today's yoga session turned into a series of unfortunate events. i'm at the front door, all set to zen out, and bam! i suddenly realize i had forgotten my yoga mat (again). i was tempted to turn around and go home, but i had already committed online and my spot was reserved. instead, i paid for a rental mat and headed to the earth studio, to stake out my 'territory', only to find that someone else had beaten me to it. three minutes to class starting and someone with a lack of spatial awareness and/or blatant disregard for yoga etiquette decides to take up two spots, "yup, right in front of this person looks good." this was not a full class, in fact, it was about less than half (i checked earlier). meanwhile, the person behind me was sick, coughing, and wiping her nose in between our warrior pose. i thought i detected a faint smell of mold from the rental mat while in child's pose. attempting to meditate, breathing through my nose, and out through my mouth, i hear some loud banging noises, there's some maintenance work being done as we were in cobra pose. with all that was going on, i found it challenging to concentrate, my balance was off, the class was hard to follow, and the person i usually rely on for reference was not in front of me. no yoga model, lack of personal space, and someone coughing, all contributed to a not so enjoyable class. i wish the instructor would have mentioned the placement of mats to this particular individual.

This is a super convenient location for anyone working downtown or in the West End/Coal Harbour. The gym is going for a spa vibe. Staff at reception are friendly. They ask for ID for newbies, not sure why, but it wasn't a big deal that I didn't have mine. I did not sign a waiver? But did give emergency contact info. Note that staff will not physically show you all the facilities as there is a no shoe policy fairly soon after the reception and they won't go past that area. Soon after reception, there is a shoe room. The area is quite large so it's not an issue when the gym is busy. Going down the hall you will find the hydration station, a bank of small lockers and the sauna. The sauna is a nice extra, though it is small and not super hot. The change room is huge. There's quite a few areas with sinks and more, larger lockers. All lockers have keys provided at no charge. There's around 8 shower stalls with shampoo and conditioner provided. Would like to know what brand these toiletries are and ingredients. Also, the showers need more hooks as people were just putting their clean clothes on the wet floor because there's only one hook for a towel at each stall. Water pressure was good. The change room has another two whole areas for changing with bench and hooks. There's also toilets and some hair dryers. There are some areas where the walls need a touch up as they are visibly damaged. The studio I was in was the heated studio. I don't think the heat is infrared so it gets super hot and everyone was dripping during yoga. For sure you need a yoga towel on top of your mat. They provide blocks and there were also weights near the sauna area but no bands or anything else. The blocks are wooden so they are hard. There is some purely sanitizing spray for equipment at the end. Not sure I'm into using something so chemically on my mat as most other studios use tea tree. Also, they do not provide any sort of towels: no face towels for sweating, no bath towels for the showers and no towels for wiping down equipment. This is a huge oversight at this price point as most gyms, even those that are boutique or much smaller provide all these things free of charge. Here, you have to pay a rental fee. The instructor was super nice and gave lots of modifications. She also walked the room to check on people and knew the names of regulars. It was a bit strange though that she was at the back of the class instead of at the front. Also, she mostly gave verbal instructions and only sometimes demonstrated the poses. The tea room is a nice extra though it wasn't heavily used. It is a nice place to hang out. The tea was a cacao cardamom and it was actually very good. It was from tea sparrow, which is a boutique indeoendent business. Finally, there is a retail area with Lululemon clothing, mats, essential oils etc. They carry some rocky mountain soap company items, which I'd good because it supports a Canadian small business.

A relaxing exhale! An energizing inhale. Yes, yoga is on my mind. After a (errr, 4 year) hiatus from downward dogs, trees and warriors, I bravely attended a Flow Yoga class this week. And, what do you know, I survived and even surprised myself for lasting the 1.5 hours of stretch, breath, stretch, om. It's a fantastic location - central (for me at least) and modern, with a lot of different class types and times. All the way to late night! The "wellness" treatments look scrumptious - Indian Head Massages, Cranialsacral Therapy, Energy Healing. (I have little to no idea what these mean, but they sound like they'd be good for the soul too!) If you're getting any sort of pass, make sure you give yourself at least 15 min before a class starts so that the picture they take of you doesn't look like you've just woken up! Be prepared to shun your shoes in a big cubby area and then go barefoot or socked with the rest of the yogis. There's lots of lockers (although, I'm not sure how you get one with a coded lock) and the change room facilities are really clean! There's a sauna there too and a cool looking Spin + Yoga class that means I have no excuse for going without cardio! The Wi-Fi in the cafe could also make this a stopping point when needing to access yelpy things on the fly! Gotta jet, I'm off for my second class this week!

I already have convinced numerous friends to join because I am so impressed by everything this studio has to offer So far I have been to about 25 classes at the sea centre and kits beach location. Every class I have been to, is different- I have been to mostly Hatha classes and every session, even with the same teacher is totally unique! This is fabulous because it keeps my body guessing, works new muscle groups, and allows me to always be challenged. I have been a member at other more corporate yoga studios in vancouver before and I find their classes are all the same of each type of yoga. Sea Centre is by far the most gorgeous location- 180 degree views of the harbour in Granville island. So relaxing and rejuvenating- I always leave feeling like I just went on vacation. It's addictive. The studios themselves are non pretentious- I have found visiting other more corporate yoga companies in vancouver (not naming names!) that they can be TOO corporate.. Not very authentic or welcoming. I am happy to say I am now a semperviva client for life! Great job guys :)

The staff was friendly. They seemed to be a little lax on people not arriving the ten minutes early as people were filing in up to the start of the class. I have been a member of Oxygen in other cities so I am comparing my experience at this location to Victoria and Kelowna. The good first: the instructor was clear and had a plan for the class. She adjusted on the fly to the time remaining. She also made sure to only have exercises that worked with the room and equipment. All equipment is included at the studio except for yoga mats: weights, bands, knee pads, disinfectant spray, face towels. Staff was nice. There are showers. Not sure if there are amenities in the showers but I did see some spray deodorants. Sound system worked well. Studio is mirrored to check your form and view the instructor. There are lockers and hooks in the change room for storage. Members seem to know each other and chat. Location is good. The bad: studio is super tiny. The studio is therefore incredibly crowded and there is no way you would be able to do a lot of the moves that other Oxygen locations do in the HIT class and other cardio classes. There is a pillar in the middle of the studio obstructing view of the instructor. Likewise, I think it's difficult for the instructor to view everyone, which means it's hard for them to see incorrect forms. Perhaps due the studio being tiny and everyone being crammed together, you can smell more odors than at other locations. I guess there was ok air conditioning because the room was not very hot? during the class. The layout to the equipment room is weird and there isn't good traffic flow. There are no cubbies to store belongings in the studio room. The entryway/lobby is also very small so you really are forced to wait outside, potentially in the cold and rain. The change room is small and a bit weird with plastic doors for the toilets and showers. I appreciate they are trying to maximize the space, but the quality of the finishes is very cheap. Beyond this, the studio floor was extremely hard, so much so that I realized when I went home that I had visible scrapes and road rash on my elbows from doing commandos. I see now why they have kneepads available, but I'm not sure why they wouldn't just redo the floor or put a layer of padding on it. It was very strange. Overall, although I love Oxygen, I would probably want to shop around and try the west end location as well as other general fitness studios before committing to a membership here.
