Barking Dog Restaurant - beef shin burger is definitely not your average burger

I've had my fair share of memorable burgers from coast to coast in America, but just glancing at a picture of the beef shin burger transports me back across the pond to the Barking Dog. I remember the few days I spent in Belfast fondly and of the many memories, my meal at the Barking Dog was a definite highlight. In a rather quaint and charming neighborhood, I took a nice short stroll from my Airbnb and came across this gem of an establishment and decided I had to check it out. I had a nice beer to start, and it wasn't a Guinness because stouts aren't my thing, but whatever it was I remember it being excellent and local. Undoubtedly you could make this place a regular haunt and there is no shortage of drinks and food options to make this a go-to for a date, celebration, or a quick meal. The staff are welcoming, kind, and helpful and the general atmosphere is chill. The food for me was ethereal - a burger isn't just a burger here and what you get when you bite into the beef shin burger is a little slice of Heaven. Moist and tender are a given but the taste is just so divine with the caramelized onion, cheddar, and horseradish mayo melding into an union of perfection. It's hard not to describe one of the most memorable meals of my life in such hyperbole but the vivid recall I have of this particular place is uncanny and merits all the praise I can heap upon the fine folks that run the place. If timing had worked out, I would have eaten as meals here as I could have but I'll thank my lucky stars for at least giving me one opportunity to eat such a wonderful burger at such a wonderful eatery. A+ and a definite must when visiting Belfast.

My wife and I passed The Pheasant every day as we travelled home from the festival. Today I got my chance to pop in...was I in for a treat. The interior decor is definitely period and works really well....check it out!!It has a great location and there is ample car parking. Absolutely superbly decked out inside and staff excellent. I went for the calamari and Caesar salad. When it arrived it was huge and delicious-the Caesar must have been the best (tastiest and creamiest) I've ever had. Calamari cooked to perfection and in a lightly spiced batter (I was expecting more). As a starter it was excellent value and big portion well presented. Will be back for more!!!!

I was lucky enough to have them cater my wedding and the food was outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble for them. We had a beautiful chicken dish with a sweet potato side, and soup also to start, and a trio of mini-desserts to finish. My husband and I were allowed our own meals, I had sushi followed by duck, and he had steak and chips (he is a straighforward kind of guy!) We had an evening with the two sets of in-laws one night when we got to sample a selection of meals in order to choose our wedding menu. I've never felt so spoiled in all my life. The atmosphere was very special, and we were treated like royalty - the chef came out for a chat with us afterwards which was very thoughtful. Food just kept coming, delicious and beautifully presented, which wasn't a suprise considering the chef had recently left a job in the Ivy to come and work here. For our evening buffet they served us gourmet hot dogs and burgers from an open barbeque outside, with carmelised onions and relish - people went back several times! There was a vegetarian that we forgot was coming to the evening do, and they sent down to the restaurant to get her a selection of cheeses and bread - and they never even billed us for it. Angela who looked after us throughout our wedding was cool, calm and collected and made everything run like clockwork. I would highly recommend The Pheasant if you are looking for caterers for an event, and even for a special night out, the restaurant itself is perfect.

Since we had already had lunch we sat at the bar for a beer. We were greeted by a nice bartender. We told her we were looking for either a beer or cider. There are a few tables outside to enjoy the weather and a few tables inside. The bar area downstairs is small with quite a sizable collection of bras hanging from the ceiling. We ordered a Hilden Belfast Blonde and a Small Axe Session IPA. It wasn't super busy so talked to the bartender about travel. As another bartender walked in we also discussed beer and cocktails. He told us that flavored Gins were popular. He let us smell a few of the popular ones since we are not big gin drinkers. Decided to stop in the ladies room before leaving and found an interesting group of old photos while there. We didn't try any food but loved the beer and cocktail options and really enjoyed talking to both the bartenders. Stop by and check it out.

UPDATE TO REVIEW The caterer for Malone House changed in…read moreOctober 2016. I was at the venue recently (2017) and was appalled. The food was, to me, canteen food, and mediocre canteen food at that. I am convinced that the chips were frozen chips of the cheapest variety. And if you had have seen the scampi - half of the scampi had a light-coloured coating/batter, and the other half was very dark! It was so unusual to look at. It looked like half of the scampi had been fried more than once. What was even more disturbing is that this was the case on two separate plates of scampi! I got the impression that a surplus portion of scampi was lying around and, so as not to waste it, it was fried again later. But to mix such a dark-coloured scampi with light-coloured scampi was a bizarre idea. If you think that going to a grand house and estate means you'll be having a grand meal, you will be tragically disappointed. And why, you may wonder, did this canteen-food company end up with a contract that another company had had for 27 years? Upon investigation, it seems that Belfast City Council's tender for the catering required that applicants for the contract had to have a turnover of £5 million. Never mind the quality of food you're serving, or gathering customer feedback/reviews for the applicants - if your turnover isn't £5 million, you're out. I doubt very much that Belfast City Council cares about any of this: they presumably have the attitude that someone will always want the contracts, so who cares about the quality (or distinct lack thereof) of food being dished out? As far as I can tell, the catering company who 'won' the contract, Amadeus, are also supplying the catering at a restaurant in Belfast Castle, and a café at Lady Dixon Park: two places I will also now be avoiding, lest I end up with multi-coloured scampi and a plate of chips from Iceland (the retailer, that is). INITIAL REVIEW Malone House is set in the beautiful grounds of Barnett's Demesne. Frustratingly, Malone House doesn't serve food after 5p.m., which is of no use to the working population. I was there recently for an event one evening and, while the grounds are well maintained and the house has been lovingly restored and modernised, I found it to be a bit of an annoying venue. The buffet that was served was OK - it's hard to go wrong with sandwiches and cocktail sausages - but the room that the event was in didn't have a bar. You have to come out of that room and go across the hall to the next room, which I thought was a bit odd. It's not like you have to go across the road or anything, it was just a bit of an inconvenience. The room with the bar is quite small, and felt a bit cramped, with the bar awkwardly tucked away in the corner. It had a decent selection of bottled drinks but only had Heineken and Guinness on draught, which is a woefully inadequate selection. I know it's not a pub, but if you're going to host events/parties in the evening, an effort should be made to provide a decent selection of draught beers. Heineken must be one of the least popular draught beers that's available in Belfast, although it doesn't taste as bad as Tennent's (see my Whitefort review). I've heard it said that many services that are run by a local council will operate inefficiently, and it's difficult to argue with that line of thinking when a venue doesn't serve diners after 5p.m., only offers two types of draught beer, and requires you to go from one room to another to get it. Nonetheless, I look forward to the day that I have the free time to sample the food there, but it's not a venue I'd advise anyone to use to host an event, unless it's a teetotal walking society of some description.
