I also did health coaching with the owner, Katy, and went to a talk offered by one of the Barre teachers. With these offerings, VITA has changed my relationship with my body for the better. I appreciate the holistic approach to health/exercise and the sweet community VITA has created. Every community needs a VITA in it. I'm so grateful that mine does!

It's always a plus when you can combine torture with pleasure. I love one-off workshop type events vs regularly scheduled programming so when I saw this event on the newsletter, I recruited my friends and off we went. Payment online is a little confusing as is finding and paying for the special events Vs the scheduled on their website. These are under the "soul" category. We did not have to bring anything to class, but towel and water were optional. The sticky mats were provided along with weights and stretching bands. There's even a water dispenser on the wall like they have in airports. The unisex restroom in the back is large and clean. It sits opposite of a daycare room. Parking is street parking or you can park at or take the BART and walk up a few blocks. I had been to vita when they first opened 6+ years ago for a Pilates/yoga/barre class. I remember it being hard, so katy, the owner, who teaches the power classes must have been teaching, and I hadn't been back until now! Make sure to wear your tank top because the room is heated and only gets steamier with the huffing bodies. Otherwise the studio is bright and clean. There is a little merchandise to buy at the front and cubbies for your stuff. We all wiped down our mats after class with the wipes provided. The acoustics are terrible so when the music is on, and people are talking before, and after it gets very that you have to shout. After the 45 minute class, a foldout table was set up in the middle of the room with cubes of cheese, bread, crackers, salami and cups of wine. There was plenty of wine and some nonalcoholic, but the food was wiped clean. The tasting was educational and Katy is as passionate about her cheese pairings as she is about her exercise.

It's exhilarating, it's a little scary because it's so different, but it's addicting. I had muscles hurt the next day that I didn't even realize I was using. The best part about it (besides the fact that you can go flying through the air) is that my knees and ankles didn't absorb the impact like it would in a normal jump or burpee or jog. This is great for all people, big, small, athletic or not, if you try something and you don't quite get it, it's ok you're tethered to the beams above. I made a reservation ahead of time, I did a drop in "Intro to Bungee" class $45 because I was just visiting from out of town, but everytime I'm in the bay area I am gonna come back because it was that awesome. Everyone is required to do the Intro class first, and even though my instructor (shout out Malcolm, he was pure awesome-ness!) said I could move onto Level 1 next time, I would take the intro class again if I had friends that want to try it too. I did get to see some of the Level 1 and Level 2 moves, which looked really hard to do, but THAT IS MY GOAL! I wanna be a flyer! I couldn't stop thinking about this class for the entire plane ride back and then several days after I got back home. P.S. You do have to jump on the scale before class because they need to know how much weight the bungee needs to support. If they went by my drivers license weight or what I *thought* I weighed that day, the bungees would not have supported me and I would've fallen flat on my face.

They followed up with a discounted class, and my friend pushed me to join with her again, so boom. The 60 minute workout was half tread and half rowing/strength. Due to me being completely new, I decided to get a wearable with my membership. It was originally $199 but I asked if I can get a student discount which brought it down to $189. The wearable was a pretty steep price and the person who checked me out did not tell me about the May promo they had going on (iirc half off a wearable) so I decided to get the wearable, towel, bag, and OTF water bottle pack which was around $129, which I would not have done without the wearable. I saw the May promo on the back of the bathroom door after class. There were times that I needed help same day so I texted the front staff hours before the class and they disregarded my question, which was disappointing for my first good impressions of the staff. Looking out from a monetary perspective (not informing a new joiner about promos) vs actually caring about a member (informing new joiner about promos and texting answers back to questions) would have made me return to OTF in the future, but as the saying goes, you can only skin a sheep once. I would join with the South Bay OTF studios as they seem less opportunistic, but again, the coaches here were amazing!

I've worked with Dan Peven, a Certified Kettlebell Trainer, at CS Fit for almost a year and…read morecouldn't be happer. My strength and athletic performance, not to mention my mobility, is above and beyond what I ever expected. Dan combines the power of Russian kettlebell weight training with the brilliance of Z-Health, an exercise program designed to re-train the nervous system for maximum performance and pain-free movement. His demeanor is positive, encouraging, and motivational; he is never condescending. That went a long way with someone like me, who could never take instruction from those holier-than-thou, elitist, fitness junkie-type trainers. Before training with Dan, the most movement I ever did was the occasional month-long yoga kick and a good hike every few weeks. Then I took up rock climbing and quickly realized I needed to step up my game if I ever wanted to improve. Dan paid attention to my fitness goals and designed a program for me that not only built lean, toned muscle in my legs, arms, and abs, but actually diminished some minor elbow pain I had developed from intense climbing. I also have to mention that with all of that core strength training, my butt looks great too. :) I've never considered myself "strong" or "an athlete," but Dan insisted from the beginning that I'm both. And now I believe him!

I emailed Dan a letter that basically said "I am a 59 year old woman. I have terrible knees......Can I do this?" Dan's response was very supportive and I thought I could take a few private lessons and then see how I felt. We started working together with Dan teaching Z-health movements that help stretch every part of the body. 3 lessons later, Z-health was a natural part of what I did at work every day he began teaching me kettlebell exercises. Well, months later, I can't believe the difference in my body. I was definitely not in bad shape.....I worked out every day either on an eliptical machine, walking or doing bikram yoga. I was uncertain that I would have time to include kettlebell classes while continuing all my other activity and also working full-time. But I continued to swing the kettlebells with Dan and joined a saturday class with other folks. I now swing kettlebells 4 to 5 times a week. My knees are the healthiest they have been in a long long time! But, the difference in how my body feels is AMAZING. Kudo's to Dan. Without his patience (still!) , knowlege and encouragement, I would never be in this place. He has started a 6am bootcamp 3 days a week in Berkeley and it is a blast. He always shows up on time and gives individual attention to the details to prevent any injuries. Can't ask for much more:):)
