so you'll get something a bit different. I also got a packet of locally made cheese sablé biscuits which were AMAZING and I scoffed the whole lot in one go (woops). I'll definitely be back here for a classy drinking spot next time I'm in Edinburgh. What a great addition to the Arches area.

And he was just brilliant really, explaining the drinks to us and such like. Vino is kinda like a combination between a wine bar and an off-license. So you can buy wine etc to drink, as you would normally. You can also buy products from the shelves, and pay 'corkage' to drink it in-house. They have an impressive range of craft beers for example. They also have a particularly good range of gin, and there were also a few dark rums which caught my eye. I'm not sure if you can buy the spirits and drink them there and then, I'd missed that part of the explanation, but you probably wouldn't want to do that anyway. They have great products that you don't often see elsewhere, for example the new Eden Mill 'mixology project'. We tried the 'basil smash hop gin' and the 'berry bramble love gin'. I also lingered over some Chocolate Tree chocolate bars, but decided against it as I wouldn't have been able to resist trying them and that would have spoiled me for my imminent dinner. We were sat inside the main shop area, and there is also outside area where you can have your drinks. Maybe not so much in winter, but nice during the 'summer'. It was a quick visit as we were heading off for dinner, but I would definitely like to return to Vino, for a more leisurely visit (you could while away many hours here) and to browse their wide range of spirits and craft beers.
