YWCA Central Alabama is a nonprofit social justice organization dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Founded in 1903, the YW works at the intersection of race and gender. Our programs and services address systemic disparities and respond to the needs of women and their families. We provide community housing, domestic violence services and have a nationally accredited child development program. Shop at My Sister's Closet. History

Established in 1903.

In 1903, a courageous and enterprising woman inspired others to raise a few hundred dollars to empower women. That small act blossomed into an organization unashamed to be a fearless voice for women and marginalized communities. Through the years, YWCA assisted young women in their search for employment (1900s), elevated teen service (1930s) and created opportunities during times of turbulent race relations for Black and white women to plan and develop programs together (1960s). More than a century later, the legacy of founder Maybelle Sloss continues through life-changing programs, services and advocacy initiatives. Today, social justice is foundational to the work we do at YWCA Central Alabama. Built upon that foundation of social justice are three pillars representing our focus areas: (1.) community housing, (2.) child development and (3.) domestic violence services. Economic empowerment programs stretch across these pillars and supportive services wrap around them.
