My search for Christmas Chinese food led me here. Takeout was ready quickly, and this place does not do dine-in. The vegetarian options were fairly basic. My ma po tofu was spicy and overall had a more robust flavor than I was expecting with an extra hearty bit of mushrooms as well. The other things I got weren't that impressive: a spring roll was msotly cabbage and a fried wrapper which was fine enough with mustard sauce. The dumplings were a bit soggy inside and were again mostly cabbage and carrots. My noodles came with broccoli I didn't want and even after picking that out, they left a bit of an odd aftertaste. Overall, I got what I came for, but I wouldn't be likely to return if it wasn't Christmas where this was one of the few places open. read more

Contrary to the name, we dined in at one of several mismatched tables and chairs that seemed to be an afterthought. The place is dark dreary, with pale yellow walls, open ductwork, poor lighting gaudy Tet decorations and some of those lighted from behind panels with pictures of the different dishes, but they were unlighted. There were refrigerated cabinets full of sodas. One case had a hand-lettered sign saying "PLEASE" I suppose that meant "serve yourself" There were lots of poorly maintained potted plants near the door to assure a poor first impression. The little strip mall it is in is also poorly maintained. The parking lot is small and few spaces are available. Upon arriving we stood alone next to the front desk for a few minutes until a clerk appeared from a back room and advised us to "order here." We were handed a well-worn paper menu with a number of notations of raised prices. The dishes were the standard Chinese fare and we managed to find the lunch menu on the other side. It was unimpressive. Each dish was noted to be served with white or fried rice. We ordered Chicken and Beef Lo Mein, served in a plastic "to go" dish with a plastic cover. As it worked out we needed the dish to take home what we didn't eat. The servings were described as "for one" so we took the clerk at her word. Each serving was about a pound. The lo mein was ordinary spaghetti with pieces of not- so- great meat and a bunch of omion and some thin sliced carrots. The "sauce" was the blandest stuff ever- maybe it was just the water the pasta was boiled in. Ffor the three of us we used six soy sauce packets, just to get a little salty taste into it. Some pepper would have been nice, or sesame oil or oyster sauce or SOMETHING. The veggies were limp and very overdone. I can't imagine what the lo mein would have been like if we had bought it to go. Dont think I'll be back, Dont worry though- there's a Subway Sub and several other restaurants nearby, If you're a starving UVa student, this place is to expensive for you. read more

The plus was that the food came out on time, the worker was nice and the order was correct, but other than that I probably wouldn't get food from here again. I got the general tsos chicken lunch with white rice an egg roll and a bottle of water. The general tsos was swimming in sauce and the chicken tasted kind of old and over fried, it was a little too crunchy. The egg roll was almost empty and had very little filling. Ordering from this place was a huge regret. I'm disappointed in myself for putting faith in the five-star reviews. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because the order was accurate and the sesame chicken & egg rolls were decent. I tried Yuan Ho because it's inexpensive and offers a few things on the menu that aren't typically found at Chinese carryout joints. I also appreciate that they deliver directly instead of just through third-party apps. The pu pu platter sounded promising and was reasonable priced. Half of it was inedible. Literally the worst crab rangoons I've ever had - just fried dough filled with sour, runny cream cheese. No sweet flavor ... No flavor really, other than sour. The ribs were way chewier than I've had from any other place and totally lacking in flavor. The beef on a stick had a little flavor and was ooookay, but I wouldn't go so far as to say good. The fried shrimp looked so unappealing that I didn't even try one. My s.o. ate one and wasn't impressed. Like I mentioned earlier, egg rolls were okay. Super greasy and not packed with flavor, but probably the best part of the meal (thank goodness for hot mustard). Entrees & Soup: I almost always order vegetable bean curd soup if it's on the menu, so I was excited about trying this one. BLEH! It had a weird odor and literally tasted like sour, hot water with some sad looking veggies tossed in. No mushrooms, which in every other soup of this kind is what lends flavor and thickness. I tried loading it with Sriracha but still couldn't get past the weird, funky smell. The spicy chicken entree I ordered had great texture, but once again was completely lacking in flavor. There was no spiciness and even the onions and celery offered no flavor to the dish. It was like eating air. BF's entree was sesame chicken and shrimp w/veggies. Shrimp was no bueno, but the sesame chicken was the highlight of the entire meal. I don't even love sesame chicken, but since it was practically the only thing edible, I was all over it. I ordered the Dinner Combo with Sesame Chicken and Fried Rice. Everything was bad for Chinese take-out in my opinion. The chicken and the rice came in the smaller Chinese take-out containers that are half of the size of the standard ones. The chicken container had very little meat, and half of the container consisted of old broccoli. The fried rice was dry, overcooked, and had little to no egg in it. The dinner combo comes with one egg roll that is bad and not worth ordering the dinner combo for. Skip this place and grab dinner at the other restaurants nearby. Although the Chinese food in Charlottesville isn't amazing, if you're really craving some "dirty" Chinese take-out, you're better off making the drive anywhere else. read more

