Came across this place by chance during one of the hiking trips from Richmond to the Shenandoah National Park. Surprised to find authentic Taiwanese food here. It has many of the typical Taiwanese eats which I want to try them all!

    tomato and egg drop soup

we ordered the shrimp wonton noodle soup, egg drop and tomato soup, and the taiwanese popcorn chicken. the prices are very worth the portion sizes. the wonton noodle soup waaas a little bland but the shrimp wontons made up for the flavor. they had seasoning on the side and if you ask for hot chili oil, they will offer some! these were the best wontons i've had because each of them had one single shrimp instead of it being minced. very generous with the amount they gave us too! the tomato and egg drop soup was very good. the acidity from the tomato and mild flavor from the egg andddd the tofu was a great mix. huge portion too... so don't be offended if the lady at the register questions to only pick one, she is probably just worried about food waste (i insisted both soups because i was sick). the popcorn chicken was our favorite since it was a huge portion for the price and came with cuttlefish balls!! SO GOOD. it also came with a side of rice. the restaurant itself is pretty small but it wasn't too busy when we visited. the atmosphere felt very authentic and i believe if you can read in mandarin, they have a secret menu on the wall!! 10/10 would come back every visit :')!!

Authentic Taiwanese food! The portions are very good too. We will definitely visit again!

    Crispy tofu bento box

The vegetarian menu section is mostly vegan. I got a crispy tofu bento box with rice, eggplant, and veggies. Big portion size. Crispy tofu is very salty which was perfect to me, but beware. Next time I really want to try the general Tsos tofu. Ample parking and very cute outdoor seating. Service was so fast and friendly enough. They seem to do mostly takeout but it's cute and clean inside anyway. I'll be back!

Absolutely loved this restaurant. Not a whole lot of seating indoors, but there is also outdoor tented seating. I loved how this restaurant was fairly minimalistic compared to restaurants in general! There is a lack of staffing in this restaurant, which I presume is why they utilize a cooler in the front for customers to pour out the water themselves and paper rice bowls/styrofoam cups. Food was absolutely spectacular. Popcorn chicken was so ridiculously juicy and SOFT. Just enough crispness on the outside, and once you begin chewing, it melts in your mouth. Chili Garlic Eggplant was also the softest cooked eggplant I have ever set my palate on. It pulls apart easily, and it's extremely savory. I enjoyed mixing it with my rice. The General Tso Tofu had a layer of crispiness that was clearly distinct from its interior contents. Tofu was soft, broccoli was firm and added a nice "lighter/clean" aspect to the dish. TIP: - The portions ARE FANTASTIC. I would've gotten full from the popcorn chicken alone. 100% worth your buck. -Try wrapping the popcorn chicken with the greens that come with it :) -The eggplant dish is HOT, do be careful

One of my favorite restaurants in Cville! This place has a mix of typical Chinese dishes and more authentic (to a wasian like me at least) Taiwanese dishes. Every visit here has been satisfying, with very reasonable prices (~$10-11 for an entree) and large enough servings for me to always have leftovers. Service is pretty speedy and they normally have hot barley tea available for free while you wait or dine in. My go-tos are the Amazing Chicken bento (grilled) and the Wonderful Chicken bento (crispy) -- both come with rice, delicious eggplant, and cabbage. You can't go wrong with these, but I'd also highly recommend: - Taiwanese popcorn chicken - scallion pancakes - Taiwanese stir fry rice cake

Cafe 88 is always reliable with tasty dishes! I come here item when my parents are in town and it's always a delight. The only thing is that there isn't much seating. You order and pay at the counter and there is barely tea that you get in a dispenser at the front. Our go to are the pea shoots for some veggies, the Taiwanese popcorn chicken, and the beef noodle soup. The pea shoots aren't always available so we have to ask every time. I find that I'm always craving popcorn chicken and the place delivers. I ordered the combo for the first time and although I enjoyed the squid balls, the tofu were lacking in flavor All I wouldn't get it again and just stick to the normal. I also love the beef noodle soup for a warm bowl of comfort. It's a good portion and is delicious. I've also gotten the box before and remember liking the eggplant. Haven't eaten anything I didn't like yet. A very reliable place and would highly recommend!

Came with my parents and a few friends and had an amazing time! The shop was empty when we came in, and we noticed all the tables were for 4 people or less. Thankfully, the owner saw us and helped us push 2 tables together immediately so we could sit down! My friends and I ordered the beef noodle soup, and we also ate a rice cake dish, scallion pancakes, and squid with chives. I loved the scallion pancakes - although not much, they were light and delicious! The beef noodle soup was delightful (although a tad bit spicy) and I was pleased with the amount of beef and bokchoy included. The noodles were also perfectly cooked and extremely flavorful! The portion size was great and I definitely loved the food. Would come back for the beef noodle soup anytime!

