Deadlifts. Cheering each other on. Adding weight each rep!
    Katrina R.

I hit a gold mine with Sequoia Crossfit. I feel strongly about the fact that Matt truly knows what he's doing. I had the misunderstanding that crossfit was ONLY Olympic lifting but Matt has us working on EVERYTHING. We run, we lift, we carry, we jump, we push ourselves! This entire experience has been so well rounded. Exactly what I need. I get bored so fast and Matt had us on our toes. When I first started, my ultimate goal was to lose body fat. To look better, to feel better about how I looked. I've been working out for about 5 years on my own and a few months ago I hit a giant plateau. I was no longer excited about going to the gym, ultimately bored. So i decided seven weeks ago to try the 6 week challenge. I honestly had no intention of falling in love with any of this. But guess what? Ya For the first time in my LIFE (yes THAT dramatic but its true) the way I LOOK, the flab on my stomach, my too small of an ass, my super jiggly thighs has never mattered less. WHY? I want to be strong, I want to challenge myself, I want to grow, I want to beat the person next to me! I get my ass kicked! I know in time all of the asthetic aspect of my goals will come. But i just FEEL GOOD! I'm doing something amazing for myself, im pushing myself, im being social. If this gym only focused on strength or only focused on cardiovascular then I would definitely have gotten bored by now. But that's not the case, if you're curious at all, Sundays are free for new people. You really have no reason not to at least try! For anyone concerned about "will this be too hard for me?" Matt can scale down a work out to help build your strength until you can do it at a higher intensity. And the same goes for anyone who's worried they won't be challenged. Like I said before he'll kick your ass. Anyone can work out with us :) Cost was a huge reason I stayed at planet fitness for so long lol. But I see this as an investment to my health. I plan to be active well into my 80's and 90's. this is a forever commitment I've made to myself. With that, I only deserve the kind of gym thats gna push me to be better and stronger both mentally and physically. Lastly, SOCIALIZING, I don't do it enough. I am the queen of home bodies, and this brings me out of that funk. Super grateful for it Ok bye

This is my gym! I started here for the 6 week challenge last year and I always knew i'd have to come back to be a permanent member. Now is that time! I've just joined permanently and after only 2 weeks back I'm already feeling amazing! Matt and Juan are great at what they do, so encouraging and challenging. Matt never pushes anyone past their limits and modifies workouts according to each individuals capabilities. WOD's always make you break a sweat and nothing quite feels better than strength gains and weight losses (if that's what you're into). This is the perfect gift to yourself if you love a challenge or want to keep your strength up for hiking and other physical activity. CrossFit is such an awesome (and my most favorite) way to get a workout in. No more waiting for gym equipment to be available at the huge, busy gym. Gone are the days of sweaty mean ogling my workout! Get your swole on sans peep-show and Treat yo self!

I started at Sequoia CrossFit as a 6-week challenger and signed on as a monthly member right after finishing. Sequoia CrossFit has everything a novice (or advanced) CrossFit-er needs: two sweet gym pups to snuggle before and after classes, loud old school hip hop music to train and dance to, incredibly friendly gym mates and incredibly supportive coaches. I learned how to do movements within the four walls of this super rad warehouse-esque gym that I never thought I'd even attempt, like power snatches or rope climbs, to name a few. But Coach Matt has definitely been the highlight of my CrossFit experience! His hour sessions will have you on the floor dripping sweat and his jokes will surely have you laughing. Thanks Matt for helping me grow in confidence and reach my fitness goals!

Pilates: I love attending the reformer classes, particularly Alba's and Jessica's, but I've attended most if not all of the instructors' classes and they've all been great. The weekend classes do get kind of quick so it's better to book in advance. Gym: Clean, never packed (at least when I go). I always find space to stretch with no issue and have never had to wait for what I need. People put their weights back. There are spray bottles and cloths to wipe what you use after. The bathrooms are clean, and the red light sauna is a treat (honestly my deciding factor for adding the membership lol). I've yet to use the cold plunge or the showers. You get $10 off when you have more than 1 membership. I had a billing issue in the beginning and they were very responsive and helpful. All together I pay $164/mo for both. The lack of a parking lot is a mild inconvenience, but street parking is hardly an issue with all the residential streets with free parking around Park. Great gym!!

Unfortunately, my experience trying to sign up afterward was frustrating. Communication was slow and inconsistent; I often had to send multiple follow-up texts to get responses, and my questions about membership options and class access weren't answered clearly. I didn't receive straightforward answers until a phone call finally happened. During that conversation, I was told that certain classes were advanced and not appropriate for me, and that ongoing drop-ins weren't offered. I was also repeatedly steered toward personal training. Later, I received newsletters advertising beginner classes, which seemed inconsistent with what I had been told. While the workout itself was enjoyable, the lack of clear, timely communication and transparency around membership options made it hard to feel comfortable committing. If you value clear communication and flexibility, it's worth asking very detailed questions up front.

I've been coming here since I turned 34 (I'm 37 now, so let's just say my attendance record here is more consistent than my dating life), and it's become my second home. My happy place? Boxing with Nico on Thursday nights and Andy on Saturday mornings. They work us hard--from the bags to the mitts--and you can tell they genuinely love what they do, which makes you want to work harder too. The vibe here is energetic, supportive, and community-driven, even if you're like me--assertive, rebellious, and just a little defiant. I've made it my mission to talk back during workouts, roast the trainers mid-burpee, and encourage others to listen to their hearts when Nico, Andy, or any of the other amazing trainers push us like soulless robots. (They're not soulless, I promise--just slightly sadistic, in the best way.) If you think lifting weights and working out is drab, you haven't done it here. The community is what makes every drop of sweat and near-tear worth it. The trainers truly care about your transformation, not just physically but in how you see yourself and your own strength. They've created a space where you feel seen, pushed, and celebrated, even when you're lying on the mat wondering why you thought a 6pm class after work was a good idea. Shoutout to the trainers Ming, Angelo, Warren, and Tori, who keep the energy high, the encouragement real, and the workouts spicy. And to owner Terrell, who's built a place that feels like home (if home had kettlebells, a power rack and trainers encouraging you on while you question your life choices). If you're looking for a place to get strong, laugh while suffering, and meet some of the best humans in Oakland, come here. And if you see someone talking back to the trainers while smiling and refusing to quit, that's probably me. Come say hi, and let's complain about landmines together.