This is my go to chinese take out place. I usually order off the asian menu unless I'm eating vegetarian. The chicken and scallion is my favorite. It tastes the healthiest because it isn't drenched in sauce. But their soy sauce goes perfectly with the chicken and rice. I also like the asian style spicy chicken which comes with tofu. It's a bit oily but I love the flavors. This time I got the mapo tofu which isn't what I'm used to but it is still flavorful and comes with a good amount of mushrooms. Their lunch specials are so cheap and I usually order hot and sour soup or miso tofu soup since I order off grubhub. I would not recommend the steamed veggie dumplings, lo mein or fried rice. This place is great. I've literally never had a restaurant deliver Gen. Tso's that is crispy, but they do. Try all the things but the Taiwanese Beef Shank Noodle Soup is as is the Shredded Pork with Mustard Tube (frfr). The Chow Ho Fen are fat noodles you'll love. Fragrant Eggplant takes a positive spin on its name and is good for vegetarians. read more

For a Chinese carry out, this place is pretty good. They have an Asian menu, a vegetarian menu, and then the more common entrees. Their Asian menu is really good with options like shrimp and scrambled egg or spareribs. Their vegetarian menu is filled with tofu, eggplant, veggie, and mushroom options. The portion sizes are nice. You can of course get delivery or take-out. Delivery normally is 30 min or under. You can also dine in. There are some nights that this place can get pretty busy, but customer service is always good and delivery is normally under the time they quote you. read more

This place seemed so promising but turned out to be pretty terrible. There was not one but two long dark hairs in my kung pao chicken, which was bland and hardly recognizable. The general tsao's was much better although it didn't have any hair. The cheese wontons were chewy and hard to eat. Over all this may be the worst Chinese food I've had in a long time. This is great stuff when you are a college kid far away from home! The delivery can sometimes be slow, since it's of course aimed at the college students, and at peak times, they try their best to accomidate. The lunch special.. well, the prices are great. However, their rice sometimes has a funny not-so-natural "yellow/orange" color to it. It really doesn't affect the taste, but it's just odd! I don't care what anyone says but Yuan Ho is pretty much one of my favorite things ever. It's hot, greasy Chinese food and I always get hung up on really abruptly, but that kind of thing grows on you (kind of). The lunch/dinner specials are a good deal, I like asking for either hot and sour soup or egg drop soup instead of an egg roll. My absolute favorite entree here is the sesame chicken, but that also probably contributed a lot to some extra padding around my face. If you're going to eat Yuan Ho you might as well get what you actually want, right? I'd stay away from most of the dishes with shrimp, probably because they won't give very many and also kind of for safety. read more