Very very nice lady (owner) and very helpful with the menu. - I had the chicken Pho ($16.50). I added the 2 included Hoisin sauce packets. It also came with a Sriracha sauce packet and a small container of chili oil along with the normal variety of noodles, sprouts, fresh herbs, green onions, white onions, jalapeño slices, and a lime wedge. The chicken was tender sliced white meat with no fat, gristle, or bones attached. The broth had a lot of flavor and was delicious. - I also had the shrimp and chive dumplings ($7.00). Not a strong shrimp flavor, but they had a nice crisp on the outside and were tasty. The sauce that comes with the dumplings is absolutely delicious. - My wife had the Bulgogi beef ($14.50). She said it was tender and very delicious. It came with rice, kimchi, and cucumber salad. I just happened to speak to Linh about the cucumber salad and she said this is how she's always made it for her kids and they love it. Well, I'm with her kids and love it too. She makes the vinaigrette herself and it has an unexpected sweetness to it instead of the usual strong vinegar flavor. We both loved it. - We had the pork gyoza ($7.00). This was cooked my favorite way, deep fried (not pan fried). This took me back to the gyoza in Japan and the Yaki Mandu I used to get in Korea. Great crispy wrapper with a tender flavorful filling. And again, the sauce that came with it is some of the best I've had. - The kimchi is not overly spicy and has a slight sweetness to it. - The Egg Tarts ($5.50) are good, not overly sweet. Could use a bit more filling for a better filling to pie crust ratio. - I also got a Chai tea bubble milk ($6.25) that was super delicious. Overall, we really enjoyed Nguyen's Kitchen and will go back with friends. It's unfortunate that it sits behind a Taco Bell and is not highly noticeable from the road, otherwise I might have tried it sooner.

The wonton soup tasted extremely salty and looked dark as if someone put soy sauce in it. This is the first time in my entire life where I tasted bad wonton soup. The won ton itself was great. It was just the salty broth. I make this at home, and it is not that difficult to make. It is supposed to be a simple broth (partly the reason why I ordered it because I wanted something simple). I told them about the saltiness. They tried to make it right by bringing out another soup with a better broth. The pho was just okay but was not as fragrant as expected. I am Vietnamese and make this at home as well. Otherwise, it had everything it was supposed to have. The fried rice was a large portion and tasted better than the other two dishes. Overall, it was a good experience. The service was good. We got seated quickly. The ambiance and decor was vibrant. The bathrooms were clean. I will try other dishes later and update this review.

I've tried everything else and knew Q Noodles is well reviewed but HK is undefeated. We ordered takeout and decided to try a few different things on their menu. I will say the food came correct and the packaging was clean and tidy. The prices are expensive but the portions are huge. We ordered 2 apps and 2 entrees and couldn't finish all of it. 1 of each is enough for 2 people. The pork steamed buns were our favorite. Not the best I've had ever, but possibly the best in cville. The bun was super light and fluffy and the filling was savory. I prefer mine to be a bit sweeter with a BBQ flavor, so not my all time fav but very good. 8/10 The egg rolls were just fine. Well prepared and cooked. Tasted slightly too oily. The inside was cabbage and either ground pork or chicken. No carrot. The inside was so finely minced it kinda turned into a mush. So the texture was not the best. Hard to distinguish the flavor as well. 5/10 The sesame paste noodles with ground pork was presented beautifully with red cabbage, cucumber, edamame, corn, shredded carrot and cilantro. I think the sesame paste sauce was just too one dimensional, but maybe that's the point. The noodles were overdone so underneath the beautiful rainbow of toppings was just kind of a pile of mushy noodles in a plain sesame paste. After a few bites the earthiness/mushiness of the dish starts to be overwhelming ... not my favorite. 4/10 The general tsos was packaged well and came with white rice a few pieces of steamed brocolli and a ramen egg. The ramen egg was good. The general tsos the chicken was good quality and very fresh. It reminded me of an orange chicken in terms of how their GT tastes. My favorite GT in cville is from Hong Kong and unfortunately this one wasn't as good. The chicken was good quality but the texture was quite soft and not crispy the way I prefer. The sauce was also a bit too sweet for my preference. Overall, a good dish it is enjoyable just not my fav. 6/10 With how much hype they get I was expecting a bit more - perhaps at some point I will try their soup dumplings since they may be the only place in cville that does them. But for $13 for 6 pieces I may just continue to wait awhile considering the rest of their food was fairly average. Overall, a solid spot for average Chinese food. Nothing amazing but will satisfy a craving for well made Chinese food if you are looking in the uva area.