I was really craving chinese one night, so a friend and I decided to order from this place. I heard that the eggplant tofu dish was amazing and I LOVE EGGPLANT & TOFU so I was really excited to try it out. They told us it would take about 20 mins to deliver which was fair considering I live not too far from JPA. 30 mins later, the food hasn't arrived. So we waited and finally the food got to us about 45 mins after we ordered. Because we figured that they were probably busy on a Saturday night, we did not fuss to much about it. Now the food, we ordered a couple things.. - Hot & Sour Soup: MEH at best. There were some gelatinous blobs in our soup which is not very appetizing. - Beef Chow Ho Fen: Had absolutely no flavor. It was plain noodles with seasoned beef, the noodles were clumped together and dried out. - Egg Roll: It was average, typical egg rolls you get from a chinese take out place. - Eggplant and Tofu: What was everyone raving about? It was so blend that I had to add my own seasoning to it. Only good thing about the food? It was hot and at least edible. So overall I have to say I was disappointed with the food and delivery. Best crag rangoon you'll ever eat. It's baked, not fried (like that really matters when you're chowing down on greasy Chinese). Otherwise, Yuan Ho is as good a Chinese takeout place as you'll find in these parts, I'm afraid. Decent fried rice. I prefer the spicy eggplant and tofu. For an authentic Chinese food deprived college student, Yuan Ho definitely satisfies my cravings. I've tried: the Hong Kong Beef, Beef Chow Mi Fun (Rice Vermicelli noodles), Veggie Stir-fry Udon, Hot & Sour soup, & Veggie soup. THe beef is always tender and perfectly cooked. Although sometimes the dishes can be on the salty side and a little drowned in sauce, it's not a huge problem. I've also heard that one of the Eggplant dishes is really good. All of the dishes come in fairly large portions, even the lunch & dinner specials. There's bound to be leftovers, especially since lunch & dinner combos come with an egg roll or soup and a soda! Although some of the dishes are on the pricey side, it's definitely worth the 30-45 minute delivery time & the money. I would suggest finding a few friends to split the order with or order 2 dishes for lunch & save some for the next meal! read more

It's not too remarkable but fed my Chinese food cravings at student-friendly pricing and at warp speed (we lived a 2-minute drive from the place). The food here is pretty good and authentic. The cold noodle is the best I've had in Charlottesville, other dishes (especially those stir fry dishes in Asian menu) are pretty good. An exception is the Double Cooked Pork, they use Cha Siew instead of normal pork slices, which gave the dish a really weird taste, and I found barely any bean paste in it. Pretty much the only choice in cheap Chinese food on JPA. I only eat here because it's close by and within walking distance. Surprisingly enough, I would say it's marginally better than other Chinese food places purely because of their prices. Standard chinese food menu, nothing really too unique or out of the ordinary. The lunch and dinner specials include some dishes that can come with an egg roll and a drink for cheap. Yuan Ho is kind of like the community pool, everyone's swimming in it, but nobody wants to be. This place is the best for inexpensive Chinese food in Charlottesville by far. I have had shrimp lo mein and gingko's, ming dynasty, and taiwan garden and it wasn't as good as the shrimp lo mein I got at yuan ho. Noodles were super good and not too oily or dry like I've had other places, and it was flavorful with a ton of shrimp. Delivery was super fast too, about 30 minute wait time even though today is easter and they might have been more busy than usual. I'm staying at UVA hospital with my partner and I am so picky about how I like my Chinese food. I might like about one out of ten. Most places use chicken that's all fat and gristle. They use perfect chicken and my Kung Pao Chicken tasted like it was supposed to, even better than home. Fast and friendly and spot on. I will be going back to try some other menu items. I was trying place a delivery order and WOW the person on the phone couldn't even speak english!!!! How am I supposed to order food if they can't even understand what I am saying. I'm not tyring to be racist, but come on! Get someone that can speak English and understand English to take the order!!! I repeated my phone number and my address 10 times and she still coudn't get it!! I even spelled it out and she still couldn't get it!!!! Please put someone on the phone that speaks English! I was very pleasantly surprised by this food! I ordered delivery through Order Up and this was my fastest delivery yet. I got the shrimp lo mein but chose the option of getting it with udon noodle instead of the normal lo mein noodle and I loved it! It was not overly msg-filled and nasty feeling for my body. The veggies and shrimp were good too. Also a great portion! I wish I had known about this Chinese takeout option sooner!
